This was from the Tonight show when Sammy Davis was a guest host, it may have been when Carson was getting ready to take over the show and they had a series of guest hosts, it was around spring 1966, and I saw it live when it first was broadcasted. I had never heard of Hartman and when I saw this I immediately ran out to buy his album. Just a great singer, totally underappreciated! A combination Billy Eckstein and Arthur Prysock but better than both!
His album with John Coltrane should be required listening for every human being - easily one of the greatest albums of all time; if you've never heard it get it - includes this classic, and Lush Life - I've played his stuff a thousand times, and I never get tired of it...
I totally agree. That album with Coltrane is one of my favorite albums of all time. Desert Island, required listening for the world. Maybe we’d have world peace after that.
Thanks God Clint Eastwood played many of his songs on The Bridged 9f Madison County. What a voice! At that time I didn't speak English but I felt what he was singing. One of the best.
Hartman has my heart forever. No other man sang these standards with as much unpretentious ardor and grace. He renovates a ballad, delivering with an unmatched masculine tenderness, wrapping his marvelous voice around the lyrics and releasing them with an intimacy of intense heat that never scorches but only soothes. This performance exemplifies his mastery of the idiom and the time-defying integrity of his art.
What a voice. Most people never heard of Johnny Hartman but he was one one of the most smooth and beautiful male voices that was up there with all the greatest.
Undeservedly underrepresented...Johnny was all class and spot on elegant in every way. His phrasing is on a par with Nat Cole and Sinatra. Also resplendent in tux and understated attitude. So long Mr. Hartman...Just dropped by to say hello.
What a wonderful vocalist! Never really got his due. His voice is pure magic. Almost doesn't sound real. Folk just ain't supposed to sing like that. And what about Sammy Davis on the Vibes!! Real talent! No auto tune, just pure beautiful talent. If you didn't know what magic was before, you know now!
Sammy Davis Jr. was most talented entertainer there ever was before Michael Jackson. I was 16 when he came back to Buffalo for a solo concert, and I was crying like a baby, just from the overwhelming presence of Sammy, singing his heart out not 10 feet from me. Hartman makes your heart hurt when he sings, and he was a Mega Hunk to boot!
That's absolutely true. He tapped with his brother and family and was discovered by the the Nicholas Brothers as a group, but Sam was Sam and he couldn't help himself. A true entertainer. See him later in life with them and Gregory Heines; he always reflects the old ages of tap in step. He'd lived a beautiful life and stood against it all. He had Frank fucking Sinatra in his corner against all comers and married a white woman before it was cool. But Johnny's got a voice that can melt gold and throw the world to the wind. Watch Clint Eastwood stand in from of Merle Streep in the rain and listen to that sound and tell me another word.
One of these days Clint Eastwood will no longer be with us. When we talk about him, I hope he will be remembered not just for the acting and directing but also for his love of Jazz. Why bring up Clint? Bridges of Madison County - that soundtrack used songs from Johnny Hartman and brought him to the attention of many people who never knew the richness of that voice.
WASTEWOOD ripped off Hartman s estate rightholders mercilessly, acc to JH biographer GREGG AKKERMAN - who has a ch of his own full of rare JH material. Dig up, buy the book. The person u adore ain t no angel, though, a jazz buff - yes, see The Bird and Monk film + his debut direction from 1971. Life is very unscrupulous in gen. The golden rule has looong been discarded in entertainment biz-buzzzz ...
To Joe Garcia -- you obviously do NOT know that Frank Sinatra was the one who gave Sammy Davis Jr. a chance and notoriety in the music business -- AND set him up in his home in very white Beverly Hills! -- Sinatra was anything BUT racist! Never was. I love Johnny Hartman's voice, which was a little bit lower than the usual baritone -- just beautiful!
I must have 3000 Jazz records oh, and not that it matters but I'm a musician myself and I would have to say that if I had to do a desert island mix I would have to bring Coltrane and Hartman with me! There ain't nobody in the world that sings lush Life like he can... NAMASTE 🛐🛐🛐🛐🙏💫
So beautiful, enthralling... such creative, expressive, and "artistic" phrasing... He takes a song places where no one else ever goes, and he brings the lucky listener along with him...I was moved to tears by this performance and I couldn't tell you why...
I only found out about Johnny Hartman a few days ago when I opened a random mp3 on my computer that my brother had downloaded. He's now my favourite singer.
I loved Johnny Hartman since I was a teenager. I met him when his appearance at a hotel in Miami in 1980 was cancelled because there was a fire in the club the day of his appearance. He came down to give me his autograph. What a lovely man and what a great talent.
Sammy was the MAN! The sixties were so cool. And Johnny Hartman - I think I have everything he ever recorded - that butterscotch baritone voice. Man, I'ma go and mix me a martini, put on my velvet slippers, and crank him up on the old Marantz.
What a great performance by one of my very favorite singers of one of Larry Hart's most haunting lyrics. Up until now, I've always thought that Bill Henderson's recording was the definitive one; this performance is causing me to reconsider! According to Johnny's biographer, this show was taped Feb 13, 1966, and broadcast three weeks later. Hank Jones is the pianist and Milt Hinton is on bass.
while commenting on another post,I was reminded of Johnny. I had almost forgotten how great he was. As another singer once said,"It's All Coming Back To Me Now" I won't forget again !
Thank you for posting this!!
Sammy & Johnny forever! It was once said with regard to Sammy That never has so much come out of something so small for so long! Awards perhaps Oscars. Mr. Hartman well he is just Something Else!
So special to see Sammy and Johnny...Mr. Hartman, a gentle genius...so touched by his tones, his performance plus all the lovely comments fans have left here. Blessings to all from your friends at FOREVER 5th DIMENSION.
Doesn't get cooler or more beautifully smoother than these guys. What a national treasure Mr. Davis & Mr. Hartman were. Missing them terribly today. Bless you for posting this. Music that hits the heart & soul like this NEVER goes out of style.
I am ashamed to say I had not heard of Johnny Hartman before finding this. His voice is just fabulous and I will be trying to find his album with John Coltrane to buy very soon
@juvserr I agree.....I have been into Coltrane since the late 60's when I heard them at my friends grandmother's house...and I've never been the same about music....they introduced me to the classics.
Was there anything Sammy Davis Jr. couldn't do or play? What a great introduction to this video! And Johnny Hartman's voice and performance - a real gem! Thanks for posting.
Btw, he is the ONLY person that Coltrane allowed to sing on one of his records. Johnny recorded mainly overseas, primarily in Canada & Australia. If you want to find one of his best records, get your hands on I Just Stopped By To Say Hello.
@arneal Amen! Preach on! That album is on of my Top 10 if stuck on a deserted island. Powerful and beautiful that album is. Truly a beautiful shot from the hearts of two HUGELY talented musicians. We need more music like this today. Ahout out to Sammy Davis Jr as well. Is there anything that guy can't do? What a amazing talented man he was. Missing them all terribly tonight. Rock on guys! Job well done.
Derr Johnston Mr. Hartman was notoriously lazy about promoting himself (so I've been told) and not being a pop singer , didn't get radio play. He really should have been much better known.
Holy cow, I knew Sammy was a multi-talent, but I had NO IDEA he could play vibes as well. Insane. That aside, I've always loved Johnny Hartman, but I'd never seen footage of him, so thanks for this.

