You can positively punish animals and still be loved and respected by them. And the results are faster, more permanent, and in no-way do you have to be even remotely inhumane to do it. Every time our puppy(12 weeks old) bites we say “OUCH!!” And then we ignore him until he gently apolagizes by either licking the place he bit you at or putting his nose against it. Its sooo cute when he does that!🥰
Yeah I've been trying that on my 9 week old boxer puppy lmao she just starts barking and chewing on shit she shouldn't be lol so then I can't ignore her because I gotta make sure she doesn't destroy my room lol
Thank you. I am the primary person taking care of our dog (she’s only 13wks old, and we have had her since 8wks old) and my husband keeps blaming me for not training her right and saying she’s biting excessively and that it’s not normal. I was so glad to find a video showing a puppy doing exactly what our pup does so I could show him. She is gradually getting better, but it’s only been about 5 weeks since we got her, and my husband apparently expected instant results, so I’m glad you informed us it can take months, and it can last until 5 months, so we don’t have unrealistic expectations. Everything you mention in this video works better than anything else for my girl! Another thing that helps is teaching her a word to associate when we put her in her boring area to calm down, so when she starts biting I use the word and she usually stops because she doesn’t want to go to her boring area (gated off hallway) lol
Im glad you posted this; my partner keeps saying i dont train ours because shes always biting then i turn around to see him razzle her up with his hands!!!!
Same exact situation here. My husband keeps complaining that our 8 wk old bites too much but he rough plays with her and doesn’t do much trainings😑. Hoping these tips help!
I can confirm that giving them tug toys helps a lot. My dog used to be a big biter puppy too. She is super gentle dog now. But when playing rough, she still manages to land a soft bite sometimes. It's almost never painful, but I still correct her behavior by closing my hand around her snoot (she hates it), and staring intently into her eyes, then walking away for a while. She knows she did something wrong.
This has seriously saved and taught me so much about training. I am literally teaching myself how to train my puppy and it has little to do with them, so much as it does starting with me. Thank you
I have a German Shepard and when he bites it hurts a lot, I haven’t drew blood though but he kind of scares me cuz if I like hide my hand or get on the sofa (my dog is only 9 weeks old so he can’t reach me) he barks ;-;
@@lodi7596 I would try and get that under control or corrected because we have a german shepherd too and it only got worse, it really hurts but my dad is so stubborn he won't do anything about it, he always goes about everything in the wrong way and my mom won't do anything because its not her dog so she doesn't want to do anything either. So I'm stuck constantly being bitten by our 8 months old almost 9 month old puppy.
I hope you guys enjoy! Here's a playlist that will show you how to teach your dog the basics in order: ruclips.net/p/PLMssKIjsDxXmMGypWsr8u-yGOUSoPoozb Thanks for subscribing!
We bought our dog a week ago, (golden doodle) and already taught her to not bite; we also taught her to come when called, to sit, to go “down”, and she’s in the middle of learning “roll over”. Here’s how we taught her not to bite. First, hold their mouth closed and say “no bite” or “no biting” in a stern voice. Then introduce a toy for them to bite instead. If they bite the toy, pet them and say “good dog” and reinforce that biting the toy is ok. If they bite you again, growl and say “no biting” more assertively/angrily. If they bite a third time, put them in their cage, once again say “no biting”, throw in a “bad dog no biting” and leave him there for 5 minutes. He/she will whine/whimper but DONT LOOK AT THEM FOR 5 MINS... it hurts bcuz emotionally you feel bad they’re sad but it’s the only effective way they’ll learn. Shock collars DO work, based on studies; but they’re extreme and shouldn’t be used unless all else fails. The key is NEVER TOLERATE THE BITING. If you tolerate it, or if you howl in pain, that actually REWARDS them. Never show pain- dogs like that, it’s instinctive... and they’ll also feel alpha over you. If they bite you, they should only feel negative emotions and isolation if needed, immediately afterward, so that they learn to stop biting.
My parents yells at our 3 months old pup when he bites them. I said "stop yelling at him, he won't understand what you're saying. Yelling at him to stop is like yelling at a baby to stop crying"
My dog is 4, when we first got him at 8 weeks he never bit anyone or chewed anything other than his toys, he’s so laid back. I’m so thankful that I didn’t have to put up with that 😂😅
Your videos are so helpful! You have helped me train the most gentle and obedient maremma sheepdog :) Now my maremma knows how to sit, he doesn’t bite, lay down, high five, fist bump, spin and stay

