Okay, I did this and was having issues with the effects paint beading up when applied to the frame.. I then tried it with dish soap and it worked, but the crystals weren't large enough for me. So, I tried it again. Don't forget to shake the ox gall! I thought I had a bad batch when I tried to coat the frame with a 2% ox gall/water mixture and it beaded again but then accidentally knocked the bottle of ox gall over when I went to reach for it for a second batch and noticed it started foaming. Gave it a quick shake, added it to the mixture and it worked like a charm. Thanks, Martin! My friend is going to love the amazing paint job!
Did you use the same ratios as in he video? I am trying it now but it’s not quite working the same. I tried the dish soap and that helped with the beading, but with or without the soap I couldn’t get the crystals to grow enough.
@@ChronoCard thanks! It wasn’t working on my painted frame, but the metal spoon I was using to mix it had crystals growing. I believe the surface wasn’t optimal for the crystals.
@@ReyciclismoMTB Since it's just urea dissolved in water, as long as the container is sealable, I think it can last for a while. There are companies selling crystal effects "paint" out there.
Your videos gave me the confidence, as well as the vital tips to do my own frame paint using spray cans. I learned that you must take the time to follow the steps properly, especially the on the frame preparation, and to spend the extra money on a 2K clear coat. Your work is incredible, and thanks for sharing! 👍😁
***For those having trouble getting this to work*** Using this recipe I was unable to get the mixture to coat the surface without beading. Doing a bunch of research I saw alcohol has a much lower surface tension than water. I lightly heated a 1to1 mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol and urea in a pot while stirring (stinks) and removed from heat then added a little distilled water until the urea had dissolved. Added to spray bottle or bowl and use a foam brush to apply by saturating the end and rub over surface. Step back and watch crystals grow.
In addition to the above I can gladly mention that I now have the annoying beading under control. Tried everything from changing the sanding, changing the urea mixture ratio, adding more ox gall, changing the degreasing, changing the temperature, changing the cloths and spunges and...nothing made it work properly. Now it appears the ox gall doesn't work that good for some reason. It all has to do with the surface tension of the water/urea mixture because when I added a few drops of the strong cleaner/degreaser with the name Dasty (the Dutch viewers will know now) it "magically" worked all of a sudden. No beading anymore on my test tube so now the bike is next!!
Thanks. I have used 70% Isopr. Alcohol indtead of the Water 1:1 and heated it a little bit to solve the urea. If its not solving judt add a tony bit more distilled water. Soak a big paper towel in that mixture and very quickly soak the frame with it. You have to be quick because the alcohol evapored quickly.
So glad I found your channel, a lot to learn from you! Thank you for all the lessons you teach, for free. Ignore the annoying herd of people that cannot do a simple Google search themselves for a product they need. You do amazing work my friend. Greetings from Holland.
Once again, thanks for the inspiring video! I am really starting to think that the crystal FX paint is the way to go on the rear suspension of my '94 Cannondale Super V project. I painted it an another bike after being inspired by your other videos. The end results were decent but I want to fix some mistakes I made ( On the Super V it is tiny thumbprint left in the 2K clear coat that wasn't quite completely cured when I moved the bike off the paint stand) and the second reason I want to repaint the bike is to challenge myself more. FYI, I also attempted the crackle finish paint job on my '94 Cannondale Delta V.. I couldn't get the crackle to work the way I wanted, so I got busy and sanded down the bike again and repainted it a Acid Green to Titanium Metallic fade. Thank you for the inspiration to get my creative ideas going.

I've painted 2 frames, the first with 2k clearcoat the second with 1k clearcoat. after just assembling the bikes the 1k clearcoat already had some scratches on it. after 1 riding season the 1k clearcoat chipped on multiple spots. buy the paint as cheap as possible but just make sure to use a quality clearcoat.
I have to say that the 1k probably has a longer cure time since it's formulated to be all-in-one, whereas a 2k is hardener and paint and they mix and flash quickly and cure very quickly and become very hard. The 1k will in theory take much longer to cure to full hardness.
Love to see this with a glow in the dark with the crystal effect if possible. Maybe a glow in the dark base layer would work, I dunno it might look good.
Today I started shopping for this paint job! Added to my collection of Montana Gold. I have to wait to get the Candy colors but found a local supply (in the new year after our Christmas break). Another great video! I love how you break it down to a level I can follow. If I wanted to do this, but add the bike logo, could I just mask over the silver base coat with the decal before doing the crystal effects and the black / candy coat finishes. Then remove the decals showing the logo in silver followed by the 2k clear coat?
I absolutely love your videos and they've given me the confidence to paint my carbon frame. I have an S-Works Ready to Paint frameset. The logos are just decals. This is so bad ass. I have a Ibis Mojo HD5 in matte black, I hate black ugly bikes. Now, a black and white crystal effect glossy bike, that sounds amazing. What's the off the hip guess of you doing that for me including cost and shipping from the US? Great video.
