Dr. Peterson, one of the wisest things my father ever said to me when I was a young teenager was if you can only get what you want by telling a lie, then you are not smart enough to get it by telling the truth. Almost five decades later, it still resonates with me. I am able to identify many of those people who are not intelligent enough to know those who can see right through their nonsense, especially in a business or social situation. Generally, truth is very linear. Deception is fraught with holes and jumps around from conclusion to conclusion without a clear or proper proposition or premise.
His masterclass was probably the best one I’ve ever seen on the platform. His techniques helped me negotiate a wage at the very highest for my position working in a pizza shop over the summer. The masterclass subscription payed for itself!
Hey, Can you elaborate on what exactly did you do? I took his course but I found out that, for example, mirroring did not worked for me. As a meter of fact, I noticed Voss tried to do it with “perspicacity?” At 23:17 and it seems that it does not “worked” as expected.
Sounds like it helped you make your way to the top in a really tough and competitive arena. You were probably competing with 2 other high school students who would rather be at home gaming. This is the kind of case study that Voss should include in his marketing materials.

During the pandemic, I watched Chris Voss's masterclass and the advice of active listening, as well as noticing when someone is having a bad day, seemed like a miracle in helping me out of situations or getting help when help had previously seemed stagnant. I discovered Dr Peterson soon after and the life-changing events continued. Wow, such a treat to have them both in the same interview. Thanks so much!
I used Voss' book to win a five-figure negotiation with my former employer's lawyer. I was 22, anti-confrontational, and had zero experience with legal negotiations. I easily walked all over a professional lawyer and won 98% of the money I was owed without ever having to go to court and it only took two phone conversations. The government employee assigned to my case said she had never seen anyone get more than 15% in cases like mine. It was entirely thanks to Voss' book.
I have been reading Chris Voss's book and also following Dr Peterson for some time now and to hear both of their ideas come together and relate to one another is another type of feast in my mind ❤️
Lessons i've learnt:- 1) "Well i'm willing to learn and am coachable, and i wanna make everyone's life better" 18:44 2) "How can i be guaranteed to be involved in projects that are critical to our strategic future?" 19:24 3) When you ask a question that you really mean it. 24:35 4) Pressure makes diamonds, but you got to WANT to be a diamond. 24:51 5) "Well, i don't want to work too hard" = it's like you're not thinking about the work properly if that's your attitude because first of all, if you love what you're doing, you might really want to work hard, and if you don't love it, that means you don't see the point/end goal/value in it 25:36 6) Most of the meaning in people's lives comes from the adoption of voluntary responsibility, and most people do actually want to be diamonts. Through the cause and effect of our actions and consequences you will feel a sense of fulfillment when you're pursuing what's meaningful, and pain when you're not. I think it's useful to conceptualize that process as a personified entity, and it could fit some definitions for God.
thank you jordan . this episode really hit home and felt like something far more tangible for me to think about. i have been more willing to accept the catastrophe and act accordingly, it is a brutal world for the great majority man, and it feels good to see u take this conversation seriously. to have an interview be the meaning of whether u eat or not , is very frustrating as people abuse their authority . i have been far more predatory lately and refuse to feel sorry for it. im following my heart and thats that. thankful for 3 decades on this planet... and thankful that we have someone like you to go to before considering some watered down therapist/psychiatrist that leaves u feeling worse than when u came in. if i ever go to therapy and they say they dont know who you are , im walking right out. on my momma. thanks again.

