"Do you think they were afraid to show a girl bullying a boy in a not-hot way, with no sexual tension?" See, the series (yes I saw the disclaimer that this was recorded in July but I still want to say) wasn't afraid to do that! ...However, that hasn't stopped at least one person from saying, "Can't wait for Percy and Clarisse's enemies-to-lovers arc."
Unfortunately the internet is primed to see romance between any characters that have an argument (provided those characters are of the opposite genders) And also we're obsessed with spotting tropes! Which can be a good thing, it means our analysis brain is at least somewhat functional. But if it doesn't go beyond that it's a bit sad.
Yeah more often than not bullying is just bullying. Enemies to Lovers is an iconic trope for a reason (Pride and Prejudice, Beauty and the Beast, Red, White and Royal Blue) but physical violence and verbal cruelty (even when motivated by unexpressed desire) is not a foundation for a relationship of mutual respect.
@@polinaignatenkova3634my guy the internet is even more primed to do that with characters of the same gender like look at literally any rival characters Naruto and sasuke the doctor and the master sonic and shadow etc
@@Duderocks1151 The Doctor and the Master were childhood friends so that adds another dimension. I could probably rank each Doctor and Master by which is most to least likely to want to friend-hug and make up, or kiss and make up. (Whittaker is low on the Doctor list regardless; she wants no affection from the Master.)
DUDE they didnt mention the fact that in the movie, Sally Jackson is referred to as "Sally Ugliano". this is insane because they made it a point in the book that she specifically kept her last name when she married Gabe because its a way better last name and one of the few things she was able to stand up to him about, this change was so needless and dumb in so many ways, it sucks
I'm so glad they took their time to make that change. It was such a small detail that they could just be called Sally Jackson, like who cares, but no, they literally stated her name was Ugliano just because it goes against the book and they were on a roll with that.
I never noticed that and I honestly think that is now the change i am the most mad about. Everything else is just annoying and inaccurate but that is straight up disrespectful to one of the strongest characters in the whole franchise and to her entire purpose as a woman who makes hard sacrifices but constantly stays true to herself and her son
I do love that in the later books, Percy very explicitly only really likes/tolerates like two gods, Poseidon and Hestia. He tolerates Poseidon and does make an effort to be a little less cold to him because he's his dad (and also because hes the only son of Poseidon and Neptune so he gets a lot of attention/support compared to other demigods). Hestia he likes because shes the only god thats never made his life worse in any regard. I'm not sure what book it is, but there is a book where Percy is talking about all the gods in detail and he starts by saying that he's tired of Zeus getting so much attention (because he sucks) and goes "No, we're gonna do ladies first." And instead of starting with Hera (not to start another Troy situation, but arguably the most important goddess in the pantheon), or Athena (the mother of his girlfriend), and he jumps straight to Hestia. It's such a small and petty thing and I love it entirely.
It always throws me for a loop when I see the actual people behind animated voices. Hearing Red's voice come out of a non-animated face is throwing me in such a fun way.
21:51 Okay but both stories of Hephestus being thrown off Olympus being in the Illiad makes me wonder if, instead of no canon, ALL of them are true and Hephestus has been yeeted off a mountain multiple times. (I know that's not the case, but it made me laugh).
You know what would be a fitting yet HYSTERICAL depiction for Athena in a modern setting? She's got the toga, the sandals, and all that. But on TOP of it, she's COMPLETELY kitted out in tacti-cool milspec gear like a flak vest and all that. She's still got the Aegis, but she's also strapped with an M16 and a Colt 1911. I just love the idea that she might maintain some fashion sense from her ancient ideals, but also recognizes the advances in military tactics and DOES keep up with them.
Tbf, they do acknowledge in Heroes of Olympus that guns exist for demigods. Piper finds a shotgun designed to fire celestial bronze and she chooses her dagger over that. Halfbloods really just prefer traditional weapons I suppose.
