For me it always comes down to accessibility. People in video game circles have had this conversation for a long time when it comes to emulation and a recent study helped put a number on it. When 87% of video games released between 1960-2009 are out of print and hard to acquire for a general audience, people will turn elsewhere even if it technically illegal. Locking down and making it harder is the wrong answer, you have to open up and make your content more acessable, because people will always find a way to watch your show or play your game even if it means stepping into some shady territory to do so.

Tbf, the Trinity drama is not just about scans being distributed. It was leaked a week or 2 before the official release date of that one Terebi-kun issue which has the information and scans about Trinity Zio. The gullible Vietnamese guy however, asked Shirakura the question while including Trinity Zio as an example as if it has already been officially shown off to the public when it really is not. So yeah, any person who is not affiliated with Toei tokusatsu filming staff, Bandai staff and the staff behind Terebi-kun, should know nothing about Trinity Zio during that time.

As somebody who lives in the UK, because I don't want to use a VPN to watch Tokushoutsu or buy a rather expensive region-free Blu-Ray player and the Kamen Rider Zero-One dvd release, fansubs are literally the only option I have to watch tokusatsu lmao. Unless enough people cry out about it, I don't see region locking changing.

@@yeehaw5889 If you have a PC with a Blu-Ray drive, then FOSS programs like VideoLan VLC can run DVD's and BD's from outside your region by bypassing the region check when telling VLC to play a disc.
This has been a function of VLC for the better part of 22 years, going back to the days of DVD-ROM drives having a limit of 5 region set changes before it locked to a particular region if using software like PowerDVD, and VLC ignores those region set changes as they were'nt recognised outside of Windows.

The think to understand by TOEI going after fansub is that to HOLD you trademark you MUST defend it. If any competitor can prove that TOEI let someone break their copyright and trademarks, then that means they have abandonned their claims to it. So, unofficially they probably like the publicity, but OFFICIALLY they have to act like they don't know they exist. As long BELIEVABLE DENIABILITY exist, the fansubs can still go on, if they become too well known, if TOEI hears about them, they HAVE to move.

I'll be completely honest, being a total outsider looking in, I find it pretty interesting how one's background can change their entire view on this kind of stuff.
Specifically talking about how "taboo" and "looked down upon" fansubs are over there in America, to give a little bit of history, over here in Latin America, anime has been hugely prevalent and popular since the 70's-80's, maybe even earlier, and while you all were getting your first anime boom through the 2000's, we here only had that grow more and more, but unlike in the US, we didn't get a billion different properties getting localized and released all over the country, instead, we started getting fansub groups growing and growing, online was getting to be our resource to watch almost all anime that wasn't some kid shows or very rare exceptions, it all peaked by 2008-2015, where most people you would even talk about watching anime, they all just directed you to the many sites that compiled fansubs or were directly made to have their own sub gallery, and it's only on the last 8-9 years that legal streaming and subs of popular anime has even been pushed, but so much stuff still gets skipped by places like Crunchy that fansubbing and those sites from before are still as prevalent, all of this context translates to our Toku community in general, we absolutely love and support all we can our extremely rare instances of official subs, hell, official DUBS which only happened very recently with Ryuki, Agito and Faiz, but since we only have like, 6 shows, all only Kamen Rider, available on any site with legal subs/dubs, Fansubs literally carry everything this brand has, just like how fanshops are the only way we ever get any type of merch, over here, we don't really have something like that LittleKuriboh situation even being able to happen, because all the people that speak our language basically know and understand fansubs, since we all are used to just, not getting stuff

The one problem I have with the Tubi TV/shout factory version of Ultraman Tiga, is that they use the insert theme “Awaken! Ultraman Tiga“. But, I can understand that because they probably don’t want Johnny’s and associates coming after them. either way, it stinks that the English dub wasn’t an option on the shout factory version. The RUclips releases of current Ultraman seasons now have the option to select an English audio track, so… who knows.

The poor translations and quality control from companies like Shout Factory hurt the legitimate market. I bought their Fiveman DVD set and found that the subtitle track included Closed Captioning. When I reached out to them to report the issue and ask if they were going to release a new print run with subtitles and Closed Captioning on separate subtitle tracks, I was told they wouldn't. I watched a few episodes of fansubbed Fiveman and enjoyed it so much that I preordered the DVD set the day it was announced. Payed $50+ for a sub that is worse than a fan sub burned to DVDs I could have bought on eBay. I won't be buying any of their Toku releases going forward and tell others to do the same.

Toei at the very least has waited WAY too long to fully jump into the Western market. It cannot compete with fansubs who give you more, faster, for FREE. There is no possible case where Toei can get the edge on fansubs when their official releases don't include all the movies, specials and extras that fansub groups do as a matter of course. And again. Free.

As someone who got into Rider through Dragon Knight then later looked more into the series and got into the Series proper with Decade through fansubs on RUclips of all places. I'm very grateful to them, I was able to watch Den-O, Kiva, Decade up to Foruze. I stopped at Wizard cause they started to get harder to find and the site they were on looked sketchy. As a kid on his family computer I didn't wanna screw that up. I'm still fairly wary of Torrents. But I'm more open to them now after getting back into the franchise after watching Zero-One and Kuuga. I'm just never sure where to look for a trustworthy place to get them at. I would love for more legally available Tokusatsu to be available mostly Kamen Rider for me. But also other series you have talked about like Garo. But I know at a lot Toku relies on the fansub community. So I know my best bet is to go for fansubs. It's just finding the right place for me.

If Toei don't provide their shows to foreigners, then fine, its probably just distribution issues. But if they then send legal threats to fansubbers, then I have to presume that the higher ups at Toei are xenophobic, since it doesn't benefit them in any way to do that.
If that is true and they have no intention of ever releasing Kamen Rider and Super Sentai in the west (excluding their pathetic attempts so far) then the legally grey methods of watching are perfectly moral in my opinion. I'm not letting some random CEOs determine what I can and can't watch.

    • @megadong2398

Also softsubs can pretty easily be used with most Japanese releases. I own the Genm DVD that came with the Taiko no tatsujin gashat. In order to get the subtitles to work I had to change their timing a bit (delaying them by a negative amount), and split the video, cause on the DVD it's one file, but TVDB expected it to be 3 files.
That was only needed because I needed to split it for Kodi.
But most movie and tv show dvds/blurays should be relatively plug and play.

  • @caprisunnyd4478

As great as it is to have Super Sentai available in streaming and Blu ray but who ever worked on the subtitles didn't do their job well since whenever someone talks the subtitles doesn't show up. Like Carranger and Abararanger for example.