Last week, I read Chris' book then I discovered this interview with JP. Two of my favorite people! I love how Chris smiles patiently while JP does his "thing". The professor and the cop hanging out. Onew that would've blocked off more radiation and UV light so that the cell or the DNA didn't degrade it as fast as it does today. It was noticed that after Noah's flood people stopped aging that long so that water layer might've been the water that fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. Our world has slowly become more and more poisoned and damaged the further we've come from the day of creation. Romans 8:22 says, "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time." All of creation is awaiting God's redemption not only of His people but also His world. As to why God was unhappy with Cain's offering: Genesis 4:3 says, "So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, 4 while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. 6“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” The clues are in the text. Abel brought the "best portions" while Cain brought "some of the fruit." When Cain felt the twinge of conviction instead of repenting and turning back towards God, he becomes angry, turns against God, gives himself over to sin (vs. 7) and shortly thereafter murders his brother in cold blood. Even after the murder, read the text carefully, he blame-shifts, denies and runs away rather than taking personal responsibility and repenting for his sin. The big question is: What do we do when we feel that twinge of conviction? What do we do when we KNOW we've done wrong? Do we run back to God and sincerely apologize and try from there on to do things according to His Word? Or do we run away, hide, blame-shift, deny we did anything wrong, etc? Choose carefully! Life is short but the afterlife is forever. You are immortal. You will live forever, somewhere. Choose life. Choose to run to Christ. He is the only way to God.

I remember interviewing for a job and I brought a series of printed images showing the types of engineering analysis I could do. We talked for a bit and I pulled out the papers and said, this is what I can do and this is what you say you need. Got the job immediately. This interview helped me understand why that worked so well.
I love Mr. Voss's comment about asking how to be guaranteed a position that is strategic and working on the most important things in the company. So many people just want a job out of the spotlight with little to no pressure with a good paycheck. In other words, hide out along the periphery while everyone else moves the company forward. If I ever got an inkling that this was the type of person I was talking to, I immediately terminated hiring interviews. Those that want to play in "the big game" and see the satisfaction and rewards of that are the most important people in a company.
Watching and listening to this interview, interestingly enough with a 'negotiator' whose key skill is 'listening', I couldn't help myself being distracted by how much Jordan Peterson loved hearing himself talking.... non-stop, with one take of breath... I would have loved to hear Chris Voss speak more - or more precisely, to be given the chance to speak more.
Agreed, I've seen this same thing with other guests as well, where I end up wishing I could have heard a lot more from the guest. I'm a big fan of JP, but many times he gives off the vibe of someone who believes he's the smartest one in the room, and thus deserves to speak the most and interrupt at will. Regardless of whether he's actually the smartest in the room, it's not a good look, and is not conducive to mutually beneficial discussion.
Yes, in specially this one, he interrupted too many times. Even when Chris Voss was trying to answer JP's own questions. We never got to the end of the answer... JP kept interrupting, to the point that even Voss got frustrated and said "You should come and coach meeee" 😄
Just before the 32 minute mark, Chris makes a joke about Jordan preparing him for his next job interview. I think Jordan realised in that moment he might be talking too much and then moved onto the next point/question about active listening. Could be a coincidence, but I suspect Chris was subtly communicating what we're expressing here.
I don’t think it was so “subtle” either if we all clearly noticed it!! 😁 Chris seemed to be amused at whether Jordan had invited him to take him “hostage” 🤭 But more seriously, for me JP’s main problem was that he was pretending to be listening but he wasn’t much interested in what Chris really had to say… It annoyed me: every time JP asked Chris a question about Chris’s experiences in Chris’s domain of expertise, JP kept hijacking the answers halfway through and turning them around into JP agendas or what and how JP does those things (“You know, and I know better”). Was it just me who thought we never heard the full answers to any of the questions before JP cut in and deviated?
this isn't the chris voss show, I came here to see what jp has to say about what he has to say. Though, yeah the conversation gets a little complicated but what do you expect less? from someone who had been working in academics they spend a lot of life talking and educating those, so maybe its time to find a different channel
Chris Voss is amazing. Calibrated how questions were difficult to adapt to at first, but once I got used to them, they really stump people aggressive and annoying people.
I feel this podcast woke me up. I have always been known for my ability and how I enjoy talking in public, and even tho that never ended because its a really big part of who I am, I have been very isolated lately and that kinda affected me strongly socially and mentally where I started feeling dumb. This made me extremely conscious every time I face a hard exercise or I had to talk in public (which is far from being "nervous" because I want, rather I eat myself with "I am losing them" or "I am not adding value" or "Im being unconscious on what matters here") so I ended up not feeling as confident but this podcast remind me of the basics of the values that I move on when I talk in public and helped me alligning the lessons with my personality