I'm curious how this affect would look if the crystal effect was built up in a couple layers. Like, the same process but instead of going to the candy colours, building up a few coats of clear then redoing the urea solution and metallic black again. Would it create more depth in the effect?
Fabulous video and tutorial!! QUESTION: Can I use this same technique on a guitar body?? The guitar is wood but currently is painted from factory. I was thinking I probably just need to follow the exact steps you did, sand it a bit (not penetrating through) carefully clean and on from there. Will that work or will I have a problem because the base material is wood and not carbon fibre or metal??
just unpacked the urea i have purchased and tried it spontaneously. i wonder that no cristalls at all are visible after it dried out, i guess they should go somewhere 😅. its cosmetic quality, so it has to do with that i am gessing. any thoughts on this?
@@ETOE Thank you so much :) My trusty 6 year old MTB is pretty banged up and I am considering giving it a paint job. The one you do in this vid is awesome. But I am going to exercise on another frame first.
Why did the cany color not cover all the cool crystals and everything below it? Was it just your skill in making it a light coat? Is this a difficult aspect to the paint job? Yours looks very even all over, great job.
Always a brilliant job Martin 👍 Question.. I painted my frame as per your instructive clips, paint went in great but when I went to 2k clearcoat gloss, the finish was ok to mediocre.. on parts of the frame the finish was great but on other sections it came out like a matt finish. One can, two types of finish? I am contemplating stripping the frame again, wet sanding and go again with another clearcoat.. what do you think?
@@ETOE because of the issue with lack of gloss, I went over with a second can but to no avail, not a true gloss finish ☹️ From a distance it looks ok and people have liked it but because I sprayed it, I know where the faults are
@@5tanw0rr311 now it’s hardened, go over it with some 800-then 1200 grit wet & dry. Just to level the micro bumps so not to go thru to paint. Then ( or just try) metal polish or a t-cut on a cloth. Wax that and it should be heaps slicker;)
Guys, Spraymax 2k has isocyanate in it, it is attracted to moisture and reacts with skin and eyes while you are spraying. Bit by bit by bit it all adds up and you don't want to test it on yourself for some bike frame pretty color. Need full face and body protection

I'm curious how this affect would look if the crystal effect was built up in a couple layers. Like, the same process but instead of going to the candy colours, building up a few coats of clear then redoing the urea solution and metallic black again. Would it create more depth in the effect?
What would u recommend if u want a ice blue crystal effect 🤔
what a project! absolutelly beautifull! Well done.
Thank you very much!
The color you picked is beautiful the Mat finish is perfect Great job
Great video and great results.
Does the same crystal fx effect and technic work on a aluminium frames?
Yes it does
Amazing!!! awesome!!! beautyful!!! Martin God of Paintings
Thank you! Cheers!
You have to make sure to waterproof the wood before applying any crystal FX solution.
@@ETOE I never thought of that. Thanks!
Do you cover the whole frame yellow before adding red? Or how do you actually make it seem like two colors fading?
Nailed it. Lovely finish.
just unpacked the urea i have purchased and tried it spontaneously. i wonder that no cristalls at all are visible after it dried out, i guess they should go somewhere 😅.
its cosmetic quality, so it has to do with that i am gessing.
any thoughts on this?
Beautiful. How much time in your case did you whait til you aplyed the crystal liquid afther the silver base coat ?
Approx 2 hours
I really like that video the paint job came out sick as hell good work
Hi Martin I am trying to follow this guide, one question do you rub down between the metallic silver and black coats? Love you work btw😄
Nope
Can you tell me how long you waited after silver spray to apply crystal paint?
approx. 2 hours.
This is so RAD!!!! I also have a stumpy chilling in the corner of my shop 🤔
Can i use any type of Urea product?
Thank you for this video.
Seems You a working on a carbon frame.
Will this tutorial work on a alu frame also?
Yes it will
@@ETOE Thank you so much :)
My trusty 6 year old MTB is pretty banged up and I am considering giving it a paint job. The one you do in this vid is awesome.
But I am going to exercise on another frame first.
Me the entire video: Woooooow
I might need to change up the color on my bike again. lol Subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
Amazing work, looks great!
Would Montana gold transparent colors be a good replacement for the candy colors ?
Keep doing your amazing DIY videos !
They are not as vibrant as candy colors.
I wonder how well the crystalls would be visible if I make them on a white background. white primer - chrome - crystalls - white - finish.
Hello Martin, but when you give the polish, because you sand and then give another hand ... Isn't it better wet on wet? Thank you you are strong
I hate to shake hands because most of them are wet on wet.
Amazing 🤩 🤩 I love this. Thank you!! I'm going to try this pattern on my skis
You’re welcome 😊
Why did the cany color not cover all the cool crystals and everything below it? Was it just your skill in making it a light coat? Is this a difficult aspect to the paint job? Yours looks very even all over, great job.
It is transparent.
Always a brilliant job Martin 👍
Question..
Your application is not consistent causing orange peel and a lack of gloss in some spots.
