RIP Ray Thomas Moody Blues flutist
Ladies, my vote is for the live performance complete with a full orchestra. You'll see & hear in a moment. It is shocking to me that Justin wrote this masterpiece when he was 19 years old. This band was formed in 1964. You young lady where a sparkle in your parents eyes when these men got together and formed this Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. In other words they have been doing this a long time!! Thank you Ladies!!!!!!
In my Humble opinion The Greatest Band Ever!!
Justin Hayward wrote this when he was 19 and when he was composing the music it was always with a full orchestra in mind. Genius.
Can you imagine being one person, Justin Hayward wrote and composed the full orchestral part at age 17 years old. What talent!
Ladies if you would like to experience something special listen to the album completely from beginning to end preferably with headphones it will change you. One of the most incredible albums ever done.
This song was written for Justin’s GF in 1968 with later married in 1970…. They stayed together til the end. Ultimate original prog rock band. Thanks for both versions.
one cannot be more passionate about music when you hear stuff like this
Ladies
Thanks for clicking my suggestion. I knew that both of you would love it!
In my youth I would turn down the lights in the evening and with headphones go on a journey with the Moodys especially their album ' On the Threshold of a Dream' thanks
So sad now that Ray and Graeme have left us, but their music lives on.
You did the right version to be introduced to the feel of the original song and its mellowed with age....
Thank you for doing this. The live version is great, but the studio version is incredible. I was able to see them in Austin in the way back.
Justin Hayward wrote this masterpiece when he was 19 years old.
The album is about an entire day/life. It is well worth listening to in its entirety.
Hauntingly beautiful I remember the song from the 60's...70s... Wow we had great music 🎶🎶 back then unlike today..which makes you cringe..This is musical art in motion..beyond beautiful...
I bought that album in 1968, a year after it's release, and it's still one of my all-time favorite albums!
I bought it in '67 and it too is still one of my all time favorite albums. I just love to sit back, close my eyes and listen to it, and remember the night I first heard it when I was nearly 20 years old .
@@patticrichton1135 We had the best music, what they produce these days are crap.
I was born a few months before the release of this album but my mother had a copy and played it often - and so I grew up soaking up this magic through my skin. It remains one of my favourite albums of all time.
This is one of THE great songs of the 20th century 👏 😊
Both versions are masterpieces. It still sounds great. I'll never get bored of listening to this song
Oh NO, I LOVE the LIVE VERSION, because we can SEE THEM PERFORM IT LIVE, along with the full symphony!! I am GLAD you are reacting to BOTH! The LIVE Version ALWAYS GIVES ME CHILLS!!! I saw them live around the same time as this one, and the WHOLE concert was absolutely gorgeous, lighting, full orchestra behind them. I bought the album "Days of Future Passed" when it first came out and when I was a student at Kent State University. This entire album and especially "Nights in White Satin" as so many memories for me of listening to it for the first time with about 10 of my college friends, sitting in one of our off campus friends apartment, everyone cross legged on the floor and just listening to this album...I don't know WHY it stays with me, that evening. but it was SUCH an AUDIO experience. I LOVE it. Funny, because NOW I AM a "senior" (76 years old) and WISH I was young again....but NOT young in the present time, that I could GO BACK to 1967 when I was young and a student at Kent. THANK you for reacting to this unbelievably BEAUTIUFUL song.
You are STILL YOUNG, my friend! I may be chronologically younger, but it doesn’t matter. Having these songs STILL bringing happiness to others (YOUNGER others) makes us just as young and relevant!!!! Great music/artists are timeless! Happy younger people can appreciate it ❤
Days of Future Past is meant to be a whole piece. It was one of the first concept albums, in which each song is a part of a complete story. Tuesday Afternoon from this album is also brilliant.
on the record there are NO GAPS between tracks the orchestra played fitting music to embelish and link the tracks together and lead into the next song
@@tezza3733oh man…I NEED that album!!!!
Tuesday afternoon, I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band.............Has to be the best album...Thriller was nothing compared to this.
I don't know who the sound engineer was when they recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, but he walked on water that night. The best live recording I've heard in my life.
Thanks to this song my wife and I ended up having six children. Each one conceived to this song.... The late sixties and seventies were much better times.......😊
The Moody’s are most definitely one of a kind.
No other comes close to their musical artistry, genius & uniqueness.
