And then Rosemary showed up and showed all the female singers that had been on the Tonight Show, what singers are supposed to do, but most don't. A class act!
Can you even fathom any late night prime time show today devoting 4:41 to a ballad with full big band arrangement (not cutting the instrumental section short) , augmented by a pair of French Horns. A singer and artist for the ages.
I can never see or hear Rosemary without thinking about my father. My late partner, my brother, and my sister-in-law and I took my parents to Symphony Hall in Boston to hear Rosemary sing. My father had idolized her for close to fifty years. This was on January 27th, 1995, and it was the last time I saw my father. 19 days, on February 15th, he had a fatal heart attack. But it's always been lovely to remember him that night at Symphony Hall, his eyes glistening with tears as he applauded an idol of his youth.
This must have been a seismic event on the Tonight Show. I couldn't tell if it was Doc Severinsen or Tommy Newsome conducting. But wow, they really showed up for Rosemary. Very powerful. Johnny must have been in tears, with the entire audience.
Her brother, Nick, said when he visited her in the hospital a day and a half before she died, she sang this to him.. it was the last song she ever sang.
I get so sentimental whenever I hear this beautiful song. My birthday is at the end of October. Somehow Johnny Mercer's lyrics remind me of my younger years as well as the ones (hopefully) still ahead. Rosemary did an ace job here.
I'm also late October, and the love of my life now nearly 20 years, is early November, we're both in our early 60s - can you imagine what this song - and rendition- does to me?!
Great song. I'm partial to the original Manilow performance, but she brings such class and dignity to this one that it stands beautifully with the original. Super rendition.
I prefer Barry's version as well, I am SHOCKED he only used these lyrics of all those given to him by Mercer's widow for the 2:00 AM Paradise Cafe album.
SHE LOOKS SO SO BEAUTIFUL. . What a classy lady and a huge talent. She’s lived a lot of her songs, no question. God bless her. Rest in peace 🌹AMERICA. JO-ANN. 4/4/2023
That is the same outfit she wore when I saw her at the Boetcher Concert Hall in Denver with the Colorado Symphony. She stepped out on stage and for an hour or so she had a thousand people in the palm of her hand. How damn lucky was I to be one of them.
No need to scold me. I recognized her brilliant voice and rendition. Was only sharing that coupling with Autumn Leaves was an enrichment. No deminshment of Rosemary's voice, talent or version. I love Rosemary's version which is why I come back and listen to often.
I play this nearly every day and I get so emotional and tear up….she is my all time favorite female artist..so miss you Rosie and tho all your vocals the tops….this is one of your best….ethereal..

I had no idea she sang this! Beautiful! Julie Budd also recorded this in a classic string section lush recording! I'd love to hear Linda Eder, Anne Murray, and Bab's record this beautiful song!
Yeah...that's the thing about older performers (especially the great ones)--they have more life experience, and it comes out in their music. Performers who are good to great in their youth get even better as they continue in their work. That's what being 'seasoned' is all about: going through many seasons, and growing from it. And the song is perfect for that: it's a song that carries more weight about remembrance when you have even more to remember.
We don't have classy singers because the singers of Rosie's Era had respect for themselves and their audiences they dressed in evening clothes to entertain and audience dressed also to give respect to performers thats why❤❤❤
A latecomer to loving Rosemary's wonderful song portfoli, I saw her live in the late 90s. We got last minute tickets & the Ohio Theatre box office had just released several rows of promo seats. Blessed to sit front row center, she was so graciousi & warm.; it felt so intimate despite the large venue. I'll never forget it, or her.
Thank you so much for posting this! I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face....just LOVE Rosemary (and the song) I've loved her ever since I was 8 years old and watched "White Christmas" for the first time...and I'm 52 now...Still listen to Rosemary every day...a most LOVELY lady!
Thank you for sharing. I have loved music like this since I was a little girl, too. Now, I am an adult, and still love listening to and singing these beautiful songs.
@@florairvan8305 You're so right...and for me that's what makes Rosemary so special, for me there's no other singer that has the power or the skill to bring a song right to all of us in the magical way she does.❤
Always a pleasure to see an awesome singer, (Ms Clooney was one of the best contraltos ever to sing) singing an gorgeous song, backed by the "take no prisoners" Tonight Show Band. Thank goodness Ed Shaunessey kept his name on his drums, so this orchestra is always easy to verify!
Remembering the great great songwriter Johnny Mercer today on what is the 45th anniversary of his death. What a great lyricist you were Mr. Mercer! You never never wrote a bad song.
Such a beautiful song!! Sung by a beautiful talented vocalist, the legendary, Rosemary Clooney. The accompanying music( the orchestra, is breathtaking)Now this ladies and gentlemen, is what I consider.....MUSIC!!( just my humble opinion)This is whats missing from The Grammy Awards of today.I thank God that I grew up in the 60' s, in a household where there were different genre' s of music.Rest in paradise, Ms.Clooney.Peace , Love and Blessings, to all.🎶🎼🎵🎤

