The real question is why do these adult toku series have to be reimaginings of older properties. We need more like Garo; adult-oriented toku shows that are their own thing and not tied to any preexisting IP.

Toku is hard to fund without toy sales, which series for older audiences don't really sell. Garo only lasted as long as it did because it had a really popular pachinko game. So that's why there's not that much original adult toku and why they tend to not be that many episodes.

sure we have more dramatic and serious seasons like Gaim, but I wanna see how far one could push mature dramatic storytelling while operating inside the framework of a collectable toy-based gimmick
I think some interesting territory could be entered via really thematically considering the purpose of whatever selected toy-based gimmick the series has
I nominate OOO for this treatment, since I'm sure whatever dark version of a heisei phase 2 / reiwa would have to contend with greed as a theme anyway

For me the problem lies within "In Your Face" treatment of the adult toku genre. Makers think that just showing some gore and blood will make the show "Adult" content. The things need to be subtle. My first series was build and to this date it's most mature series I've seen. Things like Political Division, Capitalism, Civil War, Class divide and Poverty were discussed in a very subtle and mature manner(People might disagree with me). That's what i consider mature content not adult. Things need to be "Subtly Mature" not "Aggressively Adult"

It has conflict of morality, class/race division, slavery, MC's struggling to retain his humanity while fighting for what is right, peaceful monsters who tried to live peacefully with human, and human who are even more monstrous than the monster they created.
The Blood and gore are there to complement the mature theme. I saw Amazon and never once did I think the makers thought just putting gore on it is enough to carry the show. The show was able to explore the theme they did because of the adult rating.

This is the kind of discussion we need to have here with regards to Western Toku fandom. Kids toku and adult toku are both valid and deserve to be in the zeitgeist. As you and the team mentioned, that risk for adult re-imaginings to overshadow the originals is definitely there, but that's for sure thanks to the lack of Showa Toku history in North America. Shin Ultraman won't overshadow the original Ultraman in Japan obviously since it won't be hard to find the show in Japan (in either video or streaming), but for us here in the States? Well, thanks to Mill Creek and Shout, that problem won't be as pronounced. KR on the other hand is another story (but thanks to Discotek, at least there's legal means for anyone here in the States to dip their toes in KR Black with regards to KR Black Sun). Nice editing for this video and good chat overall gang!

I think the reason why “adult”-type media of something for young demographics don’t work, is because the writers believe they HAVE to have everything be 18+. Despite adults are (probably) already watching shows and movies for younger viewers. Even in “kid”-type media, there are dark moments throughout. Amazons S1 worked for me, because the writing was great and the characters were interesting. Then with S2, it felt like there was no effort put in. Black Sun could’ve been great, if the episodes weren’t 45 minutes to 1 hour and if the show was written by someone who was very experienced with toku already (or at least, Rider itself) GARO works, because it’s similar to other toku: changing leads and monster of the week stories, followed by being 20 to 30 minutes per episode.

I've very much been into the idea of "sequel/reboot project targeted at adults who grew up watching the original as kids", as long as it's done with respect by people who actually like and appreciate the original, not someone using deconstruction or edginess to take beloved childhood stuff down a peg. Opinions on their actual quality aside, in the west we've got both Legend of Korra and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Korra's made by the original creators and stars characters in their late teens and twenties instead of early teens, the same change in demographic as the target audience of Last Airbender to Korra. MotU Revelation is written by 40 year olds for 40 year olds, but it's not out there going "wow, wasn't that thing you liked as a child goofy and stupid?". It's sincere in its respect for and elevation of the material.
I haven't watched Heisei Seven or U7X, but your description sounds largely the same, knowing that there's an adult audience pre-established and targeting them rather than trying to appeal to either new kids, or new adults with no interest in toku.
Really, I think both Ultraman Nexus and Shin Ultraman are really the blueprint here. Rather than going out of their way to be edgy adult-only affair, they're just for all audiences. Adults and mature kids can appreciate the more complex storytelling and characterization, and your usual toku tweens can still enjoy the monster fights and the triumph of good over evil, and maybe they'll appreciate those complex aspects more when they reflect on it as they age.
(And admittedly, I do have a soft spot for stuff like Amazons and Black Sun combining the style and color and over-the-top nature of toku with gratuitous adult-only subject matter. It's nice to see stuff that's definitely not for kids still be able to have fun.)

