Porting the turbo on Bryson's "Initial D" 1987 Mazda RX7 FC

  • This car pumps out 13.5 (or more) pounds of boost without any intervention from the turbo controller. I don't like that! So it's time to fix it. The spring cracks at 6 pounds and is all the way open at 10 pounds, so we must have inadequate waste. Let's tear into it!

    Woo, more FC! Loving the path this car is taking!

      Thanks, man. Just picking my way through it one step at a time. It's good to hear I might be doing something right. :)

    When Bryson returns from his church mission (hats off to him for dedicating these two years of his life to such a wonderful cause!), we gotta see a full, multiple-angle video of his reaction!

      I have thought about that a little bit. Luckily I have some time to figure out how to do the reveal, cause I don't know how to pull it off yet. Ideas?

      An idea: No significant buildup; rather, just a simple "hey...I made a few changes to your Mazda, and I have some ideas for you. Let's go outside and check it out." The car could be alone in the shop waiting for him, or a crowd of family and friends could be around the car to welcome him. It'll be a win no matter what you do. The real gold will be the shots of him seeing it and driving it.

      @@bookofjarom I have been trying to think of a way to say nothing and let it happen naturally. That makes it difficult to have cameras on place. When he left he asked me if I would just make it run, so he will probably ask me about it. Maybe I'll have to find someone who might be willing to hang out in the shop on the day he gets home and wait for him to go out there.

      I like it! In fact, is there a way, with some well-placed cameras, to have nobody out there? Since surprises like this involve one or many people to see the person's reaction, having nobody out there (no witnesses to confirm what his eyes are seeing) could add an "am I dreaming?" element to his reaction.

      Maybe. You're thinking of some sort of remote-activated or motion-activated cameras?

    If you can get a downpipe that incorporates a bellmouth right behind the gate so the flow isn’t a awkward 90 degree path to flow into the turbine exhaust stream I bet it would sort the last bit of your boost creep issue
    Every old internal gated car I’ve done this with has resulted in massively improved boost control. With additional power as a side benefit

      @some-guys-garage  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the pointer. It takes 10lbs to fully open the gate, so 10 psi isn't really unexpected after I think about it. But to your point, the more the waste can flow the better.

      @@some-guys-garage at the minimum you’ll have more power and that’s never bad

    Check out the bnr turbo upgrades-uses the oem turbo for parts. Extremely affordable comparable to precision/garett/holset($875 USD plus core and shipping). I'm running 10psi at 310whp(break in tune) with a streetport and other assortments.

    Now throw that s4 turbo onto the shelf. And get you the oem s5 one. And do the same thing. And watch the difference. It's going to be a peppy rotary for sure.

      The s5 has two wastegate ports. Does porting that one really make any difference? Once the wastegate can keep up with the turbine, I don't see how modding it makes any difference? Too much wastegate would just make it difficult to tune, wouldn't it?
