Shout out to Team Kamen Rider for trying DESPERATELY to help non-Japanese fans. Toei is totally screwing themselves with Western fans. But they are not as hip and media-savvy as TOHO or TSUBARAYA
They haven’t exactly done much to help non-Japanese Fans. They only sell the toys and they promote certain companies but not others. (Aka they only promote Shout Products)
@@boogerman908People think (and I don't blame them) that they're helping with all fronts of rider distribution, not solely toys. Toys seem to be their main priority though.
To put into context for Kamen Rider fans. In the exact same amount of time for Shout to get the rights to the OG Kamen Rider, Kuuga, Ryuki & Zero-One; Mill Creek release the equivalent of every Showa & Heisei Ultraman show. Had Toei put in the same amount of effort as Tsuburaya we could've gotten everything from the OG 1971 to at least up to ZI-O by now.
I wouldn’t go that far. A caveat is that while Mill Creek did release those shows, once they got to Tiga, Gaia, Dyna etc, they started downgrading to dvd copies which made releases happen faster since less work needed. We could have at least gotten Most of Heisei Part 1 though by now. I am hoping Shout shows something NEW at Anime Expo this week otherwise I’m just going to have to assume they are done with Kamen Rider new series
It’s funny, if Toei didn’t drop the ball with Kamen Rider distribution, I wouldn’t have got into Ultraman. Tsuburaya really going all out for its western fans ended up making me a fan lol
At this point it's going to be very hard for Toei to find traction in the west if they ever DO release the shows officially. Every single tokusatsu fan knows where to get fansubs for totally free at this point because we've all had to in order to be part of this fandom in the first place, it's very hard to argue with "totally free" in the market when all you need to access them is some basic internet knowhow that the fandom shares eagerly among itself, also for free. They've waited way too long.
This just makes me miss the era of fan-subbing. I know they still exist, they're just slightly more underground now. It's just a little harder for an old lady like me to dig for.
After watching this, it makes a lot of sense why the state of release is like this. I didn’t know that the bill for distributing any Rider content falls on who ever buys the rights. While part 2 hasn’t come out yet, I’m guessing the reason why the Kuuga manga and 01 comic has come out sub par is tied to the fact that getting those rights was expensive, thus leading to Titan probably looking to see what the cheapest route was to translate the manga and creating the comic.
Just the fact that Tsuburaya has given us such an excellent dub with Z, and Blazar looking to surpass even that, shows how much they understand their audience in the West. If only Toei would give us something anywhere close to that...
Toei: "We don't think KR can succeed in the West without following the Power Rangers formula." Tsuburaya: *uploading official English dubs of entire Ultraman shows with experienced VAs on their official RUclips channel* Toei: "Yeah, we don't see that."
This is a fascinating video. I'd love to see a longer breakdown that goes over every individual series and looks at which specific quality control issues they suffer, which series got things right, where people on the western market can start looking into content, and where things should develop going forward.
Very well done video, I enjoy Mako’s commentary. I also assume this issue does not have an easy fix, but maybe Toei could somehow find a way to bring Telsa or Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club to the west (including secondary countries) as a streaming service, I’m sure others (and myself included) wouldn’t mind paying for it if it were to happen. That way they’d not only be an official way to watch a vast majority of KR and SS’s catalogue (mainly those the west doesn’t already have) but it could also allow the funds to go straight to Toei showing them we want more.
Excellent video. Looking forward to the next part. Regarding the soundtracks, I’ve actually compiled a sheet that tracks EVERY release, Single, EP, OST, etc. with the links to both Apple and Spotify. This mainly becomes handy when looking for music that’s untranslated, or mistranslated, resulting in the search tools ineffective.

This was originally supposed to be a reply to a comment asking about the changes to show openings like in Ultraman Z but the original comment got yeeted while I was typing this up. /disclaimer Depends, sometimes they use a different verse after the halfway point of the series like they did with Ultraman Z. If you actually listen to what is being sung instead of just reading subs you'll notice the lyrics are actually different aside from the chorus (and sometimes even that gets adjusted). Similar thing happened with Kamen Rider Decade where they use the first verse for the early episodes and then transition to the second verse of the song being used for the opening in the latter part of the show. So using Decade as an example, episode 3 opening starts with "Miageru hoshii sore zore no rekishi ga, kagayite..." while like 38's opening begins "Lens goshi ni kiritotta keshiki wo, mitsumete mo..." since they're using different sections of the same song for the opening. They put way more effort into stuff like that then Western companies in general, most openings being full songs rather than just a minute or less that's used exclusively for the opening.
