Good point. Downside is you are now focusing in live mode which is a bit pokey but it does give you back some control.
Glad I could help. Start watching my other videos and you will learn lots about your camera!
The AF/MF is the Auto Focus / Manual focus switch - in AF the camera will focus when you half-press the shutter. Manual focus - you must manually turn the ring on the lens to focus.
Papa - Thanks so much for taking a moment and letting me know. I appreciate it!
I do recommend it as a buy - Still don't recommend using it to autofocus during liveview but it is a tiny lens that offers good quality, decent close focus and a nice maximum aperture.
the 32GB Extreme card is a good card for photos and video. To record a video you need to flip the switch to the video icon(past ON) and press the liveview/record button on the back of the camera - it has a small red dot next to the button.
The 650D outputs cleaner, less noisy video in low light. in good light the two cameras are very similar. I will have a complete review at the end of this month.
Thanks, My wife just bought this camera for me for Christmas and I have a lot to learn! I appreciate your videos and explanations.
Hi Paul. You want to press the little button on the top right corner of the camera - it has a white box with dots inside or a - magnify glass. Press it while looking through the viewfinder and rotate the dial behind the shutter - you should see the little red dot move, keep rotating and it will eventually light up all boxes at once. that is the default. My preference is center point 90% of the time.
Glad I could help. The clip on lenses are not great - the image quality they offer is, in my opinion, not good. There are other cheap options that do provide some decent quality but you have to work at it. One of my followers on the facebook page recently tried the reversing ring and got decent results, pop over to my facebook page and I will link you to his results.
It is. My guess is that it is just so small the noise leaks out. The 18-135 is so much larger, more room to absorb the noise.
the ONLY video i followed well. Im a beginner and loved your descriptions! thank you
thank goodness to you, i just receive my camera and all your videos help a lot. Not one video on youtube makes me understand the functions like you do.
Hi - Tell me more about the type of video - the reason I ask - the STM lenses are good for informal events, family etc but if u are doing more serious work you still want to manual focus and in those cases it doesn't matter if you have an STM lens and something like 50 f/1.4 will give u better results. The sony is better at auto focus during video, the t4i is better than the D5200 so it comes down to what are your priorities. Happy to chat more - find me on FB where there aren't comment limits
Incredible. You are just awesome. I have been struggling with few of the modes. But you made it very clear. Excellent job done and thanks a ton.
Thank u for being so clear to understand & not treat us newbies as idiots..we do want to learn.
I just bought a T5i and am completely clueless, I Just finished watching your video and found it so much more easy to understand then the many others on here. Just so much to remember, to get use to and understand the lingo. Thank you, Toby
Hi Helene - glad to hear that! Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions and you might want to poke through my whole playlist ruclips.net/p/PLCUnGRSvb-aLtnE31FL9ROJgf1bxscQsN
thanks for the video! i just purchased the T4i and needed a guided tour through the functions and you provided that superbly.
thanks toby for taking me through my Canon. You demystified all those settings and have encouraged me to try them out and more importantly to get to know my P AV and Manual modes so that I can have the control over my camera and make me more creative. I am new to digit and I look forward to more videos from you.
Terry
Terry - Great - glad you have found these helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi It;s one year later March 2015 and what a difference a year makes. I have a studio set up in my basement, have been doing portraits for friends, Niece wants me to shoot her wedding \ have a mentor who I simply am in awe and will be assisting him. Wow . From a newbie to an enthusiast. Thanks again
great video, thank you....very clear and precise tutorial. I'm going to watch all your vids on the t4i and t5i.....thx again
Sweet! Thanks for letting me know and following along.
Thank you !!! I was searching all over internet and you tube video abot basic function of t5i. This vedio really helped and happy holiday .
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS! It's very helpful keep up the good work!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! I have been scouring the Internet for a comprehensive video to walk me through all the buttons on my T5i. Even though this particular tut was for the T4i, the features are similair enough to help me understand all those buttons. I am soooo grateful for this information and have subscribed to your channel. I don't know much about shooting still photography. I am a videographer and just bought the Rebel T5i for shooting video. Do you have any tutorials that are specific to shooting video? I order from Amazon almost every week so will make sure you get credit. Thanks again and keep the tuts coming!!!
If your camera is flashing Busy on the screen it means it is processing a photo, usually. Did you have HDR on? Were you shooting a very long exposure?
