Thanks Martin for this Video, it's great to hear you critique another painter. I know that Kandy paint is expensive and the effect paint for the lettering and the clearcoat are good quality and cost a lot too. I don't understand why the frame wasn't prepared by sanding (Sandra) or blasting, first? I was taught that *PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING* and a clean bare frame without the derailleur hanger and badge on the head tube would have made a better foundation for an excellent paint job instead of an average paint job. Many thin coats are better than one or two thick coats, it is easier for the solvents to flash off and you achieve better depth of colour. The other thing that I noticed was no sanding pad when he was sanding the clear. It's easy to leave "finger ridges" if you don't use a sanding pad. Thanks again, Martin. 👍✌

i actually love the paintjob by tukang amplas. after seeing this react, i do agree that there were missed steps from him. but the result of his job is still the best in the city!
of course theres a big difference in quality and did you mention how BIG the difference of talent fee compare to a backyard painter in 3rd world countries... if their clients can afford your rates maybe then they can make it more professionaly the right way...
A lot of professional painters will tell you not to strip the substrate completely. In a lot of cases you only need to sand to remove any glaze. ETOE probably removes all the paint because he is also trying to factor in weight. Paint can add a fair amount of weight to a frame.
If the bike is build up again by a bike shop. They can face the brake mounts again. So it doesn't have to be an issue. Most frames from the factory need a facing anyway.
Can you please let me know where can i get the masking stickers, or else any sticker cutting file you have for all the parts so that i can cut it myself :)
Please always remove the original paintjob. I can´t understand not doing like that. I am not a professional, I just did only one bike in my life with the help of a car painter and the hardest steps were sanding and masking. I am amazed with your job!
The treks use the seat mast that goes over , not inside, you can see where it stops at the beginning of the video , it's bare carbon and the carbon mast goes over it , there is no other way to mount the seat post or in this case mast , it might even not be able to fit becuase of the piant increasing the diameter of the mast , so it's going to get destroyed or fused and stuck ,when the client puts his mast on, or at least have to use some magic lube , very sloppy , the painter must study the factory techniques, usually you just add weight when doing a diy job 😉
I did something similar but I didnt use the candy color, thought I like the silver black combo LOL That was the first time painting a bike frame, results are alright but far from perfect. Good tips Martin, keep it up
Grüße ruclips.net/video/cOMdepGSwrg/видео.html
You have three iwata spray Guns dedicated for primer base or clear, a car size spray booth with downwards air flow and heating system, a workshop to work in, and a top notch plotter for your stencils. He's using what looks like a cheap touch up gun for everything, with no or very little equipment and spraying in his backyard, and still getting pretty impressive results
I build the paint booth myself spending 3 month of welding 2 tons of metal plates. Started 20 years ago with zero money and a credit to pay my studies. Do you think somebody came and gave meall these things? I started in a shed smaller than your bathroom.
That’s because Martin is a pro. I’m sure there was a time when he had one gun and changed tips to spray different material, but as you grow you buy tools to make your output better. Don’t hate on him for having the right gear
I am a Master dental technician that has practiced his craft for over 50 years and I love it when a master such as yourself shows such a high level of perfectionism! Hopefully this young painter sees this video and refines his skills by paying attention to your suggestions. Some people will say that you are hyper picky of this paint job but what you’ve showed if the difference in a truly “PRO” paint job and a “good” paint job! This young painter may turn in to a great painter some day but he isn’t there quite yet! The difference between “good” and “exceptional” may only be that last 10% that we put into our project but that is what will demand a 100% or 200% increase in our fee and for those that demand excellence it is worth every penny! Great tutorial and very gracious of you to share your experience!
Hi Martin, i’m using Oramask to cut out the desired logo and applied on frame, then I use airbrush to spray. However, every time when I remove oramask, some paint will be removed together with the oramask. Then I need to repair the logo again by spraying and masking. Do you have solution for this? Highly appreciated
I have a question Martin, what can I do if I want a raw finish on my frame? Planning to strip the old paint by a chemical paint remover and scrub it using sandpapers for finer touch. Any recommendations? Cheers from the Philippines.
Thanks Martin for your great videos. Can you do one with using clear coats from cans. A lot of us will probably want to paint our bike, but not invest in the equipment , and will only have access to off the shelf cans . How can we make the most of what's available ? thanks

Good lord, 2 component clear coat without protective equipment and a high CFM fan?? This is cancer in a (spray) booth! Also I would note Martin, although you are of course correct that flattening the gap between the decal and the colour is important and professional, it is incredible how many factory paint jobs fresh from the bike shop have a big gap between the decal and the colour.
Customers don`t care about safety and cancer. What they care about is the price. And to be fair risking cancer is much ceaper for the client and that is what counts if you want to get bussy.
Yes, you have to wait for it to dry. For most clears that’s 4 hours or so. Good to have multiple projects going so you can fill the time in between….usually playing with wet sandra
@@chimdegu that’s a tough one….I guess you could lay out a few coats (with a little time in between, whatever the product recommends) and then come back and sand it flat (it’ll be rough with no sanding between. Then you’d need a fresh can to lay down the final coat after sanding

Also, a lot of it is just time/effort and attention to detail. Sandpaper is not expensive.

In my experiencie use a white primer it is better covering of the black paint,(faster, less paint, and better contrast to do a much better cover).
