Kansas was founded and is still driven by the drummer Phil Ehart. their 70s output is phenomenal as you just heard. they lost their way for awhile but they are back! i have recently seen both Kansas and BOC. they are both re energized by a few younger players alongside the remaining original members. dont miss out on seeing these guys bringing the music to life every night. you wont be disappointed.

Yep, Phil put the band together & is still the main driving force along with Rich & the most underrated drummer in prog history. And he's still performing at such a high level, incredible. Not only are they technically brilliant, the unique Kansas sound & songwriting legacy created by Kerry & Steve & the boys during this golden period is alive & well with the current incarnation, this band has always had a soul, long may they continue.

    Thanks Chod!
One of the most important bands and periods of artistic talent in the industry.
Kansas made prog accessible to the mainstream with huge hits.
DUST IN THE WIND and CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON brought listeners in and gave them a window into some of the"cutting edge" artistry.
Gentle Giant was formed in 1970 and Kansas was formed in 73, so there was probably a lot of mutual influence.
Sadly, Gentle Giant disbanded in 1980 but left giant footprints on prog rock.
Kansas was active from 73 to 84, but regrouped in 85... their singles and LPs didn't chart much after the 'regroup' and you would need a supercomputer to keep track of the lineup changes, but they are still performing to this day.
Sadly, one of their leading musicians, Robby Steinhardt, violins and vocals, passed away July 17, 2021.
Remembered as the link between the audience and the band, Robby provided the MC duties for their live performances.
His unique sound, voice and harmonies with Steve Walsh provided that 'lift' to the Kansas sound during their most successful period.

The version from " Two For The Show " is even better, the violin is more dominant...
The song is composed of six different parts(one per band member), they put the parts together in the studio...the song was originally called " Leftoverture ", but it was decided to make that the title of the album...see the Kansas documentary " Miracles Out Of Nowhere " and Kerry Livgren's autobiography " Seeds Of Change " for more details
The Gentle Giant comparison is apt here, the band members have expressed admiration for GG...

I had memorized all the songs while I was a teenager in the 70's, so when you listen to all this great music over, and over, soon enough, if it resonates with you, it will get inscribed.
We would listen to entire albums back then, so an album like Leftoverture would have multiple vinyl copies, from so many repeated plays. It was a Music Renaissance back then.

Dude! Transitions are a staple of progressive rock. All the prog bands did them: Yes, Uriah Heep, early Supertramp, Peter Gabriel's Genesis, Jethro Tull, Marillion, etc etc.
Also, just want to say, the only thing Kansas and Gentle Giant have in common are those transitions (ie they're both prog bands) but GG is, well, an acquired taste (as they say so themselves in one of their album titles haha). I do enjoy GG, but I really need to be in the mood, it's very out-there. Kansas I could listen to anytime (especially their first 5 albums).

Just before the battle they all reflect on their family and loved ones. In minutes, they will fiercely fight the good fight for freedom. The hand to hand combat is intense but the oppressors have been defeated. They return home victorious, triumphant over evil.........................................and they live happily ever after.

I would describe this as 1960s-1970s "Orchestral Rock". There are actually several bands of the era who experimented with music this way. Frank Zappa definitely comes to mind, King Crimson, The Doors, The Beatles. Some of these compositions by Kansas could be converted to symphonic orchestra compositions. "Opus Insert" and "Cheyenne Anthem" are 2 more great examples from this album.

@@crusheverything4449 didn't know that. But it's not surprising. Most of the great musicians can't read music.
Wish I could remember more but... I'm losing my memory quickly. Few too many accident induced concussions.
My once photographic memory is now fragmenting.
      That and old age...
      ✌️

Only Robbie (Violin) was able to read music, They just played this song which BTW was originally name "Leftoverture" because its made up of left over parts from other songs, they renamed this song "Magnum Opus" which means Greatest Work.

Love that you’re a Raider fan! Kansas & Rush are my two favorite bands!! Rush’s Xanadu, listen to it. I just found you, so if you’ve done Xanadu, I apologize!

The musicianship that it took to write this is unbelievable. Prog is a hard genre to be able to understand unless you've been a fan of it for awhile and can understand the complexity of it. Each instrument seemed to be doing its own thing and seem to be going in different directions where it's hard to keep up with each one when listening to it but then they change up all of a sudden in a way to where each instrument comes together and starts to flow in the same direction again. The tempo, time changes and signatures are more difficult in prog

What makes Kansas better than Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush and all the dozens of other bands that play complex above-pop music is that it is more musical than those called “progressive bands. What makes the difference? Well the answer is that Kansas had that classical music influence to a higher degree than other bands. The majority of the credit goes to the keyboardist/guitarist of the band called Kerry Livgren. He wrote or co-wrote the majority of the complex classical type songs in this band. Though he was a great singer and songwriter, Steve Walsh did not have the songwriting ability that Livgren did. Even in early Kansas shows where you saw Walsh playing so much keyboard, most of what he was playing was written by Livgren. This is from a mega-fan of all the original members. Almost all their albums up to Audio-Visions had every song on the album being good. Vinyl Confessions came close but not quite there.

A great band and they do have a Live album that won't get you into trouble with RUclips. You must check out 'Ever the Same' by David Sancious & Tone. the drums are superb and for some reason no one reacts to it. Get well soon Brother.
