Hey friends! Quiet Luxury: I’ve had so many of you asking for a video on this, so here goes!
I love quiet luxury for its core values of buying less and buying well. But I’ve seen it linked to “old money styling”, does that make this trend distasteful? Let me know what you think!!xx

Yes, I agree with you, Quiet Luxury to me is about curating your wardrobe over the years instead of just buying into every trend that turns up. And being mindful about the quality of the fabrics, how well the style and the cut suit you, how the colours and prints all work together.
My English grandmother very much had this mindset about clothes, and it was probably common among older generations, they didn't have today's insanely fast fashion cycle.
I also agree this has something to do with the economic situation. When you look at the 2000s, logos and Juicy Couture were really big, yet after the banking crash, trends toned down, Juicy Couture all but disappeared and Celine was in everybody's fantasies. And just as history repeats itself, so does fashion...

  • @ErikaBardere
    @ErikaBardere Год назад +145

I definitely agree that "quiet luxury" is just a name for something that's always existed.
I believe that those who have a very high status will just lean towards brands/items that the 'masses of the trend' wouldn't know or be able to afford. So, you'll have this trendy "quiet luxury" & then you'll have "ultra quiet luxury" which will make "quiet luxury" look not very quiet, but actually pretty obvious that it's an objective. People won't want to look like they're "trying" & they'll just go back to whatever else.
If the game is going to be classist or elitist, the elite will always win, because they are who others are emulating.
Which is why regardless of logo inclusion, appearances alone will never make you a part of a community if you can not relate to it.

Same with jewelry and makeup. I just like what I like and know what suits me. I’ve gotten lots of compliments throughout the decades, but not once heard “you look like old money”. However, as Sophie pointed out, we should be spending money on what we personally like. If I buy a very expensive logo-less bag, it is because I prefer that look/style. If I buy a bag with a logo, it is not because of the marketing or because I want other people to know how much money I spent on it!

It’s not “quite luxury” it just simple basics, minimalist and can be achieved with a good eye for quality and you can pick and choose the well made basics from Banana Republic to the Row.

So glad you've brought this up, I've been absolutely cringing about the trend lately because it's insinuating that you're trying to look like a rich person when mid last year it was just a personal goal to build a timeless and sustainable quality wardrobe (to my budget). I've always admired the classic quintessential British style having been raised there all of my young adult life and since I was tired of decluttering unworn/unloved clothes, I got to work on the collection, felt much more put together and in tune with it all. But then the Quiet Luxury happened, so now it's got me wondering if people are thinking I'm trying to look like a WASP when I've always liked that style decades before I've even heard of the term Old Money. Ten years ago while at a hospital waiting room, a senior doctor asked if I was part of the student doctor's group he was going to lecture, I said no but couldn't figure out how he deduced that but then concluded because I had worn a Jack Will's tweed blazer, skinny jeans and knee high boots with a brown leather satchel bag. Your video is on point, it's absolutely your own personal choice when it comes to what you want to wear and how it makes you feel. Personally tailoring with a touch of androgyny is my style.

Logos are aspirational, they are a way to signal "I can afford this" even when the person may be bankrupt, or struggling to save for something that signals a higher personal value to her, that she'll be signalling to those who see her in it that she has money. It's not a trend but rather a lifestyle choice, and a reflection of one's self-esteem. If you can actually afford it, you don't have to signal it, and are free to choose things that are just good quality. Tasteful design lasts forever, as does high quality in materials and workmanship.

I have no issue with anyone purchasing any item within their financial means, but as this trends it is clear that many are living way beyond their means. This truly unfortunate part of this is it seems to be a self esteem thing (to me). Luxury is so many things to so many people, but no one should be eyeball deep in debt to 'appear' wealthy or living in luxury. I value the information you share regarding well made items that one can have and wear for many years. Textiles are filling are landfills at startling rates and encouraging people to focus on fewer, well made items is important. Understanding that not everyone can afford all things, but the process of educating and focusing on 'quality' may help to re-focus. Finally, thank you for not always trying to 'sell' something rather offering options.

