About this video:
I love using textured styling boards (also referred to as 'styling surfaces') to shoot invitation details, pre wedding photos and for flay lay photography.
These photography backdrops can cost between 100-300 dollars, however, it's quick, easy and super fun to make your own! So I made this fun step-by-step tutorial to share how to make styling boards from home for under $20!
I also own some pre-made boards, yet still I love making and customizing my own (especially for wedding styled shoots where you can create it to match the theme!) And I hope you have fun creating your own boards too!
xoxo Chelsea Nicole
QOTD: Are you going to make one? If so, what do you plan to use your new styling board for?! Share below 👇
Time for an 'essential' trip to Home Depot to pick up a caulk gun! Another amazing and beautiful video from Chelsea Nicole. Who would have guessed?
Haha - Thanks PG!! If you go out, just be safe! Or Amazon has them too. :)
This video was so helpful! I always struggle with flat lays and now I feel prepared and inspired to create something beautiful!!

Thanks Christina! Not only are styling boards easy to make, but it's a ton of fun too! Such a great way to get creative. :)
This is super helpful, totally thought those looked super high end and would be harder! Thanks for inspiring me to finally make one!
They're so easy and fun to make and are such a great way of up-leveling your detail and flat lay photography! You should definitely try it out! :)

You're so welcome! I'm so glad I was able to inspire you 😊
Hi Chelsea! I love your videos! ❤️ I’m wanting to make a DIY style board that I can roll up and take with me to a destination wedding next month. Do you have any experience with this? And what would make a good board? I was thinking up buying some canvas & painting it with acrylics, but I’m not sure if it would crack. 😬
I also like to use textured ceramic tiles from Lowe's. You can get about 8 square feet for $6
Great tip Michael!! :) Love getting creative with different flat lay surfaces!
I love that texture! So nice for creating some background detail. Do you always lean towards more neutral colors, or do you sometimes make boards that have more "pop" to them?
Thanks Skye!! I tend to lean towards light or more neutral tones since they tend to match my brand & subject matter better, but I've seen boards that are more saturated in color that are just as beautiful. I think it depends on how you're using them. But they're so easy to make you could definitely experiment and make more than one - one more neutral & one with some POP!
wow.. nice ..we will be friends
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing! What colors/names are the paints you used for this video?
Thanks Shayleen! 🤗 I can’t remember the paint colors, but I just went to Lowe’s and looked at home color swatches and found some dusty rose pinks I liked. Hope you have fun making yours! Would love to hear how it turns out!
What size did you decide for your styling board? I have two 18”x24” canvas boards from Blick.
Hi 💛 could I use any paint for this or should I use wall paint?
When I painted my Foam Core board it warped into a curve. Twice. So I gave up.
Have you tried speckling paste putty over the calk gun?
I haven’t tried that! There’s a couple ways you can go, but the reason we chose the calking is because of the flexibility of the material - to avoiding crumbling. So that would be the main thing I’d consider for durability. If you test other materials I’d love to hear how it works out! 🙂
Great video!
