  • JJ is gone and Looper Director Rian Johnson steps in. Since Disney bought Star Wars, they've yet to do anything that wows me, is The Last Jedi the answer to that?

My favorite part was when the plot took a brief time out so a rebel soldier could tell us the planet was layered with salt.
Personally I don't like salt. It's rough and it's coarse and it gets everywhere.

None of the new characters introduced in this movie interests me, heck, they annoy the hell out of me, especially Rose. Pacing is my biggest problem with this film. Liked The Force Awakens a lot more. Overall, The Last Jedi has interesting ideas, but very disappointing.
P.S. I liked Mark Hamil's acting and I fucking hate Porgs.

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад +1

Porgs are there purely for childish marketing because they look cute. BB8 is also in that zone, but at least he has some character. The porgs are about as worthless as Phasma. I agree, The Last Jedi seems like it wants to do more than Disney will allow it. It's a bit messy. The Force Awakens had its problems, but it was tight and entertaining throughout.

Also would like to point out to you a very small detail that I was happy to be able to spot. During the final battle between projected Luke and Kylo Ren, whenever Kylo moves, the white salt is removed to reveal a red ruby-ish ground, but when Luke moves, the white salt never moves out and reveal the red ground, since he is just projection. This is a very excellent and subtle kind of foreshadowing that I want to see in movies. This, scene, alongside the last moment of Luke, are definitely memorable as hell.

It breaks the tradition of the second film in a Star Wars trilogy. Nobody gets their arm cut off, there isn't anybody from the Fett family, and there isn't a romance story.

Since they have shown that ghost Yoda could influence the real, why couldn't a force ghost snooke do the same thing? I don't know though if Siths can become force ghosts. Was there in the EU something like that?

+Legend JJ has a big task on his hands. I've got faith in him though, Force Awakens wasn't too bad. It's more the script I have problems with than direction in these movies.

Leia Mary Poppins'ing onto the ship was definitely over the top BS. I genuinely gasped with surprise when she got spaced and then just felt really cheap. Like they just bottled showing a harsh truth of war in exchange for keeping a character alive

Love your critque, man. You put out great shit.
Qui-Gon's training was incomplete and he admits that in The Clone Wars, but that still doesn't explain Obi-Wan.
The exploration of weird force shit in this movie was tops. Hell yes. Give me more.
But they didn't commit to the title of the movie. Please for the love of midi-chlorians let the Jedi religion die. They were fucked, fam.

Thought this movie was a hot piece of garbage. I agree with you about how flat Rey's character is and how wasted the opportunity for her development was. She continued to be a mary sue. Agree that snoke was just mishandled. Everything about him was wasted from any back story to such an anti climatic ending. The same with Lukes death. Anticlimatic and still a giant WTF?? He suffered so much in life just to revert back to being a whiny brat and giving up? No. Not going to accept that. They took all the old characters and did a 180 on what their personalities were like. Ben solo wouldn't make Han and Leia split and he certainly wouldn't of made Han or Luke turn in to losers.
Speaking of brats, agree with you that Ren is too much of one to be any sort of supreme leader. The main commander of the FO is one too. Snokes logic with having him in charge was just nonsensical. Perhaps having a smart person in charge of your entire fleet would be a better idea? The entire FO is just too cartoonish to respect in comparison to the empire. Other disappointments were Rose and all the social justice and identity politics injected in to the film plus nothing from the TFA mattered. Watching Po and that admiral have at it I got the idea that it was toxic masculinity or patriarchy vs matriarchy and wooh thank god we have level headed feminism!
I think the only good parts was the comedy with those little bird things, yoda, the dialogue between rey and ren and Del Toros character and his philosophy about the war. Agree with you on some bits but fuck me if this move wasn't just a giant pile of flaming garbage. I think that people's expectations for movies have severely lowered for anyone to LOVE or like this movie. I don't want to bring up nostalgia or super fans but some how I feel like 'real' fans should be let in that writing room. God forbid, we might actually get a real star wars film with more realistic themes and characters, better world building and star wars logic. Not going to give money to Disney for any more.