Listen to them early & often, their sound never grows old...😉
And for something completely different by the Moody's that will get the blood flowing - 'I'm just a singer in a rock n roll band'
This is one of my favorite ROCK groups EVER! I am biased in that I think the Moody Blues do not have any bad music. Their work ranges from good to GREAT!! This version is special. The last section & movement is spell binding! They build it UP to a climax that is almost too much. Ladies I am NOT overstating it. You two will hear & see in a bit. Keep in mind Justin was 18 when he wrote this masterpiece!
Lets face it ladies this was a great time to be growing up!!! At 8:40 something they begin a section that is almost over whelming, almost. I am SO happy you two enjoyed it! It is beautiful!!! Thank you ladies!!!!!!!! It does my old heart good to see the younger generation responding to this music..... We had the BEST cars and the best music!!!!!!
Listening to an album in stereo (preferably with headphones) was a different experience from listening to a song on the radio and especially listening to a concept album of dawn to night. The addition of the poem, written by the drummer and recited by the keyboard player, and added at the end of the last song, was the cherry on top. Glad you chose to appreciate more of "Nights". Nicely done.
There is no “wrong version” of MB songs. It’s just full orchestration adding lush embellishment.
The haunting melody of the intro and the last 2 1/2 minutes of the song, the fairy tale twinkles leading up to the poem and the soaring crescendo at the end are not "musical embellishments", they make the song unique, complete and a masterpiece that has never been matched by anyone, at least not after the turn of the 20th century.
@@smg85051 …my goodness, who knew?
I understand Edward the spirit of what you said about. There's no wrong versions but I noticed most of the time the millennials are checking out live versions. And as wonderful, it was to see, these bands live a lot of us. Couldn't afford to see them live. So the only way we dumb was through the albums. And I must say I wish you seek dis. Appointed when I saw them live because to me. They never sounded as good live as they did in their studio versions. So personally I love closing my eyes and listening to the perfection of what they produced on viwell. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking with it. No disrespect!
@@ericsahagun5344 …no disrespect taken. Many bands benefited from studio editing. I loved the music of Chicago back when, but they were awful at a live Carnegie Hall ‘70’s concert. I fully understand your perspective.
I have seen the Moody Blues in concert several times. They always work with local orchestras to play along with their music. Long Island, NY (where I spent most of my life) it was the Long Island Symphony Orchestra who worked beautifully with the Moodies. Every time they played this song, I would close my eyes and sway to the music. Most of the time they would include "Late Lament" as the finisher for "Nights". Somehow the song would never feel complete without that poem.
My favorite group...what I call 'classical rock' band from the 60's & 70's.
You need to expose her to Bread along with the other songs and groups I've suggested. Songs by Bread include: Baby I'm-A Want You, Guitar Man, Goodbye Girl, It Don't Matter To Me, Everything I Own, If, Aubrey, Diary, Make It With You, Lost Without Your Love, etc.
Different strokes. Bread were a soft rock band.. Moody Blues were prog psych.. Different. But listen to all music.. You can't go wrong
Maybe the other great 50 songs from the Moodies.
My husband saw them three times in the Chicago area (our hometown). The first time in the seventies he saw a stripped down version (no orchestra) and he said although he enjoyed it, it left him a little underwhelmed. In the 90s he saw them just over the border in Merrillville, Indiana with the Northern Indiana Orchestra and he said it was just magical! A few years later he went back to the same venue because he had enjoyed them so much!!
To be in this audience is an experience that is beyond words. Crying again. It takes my breath away. Since this, we have lost the flutist, Ray Thomas, 2018, & drummer Graeme Edge, 2022. Thank you for listening again.
Do which ever u prefer,they never miss🇬🇧👍🇺🇸
Wow! Im impressed. Your analysis is intelligent. Quite a difference from most of the others. You also did your homework finding out about the writer. Good job!
When Ray Thomas retired, they needed a new flautist and so hired Norda Mullen, who toured with the band for the rest of their touring career. While nobody can replace Ray Thomas, Norda did a heart-stoppingly amazing job at succeeding him - she is *SUCH* a talented musician
hi, i love your reaction to the Moddy Blues. a little backgrounder on the song. Justin wrote this song in the late 60s when he was just 19 years. this song is a letter to the girl he loved and eventually became his wife until today. it is really a beautiful song. the original was recorded with an orchestra which Justin requested as this was the first song of a band with an orchestra.
