Almost like old school myths and badassery mixed with modern themes but staying close to the battle/myth stuff over it’s just a teen flick. Heyyy, another PJO fan here ! Just to explain why the fanbase hates the movies : they are so much different from the original story that they kinda become an insult to the books. The cast made an amazing job with the script they were given, it's the crew behind the script that we resent. Just so you know, when Rick Riordan (the books' author) got the script, he sent a 20 pages-long explanation to the crew of what was wrong or simply didn't make any sense, what the crew changed from the book and therefore ruined, and how they could make it better. He even offered to help them improve the script, even though he was writing his next book, and the crew just ignored him. As a kid, I really enjoyed the movie and didn't associate it with the book (because I could never remember the movie's name, but that's another problem) so I didn't see any problem, but I rewatched it as a young adult and I realized 1) how some parts of the plot make no sense (you mentionned some of those elements in your reaction btw) and 2) how they literally made another story using the same characters' names. So yeah, if you watch the movies without any knowledge of the books, they're not THAT bad ; but if you know the books and compare them, then they are horrendous (for example, they changed a lot of things in the MC's personalities and they butchered Grover's character, and yes I am still mad about it). Now the series has only released 3-4 episodes yet and I am already feeling like I'm watching the characters that I've read about for years, even though then made some slight modifications : it's strange how an adaption can actually be called a good/faithful adaptation when the author has a say in it. 🙂
Before I even watch your reaction, I was honestly surprised when I found out this movie had a lot of hate. I absolutely LOVED this as a kid. Sure the writing isn’t the best and can be stale at sometimes and sure the cgi isn’t top notch but what did you expect from a kids movie in early 2000s. Even movies not made specifically for kids in early 2000s had bad writing and cgi. Seems like people just want to hate to hate. As a kid I had a blast rewatching this over and over. Never got around to the 2nd one though too busy watching the first!
I have been to that Parthenon replica in Nashville and it’s pretty cool. As for Medusa, she was a beautiful being called a Gorgon. Poseidon lusted after her, pursued her, and “took” her, to put it gently, in one of Athena’s temple. Athena upset at the desecration turned Medusa into a monster so no one could look upon her again.
26:18 so glad you asked, avid percy jackson fan here. the movies are fine on their own-not great, but fine, sure-but they are remarkably, astoundingly unlike the books. for example: in the books, the hydra fight in nashville never happened, the characters were all aged 12, the relationships between gods and their children were much more nuanced and interesting, plot twists at the end were better set up and executed, the comedy was substantially funnier, the characters were more compelling,,, i could go on. the books were really good, so to see these mid movies with all the good stuff from the books taken out… it hurt our feeling fs 😂 luckily the show’s a LOT better, i hope you react to it!!!!
I watched the first movie, then read all the books and still liked the books better. The movies do have a lot of good qualities but they could be so much better. They just changed a lot of details in the plot, and eliminated so many good parts. Each book could be made into a mini-series.
@@jacklynch7802 I just found about this too! The cast for Percy and Anabeth were different from what was described in the books but other than that the series seem really good.
@@Reylien97 yeah, good from what ive watched so far, tbf annabeth and percys casting is differant but the actors are good for their age so its not too bad
It's very hard to believe this is by the same guy who did the first two Harry Potter films. It has the same basic story on the surface, but a very different attention to detail.
I LOVED this movie! After I saw it for the first time in theatres, I've read almost every Rick Riordan Mythology series: Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Aztec/Mayan etc. I'm REALLY hoping that Rick Riordan is planning to write a series based on Celtic/Irish Mythology.
I remember watching the first two in 6th grade before summer break, and I honestly liked it. I was 11 and wasn't into books and movies like this, but the class and I had a good time watching it.
19:20 context: Medusa was the priestess of Athena, Annabeth's mother and by a competition in which Poseidon lost, he *date* Medusa and Athena in her fury punished her with a curse which would not allow her to be seen in the eyes of anyone without turning into stone.
*read these books as a child and hates the movie but still gonna support you with a comment* Wow! WEIRD how Mell uploaded a video of talking about nothing and it was still charming and funny. I see no Percy Jackson movie, just Mell. So strange. 😅

Well never read the books or even heared of "Percy Jackson" but this was quite entertaining I love Greek, mythology. Hi Mellow love the new intro .until the next time ❤
The main major issue with the movies is that they changed the character ages and therefore had to change the plot. The characters are twelve in the books and therefore don't have access to cars. They're assigned a quest to get the bolt from Hades and return it to Olympus. There wasn’t a quest to find pearls. The characters just got into situations because of traveling delays. Many more minor issues but those are the major ones.