@@k-world777 my grandad actually did that to my old dog when she peed on the bed He put the face of the dog on the pee and started hitting it with newspaper....I got mad of course, it was a very smol puppy.
The correct "newspaper smack" is to play (engage) with the dog physically, when it bites your hands then grab the jaw or maw and don't let go initially as they try to pull away. (for about a second) That way they don't ever fear being smacked (or grabbed by the jaw) because they never have the conditions in the present in which they were smacked in the past show up because that never happened unless they had their mouth around someone's flesh. Newspaper smacks happen AFTER and the dog CANNOT associate the smacking with the biting. They simply stop biting from withdrawing engagement with the human, making unintelligent people think that ALL positive punishment results in that phenomena, when in fact its just IMPROPER positive punishment.
Lilmintypup Artist & Gamer The puppy is just having fun. Noticed that near the end of the video, Zak holds the pup far enough away that he can't bite his face.
I’ve finally convinced my parents to put out applications to adopt a puppy but they said I need to research and train the puppy, thank god I found this channel ;w;
We recently adopted a new puppy and I feel like I had to learn to train them all over again! Your tips are very realistic and have been helpful so far. I hope to stop my pup from biting soon!

I need serious HELP! My 8 week old pit has started biting EXTREMELY! I have done both techniques both provide her with a toy to bite Instead of my hand but she still tries to go for the hand I even bough her a kong chew toy! I have tried training her like in the video & she listens but still bites! I'm so lost & starting to become frustrated with her biting!
*Linda was always a pet lover. She grew up with cats and dogs, and as an adult she never went a day without one. Her current dog, a German shepherd named Max, was no exception. Linda loved spending time with Max, taking him for walks and playing fetch in the park.* However, there was one problem: Max had a tendency to bite. Linda had tried everything she could think of to stop him, but nothing seemed to work. Finally, she decided to take an online Dog training course. *The course was informative and helpful, and it taught Linda some new techniques for dealing with Max's biting problem. She was excited to put what she had learned into practice.* Within a few weeks, Linda was happy to see that Max's biting had decreased significantly. He was still a playful and friendly dog, but he no longer posed a danger to those around him. Linda was relieved and grateful that she had taken the course. It was clear that it had made a big difference in Max's behavior.
Thank you so much for making these videos for people like me to understand. I have a 6 month old Bernice mountain dog he is a very big bitter. But this has helped me to teach him.
I have a shiba inu that is 1 1/2 years old, which bites a lot. I tried the massage methode, and well... After 30 minutes it actually worked. I'm surprised how fast that went. I'll of course repeat it every day so it gets drilled into his brain, but the methode was so good! Thanks, Zak!
Zak: make sure your puppies have regular access to safe chew toys *looks around my living room and at the box filled with dog toys, then looks at marks on my hands and fingers* Me: I tried that...
It's because sometimes in a situations like that, running away fast from your dog triggers predatory instinct in them and they tend to bite, sometimes even really hard injuring person that had been bitten without dog even knowing it did someting wrong.
We went to Arkansas and my parents surprised us with a papillon her name is Milly. And now we are getting another puppy named milo. These videos are really helpful thank you!!!!!!