I think the reason why I enjoyed Amazons and Kuuga so much was because the shows took themselves very seriously, whilst still providing plenty of moments for lightheartedness and kindness, the creators of said shows were very aware of the dark and cruel worlds they crafted, yet they still treated its characters with care and respect, they felt like mature stories rather than just a stew of violence and grimdark edginess
Wish we got more Tokus that took themselves seriously and didn't shy away from mature themes without falling for the trap of shallow edgyness, that was why Heisei era Kamen Rider succeeded where Shin Kamen Rider Prologue failed

As someone whose shepherded multiple people into the world of Tokusatsu, I've found they all followed a similar journey.
They get burnt out on Marvel and Star Wars and AAA western games, start to feel like they're just getting grumpy or old, stop getting excited for things, and then that She-Hulk vs Geats twerking meme gets them to ask me for context, since I'm that 'Power Rangers guy'.
Every time, the thing that gets them watching and becoming fans is the same thing. Earnestness. People have generally been willing to overlook awful CGI and some cheap props and a lot of empty car parking lot fight scenes because the show their watching seems genuine and passionate.

This is a beautifully explored and well written post, by you! I also love that, when Sentai is referenced, shots of Dynaman are used. That's my personal favorite Sentai show. "Just get in a rock quarry, on some stunt wires, and blow shit up, with rapid zoom lenses for every shot!" It's the BEST show, in my opinion, Bioman just ruined everything with "plots".
For me, I would also include Shin (not recent Shin), but Showa Shin, ZO, and J (the 90's movies) as adult iterations of Kamen Rider. First and Next were made more purposefully for adults, and they're basically perfect!
There is a scene from Barom 1 (1972), where one of the boys is strapped to a medical table, and the henchmen are all dressed as surgeons, with masks on, and they are there to extract his eyes! There was a cultural, like Yokai, horror element to Tokusatsu that has long-since retreated. Violence and horror is probably the reason that these early shows couldn't be translated earlier.
Kamen Rider Ghost should have been a horror-drama, but it was played as a kindergarten show.
I've been watching a lot of Battle Hawk (1976) this weekend. It's AMAZING! It also looks like every Toei super robot anime from that time! It's just pure Go Nagai designs, with no adjustments for live action. Heroes and villains look like it's an amateur stage show, wearing pajamas! Yet, it's super violent and fun!
I'm certainly not against shows like Amazons and Black Sun (I knew about the student protest movements in '60's and early 70's in Japan, so I loved that it was included) but I think you can find plenty of adult material in older shows before this. In Ultraman Taro, there is an episode where there is a haunted young girl who is irredeemable, by the end. The villain of the week is conquered, but she is still unsaved.

A really underrated tokusatsu that is for an adult audience is the series Girl Gun Lady (2021). It's 10 episodes, each 24 minutes long, and Bandai literally described it as "a tokusatsu series for adults in a new era." It's also one of the few toku out there with a majority female cast, as well as being fairly well written. Though, it may feel a bit odd to people more used to Rider or Sentai which use suits all the time and GGL being completely devoid of suits, opting for a motif of building plastic models for the girls to use as their weapons in the Girl Gun Fight in the show. Really annoying though that the show WAS actually able to watch legally while it was airing on the Bandai Spirits youtube channel but they since took it down from the channel so the only real option to watch it is to sail the seven seas. Still though, PLEASE give Girl Gun Lady a watch it deserves so much more attention and love.