Only thing I can add is that Kamen Rider Ryuki was dubbed in Arabic back in 2007 ,broadcast in the SpaceToon channel on the Action Planet block with New Boy probably the one responsible for toy distribution. This was broadcast across the MENA region. Ryuki is the only season released in Arabic. In terms of tokusatsu, Along with them is Kamen Rider Dragon Knight in 2013-17 after Ryuki stopped being shown in 2012 and Armor Hero after that till an unknown date (I stopped watching the channel at that time)
Toku fan from europe here. It's a real pain to get ur hands on official toku releases from the US. Ordered my first disc releases from some shady US only shop because I had no credit card at that time. But orders were missing parts etc. and no customer service available for orders from outside US. So I just got myself a credit card to be able to order Toku releases from amazon us. Second, u need to get ur hands on an US Blu-ray player or a modded one because of the region locks most releases have. (Which is not cheap lol) And don't forget about the taxes one has to pay on top every time.
I kind of wish that they had actually partnered with the movie theater company stone theaters, so that way Shin Kamen Rider could be shown at the pointe 14.
another thing is Kamen Rider is still an relatively new brand in the west. Sentai and Ultraman had a head start Thanks to the old Ultraman dubs and Power Rangers. Those brands already had some mark in US pop culture. Kamen Rider doesn't have that. (seriously nobody but us Toku nerds remember Masked Rider or Dragon Knight). So I think Toei is playing it way too safe because of that. and vice-versa US companies are less will to pay Toei's license fees for the series.
Ultraman doing this the best but MANNNNN one thing I'm kinda peeved about is that there ain't no main social media that just blatantly advertises ALL the localized releases of these tokusatsu shows. YOU WANT FANS TO BUY STUFF RIGHT???? Is there marketing contracts that has to be made about the main social medias bothering to market their releases?
Toei is SO BAD AT THIS… with the fans. Sorry NOT SORRY for pirating these shows that they have screwed themselves on with “per show crazy overpriced addendum for distributors “ will stick to nyaa until further notice
I mean Shout shares some blame to. When it came to the original Fiveman postponing3-4 years ago I’m pretty sure they were upfront about it. But with Kamen Rider, they haven’t shown anything new since Zero-One back in late 2021
@@christopher961The worst part is that they had a perfect window to release W on Blu Ray when Fuuto P.I was airing and they just passed it up for no good reason.
Well then, why doesn’t TV Asahi have their own RUclips channel that they simulcast rider seasons on? If they do, they should seriously consider simulcasting every single episode as it airs.
If the company's making toku all banded together and made a good quality world wide stream service for toku I think it would be great. Like have a primary place to watch and buy stuff... I don't like streaming companies b.s and I'm leery of a monopoly, but I think they can pull it off
I couldn’t even find out how expensive each individual season was for these almost 25 seasons of modern rider with the new season, Gotchard, being the 25th.
21:22 That is markedly untrue as history has proven, though it depends on _how_ it's distributed. Like how most of 4kids' censorship was the result of having _older_ kids' shows (within the range of 7-10 or 11-13 by American standards, even in Japan shonen is for _adolescent_ boys) being aimed at _younger_ kids (3-7) on network television (basic cable has censorship for kids' shows too but the Nick brodcast of DBKai apparently wasn't as bad as the 4kids broadcast, even though people automatically blame 4kids for blue Popo because of course they do) and for some reason Warner Japan censored Jojo's for the subtitles on Crunchyroll and the censored footage was was re-used English dub release and Adult Swim (both while also using Viz's trademark paranoia name changes and also altering the Fist of the North Star references in Part 5 but leaving the anime robots whose copyrights WB didn't own in the Bohemian Rhapsody arc unaltered) (and Crunchryoll got the blame for this because of course it did).
The Wokening of Western Media seems like the right time for Japanese Media to follow Anime & Manga's Success, & kick their Baby Boomer Boss off the Building.
Wow Toei really need to get better of distributing their toku products. Tsuburaya in other hands have official youtube channel that air Reiwa Ultras (that still fresh like Ultraman Blazar) just 1 week difference than real airtime in Japan. The showa-new heisei era also sporadically uploaded to fill the gap between newer ultras, also some of their BTS interviews, theatre, and ofc their exclusive toys. The comment sections and viewers is clamoring with many old and new ultra fans. Even have dedicated english dubs and multiple subs for countries where ultraman show famous. Toei really need to get their shit together in the future since Tsuburaya really do a good job to Ultraman international markets. Many still dont know any new kamen rider show after EX Aid in my country. Unless you a diehard kamen rider fans nobody know Black Sun existed until they found it randomly recommended in Amazon Prime.