Thank you, ladies, for reacting again to this beautiful song. Both versions have their own special parts. I love both of them very much. I'm so glad you got to see the live version when the band members are older. Like you both agree the song is timeless and will be long after the members have passed on as some already have. I will love this band to my last days as well. Thanks again for doing this.
You really need to listen to the complete album. It starts with a poem that greets the new day, as it finishes with that poem you heard as the day is fading away. And all the songs within the album are celebrations of the day, starting with Dawn, the Morning. Then it takes you thru lunch, and afternoon (another very popular song from this album, Tuesday Afternoon, which is also worth a listen), then on to evening and of course, the Nights.
As a child I used to fall asleep at night listening to this song on my little AM radio by my bed. One of those that always got played late at night. Great memories.
I heard that it was a favourite with the late-night DJs. They were often alone in the studio, and this was so long that they would put this on so they had time to go to the can, make a coffee, grab a bite, whatever. Most songs back then were only two to three minutes.
YESS!!! One my favorite version of this song, not wrong just live and 1st official video were Justin was so handsome and young!!! Thanks!
My favorite album of all time by my favorite group.
Ladies….I spent every night as a teen in NY LISTENING to this very version on the radio (I’m 60 btw)
This song has been in my mind (in the forefront) since then. Any time I hear it and I don’t hear “breathe deep”, I feel cheated! I need the whole song!!!!
The song is part of a concept album covering a day or a life of a person. The ending poem, "Late Lament", is a bookend to the entire album. It refers to the end of a day or a life of a person. It is a companion to the opening poem, both written by the drummer Graeme Edge. The first poem, called "Morning Glory", also mentions the cold hearted orb which is the moon and is the dawn of the day.
Thank you for reacting to both the live and the poem. Nights is truly a masterpiece of music to get lost in. Keep in mind when you listened to the poem, there was still orchestral accompanyment. That was the band playing those instruments, not a full orchestra, which shows how incredibly talented these guys are.
Interesting to see you cover the different versions. Generally, with pop music, the studio version is the best production, and the live version is for fans who have already listened to the studio version hundreds of times, so they often change it up in some way. As others have said, this is a concept album, and well worth the listen all the way through. It's kind of like Vivaldi's Four Seasons, except going through the hours of the day. "Tuesday Afternoon" is another track to highlight. If you're up for more symphonic music from the same period, give a listen to the theme from the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. That film score is from 1966, and the Moody Blues album "Days of Future Passed" is from 1967.
DOS PALABRAS. MARAVILLA INIGUALABLE❤
This was a wonderful reaction, I like all the versions. There is another song they sang at that concert, “Your Wildest Dreams” that is a great song too.
Just discovered you two last night and binged a bit and now you are doing one of my favorites today.
Thank You and more Moody Blues Please
More moody blues coming!
I'm in love with his Gibson SG guitar. Such a beautiful instrument, to look at, to play and to hear.
The album version is the ultimate version, but experiencing it live is something else!! Thanks for the re-do, you are indeed doing it justice in doing so.
This is the wedding song for my wife and I, and I can't help but smile, sway when I hear it. I put the album on every anniversary, and this being the final song, we usually end up dancing in the kitchen. 20 years next year!
If you ever check out the entire album, the opening starts with a poem that makes this a cycle. As a concept album, it's a 'day in the life' - hence Days Of Future Passed. You would be well served to react to the whole thing - then it really puts Nights into perspective.
Great reaction ladies, thanks!
1967....Dammmmmmmm ... i was 2 years old, but i remember my mom listen many time this mindblowing song !!! and many years after that live is much better as original video, right ?
Thx to react about this.
Keep both safe, we salute you from France.
So many great songs on your channel.... The Moody Blues is one of my favorite bands but I believe there is another Bee Gees song that you would enjoy. This song was written by the Bee Gees specifically for Celine Dion and they performed it together live in Las Vegas on their "One Night Only" concert. The title is "Immortality". Celine was the special guest for this concert and the performance of her and the Bee Gees together was magical. The entire concert is amazing and includes all of the greatest hits preformed live. Thanks.
It's not just one song. It's the end of a concept album that describes one day and also one life in one beautiful masterpiece.
Hi ladies, thanks for your great reaction again. Don't stress over the comments. Everyone has their favourite version of classic songs and there is no way to guess which one to choose. The fact you are reacting to it is enough. Music is so emotional to different people in different ways and those differences are what makes people interesting and gives us an insight to their interpretation, which is also great. It's all about musical upbringing and experiences and we learn from each others perspective, which I did in this reaction. I've never heard the live version with the album monologue added to it so that was a new experience for me and I thank you for it. Well done. Lots of love to you both. Pottsy.