@@DParkerNunya Oh, I would be supremely disappointed if they DIDN'T have some holy irons in the armory. My comment was more about just the absurdity of the visual. At the same time, I could easily see someone like Heracles still wanting a level of mythos and vintage but also loving new toys and rolling around with a classic '73 Winchester. Or Epimetheus using a muzzle loading musket.
@hartthorn Fair, and to your credit, it's introduction is also very funny, because this comes after watching an entire war in the first 5 books, and then the reveal that there is this monster killing shotgun that has just been sitting on a shelf gathering dust and then our current POV character ALSO passes it over for a dagger because of the Aesthetic™
I'll never forget the clip of Luke's Cabin (cause for whatever reason he has like his own mancave in the Hermes house) and he's supposed to be playing MW2, but they just have pictures of the killstreaks on his multiple monitors. Luke went from a complicated and nuanced villain to just a gamer bro.
@@notmyfantasypodcast I think the implication is that since Hermes is a thief Luke shoplifted all those monitors. It’s dumb, and MW2’s popularity was at its peak so it was a shameless “look at how cool and relatable Luke is” to the teen audience they were shooting for
When Percy first met Hades, it was also the very first time that he felt the actual presence and power of a god. That was even after he met Ares and Dionysus. The sheer aura that Percy felt from Hades was so much more powerful than the other two gods, that he was briefly overwhelmed by it, and that's without the influence of the Helm of Darkness because...well it was also stolen Hades actually got VERY insulted when he was accused of stealing the Master Bolt, and wanted to start a new war to expand his kingdom. In fact, he started complaining that he had TOO many subjects, and too little room. He also stated that he wasn't as rich as everyone thinks he is anymore because he kept having to start projects in expanding the Underworld for all the souls to live in. It's akin to having too many workers, and a good number of them are asking for a raise It's actually stated that Charon DOES indeed take other forms of money, he doesn't exclusively take drachma coins
one of my favorite little details in the Riordanverse is this; in Lightning Thief, they're in Lotus Hotel and Casino. in Kane Chronicles (the ones with the egyptian gods) Khonsu casually mentions how he owns a casino in Vegas. Khonsu, god of the moon- but also time and gambling. the exact casino he owns is never named, but considering this one is called _Lotus_ I think we can all guess (extra fun fact; there used to be a Lotus Casino in Vegas - but it shut down decades ago)
@@whiteraven562 yeah i fully was very confused for the first interactions between them because of Anabeth just having the role of Clarisse and not doing anything that would fit her character in the books
And then the sequel randomly does include her, while simultaneously making Annabeth a complete nothing character (because those writers can’t make a character of Annie’s archetype interesting); in THAT film I can at least see why people saw Percy/Clarisse subtext, because Logan and Alexandra had even less chemistry than in THIS film comparatively…
Just as a note from an absolute nerd of the series, the Roman/Greeks are the only combined pantheon. It’s set up that all the other pantheon are separate entities that are segregated to a degree. The Egyptians are in Brooklyn, Norse in Boston, Olympians in Manhattan. It’s implied that the pantheons are aware of each other and actively work to stay separated.
In fact in the short stories where the Egyptian and Greek characters meet it’s a plot point that Greek and Egyptian powers and magic l are volatile when mixed.
I suppose this is my least favorite change since it’s the one the springs to my mind the most often. It may seem minor to some though. Riptide, Percy’s sword is disguised as a ballpoint pen *with a cap* in the books nearly every time Percy draws his sword it states “I uncapped Riptide.” In the movies it’s a goddamn safety hazard! They turned it into a click pen where the blade comes out the spot where you click it. Literally anyone holding the thing like how most people would casually hold a click pen is liable to get themselves impaled on the thing. Yes this is a minor change….in the first book. However, in the Heroes of Olympus series Percy finds out what happens when you stick the cap onto the pommel of the sword…it turns back into a pen and is actually usable as a writing implement. Which at the time they find this out contributes to saving their lives in a way. This one change would technically get them killed later because this version of the sword literally cannot be used to write with.