I agree with you that it’s strange that this is a trend, seems more like a reaction to the very oversized logos that have been popular. I have always loved Bottega Veneta bags and they don’t have logos, but honestly I would buy them with or without a logo, it’s their beautiful woven leather that I love. I would also say that I gravitate toward brands that are known for a certain level of quality in a category- whether they are luxury or not. For instance Patagonia for fleece and down jackets, or Nike for running shoes, Burberry for trench coats, Louis Vuitton for coated canvas bags, etc, there are tons of examples. When you buy these types of things from a brand that has a track record, that has years of experience developing and fine tuning that item, you have a much better chance of getting something that is high quality, that will last. And it can bring you a bit of confidence, knowing you have the appropriate, most useful or best version of something. So, yes it makes sense to just say wear what you love and what you feel good in. But if you are looking for a certain item to add to your wardrobe, and you are not sure where to start, look at brands that have a track record. That’s probably better than looking at what celebrities are wearing or sifting through what’s trending online.

My opinion, wear what you want and if your style is logos and bright colors, who is society to tell you it’s not trendy. Even in the 80’s we had “classic” dressers 😂. For me this "trend" also has something to do with superiority complex issues. I get that luxury items give us status, but some people sorely buy things to feel like they are more than others. And, since currently there are a lot of influencers and so on that are handed luxury items or can afford them, the more elitist that had that mindset of wanting to have luxury brands to feel like they are at the top of the ladder, wanna try to elevate and pretend they are better, hence the "old vs new money" as a way of making them be on top.
I can't care less honestly, I'm not rich, but I work hard to treat myself with things that I love, and I do love fashion and do love the logo and what the houses represent so 😎

Cut the logo off? or leave the item in search for the replacement but without the logo? Or for instance what exactly we should do with things we already have with the logo?😊 I absolutely agree with you that we rightful to wear what we like and no more discussion ❤

Regarding succession - great show. I think you and David would enjoy it. The scene with the bag was more about its large size and how billionaires don’t need to carry around a lot of stuff around with them - for example they don’t need to carry their laptop, a change of shoes or a coat - there was an interview with one of the cast where the stated - you never see a super rich person in a coat their driver drops them right up to every front door. 🤔

I think wearing well made, high quality clothing is timeless and you feel good when you wear it. Maybe not luxury but my maje, Sandro, reiss pieces feel so much nicer to wear and they fit so much better than fast fashion and I think they don’t need a logo how it sits and fits speaks for itself. And a monogram or logo here and there is lovely too - I think it’ll stay this way. But also agree too many logos is a bit noisy, not necessarily fashionable.

Hi Sophie! I think that now this is considered a trend only because everyone talks about it on social media, but in any case this way of dressing has always existed and always will exist, because in addition to representing someone's personal taste, it represents a real style of life. IMO it's true that those who are really "wealthy" and have good taste tend not to buy "mass luxury brands" (which we see everywhere, real or fake). For me, I veered towards this style after the end of the pandemic. I will definitely buy "trendy" items again, but I prefer to focus on the quality of timeless pieces. In addition to the brands you mentioned, I would add Ralph Lauren, Brunello Cucinelli and The Row, and Cos for the high street.

I have avoided logos and bold colors for many years now, so this “trend” is really exciting to me. I agree that there is a place for logos and there always will be. I’m sure I own several items with them as well, but to me, quiet luxury isn’t about looking rich at all but about dressing impeccably in good quality pieces, without attracting all the attention that a person with loud prints, colors, and logos would. It’s that, “if you know, you know” thing, and if you don’t, that’s fine because this aesthetic is not meant to attract all people like a logo would, only a select few that have a similar appreciation for the finer (quiet) things.

Depends on what crew you aspire to be a part of. If old money and class isn't something or a group you care about, do whatever you want.
If you are in situations where that's the set you are trying to integrate into (at work, moved to a new neighborhood, etc), then loud logos are declassified a d have always been. But if that's not your set, it doesn't matter.
That IS the set that I am around, so no loud logos in that group - it's not what they do. They also aren't looking to see what bag I'm carrying either.
It's not about money, it's quality. You can buy a quality item at the thrift - interestingly, where you meet a lot of moneyed people.
Whats happening are some influencers are actually starting to mingle with this set, and they are just sounding the alarm "they arent like that" and signaling.
It just rubs people the wrong way who arent aspiring to those classes, as if they are doing something wrong.

