Yes sir! I learned alot and its very timely. Here in my country we are experiencing heavy rains and usually the water comes back into the house. Attacking the plumbing with the right plunger helped a lot. Thank you and stay awesome.
Yes I did. I thought I was supposed to pull the plunger out each “plunge” to prevent it from sucking the clog back up. Seeing as you have 40 years experience, I’m thinking it doesn’t matter if the clog is pushed or pulled (and pulling might not really even happen, I don’t know when/where I “learned” to use a plunger), because if the waste is graded properly and the clog dislodges/breaks up, it’ll go down nice n easy. Thank you
Oddly enough, I bought two plungers together. A small sink one and a toilet one. So I made the right call.
i learned not to use the same plunger in my sink and toilet (it's better to just have one for the toilet and one for the sink)
I really don't see the point of putting water in your plunger before plunging the toilet.

@@Zyrdalf I think what he's trying to say is each toilet should just come with a plunger that fits it perfectly. And it's not a bad idea. Many things come with proprietary tools that are required to fix them, why not toilets? It's one of the things in your house that is bound to have an issue at some point. And by god it's depressing how many people don't have the most basic things in their house, like a plunger. Or at least two screwdrivers.

When in doubt pull it out. It worked many times for me as a teen. I wasn’t sure if the girl was willing so I’d just casually whip it out. Once they got a look they always immediately gave in. They realized I wasn’t doing any damage with my kickstand

I’m a pretty good plungerer myself… I find that a quick short plunging motion is best. And I mean as quick as you can. Seems to build up more pressure and you can hear things start to happen. Whenever I see someone plunging and they are going all the way up and all the way down, splashing doodoo water everywhere getting no where I put on my gloves and show them how it’s done. My toilet at home clogs every time you drop the kids off, even if you don’t flush any toilet paper. Getting my practice in. I’m not a plumber, but I’ve lived in some old houses with old toilets and pipes. And now I’m maintenance on a farm so all my hard work is finally paying off. Happy plungeing.
Correct. Because the plunger isn't actually meant to push through the clog. It breaks it up by repeatedly sucking and pushing water in and out of it, with the suck being the critical motion. Because whatever it is that is clogging up the drain, it got there by being pushed in that direction to start with, so just applying a little more force isn't likely to do the trick.
I clicked on this out of curiosity, not knowing what magical secrets there may be about the process that aren't obvious. But honestly, everyone who has at least a high school education in physics should be able to work out how a plunger works, at the latest after the first live application. All it takes it to stop and think for a second about what you do.
I moved into an apartment and on day 1 discovered the toilet in the master wouldn't pass...solids. Not so much as a sheet of TP. Maintenance came by and fished a toothbrush out of the toilet. You might want to check for any obstructions that will just never go away.
Side note: maintenance asked if I did that. My reply was "we just moved in today. I haven't even finished unloading the truck. I bet if you ask the office, the last tenants weren't happy though."

As a professional pooper myself, I've used the Corky plunger for a couple of years now and I love it! Beats nearly every plunger out there and can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot.

@ *Mr. Wakefield,* you have taught me something new! Back when I was a child, (some decades ago) everyone had those "standard" type plungers...the ones I _just_ learned (thanks to you and your vid) are actually supposed to be used for SINKS. I have been wondering why so far I have not been able to find those types of plungers so easily anymore, not at Walmart or my local Home Depot or Lowe's. All the ones I see tend to be variations of the _other_ two plungers you showed (for the toilet). Anytime I have to use that other "new" kind of toilet plunger, I get SO annoyed because it never seems to really work for me. Now I know it's because I've been using it completely wrong! I'm going to send this vid to my hubby and let him know.

I think it's a fool's errand to hope that your round plunger will seal against the bottom of an oddly-shaped toilet bowl. For years, I have used the cheap plastic accordion-like plungers that Home Depot sells for about $4. They are made of rigid plastic and make no pretense of sealing against the toilet bowl. Instead, the accordion shape allows it to push a huge volume of water into the drain with each stroke, despite the poor seal. Works every time. Coming from a family of beavers, I have had plenty of opportunities to verify this.
Also coming from a family of beavers, we actually prefer the water to back up.