I know for me I just wish we could get better distribution and dubs for Kamen Rider. I knew Blazar is planned with an English dub so that will be interesting to see how that goes. I am totally fine with subs but my nephew that likes how the characters look and is really into power rangers (he is often playing with his Kamen Rider W and Ultraman Ginga figures I got him) but he has a lot of anxiety around reading and subtitles make that harder on him so that makes it hard to get him to watch any of it. Tsuburaya is doing a good job on those fronts though, but to me at least though I like Ultraman the basically rubber muscle suit is kind of off-putting visually though I still enjoy the content of it. I originally was a power rangers and then Sentai fan with gokaiger but then I got hooked on a few Kamen rider seasons starting with Gaim, then Build, ZeroOne, Revice, and of course Geats.

There is nothing more painful that a 14 year old's version of "adult" when it's just terrible edge for edge's sake.
I'd rather jump off a bridge.

YES, KAMEN RIDER BLACK (or Black Kamen Rider as It was called Here) IS IMORTAL IN BRAZIL ❤️
Id watched It on the early 90's as a kid and Loved It. Rewatching today, with the eyes Of an adult e ABSURDLY MORE DEMANDING AS AUDIENCE ... I really got amazed How the series hold well trough The test Of time.
Lightning, ART direction, photography, that absolutelly killer soundrack, The analog special effetcs and the work on costume design ... It really is imaginative and keep powerful on a way most tokusatsus Id experiencie doesn't.
Some people tend to Think Its a matter Of production value, but I don't think thats necessary The case. The same way you can do great cinema with budget restritions and using imagination I believe the same aplies to tokusatsus.
I Mean ... Sure Black probably where not cheap at the time It was made. But you can reach similar results on an image perspective spenting much less budget today.
And, I almost forgot. Black story and script is spot on! Not even the sequel, Black RX did It so well. The basis Of ALL should always be a good Idea and good writing. After this comes creativity to use what you had at Your dispose to Tell that story.
Great video. Hugs From Brazil 😉✌🏻

    1. Cosmos was my gateway into the Ultraman franchise, loved it
    2. Next/Nexus had to be prime examples of mature themes done right while paying soft homage to the original series while doing its own thing. "Failure"? That is shocking to hear, as I am aware that Nexus as well as other characters have appeared in other media. I wish there were more like them
    3. Where's the next Garo season?😶 VR needs a season 2!

I personally loved to see both adult and family for all content but I rather prefer shows that combines the 2 aspects together that doesn't rely so much on the dark and edgy content such as with Tokusatsu Gagaga and Kamen Rider Build.
Those 2 shows managed to tell a story that resonates with the adult viewers and based on real life tragedies but it has that hope and light-heartedness that doesn't have to be entirely dark all the time.
Even then, i want more Toku shows that doesn't have to be gory, dark, or edgy but rather have a more balanced and deep nuances that feels mature because it has that positivity that confronts and acknowledges the negativity such as with Shin Ultraman. I think the recent shows did very well on this such as with Geats, and KingOhger and we are starting to see Blazar maybe having the same feel too.

I feel like adult tohoku shows have lots of potential.
I mean, look at The Boys, or The Witcher, GoT, Breaking Bad.
They are all adult shows that not only contain material that would never be allowed in kid stories nowadays, but have a balance between being dark and mature and just being a show.
The Boys, more so, as it is the ‘dark, adult and mature’ super hero show.
Even Netflix Daredevil was a great, more adult oriented super hero show.
While it’s debatable whether these adult shows should be reimagining on older kamen rider etc, but, I think if they choose ones that already contain elements of nature story telling, and focus on those aspects, even if only originally touched on in one episode, can be a great way to make the mature relevant. It isn’t turning a not ‘mature’ story (like don’t bully) into something dark, but fake what is already a mature story but executed in a ‘adult’ way.
People have said have kid shows can and have mature content, more so than some these adult shows, so I think that’s a good way to reimagine shows to be more adult while not feeling like just a ‘edgy’ version

J and Shin were for adults? I watched it as a child with no problems but as I grew I realized it more I might have got the message from these two too early either that I or I confused black suns mask for j and shins. Anyways it s a very underrated series with some fancy esthetics I hope others get the chance to find out about the big 3 of Tokusatsu specifically Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. Those are really good if you want action and split adult and children content basically for all ages. simply the fact that it's for all ages is a good thing the old characters the young audience can look up to like Takashi Hongo to Tokiwa Sougo. From Himitsu Sentai Gorenger to Ohsama Sentai Kingohger- Im getting off track anyways if you want something fun you and your friends can watch and if you're tired of childish stuff I'd prefer shin or black sun or amazons. - Tokusatsu Robloxian.

