This movie and 2004 as a whole have a special place in my heart. The movie, in spite of its flaws, really conveyed this feeling of the "circle of life", learning from defeats and, most importantly, passing down the torch to the next "generation". As Turaga Vakama states:"And so it was, as it is. Matoran into Toa, Toa into Turaga, Turaga into legend. Remembering deeds past and bringing hope to the future. United in Duty. Bound in Destiny." It's a perfect sum of what Bionicle's story and storytelling really meant to me. I always tear up a bit both here in the ending and when Lhikan gives his power and turns them into Toa. The message of this rite of passage still resonates deeply within me to this day. Also, the Toa Metru are way more interesting too: while the Mata were literally built and were meant to be Toa from the very beginning, Vakama and his pals had to learn it the hard way (and so would do the Inika as well). Last but not least: the soundtrack is even better this time, it's sooo well done!
2004 also had fascinating worldbuilding. TRULY fascinating. Like we'd never seen before. The whole thing with protodermis being everything, and the fact you can take raw liquid water protodermis, purify it by rapidly heating and cooling it a bunch of times, then superheat it and it just TURNS INTO MOLTEN METALLIC PROTODERMIS. WTF. Protodermic science is AWESOME! Also, when watching the movie for the first time, you really do think Turaga Dume is working with Teridax for the longest time until they find the original Dume in the pod. Then, afterwards, you wonder wtf is going on. Is it another minion of the Makuta's? And only briefly after the true revelation is revealed. They don't waste time in-between that clue and the revelation, and I love that.
The Makuta’s plan was to use the Mask of Time to speed up the process of the Matoran spheres wiping the Matoran’s minds, so he can let them out really quickly and lie to them and make them believe he’s their great leader.
He makes a great point about how confusing this film in particular is. An how tonally it's off. The high concept nature of Bionicle definitely is a big part of it's appeal but it's also it's biggest weakness. There's only so far you can go until things start to effect the narrative. I think this is something Greg tried to improve upon in 2009 with the soft reboot.
I disagree. WoS is confusing and tonally off. This one isn't. But I love WoS for it somehow. And nah, its biggest weakness is not being high concept or convoluted. It's the fact that the story was told across so many mediums, many of which weren't even available in many countries. Not even Denmark got any of the books, or most of the comics. Or the online games. You'd have to play those in English. Same with the serials.
@@HueyHolmes This is a misconception. Greg Farshtey has never, at any point in time, been the leader of the BIONICLE story team. Not even in the later years. He did have more influence during BM than before BM, but he wasn't the leader if that is what you think.
damn, great video. A shame these movies are confusing, but then again bionicle had a lot of content and was probably really hard to put it all in a 90minute movie.
The movies are a bit confusing but that’s what happens when you make a series spread out different media and don’t communicate. For example, the Toa Metru are shown changing into Turaga but that’s not supposed to happen until *after* the Visorak story arcs and when they made the movie of that arc the books had a different storyline. It’s a fleshed our series overall but there are some hiccups.
These movies should be watched in the form of the BIONICLE Animation Archives' supercut. At least when it comes to chronology. It'll make it make more sense thart way. I am sure Toatapio Nuva also has a good version with comics that help bridge LoMN with MoL better so you KNOW it's a prequel. BIONICLE Animation Archive's version makes it clear that WoS takes place in-between the defeat of the Makuta - Teridax - and LoMN's ending with the Turaga transformations though. With the Toatapio Nuva version you'd also know why they didn't use elemental powers, though, as them using their elemental energy up was literally in those comics. Damnit, BIONICLE's weakness was truly how it was spread across SO many mediums, jumping between them all the time...
Metru Nui has always been my favorite. I used to own it on VHS and watch it constantly. Then, I would rent it on DVD at Blockbuster. Even though the Toa Mata is my favorite team, Toa Lhikan is still my favorite toa. I hope they expand the Toa Mangai in G3.

The reverse of the Snydercut, They show the future but it's happy lmao so true
I always liked Makuta in this movie more because of the whole Palpatine they have going on with him!

Legends of metru nui has the best soundtrack of the Bionicle movies imo

@Katie Lewis Doesn't refute anything I've said as Bara Magna is credited to Greg specifically.

Animation and CGI quality is definitely better here than MoL.