Omg yes thank you so much this has made my whole night. I love your videos so very much. Can you do rio movies and garfield movies and more alien movies. I really do not care what people say and think about the movies i still love and enjoy them a lot.
Wait, i just realized at 4:04 that Gabe 'smells like a sewer' bc his demigod powers are kicking in and Gabe's odor was repellant to gods and monsters 😂
I prefed the old movies to the series that are releasing on Disney+ each Tuesday. My kids like it but I can't stay in front of the screen for over 5 minutes without reaching for my cell phone.
I loved the books as a kid and I was so happy that they were making the movies. It was my first time going to a theatre to watch a movie. I was so excited, then the movie started. It is a decent movie but the plot changed so much from the books that it broke me. I genuinely felt so bad for Rick Riordan (The author of the books). Don't get me wrong, the movie is decent, but the books are so much better. The TV show is so similar to the books that I feel that childhood love for that series return. Through discussions with others there are basically two different types of reactions to this movie. If you read the books then watched the movie, you hate the movie. You watched the movie and enjoyed it so much you read the books to find out how different they were and probably had a similar reaction. At the end of the day it is a decent movie, but the books (And the new TV show directed by the author) are peak fiction.
Madusa got the snake hair after her and Poseidon banged in the temple of Athena. Athena got so pissed she did that to Madusa, i like to think Poseidon did that because of Athens
Definitely a guilty pleasure. The cast is fun, the effects are great, and the story is pretty basic. Popcorn movie for sure. The sequel is fun as well, if you haven't read the books.

because when you're critiquing a game or movie, you HAVE to compare it to similar media. but again i dont HATE it like a lot of people seem to.@@Kevkoil
@UltimateGamerCC You don't have to compare anything to anything if you don't want to. Adaptations, like Edgerunners (as an example), are completely capable of standing by itself. Why can't this?
They took everything that made Percy Jackson and threw it away, ignoring every single plot point that Riordan had established to make the series actually work.
My main gripe with the movies are how much they changed the main characters. They also Cut alot of Key plot points and Content. Krono's was the mastermind behind everything in all the books. They also Cut out that Ares was a main villian of the first movie. They also completely cut out out that Annabeth was in love with Luke, and that him turning out to be a traitor completely destroyed her. And So much More, rewatching this movie through your reaction Reminds of how Fucking stupid the Percy Jackson Movies are. If you have the time i recommend reading the series. Theyre alot better than the movies or the show.
So I saw the movies before I read the books. Now I'm a massive book fan. And as I found it to be a fine movie in isolation, as an adaptation, it fails so hard. It's insulting. The characters, especially the main 3, are almost unrecognisable from their book counterparts. The first movie was alright but then the second movie goes nuts with the story 😂 there are too many changes to cover, lol. But a lot of book fans still enjoy the casino scene in the movie. It's pretty fun
I grew up loving the books and actually really enjoyed the movies as well. Yes there’s a lot of differences between the books and the movies but there is with lots of franchises it’s all about separation between the two. But I gotta say even though the series is only 3 episodes in so far I’m loving it
From someone who owns a completely tattered set of Percy jacksons books from all the times ive reread them, i honestly havent got a problem with the films. Theyre fun, and theres a new series out ayways, not to mention the books will always be there to be read, me personally, i think the films are fine even tho they kinda stray a mile away from the source 😂
I like the movies as their stand alone, disconnected from the books as I watched the movies before I read the books. My biggest grip with the movies is it doesn't stay faithful to the books in any sort of way. They changed the entire plot of the movie, changed the characters and personalities to almost unrecognizable, and then altered the entire course of the books. As there is a reason for the ages in the books, of Percy starting off as 12 in the books, and ending as a 16th year old in the very last book. Making percy 16 alters things towards plot progression, and then they made the characters dull and way less interesting than in the books. While changing the story towards a story of hide & go seek for the pearls, while in the books they weren't that relevant and instead given as a gift. The books were more about a 12 year old being forced on a quest while learning the dangers of new world with his friends. They got rid of any depth towards the characters and the initial charm of the books, as you explore the world with percy. While percy in the books is witty, funny and loyal, they made him a blank slate, boring & unintresting. Annabeth, while smart and tactical, she was also a kid, that was stubborn, and funny, and just wants the acknowledgement from her mom. Grover, is an anxious, and funny, who just wants everything to go smoothly and get along If you want to watch a more faithful adaption, so far the series on Disney Plus is doing a pretty good job, although still nervous. The movies are fine in their own right, but not when being an adaptation of the books. They don't show the humor, or the plot or anything really that makes the books great, of what their regarded as.