So many are missing out on Mr. Hartman’s unmatched artistry, he was phenomenal.
His album with John Coltrane should be required listening for every human being - easily one of the greatest albums of all time; if you've never heard it get it - includes this classic, and Lush Life - I've played his stuff a thousand times, and I never get tired of it...

One of the great singers....so sad he did not get the recognition he deserved during his life...
Really?so sad.
Hartman has my heart forever. No other man sang these standards with as much unpretentious ardor and grace. What a great assessment!🎩🦚😎😇🎤🎹🎼🎶💜💝💖💙🌞🔥
If you said this thirteen years ago, I can't imagine what your musical analysis is like now. Happy holidays 💫💕
Just like from my mouth ...buy the GREG AKKERMAN bio, has a ch
Well said. I didn't hear him till 1995. When I heard him, I knew it. A woman grabbed my hand as we watched two people fall in love.
You make me glad. ❤
I'm praying you're still around.
You surely got great tastes.
What a voice. Most people never heard of Johnny Hartman but he was one one of the most smooth and beautiful male voices that was up there with all the greatest.

I cry every time I watch this performance by the majestic Johnny Hartman. Check out his work with John Coltrane ASAP
Noone can make me melt like Johnny Hartman, I worship his greatness!

Johnny Hartman...what a voice!!!!
Yep if I had to choose 5 albums to listen to on a desert island, Johnny Hartmann would definitely be one. Right on, Sammy Davis Jr.
To Joe Garcia -- you obviously do NOT know that Frank Sinatra was the one who gave Sammy Davis Jr. a chance and notoriety in the music business -- AND set him up in his home in very white Beverly Hills! -- Sinatra was anything BUT racist! Hartman and Coltrane-What An Album-He's One Smooth Dude~

NAMASTE 🛐🛐🛐🛐🙏💫
Golly, I wish some of us could keep our platforms tucked firmly in our back pockets and just listen to a wonderful singer.
thanks,
Tom
So beautiful, enthralling... such creative, expressive, and "artistic" phrasing... He takes a song places where no one else ever goes, and he brings the lucky listener along with him...I was moved to tears by this performance and I couldn't tell you why...
One of the great ballad singers of all time. That voice is a gift from ... wherever; and Johnny knew how to use that gift.
It is a privilege to hear this.
I only found out about Johnny Hartman a few days ago when I opened a random mp3 on my computer that my brother had downloaded. He's now my favourite singer.
A great voice and a singer's singer. Ella, Sammy, and Sarah praised his talent! Unfortunatley, he never got the recognition he should have!
An exquisite voice.
My heart breaks listening to him sing this song.
I loved Johnny Hartman since I was a teenager. I met him when his appearance at a hotel in Miami in 1980 was cancelled because there was a fire in the club the day of his appearance. He came down to give me his autograph. What a lovely man and what a great talent.
Damn, Sammy never ceases to amaze me! Johnny too.
The master of vocal singing
Sammy was the MAN! The sixties were so cool. And Johnny Hartman - I think I have everything he ever recorded - that butterscotch baritone voice. Man, I'ma go and mix me a martini, put on my velvet slippers, and crank him up on the old Marantz.
My favorite Rodgers & Hart tune, sung by my very favorite singer. Nothing better.
Such class, and talent
Sammy was All That!!!
The Everything Man!!!
Unparalleled!!!
Amazing voice

Certainly one of the top ballad singers of all time
Love love me some Sammy!💗💗💗
We aren't gonna talk about Sammy Davis on the vibes?
Hartman is pure class and the fact that he was not big show-biz star makes him even more interesting in my eyes.
Nancy Wilson nails this to the boards.

Sammy was SOOOOOOO talented! Unreal.
