In my lifetime ( I am near 84) I will never be able to choose a number one singer from my three top male singers... Johhny Hartman, Billy Eckstein & Arthur Prysock.... All three are perfection.. I guess that is a good problem for me to have.

@roberthiller3321 DON T NEGLECT Earl Coleman, as the world and rec biz did. Just 6 lps, 5 actually, in 35 yrs though sang w Bird. No live footage on Yt - was VERY lucky to see @ Northsea 87. Has an even deeper bass baritone than JH. A. Prysock s career produced some 25 lps but most of them are commercial crap or disco, besides the Verve 1 with Basie. Also one later one, early 80s can t recall rite now, though I have it. A rockin good way or sth.
Extine s whiny shimmerings I nevuhh cared 2 much, Torme, Bennett, LJS similarly; Joe W I even interviewed. Herb Jeffries .."Poinciana" ... class .
Go to ch called GREGG AKKERMAN, is the biographer of JH. rare stuff there. HERB LANCE :The comeback - is a good'un on Chess; JIMMY GRISSOM similarly. Nic3 talkin 🇫🇮

Each single track of JH is so precious. He sung always, everywhere and every time in an absolute perfect way...With Mark Murphy he has been the greatest balladeer of all times. Mark was a total singer, while Johnny only a crooner. This is the reason why Mark has been the TOTAL and definitive jazz singer. He told me he liked Johnny a lot, an inspiration to him. The first and the second. Forever.

I've always loved both singers, but I've never subscribed to the notion (or was concerned ) that one is better than the other. They approached music very differently, but they had in common their excellence. I heard both of them at every opportunity, and had the honor of mixing the New Year's Eve 1980-81 feed to NPR of Johnny's performance with Billy Taylor in the rhythm section. The only reason I own more of Mark's recordings is that he had more opportunities to record.

"Johnny was only a crooner"- NONSENSE! He was a 'true' jazz singer, but at the end of his career and given the times, a few of his songs became a bit cheesy.

@@jimbrown1559 EARL COLEMAN ....the most underrecorded 1 evvuhhhh, 6 actually 5, full lps in 35 yrs though sang w Bird onboard ....wayeeback. Saw @ Northsea 87 = LUCKY me. NO LIVE FOOTAGE ON THE FORUM !!! Scandal. Listen his swan song lp on Stash STAR DUST. Great mix.

@@oldbeatpete ACC TO CARMEN, to be a jazz singer, one is required TO IMPROVISE w head arrs. So just Bet-Car, Anita, E.Jeff and few others are jazz singers. Kinda narrow but true in a strict sense. Carmen could be nasty and bullyish despite having excellent quest in her/his soul 4 perfection, as all true searchers should ideally possess. "Poiciana ..."

@@sulevisydanmaa9981 But there are many ways to improvise. Lewis Porter recently posted extensively about how Billie crafted her arrangements, citing multiple takes and multiple recordings over years. And this was while she was young, recording those classic sessions with Teddy, ,Prez, and the Basie and Ellington guys, depending on who was in town that day.
