    The eloquence, the sharpness of thought and the commitment with which Sir David Attenborough keeps working towards informing, I dare to say even educating his fellow humans is astonishing, admirable, enviable and should be emulated with every opportunity.
    Individually we should contemplate this issues, the role we take in them and consider meaningful actions to participate in the most needed change that ultimately ensure Human existence in a egalitarian and ethical way.
    This Man truly is a Sir.

I am a 70 years old woman, now, but I was very much ahead of my time, and chose not to have children. I was a far thinking, educated woman who thought deeply about matters. I was also brought up Catholic, but,looked at their doctrines rationally and objectively as I entered my late teens. Ironically,usually the women that produce the most children are least able to provide for them and expect the state to pick up the tab!

    The root cause of most of humanities problems is a growing population chasing finite resources, solve that and a huge number of other issues will be resolvable. To not solve this is to ensure all our other problems remain insoluable. Bless sir David for articulating this so well and damn neo-classical economics for denying this problem even exists.

    • @JohnJones-ct9pr
      @JohnJones-ct9pr 4 года назад +1

      @Jacob Zondag Oh nonsense. Name a single resource we are running out of. You can't. because there are'nt any. In the 18 th century the deepest mines went to about 100 metres but then could go no further because of water issues. Then steam loco motives came along and could pump the water , so depths of 180 metres were achieved. Now with advanced mining techniques mines go down to over 4 km's !!!. There are now plans for mining at far greater depths. There is NOTHING we will ever run short of. There is more than enough plutonium in the sea to power an earth with 50 Billion people for 10 000 years !!!. If people don't like plutonium then there is even more thorium on the moon than it would possible to ever use. The biggest thing we are short of is common enough sense to know when pseudo scientists (like Attenborough ) are hyping it up in front of gormless idiots. Half of those pretentious twats in the audience probably believe that the moon landing were faked and that the MMR vaccine causes autism.

    • @JohnJones-ct9pr
      @JohnJones-ct9pr 4 года назад +2

      @Jacob Zondag Concentration of Dy in the Earth's crust is 5.2 mg/kg - you do the math. We only use about 100 tons a year. Uranium occurs in seawater. As it is removed from the seawater it is replaced by leaching into the sea from the underlying rock. Although neodymium is classed as a rare-earth element, it is fairly common, no rarer than cobalt, nickel, or copper, and is widely distributed in the Earth's crust. Lanthanum is the third-most abundant of all the lanthanides, making up 39 mg/kg of the Earth's crust, behind neodymium at 41.5 mg/kg and cerium at 66.5 mg/kg. It is almost three times as abundant as lead in the Earth's crust. Helium does get lost into space but it takes about 100 years to leave the earths atmosphere. It has constantly done so since before life began on earth. 3000 metric tons of helium are generated per year throughout the lithosphere and vast new discoveries of helium have been made. Helium is so cheap and plentiful that the US Strategic reserve sold off ALL of it's helium because they realized that Helium is not 'strategic at all and the USA can produce as much as it needs anytime it wants.

    I stopped worrying about climate change when I realized that population was the real elephant in the room. Until human population decreases there is little chance that ecological disaster can be avoided.
    Another issue that is almost never talked about is that our economic systems and theory is almost entirely designed around increasing growth of the economy. Since population and demographics are the primary drivers of growth, we do not have the economic systems that are designed to deal with decreasing population. That also means, we don't have any political or social systems that can deal with decreasing population.
    These problems will eventually manifest themselves and I hope that some economists and politicians start to think of how they can help manage the birthrate. Humanity needs no lessons on managing the death rate.