Thank you for this! I think a lot of us can sometimes fall for the allure of logos, but I really feel that the vast majority of us who do own items with logos, have a common philosophy on clothing and handbags and that is that, ultimately, we are searching for well-made, sophisticated, luxurious, and high-quality items at the end of the day. I do love the term, ‘Quiet Luxury’ actually, because it is something that encompasses the desire to have these high-quality items, yet remain humble about them. So for that reason, I do feel like the whole quiet luxury world is essentially owning classic pieces and reducing what we own and leaves no room to be misinterpreted as only existing to look rich. Someone with real class can go to a thrift store and make anything look rich for that matter. 🤭🥰☺️🙌🏼

The truly rich- Manhattan office going CEOs 👩‍💼 / Hampton second home owning / Ivy League educated people, don’t clash prints and logos- their style is more classic, which may give the appearance of toned down quiet luxury. But they do carry one logo piece, like a color pop, except it’s not color. The rich are identified by their composure, how they carry themselves and their speech 🎤 which is far more sophisticated than how they dress. I’m not necessarily talking about finishing school etiquette, but more about class, like when to talk, when not to, and when to maintain a dignified silence 🤫, etc. The character Alison, in John Osbourne’s “look back in anger” is the perfect paragon of quiet luxury. So, just not carrying logos will not do the trick and feels a bit like conning, I’d rather be myself and be proud of who I am, than bend over backwards to emulate wealth. My 2 cents, Amy

At the same time, I do think that it is also a real thing, where you may not know how much money someone has (even if they’re wearing/using something very expensive), because it is subdued without logos/symbols that point to the brand. I believe that people who are ultra wealthy DO have a sense of quiet luxury, but the items they utilize are things you would know only if you know. "New money" people can be rude too. I've met people who look down on others beacuse they have LV bag. I think that the older I get, the classier my style is. But some days I just like to wear flower prints and bold colours.

I've never liked logos but mainly because it's free advertising for the company.

Quiet luxury is just another marketing tactic. People should wear what they want & enjoy it. Thanks for sharing always my lady. ❤️😘😘😘Sandy

The one thing we have is choice. I like the classic look, where the attention is paid to quality over quantity. I will still wear a trend piece, but it compliments - it doesn't take over my style. When you have little money - this is exactly how to buy and when you have a boatload this is exactly how you buy.😊

I think it’s really all subjective. For me I like some logos and I like some understated luxury. It really all depends on what I personally prefer. Love your videos ❤

I love the quiet luxury trend although I dont see it as that. I have always hated the Louis Vuitton print as an example. Quality timeless pieces don't have to be in fashion and the complete antithesis of fast fashion. Plus it seems like everyone has a Chanel or Jacquemus bag here in london. I'm into Aspinal, Mulberry and Polene right now.

Luxury doesn't need to be expensive, by definition. So it would be a simple leather tote bag you could get anywhere. Buying designer is missing the point?

Succession is a very compelling, entertaining show. Quiet luxury isnt remotely new. Something about social media needing to create trends to stay relevant. We have a vlog/blog called WhoWhatWhere and they went all crazy over Hailey Beiber wearing a white cotton headband...the kind I wear to hold my hair back to wash my face ....as cutting edge fashion. Nonsense. Classic elegance....quality materials and impeccable tailoring.

I've been dressing this way for years. Classic capsule style wardrobe. Mix of high-end high street sprinkled with a bit of logo-less luxury. Good quality things that last and avoiding trends. The quiet luxury 'trend' is killing me. I've deliberately tried to avoid trends for years and now I look like I'm following the bloody trend of the minute.

It has been my personal experience, "quiet luxury" has been around forever. I've known older people who practice this...the only difference, it now has a label. Similarly, to quiet quitting...not a new practice, it just hadn't been labeled as such in the past. Just my experience, can't speak to someone else's.
