      @@eccentricoldcow Why support him. He is basically saying we are out growing our borders because of scientific brake through, then in the same sentence he blames religious people for coveting life. For having life a sacred. He wants science to intervene in nature to stabilise it. If science left it alone it would have regulated itself and controlled our population naturally, now science gets to regulate it. Do you think they will do a better job than god. And if so then who becomes god.

    The speech was done in 2011, the Philippines knew and recognizes its population problem for quite a time already, reproductive health bills were being filled as early as 1967 but it was only in 2012 that a bill was passed into law and with so much criticism from the Catholic church and various religious groups, it just so happen that the current president then was a staunch supporter of the bill that he actually worked on its passing. Up until now the Catholic and it's cohorts is fighting its implementation despite that majority of Filipinos are in favor of family planning.

My hope is that along side the advancement of medicine, there is also a shift in our attachment to our own life: I know of many people of have refused medical assistance, prefering death to a longer life spent witnessing the suffering of others without being able to do a thing.

I think it's time to give up on the human race...just check the comments on overpopulation or global warming videos - about half or more of them claim that these are not problems. When so many people don't care, there's no reason to try and help them. I for one will enjoy every day that i have food, water, electricity and internet access, because there's no doubt that 30-50 years from now these will be hard to come by. If the majority wants to live in poverty, i say let them have 10 kids each, starve, fight over food and resources and maybe start a 3rd World War and end our suffering. i really love David Attenborough i´ve seen him in many many documentaries and panels. But when he´s asked about the problems in the world or what worries him most etc. he always gives the same answer: overpopulation.
    I admire his tenacity and commitment on that topic but it´s by far not the worst problem we face. The biggest problem in the world is the unequal destribution of wealth. If we can solve this almost all others are solved including overpopulation.
    Which is a bad term in itself the earth can by many estimates support many more people at the moment than we currently have if only our resources would be distributed more equally.

    • @flameshadow117
      @flameshadow117 8 лет назад +3

      there are certainly other issues, but I think it's alright if he harps on this one. Overpopulation can be addressed very easily compared to wealth inequality. Just educate people about contraception, and make contraception available. Often the poorest people have the most children because they can't afford contraception. You can easily devise a plan to make contraceptives available to poor communities, you can't *easily* devise a plan to make poor communities wealthy. It's a stop-gap solution to be sure, but having fewer children to support could make the wealth-distribution problem easier to solve, too.

    • @flameshadow117
      @flameshadow117 8 лет назад +5

      Bill Nye always approaches the same issue from the point of women's education. Women with better access to education have fewer children, and have better opportunities to make money, as well. Education is probably the best solution, but distributing contraceptives is an important measure, too.

    •*1 bn people go hungry, yet 70 bn livestock slaughtered a year globally. It seems food is more than plentiful in some places but not in other places.
    •"Climate change tops the environmental agenda...a rich person will produced vastly more [CO2] than a poor one..." and goes on to say the poor will suffer more than the rich from climate change. That's interesting and needs looking into: how the rich contribute to CO2 emissions and by how much.
    •The Duke seems to forget economic growth itself is unsustainable in terms of CO2 emissions. Plus we live in a global economy so that often places like India are and have been exploited by Western countries for their raw materials & wealth while their workers have been exploited, so have vastly contributed to the wealth of our own country at the expense of their own.
    •The Duke mentions not wanting more immigration into the UK. I agree that immigration is something we should all be able to talk about. However, we see what Boris Johnson's govt's Brexit & their immigration policy have done: to remove vital EU workers from the already struggling National Health Service, haulage, hospitality and farming industries, and to make more difficult for people enter and fill those roles the indigenous British population is unable or unwilling to do. Certainly many went back to their EU countries citing that they no longer felt welcome. Furthermore, perhaps if western countries like the UK stopped interfering or creating middle east conflicts then maybe the numbers of asylum seekers would not feel the need to flee their homes. He doesn't seem to understand how the dots connect and the part our country has and still plays colonially in poorer developing countries.

    It's tiring to hear that people don't want government to tell them what to do BUT they are quick to hold government responsible for making sure people can eat and are protected.
    We can't have it both ways. There has to be reasonable balance.

    my intuition tells me that an educated first world person consumes and polutes much more than an uneducated third world person. Am I right? How much more?
    and then, how do you educate people but prevent them from wanting to become a full size consumer/poluter?

    I can't get my head around how solar power, and I know some house owners have solar panels fitted, which pays for their personal consumption plus, how investing in green energy cars, charged by solar power technology, and so on with green technology, how are these improvements on green living not an investment?! Community gardens, growing the seeds they can save, and trees that actually support wildlife, community, and improve air quality, whereby poorer people could benefit also, which must then encourage many more smaller less intensive farming as a ecological movement; how are these interests not an investment? And, how is this not creating more work and employment for the next generations?! Where no sale of greenbelt land to property developers means just that, no, to all councils included. Raised my eyebrows always to see ANY person co-creating three plus children. Are the government and energy companies going to support and encourage these investments? Probably not, because all they can see is short term gains as a means to keep the power they have over the general public, for their own short term gain, and so they are seen promoting resistance to change especially to business and working people. I can't understand why some people can't get their heads around that, when it seems so simple to so many others especially the majority of young people and older children who are our future and the future custodians and inheritors of the planet. Most young people see themselves now as part of the globe (i.e. personally connecting with people all around the world through the internet), not separate, despite borders, wars, and patriotism. WE NEED TO CHANGE AND CHANGE THE WAY THINGS HAVE BEEN FOR TOO LONG ALREADY.
    Thank you RSA, President of the RSA His Royal Heiness the Duke of Edinburgh, and Sir David Attenborough, for bringing this important discussion to all.