      Don't you get it? Huge numbers of people have objections to all methods of birth control. As a pro-lifer, I have many objections to birth control. I believe we should welcome however many children that God gives us, or even all the babies that our bodies want to produce. Like I said, I believe that we should not use precautions against pregnancy, let more human lives come to be. Why should anybody struggle against nature to use awkward birth control, especially if they love children or are at least somewhat okay with the prospect of having a naturally-big family? And isn't it potentially actually nature that is "exploding" our population? Should we whine against what so much benefits us humans?
      Many countries are so much larger in population than they were just decades ago. But it is supposed to be that way. More and more people would be glad to live. Which people are there, that their lives are not important and that they should not matter? There are places all around to put more people. Why do you think so lowly of people? Because of bad fake-science trendy theories? All creatures are not equal. Genesis 1 : 26 clearly says that God gave man dominion over nature and over the other creatures. But why? Because man is so smart? Ha! I think it could have something to do with the sheer numbers that God planned to grow us into. We dominate because we have to. There is just so many of us humans now.
      And what of the OP commenting about how the next-door neighbor's family is just so "exploding" in size? Shouldn't that be a good thing? They are respecting nature by allowing for their natural growth. It is also suggestive that more of us should be similarly growing, well since the world population is growing anyway. Why not also be blessed with precious children? If I have to live in a world with just so many people, then some of those many children in the world ought to be mine. The planet actually *CAN* deal with all of those children. Otherwise, how they did so easily multiply that much? And it sounds like maybe they have objections to birth control, and as a pro-lifer, I very much respect that. I believe it quite okay in this populous time, to continue on enjoying multiplying naturally without any birth control. Actually, growing up in big families better socializes children to survive and thrive in an increasingly populous world.
      So what have you even predicted other than agreeing with the Bible, that this earthly realm is not our forever place?

The problem is the exploding populations in the third world. Africa is set to quadruple in population this century after having already quadrupled in the 20th century. Another problem for civilization is that the most intelligent people in most societies will take this advice on board, but the most backward will keep having children until eventually they are the majority in every country, leading to an ultimate collapse of civilization.

I have a recollection of the Duke of Edinburgh, many years ago, making some derisory comment about people having large families, yet he fathered (at least) 4 kids. If anyone needed to be told about population control, it was him. But the UK always had one law for the rich and another for the less rich.

      @Rad Derry Yes and the greedy minority will continue to be greedy and the majority will continue to suffer from it. As long as the world is filled with a minority that exploits the whole world and consumes way more then the majority, the world is overpopulated. Adding a couple of billions of people on top of the minority is not a good idea.This is extremely unfair but unfortunately that's the nature of the game of life. And it's not about killing anyone, it's about having less children.

      @JC-ko1bp 5 лет назад

      @Rad Derry pathetic. the guys saying have less kids not start killing people. although i can think of more people id want dead than want alive.
      if we had 80% less people like we did a mere 100 years ago, that'd be 80% less car emissions ( im aware not everyone has cars but for this purpose they do), 80% less plane flights, 80% less resources needed, 80% less food needed meaning 80% less methane from cows which people say is a huge contributor to the planets issues, 80% less housing and buildings needed meaning 80% more space for trees and wildlife which suck in CO2 and give out oxygen so therefore 80% less CO2... and thats coupled with the already 80% lower CO2 initially from the 80% less cars and burning of fuels that creates it.
      80% more space available meaning 80% more space to rear our livestock coupled with 80% less mouths to feed meaning we can feed the entire population hassle free on ORGANIC GRASS FED meat meaning far far far far fewer diseases that are caused by eating the hormone filled, antibiotic filled, inflammatory grain fed shit we eat nowadays.
      all animals raised happily and humanely and freely, all killed ethically as we don't need to kill so many (80% less). ample food and resources and space for everyone. 80% less pollution in the air meaning fresher cleaner air for everyone lowering diseases.
      but fuck the planet, im wanna be selfish for a second. i want clean air for me to breathe, organic grass fed food, organically grown vegetables and fruit. i wanna see trees and wildlife and grass and rivers and waterfalls and animals... not these scummy filthy cities filled with smoke, concrete, stupid buildings, a billion cars and enough cunts to keep jeremy kyle in business for the next 10,000 years.
      i wanna be able to travel places and see wild lions, tigers, giraffes, hippos, rhinos etc in huge numbers all thriving, not a few left because we've driven them out of their habitats with our pathetic guns because we're not capable of doing it any other way because we're a weak and feeble species.
      i wanna visit the amazon and see a huge rainforest bustling with exotic wildlife, not half of it cut down so you can have a nice sheet of A4 fucking paper and a wooden chair to sit your pathetic arse on outside your shit house.
      not to mention we have stopped evolving and getting stronger as a species because selective breeding has stopped. species constantly improve through selective breeding where only the strong survive and procreate where the weak don't. now every spastic and mong can breed as many kids as they like, often times the mongs having more and more kids compared to the decent people, leading to a devolution of the species. every disease ridden cretin can have kids nowadays in multiple numbers

