As a lifelong Kansas fan since ‘76, you just hit one of my top 2. Pure greatness. If the HOF had any brains, they would be there. They are better than most bands already in.
This Kansas fan's favorite Kansas song. 47 years later, still fresh, still fascinating. Musically, their great teamwork on display, and Steve Walsh just magnificent on vocals, perfection. Lyrically, another one of Kerry Livgren's spiritually searching pieces, but can also be interpreted as overcoming obstacles. Chod, you mentioned them doing the whole album live, they have actually done so, and is on a live album called " Leftoverture and Beyond " RIP Robby Steinhardt 🎻
I just saw them in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. The new violin player did Robby proud. It was a great show. Their 50th Anniversary Tour. I first saw them in Milwaukee in 1974 when they were the backup band for Hawkwind.
@@CuzKatieSaysSo I've seen some concert clips with Joe D...he is spectacular, he has skills and passion, like Robby Steinhardt in his prime. I get to see them next month... looking forward to it
the main violinist through Kansas' history was Robby Steinhardt (RIP) who also played cello & viola for the band as well as vocals. he's the reason for the popularity of violins in prog rock bands.
As a fellow musician, I love your reactions and your appreciation for bands like Kansas and Yes, ect... As an 18 yr. older when all of these albums came out, We were still learning songs from bands like Grand Funk Railroad, the Doobie Brothers, the Stones and CSNY to play out. Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Boston, Kansas, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull amongst many others were exploding on the airwaves (FM) and it was too time consuming to keep up. Not to mention, Steely Dan, Fogelburg, Seals and Crofts, The Who, Zeppelin as well as the Allman Bros., Heart, Foghat, both Winter Bros., ARS, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne only to name a small few. Needless to say, we never lacked for good music to listen to. Our band also had a 20 song set of just 50’s tunes. It was a great time to be a young musician. I listen to tons of “America” and “Eagles” lately to enjoy my acoustic guitar. I started as a drummer, like you, and still have my acoustic kit of concert Pearls (45 yrs. old) that I still kick around on from time to time. Enjoy your youth. It is permanent, but fleeting !! Carry on...
On their live album, Two For The Show, this is part of a 3 song medley: Mysteries & Mayhem, Excerpt from Lamplight Symphony, The Wall. Check out their Song For America (2nd album) and Masque (3rd album) albums. Great stuff. the beauty of the 70's and 80's is that every band had their own sound. When a song came on the radio, you knew exactly who the band was.
Wow man I already like the reaction. It's a really well-written song, but I really do like pretty much all of the instrument performances involved in it.
One of my favorite KANSAS songs. Next would be *Lamplight Symphony * I cry every time I hear it because it reminds me of my father. My mom died at 63 in 1989, and Dad never dated, not once after she left. He died in 2016, so that was a long time for him to be missing her. Jeez, I can't even talk about it without crying. Miss them both. I hope somewhere over the rainbow they're fishing in an idyllic lake in northern Wisconsin.
This is my favorite song on this album. I believe that this album is the greatest album ever made. If you listen to every song on both sides of the album each and every one of them is GREAT! From the musicianship of each song, to the vocals, to the arrangement reflects nothing less than brilliance. Then add the lyrics of each song and then there's no equal. The words in every song on this album is so insightful and poetically constructed that theirs no album it's equal. And this song, The Wall, is a master piece. The story how sometimes in our lives the path that we have chosen doesn't workout the way we want it to and thus we are faced with a WALL that we must confront in order to proceed unto our chosen destiny or choose another path. Such a brilliant song. Kerry Livgren doesn't get enough recognition for his song writing ability. He's a genius. I'm soooooo glad you are listening to this song. This and Hold On from their Audio Vision album sum up so much of what life is about and what challenges one will face during our lifetime. Even the album cover is a MASTERPIECE. There's one thing I'd like to suggest and that's listen to the entire album in the exact order as on the album and with the lyrics to each song in front of you......
As a drummer like you, I pay close attention to the fills that Phil plays, he is so damn good. Leftoverture is such a masterpiece and we knew it when it first came out how good it was.
I've listened to this song so many times since the album was released and I STILL get goosies every single time. A perfect blend of composition, playing and vocals that will never get old for me.
