Everybody raise a toast to one of the greatest jazz trumpets on what would have been his 80th birthday! Happy Birthday Lee Morgan! Man you were good!!!!!!!!
Thats an interesting looking Cornet. Ok after some research it looks like a (long/american model) less bends in the tubing unlike the British style i have which has a shepherds crook bell.
The Prince of Blue Note. His signature groove on full display with a stellar line up holding the back drop. Before the demons took over, and after his comeuppance with Blakey. Rest in peace. I have to believe you're somewhere on the other shore, cooking it up one more time. 🎺
Lee Morgan is a Blue Note iconic 💙 trumpet 🎺 player ▶️ and a recording artist. Good guy and smart young man. The documentary called "I Called Him Morgan". Rest in peace.
Que maravilha de som! Imagina isso ao vivo, infelizmente hoje as pessoas perderam o costume de assistir um vídeo desse inteiro, não sabe o quê perdem, nostálgica. Só quem curte sabe ! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿☻☻🌹❤
I see you are just as much a fan as I am! There were many greats before him, but Lee Morgan is my all time favorite jazz trumpeter. A true jazz master!
dreaded sage Okay, now I understand, thanks. I thought the instrument was broken or something haha. But yes, cornets play differently. I think it’s harder to play high and fast, both of which Lee Morgan does. But that boy was so good, he could have played a plastic trumpet and be on fire!
What a pleasure! Lee's innovative, & exciting story telling is pure magic. He always generates enormous power, drama and coolness with his phrasing. What a great talent!
Yes, your are right! Lee was a first class artist who tremendous work lives on in these wonderful live performances. Rest In Peace, Lee! Thanks for the memories.
I did not go in with any expectations. Overall I thought it was a good doc on a person I knew nothing about. The music of course was great and the movie is definitely worth catching on DVD.
You have to wonder if a camera was down or there were blocking issues of some sort. Can't fathom why there are no close-ups of Peterson, particularly as he was trading fours with Morgan.
Lee always played with every ounce of fire and spirit he had in his being but as a trumpeter following in his footsteps, I can tell he's fighting with that Olds Ambassador cornet he's playing on this video. Having a heroin habit is really expensive and that's probably the reason he's playing a student cornet instead of the beautiful French Besson trumpet he was usually performing on during this period (which was probably sitting in the pawn shop, lol). This might have been during his first hiatus from Blakey's band, I know he never would have dared bringing that stuffy cornet on the stage with Bu! Buhaina would've blown his ass off the stage after one song (you had to on the very TOP of your game if you were gonna blow a trumpet on Bu's bandstand)! The Olds Ambassador trumpet was a great horn but IMHO their cornets were total dogs, the couple I've tried that students of mine owned felt like somebody shoved a sock in the bell & leadpipe, absolutely no core or resonance. Suprising considering the Olds student trumpets played almost as well as many pro horns of the era. Lee always brought it though, even though this wasn't near his best performance of Moanin,' he was still bringing the soulful truth to the best of his ability at that moment!
intrepidpooch Agreed!!! It appears you done your homework on one of my favorite Trumpet players. Its been stated his sound was so natural by Freddy Hubbard and other hot shot Trumpet player during his time!!!
+Daniel B. Titus Thanks man! Yeah, Lee's been one of my chief inspirations ever since I first heard him at 13. Along with Hub, K.D., Miles, Clifford, Fats, and Woody!
🙌🏾🙌🏾
Yes he was one of a kind, he came before his time and left before his time. Great, great
Everybody raise a toast to one of the greatest jazz trumpets on what would have been his 80th birthday! Happy Birthday Lee Morgan! Man you were good!!!!!!!!

Greatness in action!!
He was 23 years old at the time... Huge talent. I'm looking forward to watch the documentary "I called him Morgan".
23? so talented
Beautiful. Never seen him play a Cornet! Great tune!
Thats an interesting looking Cornet.
Ok after some research it looks like a (long/american model) less bends in the tubing unlike the British style i have which has a shepherds crook bell.
there's such a sense of humanity in Lee's playing. such a sense of love
richard mackota I refer to that as passion.
Another of the countless fine performances of this artist.
Nothing better than to hear the OG’s doing what us youngsters are trying to emulate
He left this world 40 years ago today. Thanks for all the good music Lee!

A song you can never get tired of hearing and feeling.
Happy 75th birthday Lee Morgan! Miss you like crazy!
Lee and Clifford you are missed amongst us. We love your sweet style R.I.P. guy's.
The best that ever did it! The greatest trumpet of many of all time!
really? that's a huge statement that I happened to agree with, but what about Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Miles, Freddie
Hubbard?
Lee Morgan was one of those great, but under appreciated, jazz musicians. Good video. Thanks for posting it.
Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Woody Shaw.
Agreed

Happy birthday, Lee! You are not forgotten.
Happy Birthday Lee Morgan! What a player you were. Nobody could touch you!
I see you are just as much a fan as I am! There were many greats before him, but Lee Morgan is my all time favorite jazz trumpeter. A true jazz master!
voicegirl555 No one will ever even come close.
Some great footage of Ray Brown.
The trio was giving Mr Morgan such a solid base to work from
This is as solid a group as I have ever heard. Music may be timeless but, I was born a little late.
Lee fighting that cornet. still sweet. man , he is good.
Fighting that Olds and he still killed it.
Whats wrong with the instrument?
@@maxwesmont I think he means he's struggling because he's a trumpet player and cornets feel different.
dreaded sage

