That was the first rock album I ever bought and their distinctive sound, poetic lyrics and musical complexity made it the perfect album. Magnum Opus after the vocals is a something I never heard before. Reading the titles of the various movements made it even better.

THIS is a song I had heard KANSAS play ONCE, live in concert, in the early 1980s, I think... the funny thing is that what I remember of the concert most was that the keyboardist, at the time, did a friggin HANDSTAND on the organ/keyboard while playing.................. THEY were great. I think it was Kansas opening for STYX, or double billed.

My favorite band by a longshot. Kerry Livgren (lead guitar; long white blonde hair) wrote most of their great prog songs and their hits. No music lessons; can't read or write music - but he grew up listening to his parents' classical music, which he loved, particularly from the Romantic period (Wagner, etc.). This is reflected in his music, changing time signatures, complex riffs, in etc. And his lyrics are about his spiritual journey to find the truth, which he did when he became an evangelical Christian in July 1979. He's an intellect & an incredible musician. After leaving Kansas, he formed the group AD (recommend "Art of the State"), then went on to form Proto-Kaw (recommend "The Wait of Glory"). And he has done solo albums all along the way (recommend "Seeds of Change" - remastered as "Decade 1." It's no wonder Kerry is known as "the Maestro"!

Great reaction. This band is totally underrated. The musicianship is incredible throughout their entire history. This song is a great example of their intense time signature changes and tight playing. I agree with the previous commenter that the Magnum Opus is really a collection of lots of musical ideas, and sometimes that format can lead to disaster, but Kansas connects the ideas so skillfully here that you never lose the groove. Please, try the Closet Chronicles from their album Point of Know Return. Another masterpiece! Great job with your new channel!

Daniel, this album is great from start to finish. This song is the only one with limited lyrics, any of the others would get you thinking. Their first 6 albums are all exceptional and the rest are all pretty good. Miracles out of Nowhere, The Wall, What's on My Mind. Questions of my Childhood and Cheyenne Anthem all worth looking into, even the ones I didn't mention here are good. Earlier stuff like Icarus-Borne on Wings of Steel, Child of Innocence, Mysteries and Mayhem(all from Masque) and Song for America album and Point of Know Return album . Can't go wrong with any of this.

    • @recyclerhopkins

Re-watched your reaction and wanted to add that it might be worthwhile to listen to Carry On Wayward Son for the lyrics alone. This was their first big hit and got so much radio airplay that they gained national exposure and even the masses who didn't know much about music became fans. This song was very popular but it is still really good. After you listen to this you should watch the Rick Beato video What Makes This Song Great on it on youtube. He isolates all the individual instruments and vocals from the mixing board and you'll get a better appreciation of their musicianship and talent. Another song to check out is DOWN THE ROAD, which musically is similar to Magnum Opus in some ways but there are more lyrics to ponder and the instrumental sections are impressive. It's a much shorter piece but packs some punch.

This track was originally called Leftoverture before they decided to name the album that instead (don't know why it couldn't have been used for both, but hey) and was so called because it was simply a collection of bits of music that hadn't made it into other songs, hence it being largely instrumental. Anyway, big fat YES to reacting to the deeper cuts, why react to the same 2 or 3 songs per artist that the other gazillion reaction channels have already done? (actually the answer to that is your reaction would be more interesting than most of theirs, but anyway...) - no shortage of great Kansas songs to find, 3 early ones I'd suggest are Incommudro-Hymn to the Atman, Child of Innocence and Miracles Out Of Nowhere, but they've literally released a new album a fortnight ago (The Absence of Presence) which has some killer stuff on it too - Jets Overhead, Throwing Mountains and Memories Down the Line to name a few worth hearing from that.

and yet, still not even 1000 views. People just don't wanna explore music. They just wanna hear the hits that they've already heard a hundred times. I don't get it. There's thousands of songs that we've never heard. In the last year I've discovered groups and songs that I never heard of, and it's been a great ride. Someone introduced me to Renaissance and Gypsy and I'm just shocked that neither made it big. They're both great bands.

@@Lightmane - Oh, I sure do agree with you! Good Lord, just taking the 60s and 70s, there is so much fantastic music to choose from! It took "us" 2 decades to experience all that music, so I understand how daunting it must be for someone like Daniel.
I discovered Gypsy a little over a year ago, right here on youtube. I don't really know how it happened - might have just been one of those things where something comes up in the youtube feed that in some way relates to what you have watched. A rec came up for Gypsy, and both the name and the album cover were enough to make me click...............and WOW! Their latest incarnation is incredibly good.
They are all classically trained musicians then...and now. With 2 of the original founding members still in the band today.
The new members are younger and equally gifted musicians.
Which has brought a new energy to their fantastic original "Kansas Sound".
Every song on their first 5 albums are stunningly good, legendary. A very original and shamefully underrated classic rock (prog) band.
Although highly influential. A lifelong favorite of mine.