@@ironicvoices4364Litterally, one of the things I always do with click pens is take them apart and put them back together. I can’t even imagine how this version of Riptide would even respond to that 😂
Honestly, Medusephone might be the best thing to come out of these movies. The implications of the pearls didn't occur to me till now, but I will run with it.
53:00 ADHD is actually a bit interesting in cases for Martial Arts, and the way Riordan describes it is actually something that people can notice. Being able to acknowledge the entire environment but focusing a lot on who you are fighting/sparring with. Obviously not going to be the case for everyone and it won't give you super powers, but still interesting. The Dyslexia thing I can't say one way or the other.
42:40 Not gonna lie, maybe part of the appeal of the books growing up was getting to go to a camp full of other ADHD kids. (Also the rad powers and whatever but the ADHD was definitely an aspect of it.)
18:41 Ancient Greeks thought the land sat atop the sea, so earthquakes were the result of the sea underneath moving. They also thought horses came from the seafoam of crashing waves... ergo as God of the Sea Poseidon has dominion over earthquakes and horses... It only makes no sense to modern understandings of the world.
I _deeply_ appreciate the callouts to the musical. The songs are such bops. I've seen the musical twice: the touring cast at the Kennedy Center, and a community youth theatre group in my area. It's sooo fun! MAYBE IF I'D BEEN A LITTLE BIT BRAVER MAYBE IF I'D STAYED BEHIND TO FIGHT BUT "MAYBE" DOESN'T LET ME GO BACK AND SAVE HERRR "MAYBE" DOESN'T MAKE IT ALL RIIIGHT
So, with Hollywood's attempts to sex this story up... I'm reminded of how that was just the general "culture" of the 2000s overall. Things were just unnecessarily sexed up all over the place. Fashion, music, movies, everything was just hyper-sexual in that decade (partly a reaction to the family friendly 1980s and the X-treme but child friendly 1990s. Not that there isn't still an element of that today--it's just very toned down today compared to the 2000s and there's a clear backlash to such things now, compared to then when there was more of an "Anything Goes" laissez faire attitude.
Yes, pop culture was very sexed up in that era, I definitely see that when looking back on my high school years! Never thought about it as a reaction to the 90s but I love that take.
I never read Percy Jackson but I adore Magnus Chase. Odin in Norse myth is just a weird little guy with random hyperfixations on learning and I love him so much and Magnus Chase is the perfect interpretation. The only thing I miss is that in old Norse myth Odin did gay magic and he doesn't in the books.
@@AishathFauzaaIbrahim my favorite part of the first book lol. Odin inspired Gandalf so it's so refreshing to just get a version where he's an old, wizardly meddler dude who is generally good but really tricky lol
I'm not even sure what my least favourite change is, there's so many bad ones. Probably the decision to turn a large chunk of it into the pearl fetch quest, but it's a close call to make the top of a *long* list.
Okay I know this is like, small potatoes, but it bothers me unreasonably, but worst part for me is that line, I know I have strong feelings about you I just can't tell if they are good or bad yet 😶
At least the miniseries is watchable. Has a few changes that aren't bad, just different. Fuck the movie though. I only wish it got a third because I have a deep curiosity of what they could possibly do after the way the sea of monsters movie ends
I'm not claiming insider knowledge, this is me repeating a rumor I heard on tumblr: Allegedly the movies were pushed for bc one of the film exec's kids was super into the books. Which makes me ask... *Why* were they made like this? Why shill out so much for A-list actors instead of making them mid or low budget movies made directly for the audience that loves the books? Hire a bunch of character actors who will ask for a fraction of Sean Bean or Rosario Dawson charge & use the budget on the special effects. None of the normies who would want to see A-list actors remember this film even happened; it's exclusively remembered by fans of the books or of pop Greek mythology. The answer of course is that capitalist demands for growth are antithetical to even sensible business decisions.