I think it fitting you followed this with Castle Walls by Styx. The year before they recorded The Grand Illusion Styx were on tour with Kansas. And Tommy Shaw has stated that tour with Kansas inspired Styx to greater heights creatively.
To understand Kansas you must recognize that the principal song writer (Kerry Livgren) was searching for meaning to his own life (which is what most of the songs are about). Livgren found Jesus through his quest to understand his own life and his true purpose and left Kansas to spend the rest of his life working in the gospel music business. Likewise, Dave Hope (bassist) left Kansas to become a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The level of musicianship of Kansas does not exist today in a "main stream" sort of way. I am glad I grew up with this music in the 70s when I was in high school. I got to meet Steve Walsh (singer) once and chatted with him for about 45 minutes while the stage was being set up. He was a nice guy indeed. Down to earth for sure.
Kansas' masterpiece. You gotta do Miracles out of Nowhere from this same album. It's awesome. and RIP Robby Steinhart, the classically trained violinist who's playing helped take Kansas to another level.
Facts...this album is prog rock greatness - it's technical, complex and diverse, but never loses its intrinsic musicality and listenability (far too many prog bands take innovation/technique too far, and lose the essence of what music should be), and I love it for that. Cheers!
The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side 🤯 !! The way you were speaking of the band Kansas in itself , You could also put Supertramp in that category ! I know how much you liked "Child of Vison"
Beautiful tune. You can tell by listening to this particular song that they were big fans of prog-era Genesis. I hear some of Tony Banks inspired compositional elements in this song.
I'm glad you've begun your journey down the Kansas rabbit hole. If you like that symphonic-orchestra prog rock sound, their first 5 albums have some incredible songs including Song For America, The Pinnacle, Apercu and Journey From Mariabronn just to name a few. Highly recommend diving deeper into their music!
Correct. Big Red on the violin Kerry Livgren (piano/guitar) wrote most of the stuff. He was on a huge creative high here. Well if you went to their concerts............THIS piece if you delve into the lyrics, and the spiritual journey Kerry Livgren went through as he was writing this masterpiece...you would understand. This song is incredibly emotional and meaningful to so many. We get it. And i pray you do too..........Really enjoy your reviews !!!
Good channel Reactor 2 . Kansas is my 1st concert 1978 and they have left an indelible mark on me. Your right about this song being quite different from the rest .. in a good way! Suggest you get the lyrics and listen again. They are worth it
There's a early er song by Kansas that doesn't get a lot of reaction time called Your Reason To Be, really a haunting and beautiful song. React to it you will not be disappointed!♥️✌️
Kansas were always prog from album one. See Beato on the brilliance of Carry On Wayward Son. Wayward son, by the way, is a companion piece to Icarus: Borne on the Wings of Steel on Masque, Masque remains my favourite Kansas album and is, for me, the most proggy. You can hear a lot of mediaeval musical forms on Masque which makes Kansas the most Gentle Giantish of bands.
Leftoverture, was Kansas at their best. Masque and Point of Know Return very good. They were hitting on all cylinders, during these three albums. Lucky to be in high school at the time, to enjoy this great music.
Great Reaction to an awesome song! I would like to see what you think and feel about their song, "Icarus(Bourne On Wings Of Steel)" , from the Masque album. Thanks..
Disappointed you didn't listen to the lyrics at all. Interesting message in this song! It's about a journey of emotional self searching, the struggle of taking the harder of two paths. I found it relatable and insightful as a teen. This song follows "Carry On Wayward Son" on the album. The song after "The Wall" is "What's On My Mind" It's a good one too❤
I believe this is the greatest album of all time. Every Single Song is brilliant! A MASTERPIECE. There's only a handful of albums that are in that category and they are Carol Kings Tapestry, Boston's first album Boston, Billy Joel's 52nd Street, and AC/DC Back In Black sneaks in there because every single song is not masterful like the others but is a HEAD BANGER from when the needle drops until it reaches the end. I'd also add the Gin Blossoms New Age Experiment in that conversation. What a fantastic album...
That’s pretty much how the song starts. You might have missed like a half second. Great song from their classic album Leftoverture. Chod, as you probably know, it’s Prog rock, and early Kansas’ music was in that style. You should just listen to the rest of the songs in this album that you’ve not heard. 🔥
As a lifelong Kansas fan since ‘76, you just hit one of my top 2. Pure greatness. If the HOF had any brains, they would be there. They are better than most bands already in.
