My dad passed away on 12/18/2022, he loved this song. We had it playing along with the slide show of all his pictures. He had an old 63 white chevy similar to the video. That's why he like the song. Rip dad. Love you.
Ditto. This song holds a lot of meaning for me, bringing back memories of carefree times-high school days, surrounded by my friends. Definitely appreciate your comment. 😊
Isn’t that how life usually works … people drift in and out of your life from the past … reminiscing for a few fleeting moments in time … then those folks drift away again. Sometimes they return … sometimes … you keep the memories alive in your heart … your mind. One day you catch a song on the radio … much like Desert Moon. The cobwebs are swept away … and you are again with those folks from years past. For a few moments …. Time reverses and all those emotions come back.
Could not have said it better. Had some great friends back in the 80’s, a couple have passed, some I lost contact with, but 2 still remain great friends. Don’t catch up often but when we do it’s like time stood still. I always wonder what happened to those lost friends, hope they are doing well.
This is the only song I was able to learn to play on my Casio keyboard. The 80's was the greatest decade of my lifetime as I am now in my 60's and no other decade came close to the great times I had back then.
Well said. Always takes me back to the 80s while in my teens. No cell phones. Had to call a girl on the phone to communicate with her. Dont get me wrong. Im now with a wife and kids and wouldnt change it for the world. But, what I wouldnt give to go back to the late 1980s one more time.
I miss my little brother he passed away last year. He said that when I went in to the navy. He would play my old Lp in my old room and think about me. I sure miss him and I think about him all the time.

