    I have a tip for fishermen at Convict Lake: Collect some of the discarded fishing line that litters the shore and is tangled in the trees before you leave for the day.

  • @CBeard849
    @CBeard849 5 лет назад +5

    That spot where the trees are where you said it was steep and hard to get to.....30 years ago my brothers and I were sitting there fishing when a 4.5 earthquake hit very near the lake and we had to duck behind one of those big trees to avoid the boulders that were shook loose....some about 3 feet across! Sometimes it's not the fishing you remember. Convict Lake is so beautiful.

    Great video, I've always fished the southeast side. Last year we had to fish the beachy area you showed. It's great like you said if you have younger kids. Fishing was on the slower side, but we have killed it there before. The inlet (west) has always been a great spot, but I don't like to hike, so never go there. Some of my friends rented a boat and did well near the inlet.

    my son and I fished Convict for the first time early June 2018. First day fished south shore and lost a lot of tackle, very rocky. Second day rented a boat and caught 2 near the end of the lake. Thanks for the video, wish I had seen before our trip.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  5 лет назад +1

      The convict can be tough to fish especially for people that don't know the lake but typically South Shore are the roads and can be pretty good but the best spots are near the outlet in the first few bushy coves it's just hard to cast there with the big trees around you. The outlet can be really good too if you don't cast out too far. The fish tend to hang out really close to where the water comes in. Conditions at the lake really affect where the holdover fish will be. Lures work really good there if you let them sink,..and will help you locate bigger schools of fish

    Subbed. Like your videos showing places to fish. I used to fish with my dad as a young teen, but we only went to few places close by. Grew up in Rialto, so we spent a lot of time at lake Perris, a couple times to Big Bear and went camping at Lake San Antonio many times. Now that I have a 7 yr old son and another son on the way (due in Feb) I want to take them fishing. Where are good places and times of year near Riverside that I can take my sons. I just want them to catch something so they will enjoy it and want to keep going back. Would like to make it a father son tradition. I am not very good since I havent fished since I was a young teen and I'm just starting back up in my 40's, so I need practice as well. Thanks for the videos, very helpful

    I caught my biggest trout at Convict (4 pounder) many years ago.
    Our absolute largest trout was at Silver Lake on our two man kayak. It was so large I couldn't even net it. My GF in the front seat had it on her line and I was paddling like crazy to keep up with the fish as were using 2 pound line! Just when we got it to the kayak, while trying to net it with an obviously too small of a net, it bent the hook and swam off!
    Our best day of fishing at Convict was on our two man kayak. The water was so clear we could actually see where the trout were. We just had to keep out of range of the shore fishermen.
    Last year (2018), we couldn't even find a parking space! Convict is just too crowded anymore in the peak summer time.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  5 лет назад

      I have float tubed all the way to the West end of the lake. You have to go early so the wind will push you back to the boat dock when it picks up in the middle or afternoon. Most tubers hang around the outlet but it gets very windy and they get pushed off by midday or afternoon.on calm days you might see quite a bit of them near the outlet there is some really good fishing along the bowl drop off just west of the outlet

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  4 года назад

      I'd say the answer depends how good y'all are with boats. If you're pretty familiar with using and controlling them, especially in high winds you're better with a boat at convict. (Convict is famous for high winds) Let me know how you think they'd do boating wise, then I can make some recommendations.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  Год назад +1

      Really depends on what the weather is doing. The wind can really rip that time of year so if it's super windy I wouldn't even fish it but if it's not windy I would focus on the inlets on the west side of the lake or the rock jetty area near the boat dock. Fish the drop offs along there and you should do pretty well. There are fish spread throughout the whole lake though... depth and what you're using is important more than location as a whole

    Taking the kids up next week, never been this late in the year. Usually camp at the bottom of Tioga and fish Lake Ellery. Ellery is pretty good fishing, not many giants but lots of action for the kids. Any thoughts or recommendations? Would it be worth fishing convict? Never have before. Convict is windy in the fall as most times of the year... But it's going to be very cold and windy. Outside of that the fishing will be pretty good from the rock jetty and the South Beach (wedding beach), and inlet I described in the video. Use lots of scent... Heavy Bang Garlic spray. If in the area try the upper Owens too. Definitely throw Thomas lures... Cast far, let them sink... Reel slow. Intake 2 in Bishop Creek canyon has been getting a lot of plants, as well as lake Mary in Mammoth.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  5 лет назад

      I have float tubed it... and it's awesome by float tube. HOWEVER. (big however) This lake tends to get super duper windy from about 11am-sunset most summer days. In the spring it's worse... but if you tube in the morning near the rock jetty you'll definitely do well. Look for drop offs and big rocks under water and try there. That whole outlet area is great by tube. Bring a good anchor. As for rented boats, I've done that a bunch too... it's a very good option if you plan on fishing it most of the day. I tend to like the afternoon action by boat. Especially near the back of the lake

      A lot depends on your fishing ability, if you have a boat, float tube, how far you can walk? Kids? That stuff all plays into the choices on what to do at Convict. This video gives you the best breakdown of what's what. Time of year isn't a factor except more crowds. Water stays cold there year-round. If you see bugs on the surface, cast out some spoons.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  4 года назад +2

      Thats awesome! Depending on where you're fishing.. The water is super clear at Convict, with little weed growth. I recommend keeping your baits small, and bright. Gulp Eggs, or "power eggs" on a #8 mosquito hook in Yellow, Chart, or Orange. If you want to use powerbait, stick with Orange, Corn, or Salmon Peach. Keep ball of bait small. Try tossin' thomas lures if you want to use spoons. I have a lot of luck there using spoons, it's mainly what I choose to use. Stick with Gold or Copper. 1/6th OZ. thomas bouyants or Thomas cyclones. Dont' be afraid to try those "Gulp Pinched Crawlers for bait too, same rig as gulp eggs. Sometimes they want something more natural. Convict is also one of the few lakes i've seen nightcrawlers do very well.

    What about the deep areas?

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  28 дней назад +1

      This water remains pretty cold year-round because of the flows in and out... Therefore, the fish rarely go beyond the 45-ft level.. there are a few fish that can be found a little deeper than that depending on the conditions, but generally they are not that deep.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  5 лет назад

      Yes, there are a few in the brush surrounding the lake. Typically only in the hottest times of year, which is July-August.

    If I go what should I fish with

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  4 года назад

      Depends on your skill level... if new to fishing. Powerbait, using slide egg sinker set up (Google image it) #14 to #18 treble hooks. #4lb test or 2lb if you're good at reeling in fish.

      All in the video my man. Stick to that and you should be good. Just avoid center of the lake or fishin deep. The rest is up to your skills and what you're using.