Leftoverture!!! What a freakin' masterpiece. That word gets thrown around a lot, but this album is the very definition.
Yes! My 2nd favorite album ever!!
Do you know how/why this album got it's name? Agree though...great stuff!
The band Kansas were, and are big Gentle Giant fans
Spiritual awakening…Saw them a few times over the years, brilliance is not enough to explain the true talents of this band! Cheers
This Kansas fan's favorite Kansas song. 47 years later, still fresh, still fascinating. Musically, their great teamwork on display, and Steve Walsh just magnificent on vocals, perfection. Apercu and Song for America......Sparks of the tempest for something insanely prophetic.
My first Kansas album back in the days, and I had the same kind of experience you did, still gives the chills today
This album gives you a SYMPHONIC/SYMPHONY LIKE feeling. It's because all of these guys are classically trained!
When you said it gives you peace, I think you hit the nail on the head with that!
Thank you for another great reaction. It's so nice to hear your thoughtful insights again ❤
I also enjoy his insights.
Kansas is Prophetic 📜
great tune.
Live version from 1978 live album is incredible, epic live band, Steve Walsh in vocals.
You have got to hear "Masque". That's where all the great creativeness lies.
Wow man I already like the reaction. It's a really well-written song, but I really do like pretty much all of the instrument performances involved in it.
First time I see your reaction series and you mention Gentle Giant. Awesome.
That album and every song on it is a masterpiece.
So beautiful and POWERFUL! A True Masterpiece Shaped by God and Molded by KANSAS!

Nashville.. l've seen Kansas 3 times. 1979, 80, 91. All front row seats. Greatness!..Steve Walsh was at the top of his game ..
Their next album Point of Know Return just as amazing. It is the violin genius of Robby Steinhardt, who we unfortunately lost in 2021.
Great show!. I wore out a cassette copy and a album copy of this one.

YES !!!!
Potential? They're Epic

Miracles out of Nowhere is a phenomenal song from this album! Once you get done with this album check out Point Of Know Return!
By far this their best song. I grew up on this album.

I saw these guys practicing in a storage unit in Jonesboro, GA in the 70’s. It was freaking incredible!
One of the greatest albums ever made.
Livgren is such a fantastic song writer.
‘The moment is a masterpiece…’. And so is this song. Epic. My favorite song bynthem
Hey Chod! Welcome back! Leftoverture should be listened to in its entirety. It is Kansas' masterpiece!😎
@Gary Cottam I wish. Chod hasn't done YES in forever!!!😎
I’ve requested this for my funeral whenever that happens. As entire albums go this one has been my favorite since it came out.
Kansas' masterpiece.
You gotta do Miracles out of Nowhere from this same album.
It's awesome.
and RIP Robby Steinhart, the classically trained violinist who's playing helped take Kansas to another level.
This album and Point Of No Return is a masterpiece as well! Phenomenal musicians as well!
GO SEE Kansas! They are on tour. I just saw their show where they played the entire Point of Know Return album 2 years ago. Incredible concert.
it's a very spiritual album. if you get a good vibe from it, it did exactly what it was supposed to.
The latest Kansas album is called Absence Of Presence, Phenomenal! Check it out! My favorite is Throwing Mountains!
I’ll say it again & again the 70s had no boundaries so much talent so much great music , the singing unreal , but I know it was real I lived it
Facts...this album is prog rock greatness - it's technical, complex and diverse, but never loses its intrinsic musicality and listenability (far too many prog bands take innovation/technique too far, and lose the essence of what music should be), and I love it for that. Cheers!
"He Knew" "Icarus Born on Wings of..." "What's on my Mind"
Banger album cuts.
That`s why he`s Phil. He adds his fills.
Real music with real meaning, lost in today's world of commercialism and never to be duplicated.
Kansas is the best progressive American band. This was high school for me, with Pink Floyd, Yes, Supertramp and others!
Phil Ehart is such an underrated drummer.
