If you can find a submission in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or any other grappling sport that's more devastating than this one, I gotta see it. I've seen a ton of variations, but never seen anyone lock the body triangle and take the head like this. If you've got footage of this from another source, send it to me.
This is what we call the Executioner, and it's an absolute spine ripper. I originally learned it from my friend Scott "einstein" Epstein. He's also a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Eddie Bravo, and he has served as one of my mentors over the years. He calls this the Epstecutioner, but I call it the Executioner to bother him mostly. I've heard lots of names for some variations of this over the years: Dragon Sleeper being the chief among them.
Call it whatever you want, but remember you learned it from ole bmac :)

That is a very old forbidden Kotokan Judo choke. I learned it in 1994. It's not news, but it's very good you are showing it to people. There are many variants of that particular "forbidden" spine lock. The choke is incident; nobody wants a broken neck. Great variation. Thank you.

I love the art of grappling and love watching athletes perform at their highest levels. The issue I have with these "rare" submissions is - when videos like these are uploaded and you have these wannabe wrestlers/grapplers trying this tuff in fights or on each other. You just know there are a ton of dumb asses who pretend to know BJJ who practice this stuff on people. Even a very common guillotine choke can be very dangerous if done wrong.

So Hi there Brandon, the internet is good and bad. its great there is so much knowledge available but as black belts we have a responsibility for the techniques we teach. This isnt a heel hook or wrist lock its attacking the vertebrae in the neck and the spine. And truthfully most of us BJJ guys do not have the medical training to actually know the medical outcomes of the techniques we are using, all we know and care about is getting the tap/win. But 2 white belts or anyone for that matter could be cranking the H out of each other with this technique and could seriously injure or maim each other even where one would never walk again or have a family and that is not ok. I ask you to please reconsider that while most people have the common sense to be responsible some do not and certain techniques do not belong in sport jiu jitsu or on the internet for these reasons. Lastly most people in this technique dont realize the danger theyre in. As a white belt i tried escaping ankle locks and heel hooks and noone told me i would need knee surgery but i found out. so lets tell people atleast if you dont tap here the results could be permanent.

It is a VERY OLD move that goes back to both CATCH AND PRO WRESTLING. And of course pro wrestling evolved from catch wrestling. In both style of wrestling it is called the dragon sleeper. And in both style of wrestling you CAN do it with a body scissor(ie the guard). Although you could also do it standing up.

This is almost a show hold that would not work against a knowledgeable submission grappler. For instance, this would not work if someone tries to apply this to you as you are a very talented grappler.

One of my female students, who is a student of my student, also tried this, probably having learned it from you. I told her not to do it as it is a pro wrestling move. My student also claimed he was the first one to apply it in his gym, and only after that did his female student use it on a less experienced student-a six-month male student who practices for 2 hours once a week. My student first applied that submission against this female student who is at the intermediate level but she is a small girl. There is an argument going on in our class WhatsApp group about whether this is a legitimate submission or not. Then, by accident, my closest student and training partner found this and sent it to me. So far, this spine lock has been used in our group, but it has only happened two times, and the skill level gap was between intermediate and amateur levels. I said this is not a move that is in the book, and it is not practical compared to other back attacks. But it seems like they do not believe it. Then I said, okay, it is legit, but it is like trying a full-nelson from the back control, where you need much more effort with a higher risk of failure.

It depends on the competition. In 10th planet and CATCH WRESTLING(the father of BOTH pro and freestyle wrestling) this move is COMPLETELY LEGAL. This is especially true at Snake Pit Wigan(BRITISH STYLE catch wrestling). At Snake Pit Wigan DIRECT chokes are FORBIDDEN while INDIRECT CHOKES ARE LEGAL. And I think the front facelock(guillotine) and the dragon sleeper are legal.