This song came out when I was a teen. Just a kid. Now I'm 51 and I can say this song and video, in an extremely simplistic way, summarizes life. You'll never forget that first love. Going home and visiting the old spots is sweet and sad at the same time. You realize everything that used to be is no longer. Good buddies are still good buddies though. That never changes. The same jokes and stories will always be told and shared decade after decade as long as there's time to get together and talk.
Yes your right, I am already 51 but for me it seems like it's only yesterday, I always remember old friends sharing dreams together, this kind of songs made us realized that time passed by and we can never turn back it's only the memories
Oh so true chris. Those were the days of my first love as well. And as an old guy now, I agree with you ever so much. After your first love, you don't ever quite love a woman like that again. Oh to be back in those wonderful carefree days of the 80's.
I heard this song in Home Depot yesterday. I literally froze and just listened to this memory of my youth. My mind flashed back to my first girlfriend and how she and I would just drive around aimlessly for hours without a single care in the world. What I wouldn’t give to be young again riding around with her in my 1983 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 convertible once again. I miss her. I miss that car. I miss my youth!!!!
It's the down side of loving music as much as we do 👍❤️ We associate so much of our lives to the songs throughout the years of lives But for all the tea in China I wouldn't change this personality trait , and I guess neither would you Love from Ireland 👍
I never would have admitted it as a 15 year old in 84, but I loved this song and video. When he gave that cherry ‘65 to his brother, even back then, the tears came. It’s crazy. I was 15, never had a girlfriend or been in love, but this song me made long for a time I had yet to experience. In the four decades since, love has come and gone many times. And every time, I find myself revisiting this song. THAT, friends, is the hallmark of good writing, a little cheesy for some, but some of those lyrics simply rip at the pieces of my heart. Thanks Dennis…
Oh the beautiful great 80’s - those were the best years of my life which I never would have imagined to be the case . I can relate to your story my friend .
Was it a girly song or something? I don't quite get why u wouldn't admit u liked it... surely we all grow up and we don't give a fuck what kind of songs we liked or not... what matters is what they meant to us, what they have meant to us through the years and decades... I was 10, so too young then to realize the true meaning and depth of the lyrics - it's a different story for me nowadays.
This song brings me back to a time when life was simpler. My heart aches for those times. When there was no twitter or Facebook or Zoom. The music was the soundtrack of our lives. It told a story. How I miss those days. If only we could go back...today seems so divided, harsh and empty...
I honestly think anyone who was a teen or young adult in the 80s would go back in a heartbeat and stay there --- we've seen nothing in this world since 2000 but bitterness and anger and people not wanting to hang out with each other anymore --- those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s remember the good times portrayed in this video --- when all you needed was some good friends and some backyard BBQ and football to put a smile on your face --- nobody gave a shit about looking at a stupid little screen filled with hateful messages!
My college roommate and I watched the world premiere of this video on MTV in 1984. After the opening scene, Jim turned to me and said: "I had no idea where they were going with that." After this video, anytime we'd say "where are you going" the answer was always: I don't know, maybe Chicago. Great song, great video, great memories.
@@jogjanesewalks8217 The music video for the song, directed by Jack Cole, was filmed at the train depot, and other historic buildings in, and around Santa Paula, California.
The 80s without a shadow of doubt the greatest ever decade musically wise especially up to mid 80s. The music, ,bands ,solo artists, ,the images, the contrast in music, the originality we will not see its like again. Anyone who grew up in this era know exactly what I'm talking about. Even TV Miami Vice etc Movies, Breakfast Club ,Ferris Bueller,Sixteen Candles, etc .Hard to put into words what a special time it was but those of us who were there know exactly how special it was.The furtherwe go awayfromthe 80s the more we realisee how lucky and privilegedwe were to have been there. We will not see its like again. .Thank goodness for RUclips for giving us the opportunity to revisit those times that make us happy and sad at the same time yearning for a truly fabulous era.
@@jaraza323 All those you named could not hold a candle to the music of the 60s..70s..80s...those people you named are not singers..but just show people..sorry.
I totally agree with you. To me, the great decades of music were the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. The quality of music went significantly downhill in the early 90s and got even worse in the 2000s.
No faxcebook, people spoke, met and fell in love....by you know talking. I always feel that Dennis's solo work is like Bread with better lyrics. The prog infu is still there as well.
I heard this song back in 1993 while having surgery. I enjoy the song reminds me of the Dad, some time ago . I'm listening 🎧❤to this song with the kids while taking them home 🏠 from school. God Almighty bless you'll stay strong and safe. Read your Bible
My mom loved this song, today she passed away because of the current situation, I can’t believe she is gone and I can’t accept it yet I know she won’t come back to hug me or my brother or my father, I hope this video remains more years so each nine of June I come back here and remember her more than ever
So sorry about your Mom. You can be sure that she will be watching you now. She will be saying: Do good in the world! Don't remember me now. Just do good in the world. Make a difference.
I am proud to say I lived the 80s and watched this video as I just arrived to study college in USA. Unforgettable 80s and music that made us who we’re. I feel sorry for any generation that didn’t live the 80s music.
@@davidwright4495 Oh so true! Some would say “Oh you were the same growing up in the 80’s” but no, such a different time.. would take the 80’s over today anytime..
I agree! I'm only 14 but I dont listen to the crap people listen to these days, I wish I was around back in the 70s and 80s which were indeed, the best of times
Me too, …I was in college when I first watched this video I wasn’t able to grasp the meaning behind the scenes and the lyrics….and years later when all the things changed and I watched it again and burst into tears and cry every time watching it ever since….
It is a wonderful song, isn't it? I first heard this when I was coming out of a very dark time of my life. This song made me realize that life had possibilities beyond the crap I had known.
Totally agree. This is my favorite video of all time. It’s beautifully put together, hits exactly the right spot. Dennis DeYoung once said the video may be better than the song. Maybe so. Regardless, that last verse, man … whew. 😢
I lost my little brother last year. When I went to the military he said that he played my Lp on my stereo in my old room, and would think of me I sure miss him.
When you think back to where you were when you first heard this song, you knew life would never be as good. Never let go of people, places and things that made you who you are, wherever your Desert Moon may be.
I know this reply is so trite. But oh so true. You don't know what you have until it's gone. I had just lost my first love the year before. This song runs deep into my soul and memory. The funny thing is even back then I knew the times were special, so unique, so precious. Yet I lived them as though they'd be here forever. Ah! The naiveties of youth. Yet I'm so privileged to have been in my prime at that time. And experienced the best of times.
I've been trying to remember/find this song for years, upon years, and two days ago I went into my King Soopers grocery store and what was playing on their music station...I stood there almost in tears hearing it, and seeing the video here just floods my mind with memories, from 35 yrs ago...seems like yesterday.. and even more poignant now...
You must be in Colorado. I was there earlier this month and a year and a half ago. Here in California. we have Super King grocery stores and Total Wine. There, it was Total Beverage and King Sooper!
Great memories with this song.... Summer 1984, newlywed and moved away from "home" starting a new life. Awakened EVERY morning at 4:45 to this song playing on WAV104 FM, Myrtle Beach SC....
This music video was filmed in Santa Paula, CA in Ventura County. The Train Depot is still there and looks pretty much like it did when this video was filmed 36 years ago.
Since you mentioned it, had to googled it.. having seen it, now i'm having more connection to the song & the music video.. good stuff.. thanks for the info..
Another 80's memory sparked by the magic of our music from that era. "When we were young .. We were dreamers" Love you Annette S ... You were so unattainable and yet so highly favored. Here's to our teenage years my love ✨
One of those lost treasures from the 80s. More specifically one, if not the greatest year for music... 1984. This song is so poignantly, achingly special. Makes my eyes fill up every time. Thanks Dennis for this song. I will cherish it always.