I saw the movie finally and I'm sorry but it was a letdown for me because I think they missed out on a lot of opportunities and the plot didn't deliver what it could have if it was written better. I think this is due to the change in directors from JJ Abram. I can go into a million different reasons literally a million different reasons why this movie was just blah to me. Okay here's a few things no details, snoke unanswered, Rey's parents, Luke Skywalker Behavior, Luke's quick death, Ray getting the best of Luke Skywalker, where are the Knights of Ren, is kylo Ren powerful not powerful or what or just a hot head, kylo Ren the new big bad for this next movie, why didn't you listen to Poe Dameron, or clue him in to the plan, why did they not use fasma in a better way she's supposed to be bad in a good way, what's up with Finn and the whole Casino thing, what's up with Finn's used in this movie, why didn't they use Ray more in this movie, fasma got killed like that, snoke is so powerful he didn't sense kylo doing that trick, Luke Skywalker is afraid, Luke Skywalker would kill a kid or even think about killing a kid, the space battle made no sense, so the whole mutiny could have been avoided, the whole plan that Finn had with the Asian girl was for nothing, they just happen to find another hacker in jail that could have freed his self the whole time, imma stop now I'm tired. Sorry I'm not to complain and tight but this movie really let me down. I'm a positive person and I feel dirty talking like this but I blame the director.

Luke was made into a hopeless coward hobo bum sucking sea cow milk while dancing a guardians of the galaxy distraction dance to the rick roll song. The orginal movies luke never gave up and saw good even in vader but this movie he becomes the reason billions of people die as Luke reversed all of his beliefs.
Black guy comedic relief and cannot be hero. Purple hair freak can be hero and her act is good. Contradictions. The movie was a dumpster fire burning the franchise to the ground and a marxist animal loving hate letter by riah johnson to the fans.

Last Jedi 2nd viewing review (no spoilers) :
I liked the movie in the same way I like fast food... I enjoy eating it but that does not mean is good nor healthy. After 30 minutes you are hungry again because there are no real nutrients. Calling these movies a 'franchise' is so appropriate. They're like McDonalds -- appeal to the lowest common denominator, simple, empty, and out to make money only.
Is this what we are suposed to expect from the Disney cinema experience? From a big budget Star Wars movie? Not worth the money.
Why is it that cable tv shows have much better writing?
Regarding the Hero´s Journey, this movie fails every single aspect of it and that is why people won´t care for it. The hype won´t last more than a few months. Pure marketing stunt based on nostalgia and special effects.
Star Wars went from universal themes and an epic mythological story to politics and fake feminism.
If what you like is action, special effects and cheap comedy than this is the movie for you.
Kathleen Kennedy pissed on the fan base, Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker and the entire world with her distorted view on feminism.
For the love of God fire this woman!
Clearly this is a producer film and not an art film. Money is the name of this game and artistic integrity is thrown out the window. I simply cannot believe Rian was in control of this movie.
    My major complaints:
    ( SPOILER WARNING )
Did Luke hit Yoda when Yoda refused to train him? Is that what feminism is all about? Women beating men? Telling men what to do? Isn´t the master´s choice of whom he is willing to teach? Physicaly beating your own teacher because you disagree makes you surpass him? I sense the Dark Side in this movie.
I support real feminism by the way and Mary Sues are the antithesis of feminism. Just to name a few, here are some great female fictional characters:
Ellen - Gone with the Wind
    Ripley - Alien franchise
    Elizabeth - Pride and Prejudice
    Sarah Connor - Terminator
Imperator Furiosa - Madmax Fury Road
    Alice in Wonderland
    Wonder Woman - 2017
Beauty and the Beast - 2017
    Pocahontas
    Tombraider
    Princess Leia
    Mary Poppins
    Princes Fiona - Shrek
    Valeria - Conan the Barbarian
    etc, etc
Kylo Ren: Space Columbine Emo. There isn’t much else to say about it.
Rey ( Mary Sue or Space Jesus ):
Independent woman who lives by herself in a dessert planet
No parenting needed (how was she brought up as a scavenger? Force Awakens is also included in this list)
    No friends arround
    Professional scavenger
Can fight 2 men easily with no help required
    Speaks fluent Robot
    Speaks fluent Wookie
Knows how to pilot a ship .
Knows mechanic more than Han and Chewie
Knows how to use the Force WITHOUT ANY TRAINNING.
Instant best friends with ALL OF THE CHARACTERS including Kylo and Snoke (everybody likes her instantly)
Knows how to use a lightsaber
Beats Kylo Ren in a physical fight
Beats Kylo Ren in a moral fight
    Is disrespectful to Luke
Beats Luke in a physical fight
Beats Luke in a moral fight
    Beats Snoke guards
    Gives orders to Chewbacca
Gets to keep the millenium falcon ( #wookielivesmatter guys )
Yoda kisses her ass for no reason
Knows everything that was on the sacrate Jedi books ( THAT SHE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT IT ) .
NO TEMPTATION NOR FEAR to go to the Dark Side ( booooring )
    Loves a Space Columbine Emo
All of this abilities except that she is extremely fragile, naive and immature.... THAT DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE !!!
Actually, come to think of it... even Jesus had temptations and moments of despair. She is the worst character ever created.
    ------------------------------------
Fin: The only one following the Hero´s Journey is put aside as a secondary character... a black man as a comic relief ? How original ! Waysted character (should be main lead) .
Poe: How a stupid feminist (not all of them are ) sees all straight man. Arrogant, impulsive, stupid and way over his head.
Holdo: Arrogant feminist textbook. If there wasn´t an archetype for arrogant feminism, now there is.
Rose: "Save what you love". Fuck the resistance I guess.
Rian Johnson: To be fair, JJ gave him a mess to follow up. How to make Rey interesting if she was a Mary Sue? How to make Kylo interesting if he was a space Emo?
He didn’t have much to work with. Both directors lacked balls to face Kathleen Kennedy and her capitalist and political agenda. Anyways, ALL of them are making tons of money... so FUCK THEM and their excuses!!!
This movie is the new Batman and Robin. My only hope is that Disney will come arround and reboot the series Christopher Nolan’s style. Before its too late.
Kathleen Kennedy´s expectation: "Ok, so on episode 7 we make them wonder about the origins of several stuff in the movie and then on episode 8 we just throw these questions out the window, don´t answer any of it and say it´s time to let go of the past... brilliant! "
Chewbacca: Rey’s employee and barbeque man.
    Leia: Space Mary Poppins
    Luke: Winning bitter old fart.
5 minutes training and then she gives Luke a moral lesson and beats a FULLY TRAINED JEDI. If you think that time fades training then I sugest you go to a 70 year old black belt martial arts teacher and see how well you do in a fight... trust me you are going to get your ass kicked.
Kathleen Kennedy and The Power of Marketing
Reasons why Luke died like a coward:
    1. He gave up on the Jedis and the resistance. Depressive much?
    2. He could easily force pulled his ship and just go there himself.
    3. He went to that island to die and got his wish? Wow, what a hero!
    4. Obi Wan gave his life so that Luke and friends could escape but he was in a NO OTHER OPTION situation. Luke was never going to leave him behind... he had to do it... big difference.
    5. Yoda was 900 years old and still did not give up on the Jedi (on the contrary, he praised the Jedi as serious warriors with the deepest commitment). He trained Luke and died only when Luke was about to become a Jedi ( "face him you will" )