    So the number of people is a problem, I agree. I haven’t made it all the way through the video yet, so apologies if this is addressed in the part I haven’t seen, but overpopulation is essentially a symptom of poor economic development. Every country that has elevated to what we would call “developed” status have seen their birth rates drop to replacement or frequently lower than replacement rates. As undeveloped countries become developed and their people’s incomes rise, their birth rates too will fall. We should not focus on population growth rates but treat the underlying issues. Education (especially of women), stability, rule of law and enforcement of property rights (for all, not just the elite or corporations) are all factors that contribute to a nation’s development should be an important focus in reducing humanity’s environmental impact. Not to discount efforts in reducing waste and excess in the developed world.

    As long as there is a monetary system in place, then politicians and corporations of all kinds will always encourage population increases. If you stop procreating, then the politicians open up the flood gates of a people that will.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 6 лет назад

      Oh, but it isn't just about the money. Think about it. People who keep procreating, are busy raising their families, and working jobs to support their families, leaving them little time or energy to protest and upset the government. Also, procreative sex feels very good, and I think even many politicians enjoy it. I mean many people do want the good for people, and do not just want to crush people underneath the yoke of economic slavery. Even in the days of slavery, probably most slaves were allowed to enjoy sex with their spouses and to produce babies.
      Also, many of the trendy economic theories, seem to require continual population increase. Well it is convenient then that our genes also demand, with probably even better reasons, continual population increase.

    • @jackburton6998
      @jackburton6998 6 лет назад +1

      Protest? You mean that multi BILLION dollar industry in the U.S.? Yes it actually makes government bigger. It started in the church and now Disney is in the business of the non profit industrial complex. I hope that one day our common sense will make a better decision then bringing more carbon foot prints onto the planet. Prospects are not looking good.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 6 лет назад

      To what protest are you referring? I see no previous mention of protests?
      It is wrong to relegate precious human beings, or babies, to being mere "carbon footprints". That is not a proper way to look at the immense value and sacredness of every person. There are many compelling reasons to have more children, such that I have long encouraged people to have larger families.
      And it is not just that "they" want for us to procreate and population increase, but there is also the possibly-friendly natural population competition. If we do not grow our group, other groups will grow, and we lose influence. So although some might suspect ulterior motives in the system or in society encouraging further population growth, there are a lot of reasons why we should multiply, that benefit the common people as well.

    • @jackburton6998
      @jackburton6998 6 лет назад +1

      We don't have time to discuss what's proper. BTW Your comments are monetized as well. We need more population to get youtube more money.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 6 лет назад

      Are you suggesting that it is all about making money, and that is all that is being considered? That would seem rather shortsighted. And I kind of wish it was that simple. However, there are radical crazies, some elitists with way too much power, who scheme to impose their bizarre pagan religious delusions upon us. And they are religiously contrary to the natural increase of humans, due to their own wickedness, and trendy theories that simply are not true and have a bad history to them.
      I suspect that your comment was sarcastic. However, there are many religious and philosophical reasons for population increase. Cultural and practical reasons also. So it is not just about the money. If stores put diaper changing counters in both the men's and women's restrooms, because they think that by encouraging more procreation, it will bring them future customers, I am okay with that. For them, it may be somewhat about the future money, but it also benefits the customers and the potential parents. It is win-win, and pro-life.

      We do need a way, WAY bigger market to make it economically viable to reach for the stars. We are an infinitesimal dot in the cosmos, and yet we are undeniably special and worth protecting. Expanding our population is the only way we stand a chance at evading annihilation. For goodness' sake, we can be killed tomorrow by a flare from our own sun. Also, listen to Gandhi: 'The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.' Very true. The richest countries use much more resources per capita than necessary. We can welcome ten times more compatriots into the world, as long as we use our resources better.