Summer of 1984...........I will remember this summer and this song until I leave this world. Love you Dennis, please keep doing videos, you are a hero of my youth, I now feel so old, when I see you do things online it makes me feel a little less old and a little more still relevant. Styx rocked, you still rock. I was 13 when this album was released. Dennis, most of your fans are younger than you. I am close to your age, we will not remain relevant forever, but I treasure all you work, both solo and the ones with Styx.
I heard this song the other day driving around my old hometown and I pulled into the lot of my old middle school and just closed my eyes and listened and thought of all the times I had at that school back in the 80s... What a life we had as children growing up in that decade...all the memories that ran through my mind as this song played...I remembered all the times we played ball on that field...all the school dances...all the trouble we got into...and I remembered kissing you Tanya for the first time...my first kiss at age 11...we thought we were so in love...It was all so innocent and we were kids and we didn't have a care in the world...I am sorry kids these days will not have any of that...we were so lucky
This video reminds me of the endless summers back when I was a kid in my teens. No pressures, no responsibilities. Just having fun with my friends. I'll never have those days back again.
I miss those days. It hurts so much. I miss my mom. The summer air. My friends the freedom. The sound of cicadas on a hot summer day with nothing to do. Peace y’all. Glad I was around in the 80s.
I remember back in Dec 1984 when my grandfather peacefully passed away and listening to this song. It became so sentimental to me whenever I hear this play and it brings back so many good memories during my younger years. Rest in Peace Lolo (Grand Dad).
Thank you for sharing that. For me, it was Foreigner's "I want to know what love is" that was playing on the FM stereo in my room after we got the phone call that Granddad had passed away (Feb. 1985).
it was very rare to see a song and video meld together but with this song and video they hit it out of the park. just another great song from the eighties
I'd be honored if some fans of classic 80s rock anthems would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of EYE OF THE TIGER by Survivor, WHO'S CRYING NOW by Journey, and IS THIS LOVE by Whitesnake on my YT channel in tribute to the era of legendary power ballads. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks & keep on rocking.
The 80's were the best. Everybody gets all nostalgic about their own favorite era, but think about it. Technology was pretty decent without being intrusive and overbearing. A person could still make mistakes in life and overcome them without being hounded by those mistakes for a lifetime, or being publicly crucified within seconds for making them. It wasn't perfect, but with all of the thought policing that goes on nowadays (say what you like, but it is 1000x times worse and more Orwellian than it was back then), relentlessness of technology, toxic cynicism, etc....I'd go back today if I could, in a heartbeat. A person could work hard, study, build a life and get ahead, improve their lot in life. Health care was pretty decent. Again, not going to get drawn into ridiculous and pointless debates about details that I think (yep, I'm less than perfect) are comparatively petty, or the obvious imperfections of the universe versus our own unrealistic expectations, etc. Smart phones and the internet are great, sure, but a person could still make his/her way in the world just fine back then....and live, and love. Paper maps, phone books, a little effort and dive into the mysteries of the open road (to mix a few metaphors lol). Sure, I'm happy now...but it is increasingly the case that I'm happy in spite of "things," not because of them. The world was indeed a better place back then. Rant and flame away....either you get what I'm saying, or you don't. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything. Peace, y'all...and '85 forever!
My eyes swell-up everytime I hear this song, because it represents a nice panoramic picture of the thoughts and feelings I have of the 1980s, and why I miss that decade so damn much. My life has never been as good as it was back in those--socially, economically, emotionally, etc..
I LOVE this song. And I love the part when he's asleep on the bed in his childhood room, with the picture of his high school girlfriend on the nightstand. Haven't we all had an experience like that? Really lovely...
To the person that reads this, I ask the Lord to bless them and their family, to cure them of every sickness and pain, to fill their emptiness with love joy and peace, to rebuke the enemy from their lives. " ASK JESUS TO COME INTO YOUR HEART AND SAVE YOU, AND TO FORGIVE YOU OF YOUR SINS, FOR WE GIVE THANKS AND GLORY TO THE LORD. IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST AMEN!
An amazing 1984 masterpiece written and performed by the legendary Dennis DeYoung (founding member from Styx). Dennis made all of the difference in the band Styx. Without him, or John Panazzo, the band isn’t Styx. Desert Moon was Dennis’ first solo effort, and what an effort it was! The original record is more desirable as time goes by.... What an accomplishment for him.... Ladies and Gentlemen.... Enjoy this amazing music video! 😊👍🏻
I love Tommy but he joined the band after they started . He changed Styx for the better. Dennis waned to go in a different direction and James and Tommy wanted to keep rockin. James drove Dennis away not Tommy.
I was so young when my father showed me this song, im currently 16 and I'm definitely going to show my future kids this song just like my dad with me. I love this song ! so much memories ❤
“I still can hear the whispers of a summer nights” is the lyric. But, yeah, I get it. It’s a great lyric. When someone tells me to go to my happy place, I close my eyes and think about driving around aimlessly in my white 1983 Audi Quattro with my first girlfriend, blaring songs like this on my Blaupunkt stereo with Alpine speakers. “Those were the best days of my life”, to quote Bryan Adams.
My little brother said that he would listen to the song in my old room on my old stereo when I went to the Navy and thing about me. Well he is gone now, I miss my little brother. I think about him all the time. He was everyones favorite.
At this time, Dennis wasn't just being a " reluctant " solo artist, but he actually had screen tested for a several movies but had to turn them down for one reason or another. You can see he's a natural, besides being an insanely talent musician. Great tune and brings back so many memories of the 80's.
The 80's were the ONLY decade that had music of all genres playing on the radio, each with their very own dedicated radio stations - pop, rock, metal, country, oldies, rap, dance, adult, love songs, classical, etc etc etc and I'm glad I was lucky enough to lived through that fabulous era!
1 was 18 in 1986 this song reminds me so much of my life back then the cars the music the friends , was the best time of my life and I miss it so much .ive got a good life now but if I was asked if I could go back would I ? yes I would . my father my brother and my girlfriend would still be here . like I said ive got a good life now but I had a great life back then .
I like this comment! I have always said that too, I would love to go back to that time. I was 14 in 1986. I love my life now but that time was special...everyone in our family was alive and well....there’s just something so special about the 80’s! It was good times and we knew it and felt it then.
I was 11 in 86 and I'm not from US or Uk, the most common music for me was abba, bee gees and stuff, Jim Reeves because of Christmas Carols..later on I've a solid of his collection..and then quicky by the years discovered all the best of 80s..from soft pop like these and the hair bands. I'm an ardent fan of that beautiful era..besides music even life was beautiful and simple back then..! Yes life is still good but damn the only thing I want desperately is a time machine!! Psychologically It maybe that with so much of chaos all around people do remember the best times of their life..and the best is always simple with no worries..for people now in 40s it was 80s..God bless!!
I was in grade 11 (turning sweet 16) and I shared a bedroom with my sister and two cousins (also sisters); yep crowded house, but so much love and laughter that year! And awesome 80s tunes too! No one can even come close to making this kind of music anymore. 💕💕💕
My sister n I also shared a room with sister cousins! Yep crowded house but so much love and laughter! The 80s! We were all teens ❤ what a time it was. Just innocent and enjoying our lives, going to highschool and experiencing wonderment!
There I was standing in the 80's. The prime of my life, and not even knowing it. I just thought it was going to go on forever. It just went by too fast.
@@JoelCat22 Same here, my friend! We were very lucky! I only wish my hair would have made it this far with me. haha. Oh, well, there are worse things in life. I hope all is well with you and your loved ones.
This is one of my absolutely favorite videos. I loved the ones that had dialogue throughout the video being spoken over the music. Made it more emotional and involving for me. Now that I’m older, this song makes me so melancholy! Think I’ll grab a beer, head to the beach, and watch the sun go down…by myself…
I remember this song during the 80s, my elementary years, michael, madonna, stx, reo, debbie gibson, what a hell of good singers in the 80s, NOTHING BEAT THE 80s
I know what you mean! I hated high school as well, but age 17 in 1984 was when my life finally got good, after a dreadful childhood. So this song will always have special meaning for me.
I know exactly how you feel. I was only 12 when this song came out. I still love this song as much then as I do now. Thank you Dennis Deyoung for this beautiful song ❤️❤️