I don’t think Amazons would detract from their Showa predecessor. OG Amazon and Amazon alpha are tied for my number 2 favorite rider, and I like them for the exact same reasons. I took Amazons as a project to be a way for Toei to go back and do right by Amazon.
In the original series, they had to slam the breaks on the awesome limb-ripping and bloody biting because APPARENTLY it was over the line as a kids show, and it was replaced with some weird special effect where they ripped a printed picture of the bad guy in half. So I think the new series was an apology for that, an apology I accept tf out of.

I found an interesting character in Kamen Rider's Black Sun-Izumi Aoi. She is a teenage activist who is proclaiming Kaijin’s rights to survival. She was originally an optimistic and bright figure before many tragedies happened to her. She is forced to undergo bloody human experience to turn into a Kajin while witnessing her parents brutally killed before her eyes. She sees many of her friends killed before her eyes in horrific ways of death. She has to undergo a lot of battles and kill many lives to save her friends and accomplish important missions. All these experiences are excessively cruel and overwhelming for an adolescent girl to bear. Eventually, she becomes a resilient and determined person while being relentless when fighting enemies and making the right choices. Even witnessing all the cruelties, she still doesn’t lose her original heart for Kajin and humanity’s co-existence. Izumi Aoi is portrayed by a 15-year-old Japanese actress. When filming the character, the actress has to memorize all the aspects of the character’s psychology and perform every detail of the character’s expression. The shift of Aoi’s personality after witnessing so many cruelties has to be smooth and apparent. It’s incredible that an actress possesses a high level of performing talent and performs a complex character well at a young age

Never been a fan of, MATURE THING FOR MATURE ADULT SUCH AS MYSELF because that tends to veer into slapping gore, violence, F words every 5 seconds, and nudity into everything then calling it a day like a lot of the modern slop you can watch on tv/streaming. Flip side is someone trying to make some kind of preachy political drama and boring you to death.
Honestly I think for me the most intense you can make it without just ruining it would be following the tone of something like the yakuza/like a dragon series. It's serious, well written, violent, but it's not just in your face gore, it's got mature themes but no outright nudity, and it knows how to pace itself, have fun, and not take itself too seriously

    • @BerenElendilAPGaming
      @BerenElendilAPGaming Год назад +2

      Reading that got me thinking.
An American-made Hibiki remake, with a heavy focus on Native American culture. Get people like R. Carlos Nakai involved with the music, have traditional crafters on the suit design teams, pull episode plots from traditional stories. Some of the themes that could be explored can borrow from the land-back movements of the modern day... but just saying "they're right and should be given whatever they ask for" doesn't feel like a theme that would work in a Kamen Rider story.
Ask more poignant questions -- what does it mean to be born in a culture that's protected by the descendants of the people who almost killed that culture? How do you carry on with the weight of so many atrocities committed long before you were born? How do you deal with the bitterness and resentment felt by other people, bitterness and resentment at acts committed a century ago, or longer? Most important of all: how should it look to continue on? What might a new era look like? How do you forgive the unforgivable?

I absolutely hate what they did to Hibiki after half of the series, like sure ig you gotta sell by making things more dramatic but it didn’t have to be that way, the whole sword gimmick which doesn’t work with the instrument weapon gimmick that they had in the first half and the cast literally becoming angsty and hating on each other instead of being wholesome and actually interacting like real people and working as a team which was really captured well in Kuuga as well,it’s no wonder that I loved both Kuuga and Hibiki both the protagonist also give that optimism despite going through hell

It wasn't too dark but it was just serious enough and just dark enough that it can be enjoyed when I was a teenager and now again as an adult with the blu-rays.