I like how Peterson genuinely listens and tries to make every last person he interviews or is interviewed by, stronger. Even when it's hostile, he's trying to build up whoever's opposite him. Such a rare talent, gift, tool, whatever.

For the last year or so I went back to my old job I was trying to get away from due to lack of bodies. It went from just covering to permanent. As someone who has managed a small business for many years I think one thing that younger people need to learn is that you should always work at the level you want to be paid at. If you have the mentality that you will only do the minimum because you are not paid a high wage then you will never be paid a high wage. Nobody will just give you a high position because you are a nice person. And if they did you would probably fail. The people that are at the top of organizations probably got there by doing more work than you would consider to be appropriate for what they were paid to do it. And they mostly do it because they want to do it, they want the business to be successful, not because they are paid well.
The people trying to apply Voss's advice are mostly inexperienced 20-year-olds who think his methods will enable them to become CEOs by age 21. It's for people who want a quick fix rather than being willing to put in the time, make sacrifices, and learn.

Hello Dr. Peterson, first off I would like to say, as a university psychology student from the Netherlands you have inspired me beyond measure and I thank you for the content you've put out. It has been a beacon for self improvement in my life, which I hope to share with others, professionally and privately. I've stumbled upon a video from Candace Owens holding certain beliefs on our field of mental healthcare and Freud that do not represent the consensus held within our field and which could possibly be damaging to it. As your content often overlaps, do you see any merit in having her on the platform to discuss the real and important place mental healthcare holds within our society today? I feel it would be an challenging, enlightning and encouraging for many that are struggling to find their way in life.
This was beautiful. I found the part about core values moving. 'A core value is what you would do even when it costs you.' Chris then elaborates on integrity, which is one of his core values. This makes me wonder about his opinion on what constitutes the highest value, and if integrity is this for Chris.

Finding it quite frustrating that Jordan is speaking so much more than Chris. Chris is an expert in the field and I'd love to be hearing more from him.
Blessed be the Holy Name of Jesus, which in this case is used by you as an expression of disappointment about another's man work that we're enjoying for free. Even if I used a normal person's name, it would be degradating. You wouldn't do it with the name of any of your friends. Also, it's illogic to do if you're a believer who fears God, and it's illogic if you're not a believer, to mention someone you don't even care about as if that mention makes your statement more... authoritative, or convincing? Was it written on a whim? If someone is so annoyed at another person's speaking that they simply want to lash out, I doubt they'd have enough patience and open-mindedness to enjoy this kind of talk anyway.
Most of us don't work in jobs where negotiation is even possible. Ask for a raise, get a no if they like you, get fired if they don't. Most of us have no leverage and never will.
Like Chris said, if you're not valued the way you think you should be, you're not going to change your boss, you need to change your job. These aren't tactics they are tools and can absolutely be used to explain your value to your boss or to someone else who will pay you more.
I started listening to this episode to listen to Mr. Voss, however, it was more of a lecture by Jordan instead. I did not finish the episode. We should hear more from the guests.
"Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss has had a profound impact on my life. A lot of what's in the book has become second nature to me and has helped me tremendously to get ahead. I wouldn't be where I'm at - negotiating big business deals for a living and being in the top 15% of salaries in my country at age 39 - if I headn't read that book. Being good at negotiating is a real-life superpower.

