If watchmojo actually researched the Sega Saturn they would know that it was the top competitor and somewhat more popular than the PS1 in Japan with a library of over 3500 games. It only failed in the US and Europe due to an early release and crappy marketing.

+Chris J Well no RPGs. Bernie what's his face is to blame for most of Sega's lost money during the 90's. I think Sega would have stood a chance. But I think most of us like the Dreamcast. Heck the Dreamcast is a better console than the Saturn the problem with the Dreamcast was they couldn't compete with the PS2. Much like how it was with the PS one when the Saturn was out. Also note NO Sonic game and NO RPGs in the West contribute to your sales.

I remember being young during that time and thinking it was weird too
As I recall, the Saturn suffered from a high asking price, high priced games and not enough quality game titles. Much the same as the Atari Jaguar and other systems like the Dreamcast. Some consoles, I feel were, just too ahead of their time and too expensive period.
Sega Saturn was anything but ''ahead of its time''
However, the story for Sega Saturn was somewhat different in Japan. They spared no expense to launch the Sega Saturn in Japan before there was any talks of extending the Sega Genesis' lifespan. They did also chose Hiroshi Fujioka, a legendary action star and first generation Kamen Rider actor, to be the Sega Saturn's mascot, Segata Sanshiro, as part of their marketing campaign.
Why’d you include the dreamcast? Sure it was ahead of its time but that was in the good way
It didn’t help that when it was unveiled the Saturn was released that very day, as opposed to the Winter of 1995 just so they could get ahead of Nintendo and Sony. This really screwed them over since games that were still in development like Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA were released unfinished. Now they did put out rereleases to fix all the bugs and actually finish the game but it was very idiotic on Sega’s move. And gamers aren’t always willing to buy a console in the Summer they usually do that in either November with Black Friday or the beginning of December, it’s usually a better strategy to wait before releasing your new console.

The consoles put on this list are decided by units sold before discontinuation, reviews at the time, and general public opinion at the time. And at the time (at least in the US), it didn’t sell well because SEGA decided it would be a good idea to just go to E3 and basically say “It’s out now, you can buy it!”

"A Sega console without Sonic?" Wrong! While Sonic 3D Blast made its release on the Genesis, the game was also released on the Sega Saturn. "Sonic R" was released for the Sega Saturn as well.
Oh and not to mention, Sonic Jam was released for the Saturn also.

Poor Ouya. I was so very close to getting one because I could mod it and the creators insisted on the modding.
As for the Gamecom... that was total shit.
I found a KS backer model in a pawn shop a week after they were shipped out. Always regret not picking it up cause once you mod one you have a pretty good emulator box that works with ps3 controllers.
True I remember for e3 2013 Ouya was holding their own convention across from e3 they weren't allowed inside. So they were trying to get free press by having a convention outside it was so cringe worthy and sad.

I'm surprised you didn't include the VIRTUAL BOY, I couldn't buy one in England, well I think it was only released in Japan and the u.s.a helped it fail but I imported one and I'll never forget the warm fuzzy sensation I got every time I played it - the only trouble been that warm and fuzzy feeling was in my eyeballs

Tell me about it, people who shit on the Saturn obviously has never even played one. I remember when I used to stear clear of the Saturn but once I got one, I never regretted it. I have over 40 games for it and I'm so happy to own two of them :)
The Saturn is arguably the best 2D system ever. The Turbo Express although it was only an honorable mention on this list was a revolutionary portable system at the time.

Japanese Saturn was a succes

The major reason the Saturn failed in the West was very bad marketing. Sega of America was still smarting after the colossal flop the 32x was, and was very lukewarm in it's media release of the console. Thus, all of the hype became about the Playstation and later the N64. They did better with the Dreamcast hype, but it still was too little too late.

