Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Movie Description:
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a story about a troubled young boy who finds out his father is a Greek god, making him a demigod. He and his friends are given the task of finding and returning Zeus's lightning bolt as monsters from the Underworld attempt to stop them.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (also known as Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) is a 2010 American action fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and written by Craig Titley, based on the 2005 novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The film is the first installment in the Percy Jackson film series. It stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson alongside an ensemble cast that includes Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Kevin McKidd, Joe Pantoliano, and Uma Thurman.
In 2004 20th Century Fox acquired the film rights to the book series. In 2007 Chris Columbus was hired to direct. Filming began April 2009 in Vancouver. Some shots were filmed in Tennessee and Las Vegas, and some exterior scenes were shot in New York.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released theatrically in the United States on February 12, 2010, by 20th Century Fox. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with criticism for the poor grasp of its source material and its script, but praise for Lerman and Jackson's performances, visual effects, and action sequences. The film grossed $226.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $95 million. It was released on June 29, 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. A video game based on the film was released for Nintendo DS on February 11, 2010. A sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released on August 7, 2013.

I enjoyed the books at the time it was published there was a bunch of high teen fantasy stuff, (teen angst and fights)
not a lot of it was mythology based so the books were a bit unique as a series. Almost like old school myths and badassery mixed with modern themes but staying close to the battle/myth stuff over it’s just a teen flick.
The movies felt extremely done for modern audiences and edited for more general audiences. The feeling of myths and significance sort of got washed out as ‘ya some superpower shit’ and like more room for the teen drama stuff and teen highschool drama tropes. - I think the effects are good and the movie is watchable but it has a totally different feel to the books and a very different set of events/setup for events which is just lost in the movies. Pacing and reveals are very different. You can read about a monsterous creature and have build up for them and it’s different and more significant then seeing a cgi creature on scene with little background info besides ‘it looks intense and scary like a mythical monster’

As a fan of the books, the original charm of the series was that they were 12-16 year old kids trying their best to survive the world of gods and monsters. It had a lot more depth and complexity than the movies. But my biggest gripe was that they dramatically changed the main 3 into characters that they’re not, they’re completely different in not just age (they’re 12 in the first book) but personality and their abilities. I like the movie alone, but as an adaptation? Absolutely not. I recommend the series whenever the whole series comes out, it does Immensely better in showing how the gods don’t care for their kids and how it fucked up all their children

Medusa was a beautiful lady and Poseidon wanted her. Poseidon tricks her into going into Athena's temple, then he forces himself on her. Instead of Athena punishing her uncle (Poseidon) she decided to curse Medusa, when Medusa's sisters stood up for her, that's when Athena cursed Medusa's sisters also. That's how they came to be the Gorgon sisters. Sad story.

I know that it would've really thrown things off, but I think that having the Giants be the villains of the original PJO would've worked better. The Giants got slapped around by the demigods all the time and didn't even need their direct godly counterpart to be defeated. And it got pointed out that the Giants really weren't that smart. If anything, Kronos was shown to be the crafty one. Him having the plan to pit the god's nature, and destroy the original Olympus, that sounds way more in line with a Kronos plan. Plus, he wasn't so much defeated as prevented from truly rising, so in comparison... yeah.

Heyyy, another PJO fan here ! Just to explain why the fanbase hates the movies : they are so much different from the original story that they kinda become an insult to the books. The cast made an amazing job with the script they were given, it's the crew behind the script that we resent. Just so you know, when Rick Riordan (the books' author) got the script, he sent a 20 pages-long explanation to the crew of what was wrong or simply didn't make any sense, what the crew changed from the book and therefore ruined, and how they could make it better. He even offered to help them improve the script, even though he was writing his next book, and the crew just ignored him.
As a kid, I really enjoyed the movie and didn't associate it with the book (because I could never remember the movie's name, but that's another problem) so I didn't see any problem, but I rewatched it as a young adult and I realized 1) how some parts of the plot make no sense (you mentionned some of those elements in your reaction btw) and 2) how they literally made another story using the same characters' names. So yeah, if you watch the movies without any knowledge of the books, they're not THAT bad ; but if you know the books and compare them, then they are horrendous (for example, they changed a lot of things in the MC's personalities and they butchered Grover's character, and yes I am still mad about it).
Now the series has only released 3-4 episodes yet and I am already feeling like I'm watching the characters that I've read about for years, even though then made some slight modifications : it's strange how an adaption can actually be called a good/faithful adaptation when the author has a say in it. 🙂

Through discussions with others there are basically two different types of reactions to this movie. If you read the books then watched the movie, you hate the movie. You watched the movie and enjoyed it so much you read the books to find out how different they were and probably had a similar reaction.
At the end of the day it is a decent movie, but the books (And the new TV show directed by the author) are peak fiction.

They're assigned a quest to get the bolt from Hades and return it to Olympus. There wasn’t a quest to find pearls. The characters just got into situations because of traveling delays. Many more minor issues but those are the major ones.

when i was young before I even read the books, this was one of my favorite movies as I was a greek mythology fan as a child. However, when I finally read the books years later was when I realized how incredibly inaccurate the movies were to the books. Good thing the new series is staying faithful to the events in the book despite the creative liberty changes they added and changed entirely. The new cast in the series definitely embodied the characters very well, definitely a good casting choice from both the director and the author himself.

Yeah I didn’t bother watching the movie. Once I saw the cover I knew I wouldn’t like it. It’s not just about completely changing Grover, but I did HATE that they cast him differently because Hollywood always does that with POC, like they’re throwing them a bone adding a smidge of “diversity”. But I hate most that they changed the AGE of the characters. There was MEANING to them being little kids and fighting an adults battle. It was literally in the book how they discussed most demigods don’t make it past their preteens or grow into adulthood because they get killed by monsters who detect them from a certain age. They’re literally almost adults already here.