Normally, Kansas' writing duties were shared by Steve Walsh (keyboards and lead vocals) and Kerry Livgren (guitars and keyboards). But when the fourth album came up, Walsh was suffering from writer's block and the entire Leftoverture album was written by Kerry Livgren whose orchestration and arrangement skills are off-the-charts good. I'm a Kansas native and this is still referred to in radio as the 'home-state band'. The original members were all natives of Kansas - mostly around Topeka - and I knew people who knew the musicians when I was back in high school. so I always felt connected to this band, as silly as that sounds. Their first album cover is a mural that is on the 2nd floor rotunda of the state capitol building in Topeka, Kansas.

the spinning around effect you hear in your headphones is a technique called "Arc Paning " It was achieved in the 1970's with Lexicon delays out of phase and crossing the null point paned hard left right. It required a pair of PCM 42's , I used it all the time back then ... so happy you noticed it!

The one thing about rock back in the 70's artists were constantly experimenting with crossing over in to other areas of music. I always thought a lot of Kansas was a sort of classical rock, were the instrumentals told the story that you had to visualize in your mind. Beethoven on acid! There are so many great Kansas songs, really none of them are bad. Dust in the Wind, Point of No Return, Death of Mother Nature Suite, The Wall, Miracles Out of Nowhere, just to name a few. Their songs are generally intricate with deep meaning. Close your eyes and let the guitar, drums, violin, keyboard and synthesizer tickle the brain. Most of all feel it!

  • @Yesquire0
    @Yesquire0 4 года назад +5

My own experience with Kansas began with hearing their radio-friendly singles (Carry on My Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind) back in the '70's. I enjoyed the singles, which I'd classify as a cut above the usual pop fare, but never felt compelled to buy an album. I don't recall FM stations playing any deeper cuts from Kansas back then. I was heavily into Yes and Genesis at the time, and would have delved into an American bunch of proggers, too, but had no idea Kansas was actually a prog band.
Then in 2000, Yes and Kansas toured together. My fellow Yes fans informed me that the pairing was a good one, because Kansas was actually a prog act. So I spent some time listening to the "deep cuts" by Kansas and came away quite impressed by the band's efforts, but elected not to jump on the Kansas fan bandwagon. Kansas does have a rabid fanbase who will love seeing you react to their non-radio stuff.
American prog bands are somewhat of a rarity. Kansas is the groundbreaker in that category, and some of the founding members of Kansas split and formed a band named Proto-Kaw, which has put out some really fine music. Echolyn is another fine American prog band with their own very unique and somewhat dissonant foundational sound. Spock's Beard is a neo-prog band very much worth checking out, too.
I laughed at the concert, overheaing the Kansas fans excitedly talking about how "Kansas blew Yes out of the water" while overhearing Yes fans proclaiming how "Kansas barely belonged on the same stage as Yes". Such is fandom.
From what I've seen of your personal musical taste, you are headed towards prog as your genre of choice. Nothing beats it, and there is tons of epic music out there awaiting your ears and mind. On the downside for a poster to RUclips, there are fewer prog fans extant than pop music fans.

See Kerry Livgren's autobiography " Seeds of Change" for meanings of Kansas songs. This song was made of bits and pieces of songs each member had. Essentially, a jam session, hence few lyrics.
The various subparts " Father Padilla, etc" are names of the different parts. They were also being pretentiously clever, a characteristic of prog rock at that time

I am a HUGE Kansas fan, having seen them many times throughout the 70s. There is no better band in the world, live or studio. I highly recommend that you get all their albums from the 70s: Kansas, Song for America (!), Masque, Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Two for the Show (double live), Monolith, & AudioVisions. I promise you, you won't be disappointed. The lead guitarist, pianist, and synth player, Kerry Livgren, also wrote all of the progressive songs that Kansas did. It's no wonder that he is known as "the Maestro." I recommend you react to Song for America (the song), Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel, The Pinnacle, Hopelessly Human, The Wall, Miracles out of Nowhere, Hopelessly Human, and Hold On. A friend of mine, guitarist, commented on first hearing this song that it sounds like a group of music majors were given an assignment to write and perform a prog rock piece, and then stuffed it full of every prog rock concept known to man. Makes sense given the song is really a patchwork of musical ideas they couldn't find homes for. It does hit almost every prog rock trope. Still one of my favorites off the album, because it is really well done.