Amazing that you got Red on here! As for Poseidon and horses, please someone correct me if I am wrong, but Poiseidon and Athena invented the chariot, Po took the crashing waves and turned them into horses and Athena made the cart. But then the people of this new city that they granted this to were like, 'this is nice, but can we have more and we will nameour city after the god who does the best.' Athena made the olive tree and Poseidon made a saltwater fountain, and the city chose olives ala Athens, and thus Poseidon came to resent Athena. Fast forward we get to Poseidon assaulting one of Athena's temple maidens (Medusa) in spite, fast forward again and when Medusa is slain, she gives birth to Poseidon's son Pegasus, the winged horse. So yea lots of nonsense.
One more thing, In the "original" version of the myth, Poseidon isn't really involved in medusas story at all. She was just born a gorgon, hence gorgon sisters.
I’m having a stunning disconnect where I’ve only seen Red’s face like once before and the fact that she’s not a cartoon is a lil uncanny👀 love this chat, hate these movies, want to dance like Uma Thurman
Now that the show is coming out (and it's incredible so far, waiting for episodes 7 and 8) I'm down for a good ole' trashing of the movies. The odd thing is that some relatively small but very vocal groups of people have been popping into existance as vehement defenders of the movies. Mostly because they think the show is worse since it "changes things therefore unfaithful adaptation therefore trash." What these people have unfortunately failed to grasp is that the show's changes actually serve to improve the story and bring to the forefront character arcs, story threads and themes that Rick Riordan only really explored in the last couple entries in the book series, thus giving them more time to develop, deepen and expand in the TV show for future seasons (fingers crossed we actually get them). Whereas the movies ONLY ever changed things for the worse. They cut out important characters and plotlines OR added late-book elements so prematurely and out of nowhere that everything broke as a result. The filmmakers misunderstood the target audience, botched the tone and humour, completely butchered the characters and their dynamics, broke their self-established worldbuilding and magic system rules several times... Literally nothing was done right and everyone used to know that. I hope these contrarian people come back to their senses after the whole first season of the show is out and maybe people like you add to the public discourse in a way that opens more eyes to understand how good we are having it right now as fans of PJO and Rick's books.
So far from what I've seen of the show the changes it makes are to adapt the story to a TV medium and tell the story at a tighter pace whereas the movie changes aren't smart. Source material will always need to change but you gotta keep the spirit. So far the show seems to do that.
@@notmyfantasypodcast Yes! I fully agree. I've already written at least a dozen analytical 2000+ character comments on youtube and instagram about how the changes in the show have been very intentional and very effective in translating a 1st person perspective kids'/YA book narrative onto the screen. It's clearly something Rick was personally very involved with. So far the writing shows his hindisght from having completed the books and having a couple decades to think about what was successful versus what he would do slightly differently. And it truly feels like a loving tribute to Percy's story and the readers. Crafted with care, unlike the movie as you talked about at the end of this episode
When they're going over the gods and monsters in the first part, I already know exactly what Red's bound to point out cuz I've watched all her videos about this stuff many many times.😄 Also I also stopped reading two books into when they got into the Roman gods stuff. I was getting a bit old for it and it just started getting a little convoluted.
In my mind, the reason that the Percy Jackson movies failed is because, instead of adapting the source material for a new audience of middle schoolers, they adapted the source material to appeal for an older audience (high schoolers).
I was trying to figure out why none of this was ringing a bell to me when I remembered that I haven't actually seen the movie. I went with my girlfriend at the time and she walked out about 30 min in.
Book Percy is the kind of guy who, when realizing the husband of his mother has physically abused her, gives her a weapon with which to defend herself. It’s grim but it works. Movie Percy is the kind of guy who personally rigs a weapon to go off when a door is opened, because the movie writers wanted to make him look like a mischievous li’l scamp, but accidentally landed on “murderer” instead. It’s morbid.