Also, I find the accordion shaped ones to work best if you are using the "push through" method that he teaches here. Sometimes you will get better results with a rubber plunger with the "on the backstroke" method. There are plenty of times I've shown up to a clogged toilet (maintenance) and there is some poor guy is pushing with a plunger and swears that I'm gonna need an auger because he's been at it for like twenty minutes now, only for me to use the "backstroke" method and have it done in under 15 seconds. For those unaware, what I call the backstroke method starts out the same as the method shown in this video: you get as much water in your plunger as possible and start making a seal/pumping. Here is where it starts to differ. Instead of pushing the water into the clog and trying to force it down, you make sure that there is a sufficient amount of water in the bowl and make sure that you are instead building up some suction utilizing the water. You then make a small jerk backwards with said plunger. What this does is utilize hydrologic pressure to pull part or all of the clog back slightly, relieving some of the "pile up" in there and allowing the water from the bowl to do the rest, as it is no longer "wedged" down there. Each method I find works, and where one fails, the other will usually succeed. The method shown in this video is much easier to teach the masses though, as the feeling for the right amount of pressure is a small learning curve, and if the method is done wrong, you can pull too hard/much and end up splashing yourself and others with nasty toilet water. Hope this helps!
A round plunger will seal you just have to shove it in further. You don't have to worry about it deforming because as you pulse it it will naturally come back to a flat diaphragm shape somewhere during the stroke so you'll get maximum effect.

In addition to tilting the plunger to fill the bellows with water, I always compress it to expel as much (compressible) air as possible.
Generally, if I need to use a plunger, there's plenty of water in the bowl. Matter of fact, I probably just turned off the water supply to the toilet to keep it from overflowing.
All I learned from watching this video is that I actually DO know how to use a plunger, and have been doing it correctly for decades. Thank you for the confirmation, though. Nice gloves, too..!
6am at work while waiting for calls. I've never been more interested in a tutorial in my life. You're amazing at explaining things.
I use the Korky's Beehive. Key for that one is to fill it with water. Once you do that, one good "plunge" and the clog is usually gone. If you don't fill it with water, it will collapse into itself. It really needs to be "Hydrolocked" for lack of a better term. Air compresses, which is why it collapses. Water doesn't compress, so it needs to be filled with water to avoid collapses.

When I was in college I showed up at a party some women I knew were throwing, I had worked all night so it was after midnight, everyone seem to be bummed out and I found out that the toilet was clogged, the water was to the brim and overflowing it was disgusting. All the other "men" were to lazy or ignorant to solve the problem, I asked if there was a plunger in the house and all they had was a small sink plunger, needless to say I got my hands dirty but it was effective in the job, I cleaned up and my respect level went through the roof...I knew it was not the right tool for the job, but I also knew doing nothing would not work either, Thanks for your show it is both informative and entertaining

I LOVE the Korky beehive plunger. The only time 1 or 2 pushes didn't unclog it, was when someone who didn't know better flushed a washcloth.
B/f breaking out a closet auger I've had success with dropping a few kettles'/pots' worth of *boiling* water down to loo to free up blockage. Drop the lid for added effect, allowing the hot water to work for up to an hour. Repeat as needed. This method has done what plungers haven't in my exper.

This is a great channel. I just called my favorite plumber, and he showed me how to unclog a slow or plugged sink using a plunger. I was in shock. Furthermore, I used many chemicals, it didn't work. He said all those chemicals are good for preventing clogged pipes deep down behind your walls, but your sink pipes are filled with crud. A good plunger can easily break down and push the unwanted crud through, clearing the debris. He didn't charge me for the less than the five-minute work.

Thanks Roger, about the first plunger, another way I use it is pulling first down not letting air get inside so I use it backwards to pull back wathever is in there to recover it, maybe some tights or any kind of cloth wich fall into the sink, of course I pull out some not good desire things but it some times worth it.

Thank you, I watched your videos on cleaning slow running drains and products which would help the issue. Then I watched this video. $40 later all my drains are clear. I purchased the appropriate additional plungers for each of our four bathrooms. Thank you for the videos and saving me money on other products which would not have fixed the issue.
the first type of plunger also works well for popping big dents out of sheet metal.
And showers/tubs, Just be sure to seal up the overflow.
As a kid, my dad used to say, “that kid never met a toilet he couldn’t clog”

my grandfather is a plumber and told me a story about a schooner sailboat and it's horrifying plumbing that he took out of the old vessel... he said it was clogged because of how much pipe they used for bypassing clogs and other stuff, he replaced it with a pump and a 45 degree t pipe fitting... it still holds up better than what they had... but my god the picture he took made it look like plumber's hell... if you took a look at it there were pipes going up, down, left, right, and heck even at uneven angles.... it was soo bad that it was not doing anything but clogging up the toilets... what makes it funnier is he didn't know how to work with this certain pump and yet he still installed it correctly...