I first got heavily into this band in 1976. One of the things I loved about this track was not only it's complexity but the choice of harmonic elements in spots. If you study late 20th century music or as is referred to often as the Impressionistic period, you hear these types of harmonies. The music hadn't gone to the 12 tone stuff that came later, but they had clearly started pushing past the typical classically derived chord voicing. Music by Ravel and Debussy use progressions like this. Now Kansas barely develops these ideas during this 8 minute piece, yet they are there in spots. It is almost ashamed they were not given 15 minutes to work with. They were the predecessors along with bands like Rush to the more modern prog metal we love today. The European progressive music was complex and had virtuoso players and also used lots of various time signatures but often lacked any heaviness. Kansas 's players were good, not necessarily virtuoso level players. But as an ensemble they pulled off some pretty amazing musical feats.

Underrated band. From Point of Know Return - "The Spider" is only 2:05. From Song for America "Lonely Street", "The Devil Game", and my favorite driving song "Down the Road" - and from Masque - the "one piece" - "Mysteries and Mayhem" plus "The Pinnacle" which were to be one track - it's 15 plus minutes. Check out "Summer" (2016); this reminds me of the original line-up.

Kansas suggestions: Journey from Mariabronn, Song for America, Lamplight Symphony, Icarus-Borne on Wings of Steel, The Pinnacle, The Wall, Miracles out of Nowhere, Hopelessly Human, Relentless, Hold On, Curtain of Iron, Distant Vision, Icarus II. You won't be disappointed by any of these incredible Kansas songs. Kerry Livgren composed all the progressive works that are listed above. And he is a master composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and multiinstrumentalist. He plays lead guitar, piano, synth, mellotron, and other instruments. No wonder he is known as the Maestro.
Steve Walsh is the primary vocalist, and considered to be one of the best in the biz. Please react to as many of these as you can, and you will become a "wheathead" too!

The band thought this album was their last chance and the song was originally named “Leftoverture” but their label wanted that to be the album name so they had to rename the song. It is literally leftover pieces of discarded parts removed from other songs while they were rehearsing before recording this album. They figured if it was the last song ever recorded by them and the last song on the last record they did they’d go out with a bang.
Luckily it wasn’t the same end and their newest album released this summer maybe their greatest album yet.
My song recommendation is “Journey from Mariabronn” from their first album and “Incumdro: Hymn to the Atman” from their second album which is a little over 14 minutes long.

I'm in my late 50's now, and I've been enjoying Kansas since I was your age. This is timeless music. I classify it less as "classic rock" and more as (my own term) "CLASSICAL Rock".
I know you've mentioned your faith in the few vids of yours I've seen (so far :-) ), and though I would interject here that the Leftoverture album was written mostly by the guitarist, Kerry Livgren. He was a musical genius, and was also at the brink of, or just over the brink, of becoming a believer, when this album was written, after his long search for meaning in his life. That should add a dimension to your understanding of where this music was coming from, especially "Carry On Wayward Son", "The Wall", and "What's On My Mind". I recommend very highly reviewing EVERY cut on that album. It is a musical masterpiece. It could be the one album I could be stranded on a deserted island with.
I also recommend looking into some of Livgren's post-Kansas solo work, and with his band called "A.D.". Songs that come to mind are "Waiting for Ground Zero" "Mask of the Great Deceiver" (Ronnie Jame Dio doing the lead vocal...stellar), and "Whiskey Seed". These were mostly considered Christian albums in the day, but were every bit as well-though-out as the Kansas material. As a young believer, I tried to keep myself balanced between the rock of the day, and what we called Contemporary Christian Music, Christian Rock, or Jesus Rock. Hey why not stay lifted up AND enjoy some rock-n-roll genre at the same time? :-)
PS, I also grew up on Chicago (yep I was a band kid), and Led Zeppelin. AWESOME to find young minds that truly appreciate the virtuosity and skill that went into the music of MY youth. Thanks again, little brother!

If you want to hear where they got the inspiration for the initial Opus melody, listen to "Fly on a windshield" by Genesis off of "The Lamb Lies down on Broadway" album. That album has plenty of lyrics for you to digest, and analyze from now until the rest of the year.
Otherwise, give a listen to "Song for America" by Kansas and "Firth of Fifth" by Genesis. You won't be disappointed by the music or lyrics from both. Peace

Kansas' first 4 albums are awesome. Lots to choose from "Death of Mother Nature Suite" I would put up against any metal band out there. It is a continuation of "Aperçu" that proceed that song on the album. "Mysteries & Mayhem" is worth listening to also.

I love how I keep coming across these months later. Great song. Have you tried "Journey From Mariabronn" off their first album? Also "Apercu." And their cover of JJ Cale's "Bringing It Back From Mexico" is brilliant.
Also, please try DIXIE DREGS "Cruise Control" from the "Freefall" album and see if you don't get that spinning sensation again.