Hi - A good value macro is the 60mm f/2.8 from Canon. I added a link under the video. CLick more and scroll all the way to the bottom of the text. If you want to get closer you can consider the Tamron 90mm. Happy to answer more questions.
Just got this camera - this certainly helps to figure out a lot of bells and whistles for new users. Thanks.
the 18-135 STM is a better lens, more range, silent autofocus during video. The 18-55 isn't bad just not as good as the 18-135. I don't know where you got your camera so I can't really advise on how you should exchange it.
Thank you for that nice comment. We all started as newbies. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks a lot dude just bought this camera and I was totally lost.
I'll check your next videos.
Thanks for the lesson Toby! I owned my T4I for almost a year. Due to my ignorance, I never took it off the Automatic mode until your lesson. Needless to say, I will probably never go back to Auto thanks to you...
Rich! Awesome - love to hear that and feel free to ask questions anytime. here or on facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations
Very helpful! I’m getting one for my b-day
Sorry to hear you are having these troubles. Let's cover the basics first. Is the Autofocus turned on? Put the camera in A mode and take a picture of something. Did the flash pop up? now zoom all the way to 55 and take a picture? Did the flash pop up again? is it blurry? You may want to come over to my facebook page so we can have a longer conversation, it is linked under my video above. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful - don't hesitate to let me know if you have more questions and be sure to watch my other tip videos.
Great vid! I'm waiting for those other modes.
Your videos are extremely helpful to me. How did you capture the photo of the moon. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos! I have learned so much from your videos.
Thanks. I just got my camera and this was very helpful.
Just got my new T4i today (a big step up from my Rebel xti!!) Plan to go out and take photos tomorrow so this was a great quick overview. Thanks for putting on RUclips!
Thanks! The other video is up and linked at the end of this video.
Great videos. Easy to understand.
Great Video. For someone like me going from a camera a paid a $100 dollars for at Sears back in 2007 to a T4I is very overwhelming. I know little to nothing about all the little small details of the camera and I have resorted to using my cell phone camera on multible occasions do to the shere frustration of trying to figure this camera out. This video was very good and helped kinda explain all the different settings on the camera, Thanks again.
200mm zoom lens and I cropped the image lots. Thanks!
Your T4i is an 18MP camera. To check what image size you have set you can watch this video Canon T4i Menu System Explained or press menu and on the first tab make sure your size is set to L.
You are very welcome. Your LPS videos will soon be 1080p awesome with your T4i :)
Very easy to follow. Perfect intro.
What SD Card would you recommend for the T4i? The video was really helpful for me! Thank you
Thank you for this video!!! My husband and family surprised me with this camera! I was shocked to find they said that I have a really good eye for taking photos! I just snapped them for fun, but they say I really know how to capture a moment! See I get fantastic shot, but the quality is so disappointing, and ruins the moment that I have captured! :( I want to go to school for photography, but I have to wait until my husband graduates first! You are really helpful to someone who doesn't understand all the lingo!!!! I will keep watching your videos!! Again, THANK YOU! xoxoxoxo
Hi Toby, I sincerely hope that Toby is your 1rst name and if not I apologize. I am very new to the art world of photography and I must say after watching hours and hours of videos I must say that your videos are the most impressive. Secondly Toby since I'm as old as the invention of the wheel and not to familiar with this new Social Media thing how can one find your Facebook page or wall? I thank you in advance for any help on this matter and keep them videos coming, learning so much.
Rene - I am sorry I didnt see this message earlier. My facebook page facebook.com/Digital.Photo.Recommendations and I appreciate the comment/compliment. I hope you can find your way over there and I am always happy to answer questions.
Hi, Mr.Toby!! I finally got T4i just yerterday. Your various vids helped me a lot to decide of my choice. Thank you Mr.Toby for your awesome tutorial. A very structured and great presenter. Hoping to see more superb vids from you. And of course if do face any difficulties beyond my control, I would definitely seek advise from you. Thanks once again and always take care.
You are quite welcome. Please let me know if you have any questions and feel free to suggest topics for future videos/tutorials.
Thanks - Don't hesitate to ask questions and like my facebook page to be notified of new videos, blog posts and giveaways!
Thanks for saying thanks! I appreciate it.
Very nicely explained. Thank you for making a nice video like this.
