I've just got mine done like a month ago - simple white with black graphics I've designed myself. What I've realized through the process though is that a custom paint job is like a tatoo in some way - I have had so many ideas and wanted almost half of them on the frame but then it dawned od me - this is really going to stay on the bike for ever (because I won't sell it obviously) so it has to be timeless, futureproof and simple. "less is more" worked for me in that case. I'm super happy.
It's not interesting, but I want to refurbish my 2001 Pinarello. All the transfers have washed off, so I want to put it back to it's former glory! Also planning to bring all the components into the modern era. All the aluminium parts in yellow, the carbon parts in black (or left unpainted as now). Satin finish. Modern Pinarello logos (assuming I can get permission) and two names on the top tube. My grandad's and mine.
The level of professionalism in this video is awesome! The craftsmanship of the painter, but also the presenting and definitely the filming and editing. Thanks for this super entertaining video!
As an ex spray painter and someone who still does airbrush work this is great to see. Most people have no concept of the labour intensive process this is. Like the sign says... "good work ain't cheap, cheapo work ain't good" Great video.
Absolutely - I'm a boatbuilder and only do a little bit of spraying (mostly rolling and tipping). "A week! To do that!". "Yep, 5 days of sanding, 2 days of painting". Ergh.
I love how olli is obviously super impressed and just loves every second of the process. So did I, a beautiful video and an incredibly beautiful paint job!
This is incredible! I have been doing stuff like this for years, almost 10 now. Painting bikes for friends, changing my bike's appearance several times a year, using stencils, paper, gold leaf, hand polishing to a raw, mirror finish, cold blueing, termochromatic stem that is gold in summer and black in winter, etc. I would love to be able to work with a great lad like Rob, shame that Germany does not have many people interested in stuff like this.
While I'm not terribly impressed by the white Genesis paint job, the paint job on the stem is absolutely superb! The most beautiful I've seen in My entire life. Chapeau! I'd love to have My bikes painted like that if I could afford that. I also love Trek's Purple Flip (which looks quite similar to the stern paint job), the Trek Project One paint jobs, Specialized Satin Oil paint job and a few others. The paint job (along with internal cable routing, smooth by the standards of the time welds) was among the greatest assets of Klein bikes before Trek bought them. A beautiful paint job, no question. The beautiful gradient purple, the fine light accents, the logos, the lacquer - a beautiful job, indeed!
@@666bluegreen The addition of graphics does not make powder coating that much more money. Last time I got a frame sprayed it was £85. The last time I gto a frame wet spayed, pretty sure it was under £150
Just had my R3 custom painted, as a disabled vet it had to reflect that. did in black/ tan with my medals on the crossbar and "Caution Disable Veteran in the head tube. Love it highly recommend adding the personal touch
About a year ago I watched a vlog by a guy who looked suspiciously like Ollie with a super white stem on his dark coloured bike - I'm just glad you won't have that issue; this stem is a beauty!
What a quality video, really interesting & great to see a really talented fella at work, have to say I think the timescale & price of the work is great value considering what you get 👌🏼
This was surprisingly interesting. I’d never really considered a custom paint job but now am very interested in getting one. Watching and listening to someone who really knows what they’re on about is a rare privilege. I didn’t mean, Ollie, by the way.
What Gareth Bingham said . absolutely awesome to see this work and I personally feel that it's money well spent for such skilled high quality work .if I was ever to build up something special I'd give this company my serious consideration.
That's the "stem de la stem"! Amazing craftsmanship, I thought I might get the $4000 SRAM electronic groupset you reviewed if I win the lottery but sod that, this custom painting is way more cool!
Loved this episode. Ollie, nice job. You created a good conversational tone that left room for explaining the process and revealing the artistry. Would I like a custom frame? Yes. I’ve added custom frame to an already very long list of wants. ...Self-evaluation, over due.
Oh My Froomey! Those custom painted bike looks cool, sexy and hyper nice! Also, the process of custom painting is so fascinating. Chapeau to Ollie and Rob.
This is so cool, I'm so glad you guys cover such topics, I'm hoping to do some hobby painting myself, not at this level of course. Thank you GCN, this kind of stuff Butters my toast.
Lol yes this is crazy...the process is time consuming! Love this guys art work! Congratulations on the GCN stem! Very cool to see behind the scenes......cheers!
Great video, very interesting, well shot, above average audio quality, relevant topic. Now I need a custom paint job on my bike. I often wonder what kind of people give video content like this a thumbs down.
I haven't got a custom painted bike, but I do have a custom made stem that looks like a lattice. It was metal sintered from titanium powder and together with coating in matt black cost me 800 Euros (was going to be 500 initially, but in the mean time it was being designed in CAD, the price of sintering went up). But nobody else in the world has another one like mine :D.
Considering most people probably only change bikes out of boredom, the idea of a custom respray seems v appealing. Cheaper than buying a whole new bike when the old frame is fine.
Really nice work. Wish I was able to get a bunch of colors in small quantities like that to test this stuff out. Paint is so expensive here and they don't like to sell small quantities.
The very first bike I bought with my saved lunch money was a custom made steel frame with custom paint job and Record-C. Haven't ridden it in years, but I can't get rid of it because, you know, first love and everything :) Builder told me years later that they don't do those specific paint jobs anymore because it takes too much time. When the snow melts I should take it out for a quick picture for the GCN vault.
Have you got a custom painted bike? Or what would you design?

I’ve got a custom painted BMC Granfondo RBX and a custom painted BMC Timemachine Road 01 on the way!
I had my Specialized S-Works SL-1 custom painted an interesting black with silver speckles by Velo Colour of Canada.
...my buddy painted his own bike & it came out great! it all comes down to prepping

Thanks Pim! We certainly enjoyed ourselves making it.
A very skilled down-to-earth guy. Thanks for sharing.
These are my favourite type of content. I love custom bike stuff and I admire the love-to-detail handcraft involved.
It's fascinating isn't it!
@@gcntech Yes but now u need a set of Gold Titanium bolts

Or, to say the same thing another way: Speed costs money. How fast do you want to spend?
@@surlyogre1476 lol... I like that!
I painted one of my old bikes. Knocked it back, base colour, one plain colour, and then lacquer. Even that took a lot of work.

Spoke to this guy for a good half hour at Bespoked last year, his knowledge and expertise is truly incredible

Interesting... Can you do pain jobs similar to what the man did on the stem? May I enquire how much you charge per bike? Thank you.

Reasonable prices considering the work involved
That's actually pretty cheap for that quality of work.
Surprised how affordable it is
agreed. though the powdercoating price was x2 maybe x3 what Ive paid in the past.
I think he was say the powder coat price with some graphics (like logos)

Rob is not only a gifted craftsman, he is an articulate representative for his studio. Well done. Makes me want to get a custom paint job.
considering the cost of the new etap 12sp, this is the far better upgrade