And Sonic 3D was a real Sonic game for the Saturn and different than the genesis and game gear version. I simply loved it. So that is really bad information they give here. +drummingdyl The console's hardware design made developing games difficult and expensive while PlayStation allowed a much easier process of developing games. Because of this, the PlayStation had more quality and quantity games than the Saturn. While the Saturn actually has great classics, it didn't justify the purchase when the PlayStation was straight-up better in game library.
Not only did the Saturn sell poorly because of the competition, but it also lacked JRPGs, a genre that was huge at the time. This was so impactful that even the Nintendo 64 failed in Japan. Sega lost a ton of money that they earned with the Sega Genesis. So much of it was lost that it wasn't enough to support the Dreamcast for longer than three years. 9 million units is considered a commercial failure, and was probably the first step in Sega's downfall, and that's why the Saturn is considered bad.
THE COLECO TELSTAR. When I was a tiny kid, my parents had a video game console that wasn't Atari, and until now, I couldn't remember for the life of me what it was. They upgraded me to an NES a few years later.

Still playing Saturn today with Die Hard Arcade and it's great! Watchmojo got this one wrong!

I'm not sure why Sega Saturn is on this list. The Sega Saturn sold 10 million units and was supported for 3 - 5 years, depending on your region. It has some of the most coveted games and is currently one of the most expensive consoles to collect for. In terms of units sold, It was more successful than the Atari Jaguar, 3DO, CD-I, TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo AES, Dreamcast. Intellivision, FM Towns, ColecoVision and Magnavox Odyssey. Your lists should be based on some facts.
This. It had the second greatest games library ( after the Genesis) of any Sega console. As well as the best versions of Capcom 2D fighters on consoles( particularly if you had the ram cart) games like SF vs Xmen for example were vastly superior on the Saturn. Not to mention one of the best controllers in gaming history. "Worst console" my ass.

I thought the turbo express was fucking awesome. It sold poorly and was terribly priced, but it was very ambitious for the time and sounded awesome on paper.

Don't blame superior hardware of the Saturn for SEGA of America's multiple fumbles. They have messed up ever system launch since SEGA CD.

You actually realize it was not Sega America's fault completely. Most of the blame is on Sega of Japan. Sega ofJapan refused to listen to any advice Sega America gave them. They had the opportunity to work with both Sony and Microsoft on what would later become the Playstation and the Xbox. Sega Japan refused to even consider the idea. They had their heart set on the Saturn. Sega of America had no faith in the system from the onset. Sega of America also were not the ones pushing the sega cd and 32x addons. That again was sega of japan. They wanted to milk the system for all it was worth. I do like the dreamcast though. I owned one when it first came out. For me It failed because the Saturn left a major sour taste in people's mouth especially with regards to Sega as a company. Also there is no denying the fact it used CD's instead of DVD's was also a silly decision. It was a good system overall and I found it better then Gamecube. Not as good as PS2 though.

I think I might be the only person that enjoyed the Sega Saturn. Not a great console but also not one of the worst.

It wasn't the worst in terms of games and spec at the time but it, along with the Sega CD and 32x flooded an already saturated market, confused consumers, cost way too much and essentially set Sega back years. They almost made up for it with the Dreamcast (which is better than all of those combined) but they still ended up pulling out of the console market because of all the money lost on that nonsense.

It was very underrated in it's day but now people look back and realise how great it was, it's one of the most popular retro systems today and many of the games sell for very high prices.
Fishkeeper63 That's not much of a metric to determine popularity or quality though, considering almost every terrible video game system that existed and all the games have become a collector's items and sell for high prices because of their rarity, not because there is a spike in popularity.. Not that the Saturn was necessarily terrible. But a better way to measure it's popularity would be to look at how many people emulate the Saturn or something like that.
The 5200 wasn't even a new console. It was basically an Atari 400/800 computer with bigger cartridges and no keyboard. It had all the chips from the computers, just mapped in memory differently. So Atari released a new console with a 5 year old design. They would have been better off making it fully compatible with their 8-bit line, which they eventually did with the XEGS console.
Since you put up something before the video that showed the RCA Studio II, you should've added it b/c It is a pretty dysfunctional system b/c "Is this what you call controllers?" and the weird TV hookup.

I can understand why the other consoles were in this list, but Saturn? The SEGA Saturn was one of the most loved consoles of all time.

Yep, retro gaming is definitely better. No microtransactions, no having to pay real money to unlock stuff, no having to install the games. 2600, 7800, NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Turbo Grafx 16, Commodore, PS1, PS2.
Please, enough with the idea that old games didn't have bugs. That's not true as there are lots of famous bugs, sometimes gamebreaking, in classic games. Also, as games get larger and more complex, there will be more bugs and some that aren't spotted.