I am sorry to say no. You can buy the 18-135 STM, that is why they sell that lens it is completely silent during autofocus during video. You can also not autofocus during video - professionals all rely on manual focus. On my todo list is to create a video that shows how I autofocus using quick focus before the video starts and then manually focus. Obviously doesn't work for all situations. You can also use an external audio recorder to capture video. Happy to chat about those options.
I am glad I could help. I have loads more videos and I am happy to answer questions. You might want to join my facebook page, lots of tips and helpful info posted there. link under video.
Sandisk Extreme - I just added a link under the video. Best value/performance in my opinion.
I'm new to this type of camera and want to learn as much as I can. Do you have any how to videos on the cameras all around function.
very helpful, thank you, i love watching your videos!
Great video here, thanks for all the useful tips. i especially liked the tip about making subjects stay still a bit longer when using night portrait mode due the shutter staying open longer.
Thank you for sharing the video. It helps a lot as I just got my new DSLR camera and don't know how to use it :(
This was a super awesome cool video. Learnt a lot. Infact, worth my time!! But do you think eos 650d was a good hoice for me to buy!! Just bought it recently.
You are very welcome. Let me know if there are any other subjects you would like to see covered.
Hi Toby, Thank you for the informative video, keep up the good work.
Cheers
Jon
Happy to help. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.
Mostly Agreed - In general you should spend very little time on this side of the dial - P, TV, AV and M are your friends and are not nearly as scary as they seem.
Hi toby nice vids.
I have a wee prob in that the focus points that appear when looking through the view finder seem to be fixed on the far left one. Can you tell how to change this these focus points or direct me to a vid you have that explains the focus points?
Cheers
Paul
Alex, Great! let me know if you have any questions.
I got lots more videos - watch those :) I shoot 99% of the time in RAW - it gives you a better digital negative but you do need to have a program that will helpfully handle RAW files- Lightroom is excellent. The A+ mode should be used only until you get used to the camera - you want to move toward Av and M, they will give you better results.
I really appreciate this :) Thank You.
Thank you for these videos. I've had my T4i for two years and just wasn't getting the most out of it. I still can't get my external flash to work, so any advice would be awesome.
thank you so much for ur time toby, i did exchange at bestbuy today and now im so happy about my camera, would you explain to me a lil bit about exposure and how does it works, good or bad?
Very useful , thanks you
i just bought a canon t5i. will this guide teach me or do you have a t5i guide video
Thank you!
Hi, what's a good macro lens for the canon t4i (650d) ? At a fair price. Thanks and video was very helpful.
Wow! you made everything so simple :) thank you!
I believe the factor 1.6 is applicable for only EF 18-135 type lenses, but not for EF -S 18-135 in T4i or any other non-full frame camera sensors. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I like your videos which are really useful when I forget the operations of the camera. Thanks
Glad I could help. let me know if you have any questions. You may want to pop over and like my facebook page, I will have a nice giveaway starting soon.
can u tell me which camera i buy for photography Canon eos 600d,Canon eos 650d,Nikon d5200 with kit lense?
Hey Toby, another question, can you recommend any on-camera dslr microphones for video?
hi toby im using sandisk extreme 32gb and is it good for photo and record video on my t4i? and how do you record ur video, this is my first camera and i love to watch ur video, thank you
Thanks! I would not even try those modes, now I know what those emotic icons means ;)
Correct.
Thank you! Let me know if there are future topics you would like to see covered in a video tutorial.
As always Toby, excellent!
Thank you for these explanations!
Oh nice - that is good to know.
I just posted a video that should help explain some of that. If you have a specific question let me know.
Lots of folks like the Rode Video Mic, I just added a link above for that!
Does the AF / MF on the STM lens have anything to do with the basic shooting modes on the camera? can they effect the picture?
F-stop is aperture and It doesn't really matter if the lens is USM or not. I talk about aperture in a video called Aperture & Depth of Field /watch?v=TlmvlE_HLTw
Hey toby . rocommend canon 650d or nikon d5200 . and which is best for video?
HELP.. I bought this camera last week and when I record video, the sound doesn't record?? I just hear noise when I play back the video on the camera or computer.. is there a setting I need to change to record real sound??
What's the best to buy first, to start using for post processing? Lightroom , Elements or Photomatic?
Watch Photo Editors: Photoshop vs Lightroom vs Elements I don't have much experience with Photomatic?
CameraRec Toby Thanks, i'll check out the Photo Editors vid.