    • @bluestariver6479

      I didn't say simple, I said clear. I meant the cause of most of our current major problems is being caused by a huge human population, and that it is clear and obvious that it needs to be greatly reduced. Which would of course be no simple task in itself.

      it seems that governments need bodies to sustain the welfare of others, in order to avoid an economic collapse. Once a standard of living is raised it needs to be sustained ... a cut may lead to war. Damned if you do... damned if you don't.

    While I have always respected David Attenborough he seems to put the blame of the extinction of wildlife on the human population. While it is true to a point he seems to avoid the fact that the biggest polluters and threats to the environment are big business and corporations who are allowed to pollute the environment. It's alright to pollute if your a big business or corporation and putting wealth into the economy, that's fine. Normal citizens don't have the same rights to do so, why is big buiness and corporation not have the same concern? The average citizen tends to be more concerned about the environment then people making money out of taking land for exploitation and wealth

    You absolutely missed the point,he is suggesting to educate people world wide about population growth,and it's consequences,so that the population it self is aware and able to control the growth,and that would applie to everyone,rich and poor,and unless this actually happens,and the numbers on growth are right,then so is he,eventually we will have wars over territory and oil,and taking into consideration technology these days,WW 1 and WW 2 would look pathetic in destructive capabilities.

  • @pehtispppp
    @pehtispppp 14 лет назад +1

    The point on education and population control is common sense and reasonable.
    Nevertheless the actual problem that billions of human beings are currently suffering on earth is because of the unequal money system and sir attenborough wont or dont want to talk about. As Raj Patel said workers in India died of hunger as they loaded the grain onto the trains and they starved because the way that we distribute food is through the market, and those people were too poor to be able to afford that food.

    I wonder how many in the audiance actually agreed with what he was saying. - Most of them seem to not understand starvation or being "skint". I wonder how many of them would use his advice or would they rather remove the lower classes. People who arnt helpful to the economy will be first to go not the ones with the Degree's or the high paid jobs... Why not? - Are us as human beings able to chose. one man did and every one fought against him Hitler. It may well happen again but will be accepted?

    Modern forms of agriculture mean we can farm in ways never dreamed of when Malthus wrote his essays. We can now cultivate mountainsides, on top of the vast seas. Irrigate remote places, grow food without soil, grow food with artificial sunlight, re-soil deserts etc. Despite the growth in global populations we have more wasted food today than 50 years ago. Future technologies are sure to increase yields. Perhaps as Nigel Ecclesfield suggested (53:30) we should focus on the "Other Taboo" first?

    "Money/market" is ROOT of problems, how do we:
    1. stop corruption caused by profit motive?
    2. ensure everyone has minimum necessities?
    ANSWER
    1. FREELY Share ALL resources & knowledge worldwide, NO more money/property
    2. Use LATEST technology to create an ABUNDANCE of all our needs, NO more waste/theft
    3. Automate/localize ALL production and distribution, NO more central control/wage slavery

    I could be wrong but I think that the duke of Edinbrugh in his closing remarks meant that another world war or large scale conflict a seemingly obvious solution to overpopulation would be wrong. I am not certain i quite share that view. Overpopulation is rarely discussed probably because people instinctively know that eventually there will be another major conflict if human history repeats itself which it has without fail. That is very pessimistic to hope for one earth issue to be solved by a catastrophy but there is merit to the idea. For a world war to have devastating effects on population reduction 1. It should involve the country with the most numerous population, we all know who that is : China 2. the enemy should have equal destructive force so that the conflict lasts and claims the greatest number of lives. 3. Weapons used should not be overly destructive as to destroy all type of lives. But no matter what, in the meantime talking about overpopulation is good. A conscience of the problem has to be spread. China really is the problem.

    Our advancement with technology has been a blessing and curse! I agree that the race to stay one or two steps ahead of the population explosion via technology will at some point be lost. Then hell will rule. BTW.. I was raised a Catholic, but am an independent objective thinker. Be "fruitful and multiple" may need a little editing. But I dare to say it seems we are the only species that engages in sex solely for pleasure. Why?

    Excellent from both Sir David and the Duke. However, four years on, I see no evidence of political/societal will to make this a mainstream topic of mature consideration. Indeed, The Duke's grandson, when asked if he and Kate would have more children after their second born, could only respond fatalistically 'You never know'

    Step back for a moment...Based on your comment, you believe he is an expert on the economy, and just blew it off for some personal advantage.
    Attenborough has never refrained from examining the world from his perspective and bringing it to the homes of hundreds of millions of people.
    The core premise of this lecture was to give context to the real and unarguable fact that this planet will not sustain itself at this rate of global population growth.
    So no, he is not living in a bubble.