  • @JigsawSaysHello
    @JigsawSaysHello Месяц назад

Differences from the book to the movie:
    - Annabeth is blonde with grey eyes
    - Percy had to be claimed by Poseidon, so he originally lived in the Hermes cabin with Luke, who is a son of Hermes. The Hermes cabin is used for demigods who haven't been claimed yet because he's a god of travelers (and thieves)
    - The underworld has *never* been described as hot and full of fire. There are a few rivers in the underworld and Persephone even has a garden down there.
    - Percy originally sent the head of Medusa to the gods, but the gods returned it to him so he uses it to aid in the murder of his stepdad
    - Percy originally left behind his mother, not Grover.
    - The oracle of Delphi gave a prophecy for the quest to happen.
    - "Their world" is just *the* world. The gods resign in the US (specifically New York)
    - Athena cabin was on Percy's side, he was supposed to be the defender of the flag but got ambushed by the Ares cabin. He did get healed by the lake, but only because Annabeth pushed him in it to heal him. He was claimed by Poseidon then.
    - Hades never showed up to camp, but he has been sending the three Furies to hunt him down so he can return the bolt
    - Luke gave him flying shoes in the hopes he would get dragged into Tartarus (where all the monsters come from). Percy gave Grover the flying shoe though, since flying isn't good for a child of the sea god (The sky is Zeus's domain, so he had every right to zap him out of the sky)
    - They ran out of time originally and had to fly in an airplane to return the bolt on time.
    - Luke, seeing that Percy came back safely, used a scorpion to kill him with venom in the forest, but it failed because he managed to get back to camp in time to survive
    - Percy fought Ares after escaping the underworld
    - Poseidon gave Percy the three pearls, he didn't have to hunt for them
    - they had to do a fetch quest for Ares to get back an item he lost while on a date with Aphrodite. Because they retrieved the item he lost, Ares gave them a means of transportation to get to LA in time
    - Poseidon can't speak to him like this. Percy figured out the Lotus scam on his own and had to beg Annabeth and Grover to leave
    - Charon (the underworld guide) only granted them passage because they promised they would ask Hades to give him a raise
    - Percy had to fight a Hellhound after the Capture the Flag game in the beginning
    - It was the summer. Persephone wasn't in the underworld. She is only in the underworld during winter and autumn, not spring and summer. It describes the changing of seasons. Demeter hates when Persephone is gone, so plants wither and die in her absence

Also some areas I go to have poor reception or actively block wireless signals and devices, so an old school ipod with no wifi.capability is perfect for me. My main gripe with the movies are how much they changed the main characters.
They also Cut alot of Key plot points and Content. Krono's was the mastermind behind everything in all the books.
They also Cut out that Ares was a main villian of the first movie.
They also completely cut out out that Annabeth was in love with Luke, and that him turning out to be a traitor completely destroyed her.
And So much More, rewatching this movie through your reaction Reminds of how Fucking stupid the Percy Jackson Movies are.
If you have the time i recommend reading the series. Theyre alot better than the movies or the show.

26:18 so glad you asked, avid percy jackson fan here. the movies are fine on their own-not great, but fine, sure-but they are remarkably, astoundingly unlike the books. for example: in the books, the hydra fight in nashville never happened, the characters were all aged 12, the relationships between gods and their children were much more nuanced and interesting, plot twists at the end were better set up and executed, the comedy was substantially funnier, the characters were more compelling,,, i could go on. the books were really good, so to see these mid movies with all the good stuff from the books taken out… it hurt our feeling fs 😂 luckily the show’s a LOT better, i hope you react to it!!!!

  • @Moon_lightnight

I like the movies as their stand alone, disconnected from the books as I watched the movies before I read the books. My biggest grip with the movies is it doesn't stay faithful to the books in any sort of way. They changed the entire plot of the movie, changed the characters and personalities to almost unrecognizable, and then altered the entire course of the books. As there is a reason for the ages in the books, of Percy starting off as 12 in the books, and ending as a 16th year old in the very last book. Making percy 16 alters things towards plot progression, and then they made the characters dull and way less interesting than in the books. While changing the story towards a story of hide & go seek for the pearls, while in the books they weren't that relevant and instead given as a gift. The books were more about a 12 year old being forced on a quest while learning the dangers of new world with his friends. They got rid of any depth towards the characters and the initial charm of the books, as you explore the world with percy. While percy in the books is witty, funny and loyal, they made him a blank slate, boring & unintresting. Annabeth, while smart and tactical, she was also a kid, that was stubborn, and funny, and just wants the acknowledgement from her mom. Grover, is an anxious, and funny, who just wants everything to go smoothly and get along
If you want to watch a more faithful adaption, so far the series on Disney Plus is doing a pretty good job, although still nervous. The movies are fine in their own right, but not when being an adaptation of the books. They don't show the humor, or the plot or anything really that makes the books great, of what their regarded as.

There are 5 books in the original series, there are sequel series set in the same universe as well as series focused around both Egyptian and Norse gods, also from the same universe. 21 total books if you don’t count the collections of short stories. Then Rick also sponsors authors from other cultures who write book series for the universe: African, Aztec, Hmong, etc myth. My favorite individual book is probably Mark of Athena or House of Hades from the Heroes of Olympus series.

Sure the writing isn’t the best and can be stale at sometimes and sure the cgi isn’t top notch but what did you expect from a kids movie in early 2000s.