It's hard to believe that this performance occurred on a nightly TV show. The band is unbelievable; we will never see it's like on a regular TV show again, of course Johnny Carson brought in at least half of NBC's income.
I thought her voice was “prettier” in the 50s, BUT she communicated so much more with her mature, lived voice of the 80s. My ears liked the 50s. My heart loves the 80 and 90s Rosemary.
🌹🤗#RosemaryClooney ~ a favorite from the first moment I heard a Note ~ I then began to follow her Film Career. 👏💯Best pianist ~ I’m thinking. … What🌹 her sparkling attire? 🌹💯💫👈
She was such a wonderful singer. She had a great life. Sadly, in her last years she got over 300 pounds. She smoked cigarettes and died of lung cancer in 2002 at 74.
@@kimmalizzy Being a smoker, I'm surprised her voice held up as long as it did. A lot of them start sounding froggy as they grow older. She made it to 74, that's great considering her condition. Mamma Cass Elliot was also 300 and smoked and she only lived to be 33, however she was obese. her whole life. But Rosemary sure was a fine singer, one of my all time favorites. I love her.
For those of you wonderful folks who love Rosemary, look here on RUclips for her version of "I Remember You" with Ron & Nancy Reagan in the front row. . It's marvelous
Birthday Wishes to one of the best girl singers of the 20th Century. I love this song! I first heard Nancy Wilson sing it and she does a wonderful job, but I have to say as much as I love Nancy Wilson, Rosemary sings it better. The song just fits her voice.
And then Rosemary showed up and showed all the female singers that had been on the Tonight Show, what singers are supposed to do, but most don't. A class act!
I have to agree with you 100%
So lovely! 🍂🤎🍂
So well-put, mate. She's slways been fantastic.

Rosie Clooney so underrated she was a master storyteller songstress brilliant singer ❤❤❤
I thought that must be the Tonight Show when a camera panned to the bandstand...looked so familiar.

And one of Manilow’s best. Wow! Hearing Rosie Clooney do this 😢
Sublime song by Johnny Mercer and Barry Manilow. Sung by a master.

Stunning. A real singer with a real band. Those were the days.
Boy, Amen.
Rosemary understood life and it shows--melancholy and mesmerizing.
So grateful to have met her briefly.
This must have been a seismic event on the Tonight Show. I couldn't tell if it was Doc Severinsen or Tommy Newsome conducting. But wow, they really showed up for Rosemary. Very powerful. Johnny must have been in tears, with the entire audience.
Wow. God bless. Rest in peace. I can tell she has lived these words. Sad. Class act. America. 🙏
Clooney was one of the best orchestral singers and interpreter of songs. When she sang a song, you felt it.
John Oddo, the man at the piano. Rosemary's music director, arranger, and pianist for nearly two decades. John Oddo, rest in peace.
Thank you for posting this- I wondered who the pianist was; he was very gifted, played beautifully, gorgeous arrangement, too. ❤️
Thank you. 🙏🏻
One of Manilow’s best works
I so agree. Beautiful song.
Her brother, Nick, said when he visited her in the hospital a day and a half before she died, she sang this to him.. it was the last song she ever sang.
Today is June 29th, 2023. She passed 21 years ago today.
What a beautiful and moving song. Her rendition is particularly touching. And live!
I get so sentimental whenever I hear this beautiful song. My birthday is at the end of October. Somehow Johnny Mercer's lyrics remind me of my younger years as well as the ones (hopefully) still ahead.
Rosemary did an ace job here.
Mine is at the end of October too. This song carries a lot of memories for me.
Barry Manilow wrote it and Rosie sings it perfectly.

Simply the best girl singer ever singing a gorgeous song backed by great musicians. Heavenly.

The singer, the song AND the band!!!!
How can we get the music??
I absolutely love this song. Had the opportunity to see her in Philly a few years before she left us. Such a talent.
Damn, there wasn’t anything she couldn’t own. Masterful.
That's because she didn't get in front of the song; she just served it up in the most delicious way each individual song could be served.
This woman is absolutely haunting...so pure. How I wish she and Barbara Cook would have performed a duet...
She was the GREATEST HER INTERPRETATIONS OF SONGS AMAZING
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I can’t think about her too much singing this or I’ll cry. ❤
I've always liked her what a wonderful woman
in her memory and in the memory of all the past October's that I have loved, lost and remember. I end each October with Rosie and this song.
So beautifully and eloquently stated. I thought I was the only person who did this, as well.
Listen to Nancy LaMott rendition coupled with the Autumn Leaves. Magnificent!

BEAUTIFUL, and perfectly executed by Miss Clooney… but so sad!😢