Perfectly said!
Thank you so much!
Well done, on your review. I first heard the album Days of Future Pass 52 years ago. Yes, it's timeless. I believe Justin was 19 years old when he wrote the song, and he did it in 1 day.
When the symphony, at the end, enters the Kingdom, that always makes me get the chills.
In this live concert, this song was done at the half-way point. It's not their encore song, as no one would think of standing up while this song was being performed.
The poem was written by Graham Edge (drummer), and the narration is done by Mike Pinder (keyboards and mellotron), who had a great voice, and was also one of the 4 lead singers in the band.
I prefer to see reactions to the original studio versions first, since they're the ones that were first released to and heard by the world. So I thought your initial reaction was fine, although I did sort of miss the full album version. This live version is excellent, too. Thanks for covering them all!
Agree with you Tom. I like both versions but I grew up with the Moodys and the original studio version takes me to a night time drive through the flat lands of Illinois in the early 70s and the lights in the fields gave the song a certain feeling. Moodys forever!!!!
The Moody Blues live is an experience, not just a concert
Wonderful reactions. This one was my favorite. They are more seasoned and have a injected lifetime of passion into this performance.
So glad you ladies did a reaction to both of these versions of the song. It just isn't the same without the long versions of this song. And both long versions have something to offer.
I love the Moodies. Loved tbem si ce i was 18 - eeek, so long ago. Saw them live three times , always amazing
So glad that you guys did all versions and listened to all the great music, thank you.
GREAT REACTION Ladies. you should listen to there long version of , TUESDAY AFTERNOON, it will blow your mind. thank you John from the UK.
The best band ever. Seen them live many times and have the Long Distance Voyager album autographed by them all. Most underrated band.
You guys are great. Fun watching your reactions during these old songs. I was around 10 when these great songs were coming out. Great time to grow up.🤠
Their first commercial hit, that I know of is a song called "Go Now." The band reformed after that and the rest is history!! Total different sound from that first hit!
That was with Denny Laine instead of Justin Hayward.
Bessie Banks did the original. The Moodies found the blues/rhythm-and-blues competition too tough at the height of the British Invasion, so they regrouped and discovered the Mellotron.
We've already said...
I first heard this song while driving through the snowy Appalachian mountains in January with my mom. She had a work conference and I’d just gotten my drivers license. I almost drove us off a mountain trying to do a 3-pt turn.
But my mom had this album and this song came on as we crested the top of the mountain. It was magical.
I was 10 in those days and am now 67 ... an incredible 57 years has passed for me. The musicians then delivered music with meaning that stimulated discussion regardless of commercially viable. Unlike the music of today which is mostly designed to emit emotions and have a good beat to dance to. We certainly have not progressed musically.
In the ending poem, ponder the last lines..."Cold hearted orb that rules the night..." talking about the moon and how it's difficult to see actual colors... "red is gray and yellow white...' and what is he alluding to when he says "but we decide which is right, and which IS an illusion."
The poem is the icing on the cake! Great video!
My personal choice would be the album version but the live version would be spectacular to see it live in person.
I have so much fun watching you and your daughter talk about music. It is so nice to see a family together like you do. God bless. Keep playing those Oldies But Goodies love them
For any group to soud that perfect live is awesome.
I thank you for playing this classic, many happy memories from this song. How about doing a react to a Justin Hayward single. Forever Autumn
I saw this band at the Sandia Amphitheater, when this song started there was lighting on the Sandias, then a harvest moon started rising. perfect timing....
I"m one of them ........this version , and any iconic song , backed by a Philharmonic orchestra , leaves you with ......pure magic ..
Such a beautiful song from an amazing album, by such talented musicians! I am so glad you took the time to experience the different versions. Thank you so much.
This will NEVER get old! EVER!
The live version is truly a masterpiece.
Wow!! You two are hooked on this....LOVE it !!! I've never had the first comment :)
Thanks for picking this song!
That reaction was fantastic. 🌹
Justin Heyward and John Lodge both are on tour this year.
Great reaction, thank you for doing two additional versions of this masterpiece. I appreciate how you read and responded to the comments. I was impressed that you did both versions that were recommended, you are both overachievers! Thanks for your video!
