    Lee Morgan is the very definition of confidence and cockiness in a great musician. He was so young to be so great. The first trumpet player that inspired me to pick up a horn.

      Same here! I keep a set of his cd's in my car. I listen to him nearly every day! He would be celebrating his 86th birthday this year had he lived.

    John Gilmour only plays a few notes but they are the perfect compliment to Lee Morgan in the chorus. It gives me goosebumps everytime. This song has a magic to it. Thanks for the upload

    The tune is actually called Lament for Stacey, which was recorded on S'Make It (1964) with this band + Curtis Fuller.

    If anyone in jazz can capture the song with the right tonation and the mood it is without a doubt Lee Morgan. His sensitivity is what makes him so great imho. Simply AWESOME!

    Amazing how far some have come. My father served in the Korean War, went and graduated college shortly marrying my mother afterwards and STILL was not allowed to sit in an audience with whites because he was Black.
    Imagine that. A Black man and woman denied entrance into a white forum to hear a magnificent group of Black men play Jazz.

    Jazz or rather Black Classical Music as Lee Morgan once put it. The oppressor may have stole our land, sold our people into slavery and looted our minerals, but they can never take away the blessings that God poured upon all black people. Our souls remain intact.

      Lee Morgan did say those words in 1965 and again in 1969 when Los Angeles Councilman. Tom Bradley was defeated his first run for city Mayor. Lee was being interviewed on a local radio station. He also mentioned he was not getting paid any royalties by the advertising companies for sampling his song; Sidewinder. You are, not your. Peace!

    Lee Morgan is in a special league of trumpeters like Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie with their unmistakably unique sound, gone much to early 👏🏽🙏🏾🕊️

    Put some more respect on John Hicks! One of the unsung greats of the era. I completely understand the fandom surrounding Lee, but let's not make the same mistakes over and over again and ignore subtler brilliance...

      +Dick Roche - I think I found the piano player - I went to a book I have called HARD BOP ACADEMY by Alan Goldsher - the book is about Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and has a lot of pictures - the picture of Walter Davis Jr. (who played briefly with Blakey in the mid 60's) matches the gentleman playing piano with the group

      The Jazz Messengers had many different lineups.. the players here are Lee Morgan, trumpet; John Gilmore, tenor sax; John Hicks, piano; Victor Sproles, acoustic double bass; Art Blakey, drums

      He was covering a burn he got nodding out on heroin, he was slumped over on a radiator and didn't notice till he sobered up. Poor guy.