+Arpith Prashanth Food aggression is generally guarding behavior. Your puppy is trying to protect something she values. The protocol most people recommend is to walk by the puppy whilst she's eating and drop something better near her bowl as you pass by (something like little pieces of real chicken). Puppy should turn away from her bowl and eat the chicken. Do this a few times until puppy is anticipating the chicken raining from the sky as you approach him (you'll see her head turn BEFORE you drop the chicken). At that point, you can ask for a sit and reward her with the chicken. At that point, you've pretty much changed puppy's mind from fear of you approaching her whilst eating to you approach = chicken comes.
Arpith Prashanth Hello. My advice to you is to ensure you pup understands it's YOUR food and you are letting him have a SHARE. I have 5 dogs. A Saint Bernard, 2 rottweilers and 2 cavapoos. I feed them in the same order every day. First dog in to last dog in. I hold the bowl and the dog is asked to wait. They don't have to sit but they're not food aggressive so I don't need to do this. However your pup is so getting him to lie down first would be great (once he calms after a few days a sit would be fine). Once he's in a down, put your hand out like a stop signal and say wait. Put the bowl down. If pup moves in any way towards the bowl lift it up and start again. When he stops lunging for the bowl tell him to leave it. I accompany this comand with a pointed finger more upright than at them. When pup looks at you or away from the bowl tell him he can get it. Sit with him (don't stand above him). If he growls remove the food and start again. It might be best to practice 'leave it' training before hand. Have a treat in one hand and plenty others to hand. Open your hand and tell pup 'leave it'. When he looks at you or away from the treat reward him with a treat but not the one in your hand. This'll make it easier to teach him leave it when acting negatively around his food. Pup needs to understand you are in charge and pup gets food when he's calm and relaxed, not aggressive. All my dogs have been taught this and I can remove their bowls mid meal if I need to but only for negative behaviour. Please don't remove pup's food regularly just for the sake of it or you'll cause other issues. Hope this helps. Once sorted and confident pup understands I strongly recommend anyone else in your household including children do the same routine so pup also understands the humans are top of the tree. My children 16, 12 and 9 can all feed the dogs or remove their food.
Thank you for helping me through my life with my dog! This channel has helped me and my dog so much! From training to preparing for my dog! You guys are amazing!
My (adult)dog kept nipping me. I started yelping whenever she nipped me and soon she stopped. She was taken from her mother to early so i think she was nipping me because she didn't get to play fight with her siblings and learn that biting hurts people.
Makes more sense then other videos i've tried on youtube. Puppy classes start next week, but will try your technique tomorrow. All others failed with my pup.
You can actually train cats like dogs. Use clicker training. I had 2 cats (brother and sister) that played fetch, gave high fives, meowed on command, sit, sit pretty, and “come here”. When I was working at a dog training facility, I had to learn how to train dogs but didn’t have a dog. Lol! It’s super easy once you know what it is they like as a reward (be it affection with lots of praise and pets, a favorite toy, or a high value treat like tuna).
i was watching a dog documentary and my dog was play biting me so i got distracted and she was so hyper that it hurts my hand. she accidentally clicked this video HAAHAHHAHAHAHAH
Thank you so much for this video! (and all the others!) I'm watching them from France and I love them! The greatest inspiration to help friends with their puppies, helps me to understand many many things!
Sophia Camacho he's became treat smart and has realized that the only time worth listening to you is when you have visibly displayed that you have treats (he's became treat smart, you're essentially now bribing your dog). Start carrying around a few tiny treats or pieces of treats in your back pocket. Randomly request a behavior throughout the day, in a non-distracting environment, and reward when compliance is met. Do this randomly all the time, everywhere, and at every chance you get. Dont let home you have put the treats in your back pocket, and do not pull out a treat until after he does the behavior. He will soon realise that you are more valuable than the distractions, and he'll learn that just because you don't visibly have a treat, that he may still "win" one for listening and engaging with you. :)
@@strikeforcek9149 I've noticed that my puppy was treat smart, so I started making the signs with my hands that I HAD treats and asking her to sit or lay down. And then, when she obeyed, I would go like to give her a treat, let her smell my hands to see there wasn't a treat... then, I'd praise her and give her really exceptional love and attention. Now, I still make the hand signals, and she no longer expects a treat. So when she GETS one, she really loves it. It only took a few days to break the treat smartness.
Play tug and teach him the 'out'/'drop' cue. Get the biting under control and directed at tug and chew toys. I use tug to teach what is and is not a toy to all the dogs I train.
My Doberman puppy keeps biting. She's only two months old. My dad said if she doesn't stop, we're getting rid of her. It's not her fault. My little siblings don't know how to tell her "no" properly. They just run away and cry. What do I do? I don't want her to go somewhere else. She's only a baby. I know, I may sound like a little kid saying this but I burst into tears when he said that he'll get rid of her. We got her to be a guard dog. She doesn't know any better.
Jimin Park I had a similar problem with my new puppy. I've had him for a month so far and if you do these things it will work. I started to teach him how to sit and used dog toys and slowly he began to understand not to bite. It's a little hard but it's worth it
Your family should’ve never gotten a puppy if you’re just going to get rid of him for doing something that all puppies do. I think it’s better to give him away to a better family that will love him regardless of what he does.
The problem is your dad and there is probably nothing you can do to change that. Expecting a puppy not to bite without training is absurd and proves he should not own a dog.
She'll grow out of it as soon as she grows up. Mine grew out of it as soon as she grew. We didn't train her or anything, just yelled no and she stopped biting as she grew. The problem is your dad. Since you can't get rid of him, keep the poor puppy away from him, and when she gets near him, make a loud noise and your puppy will learn to avoid him. He'll regret saying such cruel words once your puppy grows up to be a nice dog
Do you still have the dog?? Take it for hours and hours on walks. Lots of walking. Forms a major bond and when you get home the dog will be too tired to play/bite.