I'm glad you decided to revisit reacting to "Nights In White Satin" with the album version. The version you reacted to previously left out the poem that was read at the end of the song. The poem gave it such a powerful, dramatic , climax to end the song and everyone felt you needed to hear it to get the full effect of the song. Thank you.
I was one of those who pointed out the album version is better, but I would never accuse you of listening to the "wrong" version! In fact, for years I didn't even know the longer version existed!
Oh sorry! I meant that more as a joke. But yes we’re very glad we listened to the other two versions and we wouldn’t have known without all the comments, so thank you ☺️
@@generationgapreacts That's what a community's for! Nothing to forgive! Just discovered your channel a few days ago: great stuff!
This concert took place in 2000, only a few years before Ray Thomas (the flautist) retired. Unfortunately he has since passed away, as has drummer Graeme Edge. Lead singer Justin Hayward has indicated that the band no longer exists, but he himself is still putting out music. He actually just put out a new single, “Living for Love”.
Breathe deep, the gathering gloom, watch light fade from every room..........This was the finale to the song. I saw the Moody Blues in concert. They've performed over 50 years.....This song was the best slow song to dance to.
I was lucky enough to see Justin Hayward when he came to Sydney Australia preforming in Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. I was sitting right up the front and when he took a bow at the end I was clapping and he was only about ten feet away from me up on stage and in the gap of two monitor speakers he looked right at me face to face and said thank you. Something I wasn't expecting and something I will never forget.
Justin Hayward is a musical genius. He wrote this when he was just 19.
Been a fan of the Moody Blues for years. The extended version of "Nights in White Satin", the poem at the end seems to be an almost Mahayana Buddhist take on life. I am reminded of the Buddhist Heart Sutra "...form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form, form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form..."The absolute is the relative, the relative is the absolute. Together, they make up reality...beautiful.
I last saw them at Red Rocks Canyon outside of Denver, they came ready to play and blew is all away. The rock canyon game every note added reverberation that was unlike any thing else I've ever heard. They blew my socks off. I never did find the left one, but I still have the right one mounted on my wall. They were fantastic.
One of the top 5 songs of all time….period.Lucky to hav3 gotten to hear them live 2x.
You girls are wonderful....WE LOVE YOU!!
Thanks for listening and, literally, reacting to the comments section.
There are certain British artists and Groups who MUST be seen live like Peter Frampton, Rod Stewart, The Who, and Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues. 😀
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion.
An obvious reference to the moon and the gloom of night, where heartbreak can be, and often is, intensified.
Just a thought.
To me, the whole album is the best Rock album ever recorded. It is simply amazing.
There is only one album that beats this, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. Nothing else comes close to these two albums.
Good work! This was an excellent decision!! When in doubt....do both!
Thank you guys SO MUCH for doing this; this proves you guys really listen to your viewers.
Thank you! And yes we do. We appreciate all the comments!
The concept you are looking for is emotional impact - this song already has it in spades; the orchestra just adds power to it
The song is from a whole concept album called “Days Of Future Passed”
I've had the pleasure to see them in concert. I fell in love with these guys the moment I first heard them. I think they are brilliant. Please go down the rabbit hole and listen to what they have to offer.
Saw them live at the Royal Festival Hall shortly before i left the UK in 1971 to be discharged from th AF. A friend and I on a lark drove from Norwich UK to London, no tickets. We got to the Festival Hall ticket window and as luck would have it the comcert was sold out but there were two cancelation. Center Seats, 2nd Row dead center. An Angel had our backs that night. This was one of multiple times I saw them while stationed in the UK. The Moody's that night were accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. One if the few bands i ever saw live that sounded like their studio album.
If you haven't heard it, an amazing Moody Blues song (from their pre-prog days) is "Go Now". The singer at that time was Denny Laine, who went on to join Wings with Paul McCartney. Always found it ironic that Denny Laine would join forces with the guy who wrote Penny Lane.
Oxford United v Millwall 1975. On the way past Chiswick (where we saw Actor: Donald Pleasance staying out of his window) and eventually home and we came to split the petrol money when I, casually, mentioned I still had "Go Now" from 1965 and the driver charged me an extra 50 pence as I had the record for 10 years.😀
OK we get it. We get it. I have always thought that the live version is more powerful in part because they are older and bring that to their performance. Thank you for reacting to this. You needed to. Good that you heard the album ending too. Your lives have now been made complete haha. You two are awesome ❤🙏☮
Once we saw the live version, we totally got it! We’re glad we did another video with the 2 other recommended versions