Personally, this is my favorite Star Wars film. I honestly struggle to think of a single thing that doesn’t work for me. I thought the scene with Leia was great, and I don’t understand why THAT’s the bridge too far in ridiculousness for so many people.

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад +1

Aside from the mass amounts of scientific inaccuracies with it (this is Star Wars, so I won't go into the science), I just think it kind of left a bad taste. With Carrie Fisher unfortunately passing away, I think that false death was accepted by a lot of people, so to see her crawl out of death in such a clunky and out-of-the-blue manner, it comes across a little bit slapstick. Leia has never been shown to be a force user in the movies, though it's implied she can use the force, so for her to be able to rescue herself like that seemed a bit odd, even if it does technically make sense.

I both agree AND disagree with you a bit. I thought the movie was great. It’s NOT the best star wars movie ever made. But it’s not the WORST either. It has issues sure *COUGH* Finn and Rose storyline *COUGH*. But it shouldn’t take away for all the nostalgia, work and passion that went into this movie. You can clearly see that Rian Johnson loves star wars. But even though he does. It isn’t easy to make follow up saga for what might be the biggest franchise in the world. Anyway, great review as always. Hope you can take some away from all this. And keep up the good work.

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад +1

I don't see nostalgia as being a plus to a Star Wars movie. I feel like these movies need to try and not rely on the previous trilogy in order to impress people. Leia and Luke were nostalgia done properly. Yoda is debatable, but I enjoyed his scene. As I say in the review though, nostalgia might be a plus for you, but it's a negative for me.