I still use an ipod classic, mostly for the extra storage space and the presence of physical buttons so I can feel what I'm doing if I need to pause or skip or anything like that while driving. Also some areas I go to have poor reception or actively block wireless signals and devices, so an old school ipod with no wifi.capability is perfect for me. I wish they'd bring them back so I don't have to worry about what happens if mine breaks or gets stolen or lost.
when i was young before I even read the books, this was one of my favorite movies as I was a greek mythology fan as a child. However, when I finally read the books years later was when I realized how incredibly inaccurate the movies were to the books. Good thing the new series is staying faithful to the events in the book despite the creative liberty changes they added and changed entirely. The new cast in the series definitely embodied the characters very well, definitely a good casting choice from both the director and the author himself.
Idky but in the seventh grade our reading curriculum was all about Greek mythology. The whole year we spent learning about it and reading the Percy Jackson books.
I hate is bc it changes mostly everything, you don’t see any of the other important characters like in the first book, they don’t even explain things well either, they also cut out a lot of stuff for no reason
Man, they mess up with Hades so much in this movie. The characters are also nothing like their book version (personality’s wise), and they changed some key elements of the plot. As a movie, is not that bad but as an adaptation is honestly insulting. Even worse is that they did a scene by the book in the trailers… and then didn’t use it.
As someone who hasn't read the books, I love the Percy Jackson's movies. I can understand the hate because it's not like the books but as people say, If you think about the movies as their own thing, you'll enjoy them. I've never read any book thats had a movie adaptation but I have seen all the movies based on books, and I love them lol.
There are 5 books in the original series, there are sequel series set in the same universe as well as series focused around both Egyptian and Norse gods, also from the same universe. 21 total books if you don’t count the collections of short stories. Then Rick also sponsors authors from other cultures who write book series for the universe: African, Aztec, Hmong, etc myth. My favorite individual book is probably Mark of Athena or House of Hades from the Heroes of Olympus series.
Let me be the first of many to say I LOVE the books and HATE the movies. The books have such a unique, modern spin on Greek mythology that was completely thrown out the window in the movies. They’re not as bad as Last Airbender or Eragon but that’s really not saying much. This really could’ve been something special but they made it as bland as they could. Changes need to happen for adaptations but none of the ones they made make any sense whatsoever.
@@abc.animal5143 Yea it was alright but it was described much better and slightly different in the books. At least that’s how I remember it, it’s been a long time since I read the books.

I’m actually crying “I was like did he just call him pussy?” Then he said basically the same shit a few seconds later😂
“How did you even hide that under there”. A question we’ve all asked since we were kids😂
They are rn, disney are dropping an episode a week rn and the books author is one of the series main writers
Bro, I just started the lightning and book and rewatching this movie I was like... "Bro, it did a 360"
The Lotus Casino scene is the one universally appreciated scene. It is nothing like the books, but it was pretty fun.
I love the last book it ties the overall theme of the story together perfectly and it’s the most action packed ❤️❤️
About your clothes question, in the book, It's really funny because they only have one (1) orange shirt.
I love how everything Mell thought out loud prediction wise came true seconds after in the movie😂
So strange. 😅
the thing with the arrows made me mad everytime lol
so true, walk behind them its basic safety
new here, just wanted to say I really dug that intro at the very beginning, so friendly and had all the best vibes, just watching a movie with my pals lol
I haven't laughed this much in a long time this dude is hilarious 😂😂😂😂
I can open my eyes under water but I can't go under without holding my nose. Idk how people do it without
Wait, i just realized at 4:04 that Gabe 'smells like a sewer' bc his demigod powers are kicking in and Gabe's odor was repellant to gods and monsters 😂
YESSS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
The fact he didn’t know Medusa’s orgin is killing me…
in the last olympian, percy can make his own personal hurricane, which he uses against Hyperion, the titan of the sun
12:00 I’m sorry but that question and respond broke me 😂😂😂
I used to be obsessed with this movie and I had a crush on Alexandra Daddario since this movie, she has crazy beautiful eyes
Literally same, she is soooooo underrated and gorgeous ❤❤
I prefed the old movies to the series that are releasing on Disney+ each Tuesday. My kids like it but I can't stay in front of the screen for over 5 minutes without reaching for my cell phone.
Agree, the show is mid
36:24 you're thinking of aphrodite lol athena is the goddess of wisdom and strategy
Maybe I’m just lonely but the intro made me feel so included 😭 I love mellow man
Madusa got the snake hair after her and Poseidon banged in the temple of Athena. Athena got so pissed she did that to Madusa, i like to think Poseidon did that because of Athens
3:09 I thought bro was a student for a second bro 💀💀💀
Definitely a guilty pleasure. The cast is fun, the effects are great, and the story is pretty basic. Popcorn movie for sure. The sequel is fun as well, if you haven't read the books.