As a book reader I found the movies are terrible. To make matters worse, there is a generation that thinks these movies are what Percy Jackson is about. It makes me sad because the show is so much closer to the story that is meant to be about. However, these “movie fans” insist the show is terrible. And it’s not!
If there's anything I'll give the movie over the show, they actually made Gabe the piece of garbage he is. From what I've seen of the show so far (less than I'd like), he's just kinda shitty. This is probably cuz Disney is Disney, but still.
@@DParkerNunya Personally at first I was kinda mad that Gabe was a loser that was absolutely stupid instead of an abuser because I felt it impacted Percy a lot but then I heard my teacher say “I like how they made Gabe a loser instead of some evil guy that can manipulate people.” And I realized that yes Gabe does impact Percy’s life by being abusive but show Gabe clearly also abuses Sally but in a controlling way like he controls what she does, goes too, etc. and I also like how they made him so dumb although that obviously doesn’t excuse his actions
The thing about the minotaur fight that bothers me the most is the fact that it's so downplayed. In the book like Red pointed out its raining hard, the car just got hit by a lightning bolt and thrown end over end into the treeline, Percy is pretty beat up, just watched his mom die, and was forced to stab the minotaur with its own horn because he loses the sword. The fact that he killed the minotaur and survived is treated as a big deal too, since its one of the biggest baddest monsters out there and has killed plenty of other demigods older than Percy was and had actual combat training. He even keeps the horn in cabin 3 throughout the series. And in the movie it feels like a mediocre first boss in a video game, it's the rock troll from Kingdoms of Amular
@@notmyfantasypodcast also another thing is that the "a lot of demigods go unclaimed and so just stay stuck in the Hermes cabin" thing ends up being an important plot point in the books, a lot of demigods join Luke and Chronos because they feel their Olympian parent just straight up abandoned them and doesn't care. It also fits in with the half blood children of minor gods because a lot of the minor gods feel like they're not getting the respect they deserve and their children are also mad about that and mad that everyone looks down on them because their parent isn't one of the twelve Olympians and thus just get shoved in the Hermes cabin for the rest of their lives and treated like a joke.
As a sarcastic pansexual I see this video as an absolute win, and Red from OSP is freaking hilarious so that just made this more funny Edit: shin Megami tenses avoids all pantheons having issues by saying one god at a time takes the creators seat until somebody else dethrones them and they’re reduced to only a corporeal god and not a physical and spiritual one
The one singular good thing about these movies is that it gave us one funny scene with Mr. D pouring a glass of alcohol and watching it turn to water. “You know the Christians have a guy who can do this trick in reverse.” -sips glass- “Now there’s a god!” … that’s it. That’s the only fun thing I remember.
He's 19 in the first book. By the end of the arc, he's about 23. This means a lot of the original wave of book fans (including myself) who were Percy's age or younger are now older than Luke at the end of the arc. Like... man. He went through a lot, too. They all did.
That's the fascinating thing! They all went through so so much. And Percy (and the reader) is kind of agreeing with Luke on the whole "gods are right bastards who need to have checks in place so their kids have even a chance at survival" Percy AGREES with Luke ...just not on the methods. In the end, Percy declines godhood in order to get the gods to pay their child support. Acknowledge your kids, get some more cabins in there for the minor gods, and don't let this happen again.
Luke is a great antagonist for that reason. Even if you don't agree with his actions, you get why he did it. Borderline "Good for her". Except when he betrays Percy made me (Cullen) so mad.
Not sure if you've read the rest of the first series (I think you mentioned on the pod that you did?), but the last book really made me cry for Luke. Really reminds you that a majority of Greek heros ended in tragedy.