I would like to hear your story, believe it or not.
I have been reading Chris Voss's book and also following Dr Peterson for some time now and to hear both of their ideas come together and relate to one another is another type of feast in my mind ❤️
Lessons i've learnt:-
1) "Well i'm willing to learn and am coachable, and i wanna make everyone's life better" 18:44
2) "How can i be guaranteed to be involved in projects that are critical to our strategic future?" 19:24
3) When you ask a question that you really mean it. 24:35
4) Pressure makes diamonds, but you got to WANT to be a diamond. 24:51
5) "Well, i don't want to work too hard" = it's like you're not thinking about the work properly if that's your attitude because first of all, if you love what you're doing, you might really want to work hard, and if you don't love it, that means you don't see the point/end goal/value in it 25:36
6) Most of the meaning in people's lives comes from the adoption of voluntary responsibility, and most people do actually want to be diamonts. But they're afraid of the work and they're also afraid that it's going to be imposed on them and they're going to be forced into it. 26:07

Through the cause and effect of our actions and consequences you will feel a sense of fulfillment when you're pursuing what's meaningful, and pain when you're not. I think it's useful to conceptualize that process as a personified entity, and it could fit some definitions for God.

Of course, its so interesting that I am being a very attentive listener! So much in fact that I kept hearing a very quiet clicking sound in the background. So I switched to RUclips so I could see the video. I thought there must be a fireplace crackling in the background but didnt see one. 🤷🏼♀️ So then I thought I must have water in my phone speaker thats distorting the sound (I dropped my phone in the dishwater yesterday😅), until I realized that it was Dr. Petersons pen making the sound! 😆 I love this observation because I was so worried that I was suffering from hearing loss! 💕 My goodness, Im always learning something new here, in ways I never even expected! Last week, I read Chris' book then I discovered this interview with JP. Two of my favorite people! I love how Chris smiles patiently while JP does his "thing". The professor and the cop hanging out. But when JP summarized the message (at 93'), and Chris exclaimed, "That's right. My favorite phrase!" I about jumped out of my chair with joy. Thanks fellas.

I have been attending BSF ( Bible Study Fellowship) for over 15 years with one book or two for each year. And very helpful, but your depth of understanding how these stories still relate to each of us today . And thanking Tami too for sharing her journey !
Anyone figure out how/why they all lived to like 600 years old yet? Why was god unhappy with Cain's offering? Just because?
@@krvnjrcbs There's a theory that the world was covered in another layer made up of water, aside from the ozone layer. Onew that would've blocked off more radiation and UV light so that the cell or the DNA didn't degrade it as fast as it does today. It was noticed that after Noah's flood people stopped aging that long so that water layer might've been the water that fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights. For the Cain one only God knows really but there's some speculation
@@krvnjrcbs Shortly after God created the world people lived longer lives because the world was more pristine and their bodies (genes, DNA, etc) were not so damaged by environmental factors. Our world has slowly become more and more poisoned and damaged the further we've come from the day of creation. Romans 8:22 says, "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time." All of creation is awaiting God's redemption not only of His people but also His world.
As to why God was unhappy with Cain's offering: Genesis 4:3 says, "So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, 4 while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock.
And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
6“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”
The clues are in the text. Abel brought the "best portions" while Cain brought "some of the fruit." When Cain felt the twinge of conviction instead of repenting and turning back towards God, he becomes angry, turns against God, gives himself over to sin (vs. 7) and shortly thereafter murders his brother in cold blood. Even after the murder, read the text carefully, he blame-shifts, denies and runs away rather than taking personal responsibility and repenting for his sin.
The big question is: What do we do when we feel that twinge of conviction? What do we do when we KNOW we've done wrong? Do we run back to God and sincerely apologize and try from there on to do things according to His Word? Or do we run away, hide, blame-shift, deny we did anything wrong, etc? Choose carefully! Life is short but the afterlife is forever. You are immortal. You will live forever, somewhere. Choose life. Choose to run to Christ. He is the only way to God.