SO YOU'RE DOING A RUN ON THIS GEM ( LEFTOVERTURE ) ARE YA CHOD? 😊 YOU LOVE THAT REALLLL GOOD PROG I CAN TELL, IT'S JUST SO GOOD! 😊
I would like to see what you think of. Sparks of the Tempest by Kansas Released on: 1977-10-11 Album Point Of Know Return
They do sound like this live,,Do yourself a favor and see them live..Few different members but still flawless. You'll thank me later!
The whole Leftoverture album is great, as is Point Of Know Return
Every time I’d see Kansas live, I’d always forget about songs they did, and it was always such a pleasant surprise. Same with Styx.
Welcome to Kansas. So much music to explore. You should start at the beginning with the self titled Kansas
The Greatest Album from COVER TO CONTENT..... It has No Equal.
Leftoverture saw them when the album hit and just recently nov 17 in Tulsa, Great album the best besides Masque.
You should absolutely do this whole album and do it in one take.
The riches that I seek are waiting on the other side 🤯 !! The way you were speaking of the band Kansas in itself , You could also put Supertramp in that category ! I know how much you liked "Child of Vison"

Correct. Big Red on the violin
Kerry Livgren (piano/guitar) wrote most of the stuff. He was on a huge creative high here. The band was even amazed at his songwriting during this period
His subject theme was a spiritual journey. He tried numerous religions and eventually became a born again Christian
Couple of recommendations
Kansas is still touring, going on a Major 50th anniversary tour this year. Still have the guitarist and drummer with them but the new lineup is smoking. Talented bunch
Go see them while you can.
And yes, they did cover the entire album on its anniversary a few years ago
And also yes, Gentle Giant was an influence
2nd recommendation, watch the documentary Miracles out of Nowhere. Should be steaming somewhere
A great story on how they came to be from humble beginnings in Topeka
Some tunes to check out from them:
Lamplight Symphony
Song for America
Crossfire
Glimpse of Home
Icarus I
Icarus II
keep diggin Wilbur!!
The documentary is on RUclips, but you have to buy/rent it
I've been a drummer since this album dropped Phil Ehart is self taught but; practicing his playing would teach you MANY lessons. ...I've listened to them for decades.
They are touring everywhere on a 50th Anniv tour. But they recently did both Leftoverture and POKR tours playing the entire albums. It was incredible. I saw them both . Dont miss out.
Saw them on tour promoting this albulm. Mid 70's, before pink floyd wall by 3-4 years
If you want to listen to something that is off the charts is the song " Time " by the Alan Parsons Project. For me it is a song for the ages. 😉👀🤔
Their drummer Phil Ehart was and still is tops with what he was asked to do…
The Wall doesn't transition in from the prior song.
KANSAS, like most Prog Rock, is head music. You feel it, it's hard to put into words, but some how you get it.
This album is definitely one of if not their best ever. Please finish the rest of it and then listen to the Masque album. It was their 3rd and my introduction to the best prog band from the USA. BTW Steve Walsh is the lead singer on this one. He plays keyboards. Check into a bit of their history before doing more. You will appreciate them much more. Keep up the great reactions!!
I would listen to Steve Walsh sing a bus timetable.
Kansas has another masterpiece album called Audio Visions. If your covering Yes and Kansas, you have to delve into Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull during the same era...1970s of prog rock were the pinnacle.
This is an epic track. Literally. 🎼
I LOVE KANSAS1
That is all, thank you.
Check out Journey From Mariabronn, The Pinnacle, Apercu, and Death of Mother Nature Suite. You'll love those.
I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between
All I am and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries
My spirit would erase
To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimplse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to see
Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me to know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me
I must tear down the wall let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
There is no loss
Well if you went to their concerts............THIS piece if you delve into the lyrics, and the spiritual journey Kerry Livgren went through as he was writing this masterpiece...you would understand. kansaas has aaalot of good albums their older music is great
Magnus opus
The lyrics are about The Coming Kingdom that YESHUAH MESSIAH Came & Preached 📜☄️

I listened to this while I read The Hobbit. I just seemed to fit
Check out Emerson Lake and Palmer- The Endless Enigma part 1- Fugue- The Endless Enigma part 2. You will not be disappointed.
The Wall, Closed Chronicles and The Pinnacle. Top 3 Kansas
The song after "The Wall" is
"What's On My Mind"
It's a good one too❤