Bruhh😂😂 11:50 took me out I had to run it back at least five times 🤣🤣that was the perfect 💯 and on that note: Mellow please PLEASE tell me you've seen Desperado
the that you said IM put Persephone on Hades body had me dying of laugher lol.
i didnt HATE Percy Jackson myself, i just felt it could be better. especially when it is riding the coat tails of series like Harry Potter. instead of "You're A Wizard, Harry!" we got "You're A Greek Demigod, Percy!" and it just doesnt have the same "oomph".
I never understood this why don’t people judge something for what it’s for instead of comparing it to everything else
because when you're critiquing a game or movie, you HAVE to compare it to similar media. but again i dont HATE it like a lot of people seem to.@@Kevkoil
harry potter copied star wars too
@UltimateGamerCC You don't have to compare anything to anything if you don't want to. Adaptations, like Edgerunners (as an example), are completely capable of standing by itself. Why can't this?
They took everything that made Percy Jackson and threw it away, ignoring every single plot point that Riordan had established to make the series actually work.
a man who can identify a former James Bond gets an instant subscribe!!
3:22 The burn! 😂
15:15 it would have been funny if he was playing one of the god of war games and made a funny comment about how mortal conceive Greek myths
Let's get a follow up into the 2nd movie. Love the reaction!
Pretty fair opinion on the movie, definitely didn’t capture the magic of the books
Hey mello great reaction as always hope your Christmas was blessed hope you have a wonderful new year😊
So I saw the movies before I read the books.
Grover's dancing in the reason why I still haven't watched this movie all the way through; it made my eyes bleed.
I grew up loving the books and actually really enjoyed the movies as well. Yes there’s a lot of differences between the books and the movies but there is with lots of franchises it’s all about separation between the two. But I gotta say even though the series is only 3 episodes in so far I’m loving it
I'm not enjoying the series... yes, they're a little bit more faithful, but everything is so boring... I kinda hate it...
I can't wait to see the Olympus in the show. The show has not missed when it comes to sets.
Awesome reaction of my favorite Percy Jackson movie!!!!😊😊😊😊
Only reason to watch this movie is Alexandra daddario, those eyes 😍 omg she is literally perfect ❤
4:13 i just died 💀😂😭 everything ab 2 change 🐱 everything
I think the worst thing about movies is how they butchered the characters. Honestly Percy's portrayal was the only passable one.
Ngl I can’t bring myself to even watch the movies, I can only watch reactions of it cause I get bored 15 mins in if I’m not watching someones reaction
Not me in my youth thinking this was a top tier movie but now as an adult folks talking about the movie was hated 😅.
Grover, is an anxious, and funny, who just wants everything to go smoothly and get along
If you want to watch a more faithful adaption, so far the series on Disney Plus is doing a pretty good job, although still nervous.
They actually have a series out on Disney plus now
I love it when it’s 14:18 and you’re like not the food 😂
when i was young before I even read the books, this was one of my favorite movies as I was a greek mythology fan as a child.
6:45 I've watched the first episode so far, and it's really good! 🙏🏽💪
i’ve never seen the movies because i heard how drastically they diverged from the books…now, i’m so glad i never did, because what the hell is this😭
The new show is on point! Please watch it! It's what they should have been from the beginning
You should watch the Disney+ series next, you need to experience a more faithful adaptation now, like you did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I loved this movie! It was something needed during my childhood. As well as City of Bones
That pig made it back into the matrix!!!! Yooooo he actually did it! I thought he died!
Honestly I never read the books before this movie and I loved this back in the day still a guilty pleasure tbh
I've never read the books but the new Percy Jackson TV show makes these movies look 10 times better in my head
The only good scene in the first movie was the Casino. I thought that one was alright.
@@abc.animal5143 Yea it was alright but it was described much better and slightly different in the books. At least that’s how I remember it, it’s been a long time since I read the books.
@@SLITHERIS yeah. But i love the fact that they used Poker Face for the scene. Iconic.
@@SLITHERISit’s a book ofc it’s better and more descriptive than a movie
@@CategoryFive5 Some movies are more descriptive than some books (I mean “descriptive” as in a lot of important details that keep the viewer engaged and entertained). You’re able to add much more visual details to a movie whereas with a book you have to rely on the worded details and use your own mind to visualize those details.
I didn't read the books until now I'm about half way through the first one. And now I see why people hated them the series is much more similar not perfectly but very close.