Mill Creek isn't perfect either. Some shows they couldn't acquire their license due to them being co-productions and therefore stuck in legal issues like the international co-produced shows (Ultraman: Towards the Future, Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero, Ultraman USA, Ultra Q The Movie and Ultra Q Dark Fantasy) Ultraman Tiga got heavily screwed thanks to Johnny 5's licensing issues banning us from the Final Odyssey and Take Me Higher, and seems like the reason why we haven't received a word regarding Taiga and beyond. Also you should add Cleopatra Entertainment to the Ultra Series license as they're the ones releasing Shin Ultraman on physical media instead of Mill Creek
I think this company should break off any deals with hascrap. And concentrate on bringing out any old catalogues of characters. The voltes v series is fantastic. Much more than crap ❤
I feel like if Power Rangers were to get Japanese dubs again, the franchise would probably have to go animated first. or this could just be a Japanese content exclusive kind of thing.
Who would win? Every kamen rider in their strongest forms or every sentai team in their strongest forms like super zenkaizer, super abare red max, gokai red ship armor, gokai silver gold mode and more
The problem that I’ve seen has to do with the Ultraman regulos series. After the first couple of episodes which had English dubs, they suddenly switched over to the Japanese audio for no reason.
I watch on tablet too. On the top right corner of the video you touch the gear icon then you go to Audio Track then you pick either English dubbed or Japanese original. I wanna watch in Japanese, but it always starts with the English dub first. It’s so annoying.
That's actually because Regulos has a dual audio setting! One's for the english dub and one's for the japanese dub, just click the settings on the video and you should be able to access it pretty easily!!
21:42 What about the Drama CDs? Even with anime those _literally never_ get English dubs, are they owned by record labels too or something? Even video games don't get dubbed drama CDs. Even Europe doesn't get drama CDs for anime and games and the medium of audio dramas is still alive and well over there, just look at the Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas (which is where the 8th Doctor's canonical adventures can be found aside from the movie but the rest is mostly B-canon) for example.
If Tokusatsu itself is already a niche genre in the West community, why asking for even more niche genre/format like audio dramas to be dubbed and released in the West? If they are not making any money from it, they wont simply risk doing it.
I'm happy to see tokusatsu being distributed in the west to receive the attention IT DESERVES but this is also bad because as a toku fan who watched tokusatsu before it became so available(around 2016 during high school) it means there will be more people who won't accept tokusatsu for what it truly is or try to ruin it, which is A LIVE ACTION GENRE MADE USING SPECIAL EFFECTS but for some reason some people see it as "power rangers" which is A LITTLE ACCEPTABLE but the worst I've seen is amateur/ new tokusatsu fans who have recently come from other genres such as anime treating it as if it's anime which is unacceptable, TOKUSATSU SHOULD BE ACCEPTED FOR WHAT IT IS, A LIBVE ACTION GENRE which uses that LIVE ACTION FORM AS ORIGINAL GENUINE CONCEPTS NOT BASED ON OTHER FORMS OF MEDIA
Toei tokusatsu world isnt meamt for the viewers. The channel is actually for potential distributors. Which os why the videos are 480 or lower as well... Even when those shows were exclusively hd. Also using shinebreakers amazon review for gridman was a bad example. He made basically those same comments for half of the ultra releases even when they weren't accurate.
On the Spanish side of latin america Prime video also has zi-o and build apart from Kuuga and agito which released like two months ago but I don't know if there's other shows releasing soon I think sato company already subbed ryuki so it would be nice to have it not dubbed
Quite good actually, at least in my country , kamen rider having my country language dub and distribute by a local satellite TV and the distribution of dvd with dub is easily bought. While Ultraman , like the above but also having a entire channel uploading previous Ultraman since orb/ginga ( now with geed) with dubbing.
At least Tsuburaya recognize and respect international fans outside of Japan while Toei being the opposite has gotten selfish for decades and striking down every fansubs.
General question but why does most RUclipsrs need to write a script for videos not saying to be rude but just generally curious because I think it’s kinda silly

(Which is not cheap lol)
And don't forget about the taxes one has to pay on top every time.
The Ultraman BDs are region free
@@Valtharr Yes I know
Let’s not also forget that Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is still yet to be released in any Western territory officially.
If you ask me, Hasbro should Distribute All of Kamen Rider, & Release Blu Rays via Shout Factory.
This is a really good informative video
I kind of wish that they had actually partnered with the movie theater company stone theaters, so that way Shin Kamen Rider could be shown at the pointe 14.
now THIS is a makosatsu moment
I think we need more mako guys.
WELCOME ABOARD MAKO DO EDUCATE US ABOUT THE ULTRAVERSE AND RIDERVERSE!❤❤
another thing is Kamen Rider is still an relatively new brand in the west.
The US has some Exposure of Metal Heroes thanks to Brands like VR Trooper & the Beetleborg Franchise.
I really watch kotetsu toys japan Secret base his videos are awesome. I love his videos it’s really amazing
I didn’t know the Tokyo HD service was a thing. Either that, or I had just forgotten about it.
