I think it might work better over another color, like purple or a deep red. This is pretty, but I think it would really *pop* more over something not-black.

I personally think the effect is way too strong. I would go insanely low pigment load, maybe 5 grams of microflake per gallon, and mix in some nice black pearl to darken it, to spread out the flake more, to fully get the galaxy effect. You could try this on a speed shape, just to see how it would look.

    • @P.Subaeruginosa
      @P.Subaeruginosa 3 месяца назад +1

Unfortunately it's not really how it works, you can't really mix the fluid and the flakes perfectly unless you fill it up, you would end up with all the flake in the bottom of the paint and the top would be straight paint. It essentially needs to be filled, instead you would have to mix black matt flakes which again may not spread evenly with the holographic ones its luck at that point

  • @Marky-j3o

The more flake you add the lighter it makes the paint because you have more reflective surfaces.
I think you shouldn’t have added the last 2 bags. It would have given you more dark space in between the flakes giving a better “Galaxy” effect.

As a professional auto painter with 40 years experience I would call it an experiment. The biggest issue is the spray gun that uses old HVLP technologies to spray a car . That type of spray gun came out in the early 1990's that was introduced by 3M. It was a green plastic gun and hose and we called it the garden hose. I tried it once and is sucks. It sprays the paint like a house paint system and globs it on to the panel with out enough atomization to break up the paint into a finer pattern. I painted many street and show cars and motorcycles and would have not let it go looking like that. It needed to be color sanded and at least 2 - 3 coats of clear put on it. Then color sanded and buffed.

I can see that there is a lot of color reflecting off the flake, and overall I like the spectrum of colors its giving off. My question is that if you maybe would have used less, like maybe 1 bag/gallon, allowing the flakes to lay flat on the surface and ultimately not atop each other to give a more uniform color refraction, and then apply more layers for more coverage, then maybe the colors would be more like a color change chameleon effect, as opposed to the full color spectrum reflections at the same time?!?

This would be a 2 for me, solely because the flake is too dense. The thing about galaxies is they're mostly empty space, so the effect you were getting at first where the stir stick was mostly visible was on the right track. You just had to remember that the transparency would be filled by the black base. That said, I don't think I'd have even liked it that much then because it was more colorful than I'd have wanted, but definitely worth the experiment.

It looks nice based on the pigment of the flake and has a color of blackish tone to it. I think if you brought in like a pearl that has blue or purple and add a dark cloud of sprinkles on top to darken it up. That kind of be cool.

I would love to see this at nighttime, with city lights, maybe the sparkles comes out better. I mean, i see it with the nailgloss i have, some of it looks better at night with the lights shining over it. Btw, i ❤ sparkles and this combination with the M3, beautiful!🥰

I'd love to see this over a dark blue or purple base. Could definitely benefit from some clearcoat to give depth and kill the texture, but looks great. Also, why is the roof of the car always masked off when you start spraying? (4/5)

I would have mixed it thinner. I once read a sci-fi story where a ship intended for special operations had, among other things, a top layer of paint meant to be visually indistinguishable from the stars behind it. I was hoping to see that, even the really weak mix of just one bag might have had that effect over the black base.

    4. I like the subtle effect of this one. Certain angles the car just looks black, but then you catch the glimmer of colours from the flake. Nice.

Alittle heavy on the pigment load I’ll give it a solid 2 compared to others you’ve done I think this would go great as a wheel or trim on a black 4.0 car with maybe some accent graphic designs

I saw something similar way back in the 80’s, the flake wasn’t as intense as you have.
Devilbiss did a special paint cup for the old JGA suction gun, just for painting flake, it had a flapper inside that would agitate the flake, I have a NOS one somewhere.
Alternatively, chuck some 3/8 bearings into the bottom of the cup, it helps to stir up the flake like a rattle can.

I wonder how much of the loss of color was from spraying it black on black? I'd be interested to see it on acid green, deep purple, dark red, or dark blue. It seems like the mica, at the concentration you sprayed, would mostly cover the base but there would be some bleed through and that's what i would be interested in seeing.

Put a marble in your cup , that keeps everything mixed as you spray that takes care of that problem! Now what I would do is blook it out with 1000 grit wet or dry paper then buff % polish it, then hand rub it to glass finish!

I know absolutely nothing about doing this type of work, however, looking at the end result I believe that the reason it looks more sparkly is due to the amount of flakes that we used. When I look at the end result it looks to me as if there are a lot more holographic flakes (i.e. a denser quantity of flakes). To get the effect that the company has possibly reduce the amount of flakes. Overall, though, I think it looks great.

  • @jackskellington6sic6

That is still super wicked. Though definitely would like to see a lower density of it over a darker black

not bad for something spread over a thin surface layer rather than used suspended in a gel/acrylic 3-6mm thick

  • @johnwillis4706
    @johnwillis4706 Год назад

I personally think you could have left out the final 20 grams of flake and it would have been better. Also, the surface looks like it has sand in it. About three or five coats of straight clear is needed to level the surface. I just flaked my Onyx black 33 Ford Opera coupe, three coats of flake and 5 coats of clear on top of it. It shines like new money, is smooth as glass and looks three feet deep. I'll give this a 3.

  • @thomaskelly3503

I think if the flakes were buried under a few more coats of clear it would better match the supplier,s intent, because it appears that the flake edges are creating angle reflections due to the projections of the edge creating bumps, it tends to obscure a flat reflection - looks like metal flake paint job before the final coats of clear are applied and buffed out. just my thoughts.

I give it a 2.5 because the end result looks textured rather than spacey. Too much pigment in the mix, I think. More of the black base coat should show through. Just my $0.02. Great videos.

I'm no painter so what do I know but I think a chemistry mixing thing would help you guys out. You know, you put a magnet 🧲 into the jar and put it on a metal plate. It will magically spin & mix the paint constantly. I think they must make portable ones. We are in the Internet age. I'm sure they make one for painting.

I vote a 3. Like some other comments say, the consistency of the flakes is very high and a bit to much. But the pigment itself self is very nice. Would be nicer if the black was darker like you had mentioned. The website picture of the black would have been GREAT

  • @j.4941

I really had no idea what to expect in this case.
It’s interesting - from a far it seems to be hardly noticeable. From closeup it’s nice that it’s so much more flaked than I had expected („sparkle per Square cm“). But frankly, for a „space“ or „galaxy“ look it would have needed to to be fewer but bigger sparkles.
    What do I think?
    Hard to say.
Initially (photo from website) I loved the idea. But would I buy this now, after seeing it? No idea.

3 points at best. It is almost looking like matte with so much pigment. IMHO a clear layer on top of it may fix it and also restore the surface for a longer run.

Nicely done guys! Pros. But yeah (2) 10oz would be the max on pigment. The translucent flakes are a little much on the eyes. Looks like a 1 acre live concert (view from the GoodYear BLIMP) with all the little heads bouncing around. Looks like that.

Try doing a more 3D technique by doing one coat flake and 2-3 layers of clear then repeat at least 3-5 times… it will give the vehicle’s look more galactic depth 💯
