Johnny Hartman's Lush life is clearly the definitive version of this song.
Not Billy Eckstine's version?
Don’t be so fucking stupid!
Sarah Vaughan's is the definitive version
The Incomparable Heavenly Voice of J.H.
There'll never be another!!!
goddamn! his stance and delivery! so poised and causal. oh and his voice is like being wrapped in a huge warm fluffy blanket but that goes without saying, because it's johnny hartman.
what magnificent phrasing, what a feel for this complex song ... breathtaking
Someone once said to truly understand Sinatra's artistry you have to look at his complete body of work, including his films. To do the same for Johnny, one only needs to listen to the 1st 10 seconds of any song. Personally, his music cannot be explained or understood , but only felt...way down in that part of you that rages with love, life and loss
GREAT! Too bad the video is mostly lost, but at least we have the music all the way through.
What an artist - thanks for sharing.
Mesmerizing any time I hear him. Stops me dead in my tracks.
Holy cow! I love him, but those 4 people that clicked the thumbs down have no clue! Pure musicallity!
Easy to see why he was Ella's favorite singer. What a voice!
Nothing to add. This video speaks by itself.
Thank you
What execution !
singing with arms folded!
La sua voce porta dentro di se la storia di un popolo che grazie alla sua voglia di esistere ha fatto enormi sacrifici aiutato dalla fede.
t amo jhonny
His voice just became better with age.
Incredible voice! Thanks for posting.
Have the recording. J Hartman amazing. Also comping by Tony Monte.
Wow, the piano is devastating on this recording
Oh my god! He is my soul.
Thanx so much for posting.
Sinatra loved Johnny.
of course Johnnys album with Coltrane...is a landmark achievement....containing this billy Strayhorn...classic.....written about love lost..and finding diversions in the same old sad places....when Billy was still in his teens!.....read the lyrics to understand what i mean......
...i think it interesting Strayhorn ..being a gay man... used the term "gay places"...as he may certainly be referring to his sexuality here.....though the song was written in the early 30's....and the term gay...not really accepted till the middle 50's...as slang for homosexual
His tone is so pretty.
Love!
É o Messias da música ,enfim, enviado por Deus , para maravilhar os ungidos que haveriam de deliciar-se com a sua voz.
Thanks for posting this, I hadn't heard it. Hartmann was a master. By the by, Strayhorn was only 19 when he wrote this, seems impossible.
not quite 19 he was 16
@@bobbywax Billy Strayhorn composed the song between 1933-1936, when he was 18-21.
Sinatra attempted this song and did a fine job...as the surviving bootleg shows...i hope you guys have heard it....but he decided not to go into it....at the time and sadly...left it out for good...like he did to so many great songs....why..no one will ever know...of course you cant record them all..but the junk he was recording..after 62...with a few exceptions...could have been songs like Lush Life....
Who was the bassist?
My notes say: Tony Monte (p), Bob Cunningham (b), Lou Grassi (d), Johnny Hartman (v)
That fucking bass with that 1980s pick-up messed up something that was going beautifully otherwise!
Ok. Since YOU say so, I’ll chill... Here goes: The bass wasn’t too loud and twangy at all. And everything is sunshine and rainbows. And everyone should get a trophy.