@@maxwesmont he would periodically pawn his actual trumpet for money and then reclaim it after getting paid
Fantastic!
What a pleasure! Lee's innovative, & exciting story telling is pure magic. He always generates enormous power, drama and coolness with his phrasing. What a great talent!
absolutely
AWESOME!!!
Sensational!!!! Great stuff!!!! Lee and Oscar forever!!!!
Najponk Jazz You know Najponk i never even knew that Lee had ever played with Oscar? I do prefer Bobby playing his own tune, though. Cheers!
Gone 44 years but not forgotten. What a musician you were!
One of the great talents that left us too soon.
His solos were gargantuan, his ideas just astounding. He will be forever missed, long live Lee.
Yes, your are right! Lee was a first class artist who tremendous work lives on in these wonderful live performances. Rest In Peace, Lee! Thanks for the memories.
Can't wait to see the forthcoming documentary 'I called Him Morgan'
just watched it today.
broken927 As good? better? than expected? hope it comes out on DVD soon
I did not go in with any expectations. Overall I thought it was a good doc on a person I knew nothing about. The music of course was great and the movie is definitely worth catching on DVD.

Nice to hear and see him and the orch. playing!
Gifted player Morgan was, and one hell of a rhythm section with him, THE TRIO.
I adore it. Cool, smooth and relaxing!
Those guys are pretty good!
Happy Birthday Lee! Hard to believe you would have been 74 years old. Your music is more alive than ever!
Great clip.
magnificent!!!
とにかくこの時代のこの連中はカッコいいね。特にリーモーガン。高校の頃から50年以上聞いてるけど、全部ひっくるめてこんなカッコいいのいないね。
Heim?!?!

4 legends on their respective instruments!
I miss Lee, he still lives.
En el Olimpo del jazz. Lástima su trágico final. Un saludo desde España.
정말 타고났네요~사랑해요 lee morgan♡♡♡
Marvelous quartet!
looking forward to documentary...
Thanks!! Been looking for Lee Morgan video to show my classes.
You have to wonder if a camera was down or there were blocking issues of some sort. Can't fathom why there are no close-ups of Peterson, particularly as he was trading fours with Morgan.
This is JAZZ!!!
I felt in love with his song! Because of "Sakamichi no Apollon" :)
GREAT TUNE, GREAT LEE MORGAN, BRAVISSIMO !!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS RIO DE JANEIRO BRASIL
this is great, Thanks! The first vid I saw of Lee who left us all too soon and was murdered on the bandstand.
Spectacular!
Greg Hufton
king Cole
Great !
thanks so much for the share. hard bop, theee best! sidewinder, the best of it!
Listen to Lee's version of "Search for The New Land" I just about wore that album. I had many of his recordings on vinyl.
長年JAZZを聞いていますがOscar PetersonとLee Morganの競演があろうとは
知りませんでした。
感動です。Lee Morgan Forever!
Hard bop trumpeter. Like Clifford Brown, he was cut down prematurely. Were robbed of a great talent
Awesome!!!!!
Esto es por lo que amo el jazz.
YEAH!!!!!!!
I fell in love with this song because Lee Morgan is a bad ass.
this is what life is all about
lloyd Stripling Yes sir
His playing is so hot i was getting goose-bumps mid-way ...how can anyone think up those simply inexplicably fantastic transitions ?
so very cute and beauty, thx 4 this masterpiece!!!
cheers for u man!!!
Yeaaaahhh!! Sounds a lot like his ´61 "Expoobident" album. There was only one Lee Morgan, and there will never be another one.
Junk-sick Lee - still so good !!!
Pure badass.
最高ですね〜
That articulation. Kudos Sir. Kudos.
refreshing, listening to lee morgan, oscar peterson,, do hear this on your radio? no! we hear only bullshit What an exciting time that was!
I really do miss KJAZ-fm in Alameda, Ca. It was a 24 hour jazz station, and they played music of all the giants of jazz. None of "contemporary" stuff!
Cool!
Most like Lee :)
Very beautiful Lee Morgan's Fingers ! But the music is great!
Lee knows he was wrestlin' with that cornet! I can't honestly say who won the battle. But Lee was soulful as always.
I Agree
HEAVEN!
Go Lee!!
LOVE it when the video and audio are synced! Great job, thanks! I wonder why so many are messed up? :-(
copyright maybe?
good is good for ever, tanks

+intrepidpooch I'n my best dreams at night I play a phrase from Lee.
intrepidpooch well I thought I would be the opposite....that he would play the shit out of the student grade trumpet?
There is inherent limitations to a student horn.
whoa….that is coolness…awwwllllll the way..
Obrigada
The Baddest Cat on horn.......Ever!
JZULU1 Right on
Hard bop grommelant.
no one should not notice the great ed thigpen on drums!
Lee Morgan(氏)の映像を見られるのは嬉しいです。
One bad man.
to think he was 23 here!
Miles was great - Lee was the Master...
more passionate ,not as smooth and creative ,in my judgment - which is questionable .
Are you saying Miles was smoother than Lee?!? Miles is the most abrasive player!
George Koonce
RJ Money abrasive how? explain please
Clifford Brown tutored Lee so who is the Master?Lee's phrasing was definitely Clifford like as he was a direct influence on the young player.