Correction all 15 Super Sentai DVD Box sets from Shout Factory are still in print. Nothing has gone out of print.
I wish Shout Factory Imports ALL Kamen Riders for a Showa & Heisei Blu Ray Box Set.
OH BOY I FINALLY HAVE A CHANCE TO WHINE ABOUT TOEI
If Toho, Kadokawa, and Tsuburaya are the generous kids that share their candy with class then Toei is that greedy kid that barely shares anything
If they do, they should seriously consider simulcasting every single episode as it airs.
simply put, investing in international distribution for a relatively niche franchise is a risk.
Gotchard is the 5th reiwa rider, and 34th overall
@@Kamenriderbuster2022 I was talking about rider seasons since 2000.
@@haydenreviewscustomcombos oh ok
TriStar is a perfect US distributor.
As an Australian, I’m used to it
21:22 That is markedly untrue as history has proven, though it depends on _how_ it's distributed.
Tsuburaya really out here proving a Toei that things can be done simple without the Japanese Company mentality and just wing it like a champ!
The Wokening of Western Media seems like the right time for Japanese Media to follow Anime & Manga's Success, & kick their Baby Boomer Boss off the Building.
I mean with what funimation and cruchyroll are doing in their localisation, its understandable
Every kamen rider in their strongest forms or every sentai team in their strongest forms like super zenkaizer, super abare red max, gokai red ship armor, gokai silver gold mode and more
You could say that the channel is now...Makosatsu
Im sorry
3:59 sound like a lawsuit bound to happen eventually if toei continue doing that shit
If exporting kamen rider to the USA is difficult now imagine for Latino America, there's no way to consume kamen rider content in a legal way.
The problem that I’ve seen has to do with the Ultraman regulos series. After the first couple of episodes which had English dubs, they suddenly switched over to the Japanese audio for no reason.
Subs are the superior method anyway.
You can switch between english dub and japanese dub in the player settings under the "Audio Track" option
@@docbrown2020 I usually watch RUclips on a tablet. So, I don’t exactly know how that would work.
Is that the Ultraman Justice henshin device you're wearing as a necklace? Very cool. Nice to have a rather gender ambiguous ultraman
It's a good video,nice
Japan ignores the western Market or no?Answer my questionou please
I love tokusatsu, but this atual series are bizarre and diferent of the old tokusatsu its my opnion.
And the animes are diferent too, fact.
I love the old animes too.
Makosatsu!
tv-nihon is still the best fan sub
They should probably fix the subtitles
@@shinyanakagawa8241 If it were just toku, that would check out but it's not.
Tokusatsu get's a Stigma with Saban changing the Actors for Western Taste, to the Butchring of Kamen Rider thanks to Saban's Masked Rider.
I started booing at the screen when Titan Comics got brought up
At least the US gets something
Shout should start Being the Sole Distributor of the Reiwa Rider Shows(& Movies the Promote them).
1:47 4 movies not 3
Toei tokusatsu world isnt meamt for the viewers. The channel is actually for potential distributors. Which os why the videos are 480 or lower as well... Even when those shows were exclusively hd. Also using shinebreakers amazon review for gridman was a bad example. He made basically those same comments for half of the ultra releases even when they weren't accurate.
Its a bit of a paperwork mess 🤔 everybody wants a peice of the pie
can i get a link to the scifijapan release ultraman list?
I wish Japan learn from Korea, they Import their Kdramas Worldwide with Netflix or themselves.
as a latin american
im still waiting on new kamen rider stuff
we only got like 4 seasons of hesei phase 1
and i had to scavange to find those
On the Spanish side of latin america Prime video also has zi-o and build apart from Kuuga and agito which released like two months ago but I don't know if there's other shows releasing soon I think sato company already subbed ryuki so it would be nice to have it not dubbed
How about Toei vs Tsubaraya tokusatsu distribution on South East Asia
Quite good actually, at least in my country , kamen rider having my country language dub and distribute by a local satellite TV and the distribution of dvd with dub is easily bought.
While Ultraman , like the above but also having a entire channel uploading previous Ultraman since orb/ginga ( now with geed) with dubbing.
At least Tsuburaya recognize and respect international fans outside of Japan while Toei being the opposite has gotten selfish for decades and striking down every fansubs.
How do I watch newer seasons of super sentai with eng subs legally
General question but why does most RUclipsrs need to write a script for videos not saying to be rude but just generally curious because I think it’s kinda silly
she has more rizz no offense stronger presence
Toei is just terrible with who they license out to. Hasbro and Funimation are just, the embodiments of actually garbage brands.
I wish tsuburaya rerelease the old English dubs of ultraman, seven, Tiga
