    SO, about the Rotary engine.....
    The relevance of an automotive product is directly linked to its demand in the market. In an automotive market where the majority of the population are looking to travel from point A to B, people will refuse to withstand a lack of simple durability. Logistics.
    Yes it was a failure. Was it because of poor design? NO. A refined rotary has already been developed by a mechanical company in california, as well as Mazdas own rx7 work recently. This engine also destroyed boundaries previously unexplored by the traditional piston engine.
    Can this engine last a long time? YES. If properly cared for and maintenanced one can receive a premium from this engine in terms of durability. When was the last time you maintenanced your car? If your answer isn't, "Oh, i work on it every week" then I politely state that you are incapable of understanding the situation - and probably never will.
    So now you might cite examples of rx7's that were maintenanced and still fell apart. I would be willing to bet they were modified by someone who was NOT experienced with a rotary (Can easily lead to poor repairs, poor choice of and installment of replacement apex seals, etc...). Also may have had a very.... enthusiastic..... induction system like the one in this video.
    IN THE END. Is it cool? YES. Is it reliable? YES. Is it durable?..... Are you a dedicated gear head who is confident in their knowledge of a rotary engine?
    AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS I AM JUST AN "RX FAN"
    -I drive a JEEP with a 35 year old AMC *PISTON* engine that i work on all the time
    -I am a diehard JEEP fan
    -I am just here to state the facts
    -FINALLY, i am annoyed that people who cant even tell you how a rotary works will condemn it over what they have heard or read.

  • @Thezuule1
    @Thezuule1 9 лет назад +18

    Why wouldn't you use a slightly smaller turbo to get boost across more of the curve?

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 9 лет назад +16

      +Thezuule Because this car stock produces it's max tourque at @ 5k RPM. So you usually want to start your power at the max torque.
      This car stock doesn't like to get shifted before 5k RPM. It will lug bad and be slow to drive as this car is famous for having no low end torque.

    • @overnightpartsfromjapan01
      @overnightpartsfromjapan01 9 лет назад

      +SI0AX Remember power is torque x rpm. If you produce more low-rpm torque you also produce more low-rpm power. This isn't a stock car it's a 20B. A smaller turbo would improve the area under the curve (average power output across the rev range). Running a large capacity rotor with a stupidly large turbo doesn't make much sense, as you're losing the low-rpm response advantage that should come with 50% more exhaust gas flow compared to a 13B.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 9 лет назад

      overnightpartsfromjapan
      This is tuned purely for top end. This is a race car setup of course. It sacrifices low end for high HP. So this thing accelerates very fast like a motorcycle.
      Only a track racing enthusiast can drive this.
      Rob looks fit enough and It seems like he's been at the circuit. If you can do 20 laps in a row on a decently challenging circuit I'm sure you can daily this car.
      I wouldn't mind daily driving a race car with no interior, rattles and vibrates your balls of, drones, has no air conditioning(in 90 deg weather) and has a roll cage that forces you to enter through the window lol.

    hey Rob, I'm thinking of getting an rx7 but I'm kinda scared of the reliability or lack of. how do I make these more reliable? a few people say it's get a boost gauge and change to a single turbo as your first mods, but what do you think?

    • @darionfarina2069
      @darionfarina2069 8 лет назад +5

      While both of the things you listed would be good for reliability on the boost side, you've also gotta take care of that special rotary engine, premixing, keeping your coils and spark plugs in good condition and using conventional rather than synthetic motor oils is better for these cars in reliability terms, also drive it like it's a sports car, not a grandma car, rotary engines do not like to be babied, they lubricate more and clean out the carbon that builds up in the engine at higher rpm, also keep your coolant in good shape as these motors run HOT, so coolant is a big thing because even just a small overheat can cause massive damage to these engines, but really that's all you need to do to make them reliable, you can get close to 250-300k miles out of these motors if you treat them right

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer 8 лет назад +1

      Wow, I think you got every myth and old wives tale about Wankel engines in there.. LOl.. 250-300k miles??? Yeah right! maybe if you don't count 4-5 engine overhauls in that 300k miles..

    • @darionfarina2069
      @darionfarina2069 8 лет назад +1

      If every myth and old wives tale is personal experience then yeah maybe I have you're right, maybe 250-300k is a bit of a stretch, but stranger things have happened than a rotary lasting that long without a rebuild, I have seen several surpass 200k without a rebuild, maybe with low compression and running real rough, but they ran and drove, and that's what I say counts, disagree with me if you like, but stranger things have happened, I own an RX-8, I know what I'm talking about

    • @TRektsz
      @TRektsz 8 лет назад

      rotaries require apex and other internal seals as part of maintenance, while there are things you can do to make it more reliable, you WILL have to tear the engine apart to make it last as long as a piston engine.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer 8 лет назад +2

      D Sorry, but here in the real world repairs that require engine removal, complete dis-assembly and complete overhaul are not considered "maintenance" this is called "Engine Failure" and the only course of action is called overhaul, remanufacturing or rebuilding.
      "maintenance" is service done to PREVENT Engine Failure... not a remedy for engine failure.
      Wankel engines simply do not last as long as reciprocating technology and its also the one of the reasons why Wankel engines have been obsolete for years.

    "Only" 600bhp at full boost? Is that at the crank, or at the wheels? Thats still crazy for a car that doesn't weight a lot. @David M, rotary engines aren't as reliable as a piston engine, they wear out kind of quickly, but they don't blow up after 10,000miles of use I think. I would think at least 30,000miles out of a freshly rebuilt and properly broken in engine. 300,000 miles is like how long a volvo lasts. I would think maybe 100,000miles for a rotary

      a volvo *can* last up to and well beyond 300k. 100k is normal for your average american car. I wouldn't expect as much out of a rotary unless it was meticulously maintained.

    • @kingcrimson234
      @kingcrimson234 9 лет назад +1

      MrGnarman Uh, the average american car lasts WELL beyond 100k miles. Usually about double that when maintained. If not more. I had an '86 Oldsmobile as my first car that I sold at 255k and it was still running fantastic. The only major problem it ever had was the transmission went out at around 200k. Engine was still is good shape.

    • @MrGnarman
      @MrGnarman 9 лет назад

      kingcrimson234 yeah, the engine will last, but the car isn't worth the upkeep once you've paid more than the car's worth. ps: I'm an american, and my family has almost exclusively owned american cars until just recently. you can keep any car running past 300k, but you're just going to be throwing money into something that's never going to give you an equal return.

I have no problem admitting i know nothing about them, except how they work in theory. I have never worked on one. I am sure thats whats keeping a lot of people from owning one. You need to spend a lot of time talking to people that have dedicated all of their time to these engines.

      most stock turbos on a diesel are 60 mm give or take, and with some fueling mods can start coming online by 15-1600, once you start going up in size though the turbo may not light till 2000+ depending on the set up and desired power, pulling trucks won't light the turbo/turbos till 3500 rpm depending on the class. My 03 cummins with the stock he341 (54/9/58) can hit 36 psi under 2000 rpm when the converter is locked at half throttle with 100hp injectors and an edge juice.
