For me as an old auto painter I'd have a matte black base, with a small thin glossy marbleized effect design line to break it up, and a very large metal flake silver with a candy green or purple over it.
One thing I would’ve done was to mask off the inside of the head tube and bottom bracket. I’d imagine that getting paint in those areas would mess with things.
Pro tip, For after primer do a mist coat of black spray paint as a guide coat, then use a sanding block for wet and dry. The black will show any low spots or blobs runs etc. Also, cover your work stand, ollie you animal lol
ETOE showed how to do this even how to make the chemical for the crystal effect. Well worth a view also how he holds the frame rather than suspending it where wind can blow the frame against your bike stand damaging the paint you've just laid down. 😉
From a 10 year Auto Painter overall good job, it's nothing to be afraid of, and every mistake CAN be fixed.... One tip I'd say is 3-5 light coats are better than 1-2 heavy coats. You just have less runs to deal with and sanding/prepping for top coats are usually alot easier that way.
I’m chomping at the bit to see the next video. I have that exact frame in my shop and have been trying to figure out what I was going to do with it. You and your team never cease to amaze me!! Thank you for all that you do.
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it. If you want more great tech videos, you should head to GCN+ to watch films like this about the World's rarest bikes 👉 gcn.eu/wrb
I've painted a few frames, and it's always a fun project. I highly recommend for anyone to give it a shot (preferably not with your newest, best, and most expensive frame). Painting a frames, and components, is a wonderful creative outlet.
If you don't want to mess up a bike stand, use a broom handle supported in a (masked) workbench. Tape a bit of old inner tube around the top to provide some friction, then put the head tube over the end of the broom handle to support the frame. You can then easily rotate the frame to get good coverage, and turn it the other way up when required. The frame doesn't swing around in the wind and there's no risk of the cable catching the paint job.
Nice job Ollie 👍🏼 Maybe worth mentioning that you get different types of Primers and when you’re doing steel or aluminum frames you need to use an Etching Primer first so that you get a good bind to the metal.
Love the video. After watching your earlier Cervélo P1 video's I bought one myself and repainted it. This is now the base for my winter bike build project.
As a auto painter I have a few tips - to clean the frame use sprayaway glass cleaner of glass cleaners of that style in a aerosol can - you can sand the frame down with 180 then come back with 320 sand paper to get the 180 scratches out then you can scotch it the primer will fill the 320 scratches I’d put 3 coats on when you go to sand the frame you can lightly spray some other color paint on the prime so you’ll know when it’s all evenly sanded you can use 600 sand paper to do it the base will fill a 600 scratch 2-3 coats of base or until frame covered (obviously if you are doing different colors for effects like this you can do as many coats as needed) then 2-3 coats of clear depending on what kind of clear you are using can do as many as 5 id recommend a 2k clear with harder you can buy that in a can also tape off your bottom bracket by making a flower look with tape sticking it in the frame and having some stick out all the way around then fold it up together and put a piece of tape to hold it together also would hang it from the head tube lol
Can’t wait to see part 2! Last time I remember Ollie mentioning the ice effect paint job I recall he said it was achieved by using urea on the paint… hopefully the DIY one doesn’t 😂
Mask off threads, and bearing surfaces. Use panel wife before EVERY coat of paint. Spraying outside greatly increases the chances of dust and insects getting into the paint, use a tack cloth as well before each coat.
Ollie's PhD wasn't very helpful here! (jk) ! First of all the mask, you used is for dust ! The fumes, or as more people know it the smell, do harmful stuff to your lungs and this mask does absolutely nothing! Secondly when you get the frame out of the sandblasting you DONT touch it with bare hands ! Because most people don't even gonna degrease it that's why I mention it (DIY project) ! As far as primer goes you can paint outside it will be sanded anyway! Make sure your spray bottle is always vertical and remind yourself that the pressure inside it drops as you paint (not good) that's why pros have an air compressor with an air tank! Also bearing races and bottom bracket should be covered! I don't know anything about the painting method you are using but outside still needs a lot more preparation than our example here! Anyway since it's DIY no worries!
Very cool. Important things to add, mask off any area that take bearings and any screw threads. AND USE A CORRECT RESPIRATOR - NOT A DUST MASK! Please look after your lungs, and VOC's are nasty things.
The guy who blasted it had bare hands too. I don't know why this is a problem but maybe he cleaned off whatever harmful thing was on the frame before the handover scene was shot.
@@Xune2000 The oils on your hands will penetrate into the freshly blasted aluminum. This can affect how well paint adheres and can lead to defects in the paint job. Gloves are cheap. Parcel paper is cheap.
@@Xune2000 A lot of blasting isn't paint related, a lot of coatings don't mind a little contamination (Rustolium, Krylon, etc are really hard to screw up, but they also are very limited in the quality of the finish), so it's easy for a blaster to get complacent if the customer doesn't specifically mention it. But doing a specialty coating like this, Ya you want to take every precaution because often specialty coatings will run if you so much as look at them funny.
Olli Schoolboy error Aluminium Oxide paper Oakley Abrasives made Glass Paper incorrectly called sand paper. You use Etch Primer on Aluminium rather than a standard primer. This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
What design would do if you custom painted a frame?
For me? Any design would do!
Just make sure not to go paintless, Alex!
How to custom paint a bike helmet, unlike the frame there is plastic
Highlighter pink with the marbling effect like the early 90s Trek bikes. I’d fit it out with the vintage logos and everything
