    Dude, this video was so helpful! I just took a couple out to practice shooting this past weekend, and had a lot of problems with the camera focusing on what it wanted to focus on... instead of what I wanted it to. Had no idea I could just tap the screen to select a focus point. Also, disabling continous autofocus was a lifesaver. Thanks so much!

    I have watched this video tutorial several times and I always learn something. It's the best video tutorial on this subject and a great way to refresh our knowledge of our camera capabilities. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.

    Yes - liveview uses a good amount of juice - both the display running (it is the resolution of a small desktop monitor) and the constant power to the sensor. The tricky bit about the viewfinder is showing what I am seeing, will see what I can do. Thanks!

    Your videos are awesome. Thanks

    This depends on what mode you are in. In P mode you can hold the AV button down and rotate the dial you can also touch it to show +/- 5 stops and select the desired exposure.

  • @photorectoby

    at 6:33 I show this. I found out that they cannot be changed via the button and wheel method in live view but the button and wheel DO work when looking through the viewfinder.

    Turn the camera switch to ON, Set dial to A+ and press the button on the back of the camera with a red dot next to it, just above top right corner of the screen.

    I set my T4i to Quick Mode focusing using the center focus point. I also set the focus choice to Servo AI rather than One Shot or Focus AI so I can shoot moving objects. While the AI Servo focusing doesn't work in live view with Quick Mode selected it does work if using the viewfinder. With live view off I can hold down the back button (set up for back button focusing) and move the camera from subject to subject and the camera auto focuses continuously and very quickly. Just thought I'd share that fact. Thanks, and great channel.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Sorry I missed these - Put the camera into AF quick mode, you do that by turning Live View on, pressing the Q button and selecting the AF method in the top left corner of the screen. AF Quick displays the small focus points. You touch to select the one you want. If you are not in AF Quick mode you can simply touch on the screen to focus.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Oh absolutely- I mean it gets close most of the time - the camera wants to expose everything as 18% gray value. The reason they have full manual mode is so you have complete control over the exposure. You should pick up Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure - excellent book.

  • @photorectoby

    You have touch to shutter enabled (small icon in bottom left corner) and you currently have the camera on two second delay. Switch it back to single picture or continuous.

    Yes - the nine points used for auto focus. You see them light up when they get focus.

    You have your aspect ratio set to something other than 3:2. Probably 16:9. Aspect ratio can be changed on one of the red screens (can't remember which at the moment)

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Number of shots left on the SD card until it is full. The camera estimates the shots remaining but each shot can vary a good deal based on the scene, so sometimes the resulting file size is small enough that it doesn't count toward an image taken. Hope that helps. I have lots more tips and always happy to answer questions here or on my FB page which is linked under video.

  • @photorectoby

    Press the recording button on the back of the camera, when the switch is ON that activates live view. When the switch is set to Video it starts a recording.

    I thought I replied to this- The D5200 will give you best results but the T4i is easier to use the 18-135 STM lens with the T4i is an excellent value.

    I have a 700D, and am having trouble getting the camera to focus evenly on ALL of a scene. For example, in this video, how would I get both plants sharply in focus? Similarly, photographing two people, one in foreground, one behind- how to get both faces in focus? Thanks for the fantastic videos!

    Lots of variables here so it is difficult to give a clear answer. Shoot at the widest possible aperture and increase your ISO as high as possible so that you avoid blur from capturing subjects moving or shaking the camera. I have a video on avoiding camera shake and how to figure that out - send me a message on facebook, linked under video and I can provide the link.

    Hi Toby...really excellent videos. I think that I've been watching you talk about the 5200 and T4i for almost an hour now. :-)
    Question...I will be using my DSLR (haven't purchased yet) for mostly video and a bit for still. I feel like the samples that I am seing online show the T41 ahead of the 5200 both in color and noise levels. Also, the audio seems a bit better with the Cannon. Are you seeing the same thing?

    On the live view mode, you said the number in the brackets on the top left corner was the number of shots left. Does that mean the number of shots left capable of the camera itself before it goes bad? Im a bit confused. Also, I had my image on large jpeg but each time i took a picture, the number did not go down like how yours did. Is that suppose to happen? Im sorry, very new to cameras and this is my first dslr. any help would be appreciated! Thanks. :)

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Nope the metering works in ALL modes - in Manual mode it just shows you where it thinks your exposure is in relation to the one the camera thinks is correct. In all other modes it adjusts at least one setting to put your exposure in the middle (again the one the camera thinks is most correct).

    When I use the Live View to set up my shots, my regular shutter release button on the top of the body is disabled; what am I doing wrong?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад

      Are you sure it is disabled. It may just be slow to get focus and the camera won't take a phot until it gets focus. try this. On the side of the lens switch the AF MF to MF so camera won't get focus and now in live view press the shutter button. Does it take a pic right away?

    • @jamesnolan1679
      @jamesnolan1679 10 лет назад

      You're right; If I go to MF, the shutter button works. Thanks for the tip---I'll just have to focus manually if I want to use the Live View. It's great having a resource like you around. I'm over 80 and the new technology sometimes can overwhelm you.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад

      James Nolan Well that was just a test- you shouldn't have to only focus manually. It tells me that it is indeed having trouble focusing during live view and it won't let you take the photo. Switch the live view focusing to Flexizone single point and then touch a high contrast area - that will help it focus faster.

    • @jamesnolan1679
      @jamesnolan1679 10 лет назад +1

      CameraRec Toby Switching back to AF still prevents use of regular shutter but at least I can use Lie View and shutter button using MF. I'l continue to experiment and see what results I get when I go out on a photo trek. Thanks again.

  • @photorectoby
    @photorectoby  11 лет назад

    Hi Mrs B - what is in focus is controlled by your focus point and more importantly your depth of field. Which is controlled by your aperture - the larger the number the more that will be in focus. I have a video that explains aperture and depth of field paste this after youtube[dot]com /watch?v=TlmvlE_HLTw in the URL bar. It is important to note that the higher the number the less light reaches your sensor-so you need higher ISO or slower shutter.