I remember interviewing for a job and I brought a series of printed images showing the types of engineering analysis I could do. We talked for a bit and I pulled out the papers and said, this is what I can do and this is what you say you need. Got the job immediately. This interview helped me understand why that worked so well.
You got to let Chris speak more. Your ideas are wonderful. I would mainly keep them for when you are the podcast guest
I love Mr. Voss's comment about asking how to be guaranteed a position that is strategic and working on the most important things in the company. So many people just want a job out of the spotlight with little to no pressure with a good paycheck. In other words, hide out along the periphery while everyone else moves the company forward. If I ever got an inkling that this was the type of person I was talking to, I immediately terminated hiring interviews. Those that want to play in "the big game" and see the satisfaction and rewards of that are the most important people in a company.

How did I miss this JP talk with Chris Voss? This just made my night.
Watching and listening to this interview, interestingly enough with a 'negotiator' whose key skill is 'listening', I couldn't help myself being distracted by how much Jordan Peterson loved hearing himself talking.... non-stop, with one take of breath... I would have loved to hear Chris Voss speak more - or more precisely, to be given the chance to speak more.
Agreed, I've seen this same thing with other guests as well, where I end up wishing I could have heard a lot more from the guest. I'm a big fan of JP, but many times he gives off the vibe of someone who believes he's the smartest one in the room, and thus deserves to speak the most and interrupt at will. Regardless of whether he's actually the smartest in the room, it's not a good look, and is not conducive to mutually beneficial discussion.
Yes, in specially this one, he interrupted too many times. Even when Chris Voss was trying to answer JP's own questions. We never got to the end of the answer... JP kept interrupting, to the point that even Voss got frustrated and said "You should come and coach meeee" 😄
Just before the 32 minute mark, Chris makes a joke about Jordan preparing him for his next job interview. I think Jordan realised in that moment he might be talking too much and then moved onto the next point/question about active listening. Could be a coincidence, but I suspect Chris was subtly communicating what we're expressing here.
I don’t think it was so “subtle” either if we all clearly noticed it!! 😁 Chris seemed to be amused at whether Jordan had invited him to take him “hostage” 🤭 But more seriously, for me JP’s main problem was that he was pretending to be listening but he wasn’t much interested in what Chris really had to say… It annoyed me: every time JP asked Chris a question about Chris’s experiences in Chris’s domain of expertise, JP kept hijacking the answers halfway through and turning them around into JP agendas or what and how JP does those things (“You know, and I know better”). Was it just me who thought we never heard the full answers to any of the questions before JP cut in and deviated?
this isn't the chris voss show, I came here to see what jp has to say about what he has to say. Though, yeah the conversation gets a little complicated but what do you expect less? from someone who had been working in academics they spend a lot of life talking and educating those, so maybe its time to find a different channel
Chris Voss is amazing. Calibrated how questions were difficult to adapt to at first, but once I got used to them, they really stump people aggressive and annoying people.

I feel this podcast woke me up. I have always been known for my ability and how I enjoy talking in public, and even tho that never ended because its a really big part of who I am, I have been very isolated lately and that kinda affected me strongly socially and mentally where I started feeling dumb. This made me extremely conscious every time I face a hard exercise or I had to talk in public (which is far from being "nervous" because I want, rather I eat myself with "I am losing them" or "I am not adding value" or "Im being unconscious on what matters here") so I ended up not feeling as confident but this podcast remind me of the basics of the values that I move on when I talk in public and helped me alligning the lessons with my personality
Good on you. Happy you’re waking up to your own value again. Keep finding ways to experience that. It so important.