This is just a random thought that occurred to me a little while ago, but it’s kind of weird that Medusa is usually depicted as just a pretty lady with snake hair when Medusa’s whole deal is that she turns people to stone specifically because she’s really ugly
I remember sitting down to watch this movie, and I tapped out SO quickly. I can't say what was my least favorite change because I straight up just didn't watch it. However, my mother insisted I watch the second movie because "how do you know if it's not good if you don't finish it??" and. yeah no they really did just. have Kronos be a giant rock monster that ate Luke, then got stabbed real bad and died. Having gotten into the series just before Battle of the Labyrinth came out and the twist regarding Luke and Kronos there, I cannot overstate my disappointment. But besides that, at the time of writing this, the last episode of the televised adaptation is about to drop! Broadly speaking I'm very happy with it, and I would love to hear y'all go over it and voice your thoughts.
Haha they are connected for sure, though PJO makes a lot more sense. We will have to discuss Descendants at some point because Descendants world-building is so insane and I could talk for HOURS about it.

... You do remember that the gods _are_ actually quite large when they're amongst themselves. Not laundries giant, but they're described as... 12 feet tall I think? But yeah, they mostly dress modern unless they're fighting on their own scale. We do see when they're fighting Typhon that they use chariots and wear the classical clothes. Also, Luke's age. At the end of the last book, he's 24, which puts him at around 18 or 19 in the first book. Or... Hmm... Percy is 12 in the first book, and turns 16 at the end. So that would mean Luke was more like 19-20.
Ah yes, I do think the book described them as tall, as an effect it always appears bad on screen to me but like that's a matter of personal preference.
I kind if have a love-hate relationship with this movie. Because it was my first exposure to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a series i became quite fond of, and when u go back and see this movie i get why fans hate it. But to me it was my entry point. It sucks as an adaptation, true, but i just can't bring myself to hate it.
This movie was the first time I truly remember being viscerally upset at an adaptation. Eragon I was 10 and mostly confused. Also the guy they cast as Brom I really liked and while they made some weird choices like showing galbatorix despite us not having seen him yet two books later at the time I didn't think it was absolutely terrible. This one I was 14 and was upset from the first announcement. I was just learning how to criticize movies more than bad and good, but was perpetually optimistic. But the first posters and trailers had a percy who was older than I was! Like clearly and obviously! Then they had a whole tech tent that Luke ran at camp and I just got so upset at like every decision they made. By the end I was just like, that's it... they ruined any hope of this series I love ever being on a screen again. Fortunately I was wrong and while the show has made some... odd decisions, the fundamental bones of the series with the characters I love is still there. And I van only hope Disney will keep it up and we might have a prayer of getting to see all the intertwining worlds of the Riordan mythos.
It's always crushing as a young book fan when an adaptation destroys a beautiful world and characters and I'm glad Percy Jackson got the second chance it deserves with the Disney+ adaptation!
12:20 If you read the Percy Jackson Greek Myths and Greek Heroes books, Riordan gets closer to the nonconsensual stuff between the gods, but I would argue its still in the most family friendly way possible, which is great for kids! If the kids afterwards want to go read the "original" mythology, then they can
The movie is VERY loosely based on the book of the same name. It comes across as less of an adaption and more like an original movie with Percy Jackson characters. It's not an awful movie but it's also no that great either.
No, no, it's an awful movie as well. Even ignoring the Percy Jackson-ness of the story (the writers tried to), it's a mess. The pacing is weird, the characters are weird, and the jokes aren't funny. It's just not great.
I just hope that Disney won't mess up/tone down the Magnus Chase series if they ever decide to adapt that corner of the franchise. It's my personal favorite of the whole bunch and when you consider its contents it would work best as a PG-13 or TV-14 adaptation, ideally with 2D animation to make it look pretty and a soundtrack full of Amon Amarth songs to help with the epic feel!