Our 70s and 80s music was the biggest difference. The 80s news media was fairly civil, not vindictive and vitriolic.
You are so right! Very well stated.
There's no going back. If there was, we would all be back there.
I remember listening to this song in 1984, i was 19 year old soldier stationed at Ft. Sill. I miss those days, to be young again.
After the opening scene, Jim turned to me and said: "I had no idea where they were going with that."
After this video, anytime we'd say "where are you going" the answer was always: I don't know, maybe Chicago.
Great song, great video, great memories.
You watched this in mtv ? Is it a scene of a movie, soundtrack, or something ?

No doubt indeed

I lost my little brother last year. When I went to the military he said that he played my Lp on my stereo in my old room, and would think of me

When you think back to where you were when you first heard this song, you knew life would never be as good. Never let go of people, places and things that made you who you are, wherever your Desert Moon may be.
That's great advice, also great hindsight, I wish I'd never let go of some of those people and places 30 plus Yrs ago but you just don't know
I know this reply is so trite.

Perfectly said! It was a great pop music decade.
Song and video - Perfection!
Thanks to all those great 70s bands like Styx, who trucked on through the 80s! Without them it would have been pretty desolate.

My favourite part of the song is, I still can hear the echoes of the summer nights, it echoes in the corners of my heart. 👍
Probably one of the best videos ever. It's cinematic, tells a story, good stuff.
Probably? Try definetly
At this time, Dennis wasn't just being a " reluctant " solo artist, but he actually had screen tested for a several movies but had to turn them down for one reason or another.