What’s important is Chris Voss work to improve n discover how to communicate by staying curious while he only hires innovators to work on his team in at least one ☝️ aspect he mentions in this video by telling potential new hires he needs people who will take n give a lot like they want diamonds 💎 on his team requiring them to work hard.
I like how Peterson genuinely listens and tries to make every last person he interviews or is interviewed by, stronger. Even when it's hostile, he's trying to build up whoever's opposite him. Such a rare talent, gift, tool, whatever.
Jordan's interruptions are interesting, but I really wish he would let his guest speak more. I'm amazed at the patience Chris Voss shows during this interview.
“Hey Jordan, I’m going to have you coach me on my next job interview” is such a patient and gentle way of saying “remember that you’re interviewing me and haven’t asked me a question”
Chris sure demonstrates his ability to exercise his skills.
Jordan is more of a leader! Most people in this world don't have that. There are only a few of us! Leaders should always speak more because they have much more knowledge inside that people need to hear. Why do you think Jordan Peterson is extremely popular and this other guy is someone we don't even know? For the last year or so I went back to my old job I was trying to get away from due to lack of bodies. It went from just covering to permanent. As someone who has managed a small business for many years I think one thing that younger people need to learn is that you should always work at the level you want to be paid at. If you have the mentality that you will only do the minimum because you are not paid a high wage then you will never be paid a high wage. Nobody will just give you a high position because you are a nice person. And if they did you would probably fail. The people that are at the top of organizations probably got there by doing more work than you would consider to be appropriate for what they were paid to do it. And they mostly do it because they want to do it, they want the business to be successful, not because they are paid well.

The people trying to apply Voss's advice are mostly inexperienced 20-year-olds who think his methods will enable them to become CEOs by age 21. It's for people who want a quick fix rather than being willing to put in the time, make sacrifices, and learn.
His book Never Split the Difference is full of practical advice and techniques. I've already read it twice but I haven't memorized everything yet.

Hello Dr. Peterson, first off I would like to say, as a university psychology student from the Netherlands you have inspired me beyond measure and I thank you for the content you've put out. It has been a beacon for self improvement in my life, which I hope to share with others, professionally and privately. I've stumbled upon a video from Candace Owens holding certain beliefs on our field of mental healthcare and Freud that do not represent the consensus held within our field and which could possibly be damaging to it. As your content often overlaps, do you see any merit in having her on the platform to discuss the real and important place mental healthcare holds within our society today? I feel it would be an challenging, enlightning and encouraging for many that are struggling to find their way in life.

This was beautiful. I found the part about core values moving. 'A core value is what you would do even when it costs you.' Chris then elaborates on integrity, which is one of his core values. This makes me wonder about his opinion on what constitutes the highest value, and if integrity is this for Chris.

Blessed be the Holy Name of Jesus, which in this case is used by you as an expression of disappointment about another's man work that we're enjoying for free. Even if I used a normal person's name, it would be degradating. You wouldn't do it with the name of any of your friends. Also, it's illogic to do if you're a believer who fears God, and it's illogic if you're not a believer, to mention someone you don't even care about as if that mention makes your statement more... authoritative, or convincing? Was it written on a whim? If someone is so annoyed at another person's speaking that they simply want to lash out, I doubt they'd have enough patience and open-mindedness to enjoy this kind of talk anyway.

Most of us don't work in jobs where negotiation is even possible. Ask for a raise, get a no if they like you, get fired if they don't. Most of us have no leverage and never will.
Like Chris said, if you're not valued the way you think you should be, you're not going to change your boss, you need to change your job. These aren't tactics they are tools and can absolutely be used to explain your value to your boss or to someone else who will pay you more.
The boss will never fire you for asking for a raise. He will just laugh and your wage is the same as before.
I started listening to this episode to listen to Mr. Voss, however, it was more of a lecture by Jordan instead. I did not finish the episode. We should hear more from the guests.
"Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss has had a profound impact on my life. A lot of what's in the book has become second nature to me and has helped me tremendously to get ahead. I wouldn't be where I'm at - negotiating big business deals for a living and being in the top 15% of salaries in my country at age 39 - if I headn't read that book. Being good at negotiating is a real-life superpower.
I have been waiting so long for this interview. I did Chris Voss’ masterclass and it was excellent! Two titans in conversation!