It had a few Sonic games, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Jam, and Sonic R... It's just that Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R were awful, while Sonic Jam was just the first three games and Sonic and Knuckles ported to the Saturn... Badly ported at that.
Natsume-Hime YEAH for sure, sonic jam is one of the extremely rare sonic games but the thing I like about it and fun fact, ya know the little 3D hub world that sonic runs around in, well believe it or not but that was with out a doubt a prototype for the game SONIC ADVENTURE for the dreamcast, so yeah that's what I like about sonic jam

The Saturn was NOT a bad console. The fact that SEGA fumbled the launch and horribly mismanaged the system through its short life in no way puts in a list of 10 worst anything.
That's your opinion. I think any console other then PS3 PS4 Xbox 1 or Xbox 360 are the only good consoles for our time. Back then though, I'm not sure.

+TrollBuster Agreed ! The system was hard to make games for but it had some of the best games of all time. I know Sonics is the "best"... But that system had Night into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon and many others. It has a BIG asking price too back then. VERY expensive.

A couple years ago my grandma came back from Florida and gave me a game console called the game wave I never played it nor did I ever look up to see if it was good or bad it came with multiple different variations of remotes all of them containing way to many buttons and I have yet to remember if I sold the thing or If it's still used as the doorstop it looked like somewhere around the house
I owned the Amiga CD 32 and it was actually pretty amazing. It had great games, good controllers and was very advanced for it's time.

The saturn is a great machine, but the engineers made it complicated and sega wouldnt port many of its better games to north america. Still the system has more class than the N64 and PS.

I had an R-Zone headset as a kid. I rather enjoyed it.. Especially when i got sick. I would just put it on play it for a lil while in bed all comfortable, then go to sleep. Wasnt the best system i know, but it had its ups as well as its downs.

+Tai Du I used to have that game for my Saturn. Unfortunately, it was an incredibly lazy port on Konami's part. Yes it had a new section to explore and also could play from the start as Maria or Richter, but it looked kinda blurry to me, and also had increased loading times, on a system that pretty much smoked the PS1 with 2D games.
That was inexcusable.
It's still an amazing game though.
Saturn got a bunch of inferior PS1 ports, like SotN which you just mentioned. That doesn't make it a good console, that just shows how terrible it is.
This is supposed to be about the worst consoles, not the "least successful." Saturn should never have been present. It was difficult to develop for, but had some AMAZING games. Oooo, no Sonic? Who cares, Sonic hasn't been a good series since Sonic and Knuckles. They went for unique, and created some of the greatest titles ever released on any Sega console...ever.
+Alexander Langella I couldn't agree more. The Sega Saturn is definitely one of my all time favorite consoles. Three of my all time favorite games, Shining Force III, Panzer Dragon Saga and Dragon Force were all on the Saturn.

I really wish I had a system. I did have the luck of having a friend with one, and every game that existed for it. Though at least I had the funds around the time the Dreamcast popped up, so I was able to experience that system. Panzer Dragoon Saga was just epic. Shame Sega wasn't wise enough to realize they had an audience and print extra copies, nor the foresight to assure the game code was kept safe, especially given the dedication of the fan community...pretty much every single person who has ever played or just play tested the game.
Shinning the Holy Ark I've heard good things about as well. Then there's the unique Lunar1 remake on the Saturn, which is distinct from the PSX version since it follows the original story, and doesn't contain the story changes. Plus it has unique overworld tilesets and the battles are slightly smoother.
At some point when I can start collecting again, the Saturn is the first system on my list.

I think a Sonic Saturn game could have been awesome provided that it stuck to a 2D plain. I just don't think that Sonic was as commercially critical for the Saturn in the Japanese market as it was in NA and Europe and Sonic Team was hard at work on Nights.
Nights is a fantastic game. I might even be inclined to say it's Sonic Team's greatest ever work. But it simply didn't have the mass appeal of sonic.

I have an Atari 5200. My cousin gave it to me after I posted on Facebook about an Atari 2600 reproduction system I got at a specialty game store. She said her husband had been bugging her to get rid of it so she offered it to me. Not only does it work but most of the games still had the boxes and documentation. It felt like Christmas.