@@notmyfantasypodcast Thank you! I feel that we need more of it these days and given how the Percy Jackson series on Disney+ looks it would be for the best to have it be animated. #1 Satyrs originally weren’t goat people, that’s Fawn. Satyrs have horse features but not like centaurs. Second, I had to take a moment when Medusa was telling the story of her creation and turned “raped by the sea god” Into “ fell in love with a man who showed there was more to the world than the goddess I’m a priestess of”.
We talk about Fauns and Satyr history in our Chronicles of Narnia episode! Yeah they really lightened Medusa's story but I've heard the series explores it differently.
A fawn is a female deer you mean a faun. Fauns are Roman spirits that were conflated with the Satyrs and before that didn't have animal features. You are right however that Satyrs were originally part horse rather than part goat (which was more of a Renaissance thing). As for Medusa, that's more of an Ovid thing than original myth thing. Prior to that rather than "beautiful woman turned to hideous monster" it was just "hideous monster".
I know this is a video game but do you want to do Hades so you can feel better about adaptations of Greek mythology? I also wonder about some of the changes in the new TV show because there are obvious changes but I'm sure Riordan was behind or at least in agreement with said changes.
I've heard great things about Hades. We discussed video games in the past (Monster Prom & Diablo IV) but maybe we need to check out Hades when we revisit Classical Mythology.
Absolutely recommend Hades, it's one of the only Roguelites I can play for hours on end. The characters, the visuals, the MYTHOS. 35/10, would recommend
I always figured the end of the Sea of Monsters movie was more or less just the writers figuring out that there was never gonna be a third movie, so they decided to wrap it up. Probably for the best honestly, at least this means the odds of someone trying to resurrect the movie continuity with a Titan's Curse addition in is pretty low.
I liked the first Percy Jackson movie it was pretty good it wasn't a good faithful adaptation it was probably terrible lore adaptation wise but as a standalone movie it was pretty good.
Sally didn’t choose the right class, and you can’t just switch your glass partway through the game, what do you think this is D&D; yes, I know there’s a dragon and technically a dungeon, but my point still stands.
59:14 in defense of action girlie with their hair down,, I'd say it depends on the frequency/if it was planned for if it is immersion breaking,, like, if they're specifically planning to go have a game of capture the flag and it's not smth they do daily, then yeah, sus not to have the hair put up,, but if it's a surprise, or if you had capture the flag everyday like it was gym class,, then im chill with hair down, bc it'd be a pain to put my hair up everyday if I was doing that, I'd just leave it down--caveats would be if the character willingly puts their hair up on normal days(aka, if the default 350 days of the year isn't down, then they should put it up bc they clearly dont mind it that much if theyll do it other days without a specific reason) and if they have thick or I'd presume more curly or volumous hair,,, I have sorta mid thin straight hair, and it's pretty long,, so unless I'm whipping my head around, it stays where it is decently enough,,, I'd put my hair up if I'm doing dance with a bunch of jumping or turns, but if it was less up and down and spinning, I'd leave it down to dance,,,,, basically, I'd mark on a scale of 1, how common is the event/was it planned? 2, how calm is your hair baseline? 3, does the event actually disrupt your hair(or your hair disrupt the event) that much? When judging if it fits
One of the changes I absolutely despise the most about the first film (never saw the second) is how the underworld and Hades are portrayed. In the books the underworld is just a REALLY big cave off of memory, and it splits off into three areas depending on where the dead people would get assigned to. An endless wheat field for the average person, a small paradise for the few people who really earned the greek gods' favor, and the torture area for the people that really pissed off the gods. And Hades in the books is one of the nicer gods that just does NOT want to get involved in all the other gods' nonsense because being the ruler of the underworld is not exactly a glamorous or good job. In the 5th book when all the fighting is done and the gods are celebrating on olympus it's even pointed out that he looks uncomfortable because he's not used to being treated like hero by his family, because most other gods suck that much. For all his faults Hades is one of the most sympathetic gods in the Riordan universe Then the movie throws out all the nuances of the underworld and turns it into generic christian hell #8451, fire and brimstone and all. It's almost like the entire place was turned into the segment of the underworld meant to punish the people the gods hate and cranked it to 100. And Hades in the film is a colossal ass that turns into a pillar of fire just to scare the main trio, when that just wasn't necessary at all in the books because Hades was not the type of character to do that.
