Lee Morgan is the very definition of confidence and cockiness in a great musician. He was so young to be so great. The first trumpet player that inspired me to pick up a horn.
The Prince of Blue Note. His mastery of the trumpet was unparalleled....his fate unimaginable...his legacy indelible. Rest in peace Brother Morgan. You overcame and accomplished so much, to meet death over so little. 🎺
@A L Maxwell Thanks so much! I believe each musician should receive at the very least acknowledgement. Then too, perhaps the listener wants to hear more of a particular musician.
John Gilmour only plays a few notes but they are the perfect compliment to Lee Morgan in the chorus. It gives me goosebumps everytime. This song has a magic to it. Thanks for the upload
If anyone in jazz can capture the song with the right tonation and the mood it is without a doubt Lee Morgan. His sensitivity is what makes him so great imho. Simply AWESOME!
Amazing how far some have come. My father served in the Korean War, went and graduated college shortly marrying my mother afterwards and STILL was not allowed to sit in an audience with whites because he was Black. Imagine that. A Black man and woman denied entrance into a white forum to hear a magnificent group of Black men play Jazz.
Jazz or rather Black Classical Music as Lee Morgan once put it. The oppressor may have stole our land, sold our people into slavery and looted our minerals, but they can never take away the blessings that God poured upon all black people. Our souls remain intact.
@@waynecolburn8849 Lee Morgan did say those words in 1965 and again in 1969 when Los Angeles Councilman. Tom Bradley was defeated his first run for city Mayor. Lee was being interviewed on a local radio station. He also mentioned he was not getting paid any royalties by the advertising companies for sampling his song; Sidewinder. You are, not your. Peace!
God pour much blessings on white people. He made all people. My grandfather was bunny berigan God gave him musical talent. Let's stop crying about everything.
Lee Morgan is in a special league of trumpeters like Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie with their unmistakably unique sound, gone much to early 👏🏽🙏🏾🕊️
Put some more respect on John Hicks! One of the unsung greats of the era. I completely understand the fandom surrounding Lee, but let's not make the same mistakes over and over again and ignore subtler brilliance...
+Dick Roche - I think I found the piano player - I went to a book I have called HARD BOP ACADEMY by Alan Goldsher - the book is about Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and has a lot of pictures - the picture of Walter Davis Jr. (who played briefly with Blakey in the mid 60's) matches the gentleman playing piano with the group
The Jazz Messengers had many different lineups.. the players here are Lee Morgan, trumpet; John Gilmore, tenor sax; John Hicks, piano; Victor Sproles, acoustic double bass; Art Blakey, drums

Lee Morgan .
@today is not yesterday was he up in the heights coping? Or was that after he was clean?
Mine as well!
Same here! I keep a set of his cd's in my car. I listen to him nearly every day! He would be celebrating his 86th birthday this year had he lived.
I love Lee. My grandfather bunny berigan would love his playing. Lee is one of the very greatest.
@alterdestiny thanks !
AMEN to that!

Lee Morgan, trumpet
John Gilmore, tenor sax
John Hicks, piano
Victor Sproles, bass
Art Blakey, drums
Thanks for that, because ten seconds of John Hicks was blowing me away. Now why I don't have more of him...no clue.

Lee. Simply Brilliant. Thank you for posting this gem.
Such a treat...thank you for sharing...
EVERY note by all the group is etched into my brain ! / if someone asked me ..." What is Jazz ?" ...i would play this for them
John Gilmour only plays a few notes but they are the perfect compliment to Lee Morgan in the chorus. It gives me goosebumps everytime. This song has a magic to it. Thanks for the upload
Andrew Slaunwhite ...Gilmore* The latter is obligatos behind Lee's solo. It's natural!
never a dull moment in lee's playing
Regality...I LOVE THIS! Sidewinder too!
Thanks for Sharing This Rare & Classic Footage!!!!
So excellent.
The tune is actually called Lament for Stacey, which was recorded on S'Make It (1964) with this band + Curtis Fuller.
Andy Cook ...Correct!
Lee Morgan and woody Shaw the two greatest trumpet masters in jazz history!!
If anyone in jazz can capture the song with the right tonation and the mood it is without a doubt Lee Morgan. His sensitivity is what makes him so great imho. Simply AWESOME!
And he was taken away from us much TOO soon!
Classic lee
Super gay comment, u must be a white dude
My ears prefer Lee Morgan more than any other!
Thanks for posting the album info!
Damn, the BBC is so awesome! Imagine this on NBC in 1965!
BBC 4 didn't exist in 1965 - so don't feel too bad about the NBC - this would have been shown much later ;)
@@jacquiepaumier8676 this was shown on the bbc at the time..nothing to do with BBC4

i have not smoked for 40 years, but a scotch and a cigarette would go down very well listening to this.
Art Blakey, Lee Morgan two cold musicians/educators!
Classy dude that Lee Morgan
情感 美 苦悩 陰影 深淵 哲学 愛 etc. 素晴らしい!!
Música que sienta cuán brisa fresca en verano de calor 👏👏👏. Un saludo desde España.
Phenomenal
very well said!
Is this the same pianist that played with the Wes Montgomery quartet for so long? On beautiful cuts like "Here's That Rainy Day"?
+jamal jabbar John Hicks?
DELIGHTFUL LEE !!!!! ☆☆☆☆☆
John Gilmore
John Gilmore's sound on those hits is unreal.....honestly mistook it for alto playing (thought it was McClean) at first.
Great video quality, and a new song for me. Does anyone know if/what album this composition is on?
It's called Lament For Stacy. It's on an Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers album called 'S Make It
He was such a handsome young man 😍
And oh so GIFTED!!!
A family trait, along with music lol🙂
Maravilhoso top das galáxias 🍷🍸

+ken jacobs Jazz Messengers, Lee Morgan, John Gilmore, Art Blakey, and Bobby Timmons

Didn't John end up with Sun Ra? I saw the in Was D.C.

Morgan and Davis are so uncanny. It's almost like their styles are intertwined.
They were great friends 🙌
willing to bet none of them ever took a music lesson in their lives...all pure individual talent..can't be bought....can't be sold..
@today is not yesterday Blakey was entirley self taught but the others all studied music
Such a stereotype and so untrue!
🤡🤡🤡
straight ahead jazz played correctly very little improvisation needed
💚🌾🙄🌱
Lee Morgan played the trumpet the way Miles Davis wished he could have played.
I sure agree with you raoul. Much more melodic for my money.
Miles praised him as the baddest trumpeter💯

Lo❤
Who's better than Lee? Clifford. Maybe. Woody. Maybe. Freddie. Maybe. Miles. Nope.
Is it true that Art is responsible for getting his side men hooked on skag?
Probably.....only they know what really went on.
that's what I heard..apparently Blakey had a life long heroin habit but it never got the better of him like it did others
That's why Horace Silver quit. Also I think it was Wayne Shorter that said Art asked him to help him shoot up one time.
@@wel722 Thank you!! There are those who prefer to focus on the negative.
Great playing...terrible perm
He was covering a burn he got nodding out on heroin, he was slumped over on a radiator and didn't notice till he sobered up. Poor guy.