Sounds like hubby needs the training. 😂

Dog: *sees your hands*
Dog: so you have chosen death 👀
This has seriously saved and taught me so much about training. I am literally teaching myself how to train my puppy and it has little to do with them, so much as it does starting with me. Thank you
I agree! These methods are way better than how my dad trained my last 3 dogs

People: sees my wrist. "DO YOU CUT!?!" Me: No my puppy is just the spawn of satin. She thinks my flesh tastes better than her bones we spend $20 on
The day I draw blood and my pup develops a taste for it is the day I start to worry
I have a German Shepard and when he bites it hurts a lot, I haven’t drew blood though but he kind of scares me cuz if I like hide my hand or get on the sofa (my dog is only 9 weeks old so he can’t reach me) he barks ;-;
Satin😂😂
@@lodi7596 Same but I have an pitty
@@lodi7596 I would try and get that under control or corrected because we have a german shepherd too and it only got worse, it really hurts but my dad is so stubborn he won't do anything about it, he always goes about everything in the wrong way and my mom won't do anything because its not her dog so she doesn't want to do anything either. So I'm stuck constantly being bitten by our 8 months old almost 9 month old puppy.

When my puppy started biting i would gently hold her face and just say "no biting". It seemed to get her to focus and stop doing it really quickly. 😂
Lmao i try that but she just ignores me
Show me your ways gran master!
That puppy must have been a year old
My pup just keeps biting me after I hold their face.

If this video was in the 80s he would say “smack it with newspaper”
Lol my Grandad would say that to me, he would be like "hit it with a newspaper" 😂
@@k-world777 my grandad actually did that to my old dog when she peed on the bed
He put the face of the dog on the pee and started hitting it with newspaper....I got mad of course, it was a very smol puppy.
And it worked! Just like a little swat on the behind
The 80s were the best!

*Linda was always a pet lover. She grew up with cats and dogs, and as an adult she never went a day without one. Her current dog, a German shepherd named Max, was no exception. Linda loved spending time with Max, taking him for walks and playing fetch in the park.*
However, there was one problem: Max had a tendency to bite. Linda had tried everything she could think of to stop him, but nothing seemed to work. Finally, she decided to take an online Dog training course.
*The course was informative and helpful, and it taught Linda some new techniques for dealing with Max's biting problem. She was excited to put what she had learned into practice.*
Within a few weeks, Linda was happy to see that Max's biting had decreased significantly. He was still a playful and friendly dog, but he no longer posed a danger to those around him. Linda was relieved and grateful that she had taken the course. It was clear that it had made a big difference in Max's behavior.
Great job, Linda! You're a responsible pet owner and you're doing everything you can to make sure your dog is well-behaved. Keep it up!

hey Zak, I'm having a real problem regarding Food Agression with my puppy who's 4 months old
would you please make a video on it?
thanks a bunch!
Super common. I do address this in my book and I'm sure I'll make a video on it!
Arpith Prashanth the best way to stop yout dog being protective over its food is by playing with it while he eats
i really do try that but the moment I come near her she gets defensive and starts growling
+Arpith Prashanth
Food aggression is generally guarding behavior.

Thank you so much for this video! (and all the others!) I'm watching them from France and I love them! The greatest inspiration to help friends with their puppies, helps me to understand many many things!
My puppy sits on command when we pull out a treat, but when he’s wild he can’t, yet when he’s calm he can sit 😆

Disney Dayz actually it's biting because his teeth are growing and they itch that's why he was biting

I think your video on biting made a lot more sense than others I have watched. I am going to look for you book. Thanks