Red: *mentions overarching prophecy* Me: a half-blood of the eldest dogs shall reach sixteen against all odds to see the world in endless sleep the hero's soul cursed blade shall reap a single choice shall end his days Olympus to preserve or raze ... oh gods it's still memorized
I hate the movie version of the lotus hotel so much and maybe this particular thing is me being petty but. The lotus hotel is one of my favorite instances of book Percy being legitimately clever! he feels like something's a bit off with the lotus hotel, starts talking to other people, and they're not super forthcoming about their lives, but he realizes they keep referencing outdated technology and stuff like it's new even though they say theyve only been there a few weeks so he eventually, with mounting dread, starts asking people what year they think it is. He then realizes time is moving too fast and gets the hell out of there with Grover and Anabeth. he doesn't need Poseidon to tell him any of this he just figures it out
The worst thing absolut the Capture the Flag game is tha in the Book it is Anabeths explizite plann that Clarisa will go of to bully Percy and so she will be distractet and Anabeth can winn the game without the ennemys best figther standing in her way.
34:49 tbf, the entire books conflict evolves around how the gods really AREN’T the same between pantheons. That was a huge reason why the Greek and Roman sides were kept separate. And historically it was a bad idea too.
It is fascinating how the Greeks and Romans took similar God concepts in different directions based on cultural values. The Gods already varied greatly between Greek City States.
percy sitting at the bottom of the pool also doesn't make sense because he's not supposed to know he can breathe underwater yet and there's no reason he'd be able to hold his breath longer.
i ignored the full title and was half watching the first few minutes of this video, so my eyes bugged a little when Red's voice starting coming out of one of your mouths 💀
Movie Luke:Wants them and the Bolt to be trapped. Also Luke tells them exactly how to escape, when he could have LED them to 3 rocks with no magic whatsoever. "Not a great plan."
@@notmyfantasypodcast There's enough people claiming the movies are actually good, and we need as many people as possible to hold the line, thank you for your Service.
Unfortunately the internet is primed to see romance between any characters that have an argument (provided those characters are of the opposite genders)
And also we're obsessed with spotting tropes!
They do have an enemies to frenemies arc of sorts in the books, but it stretches over almost the whole series.
Why did they just always make the worst choice possible?
I'm so glad they took their time to make that change. It was such a small detail that they could just be called Sally Jackson, like who cares, but no, they literally stated her name was Ugliano just because it goes against the book and they were on a roll with that.
Yeah, like they didn't realize women could keep their own name
To quote Tv Series’ Mr. D: “Why must you ruin everything?”
Percy is so petty and I love that because those gods deserve his sass.
I believe that’s Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods
Specifically, he starts in the order in which the Olympians were born, and Zeus was last because he was the youngest.
It always throws me for a loop when I see the actual people behind animated voices. Hearing Red's voice come out of a non-animated face is throwing me in such a fun way.
Honestly same
Red wearing sleeves is what surprised me!
Red has sleeves?! No tank top?? Is she okay??
21:51 Okay but both stories of Hephestus being thrown off Olympus being in the Illiad makes me wonder if, instead of no canon, ALL of them are true and Hephestus has been yeeted off a mountain multiple times. (I know that's not the case, but it made me laugh).
That poor guy. Zeus and Hera make the worst parents
*Hephaestus climbs back up the mountain
Zeus “I SAID NO YOU DUMB BABY”

That makes me think of Hephaestus as Jazz from Fresh Prince, getting thrown out of the house over and over 😂
You know what would be a fitting yet HYSTERICAL depiction for Athena in a modern setting? She's got the toga, the sandals, and all that. But on TOP of it, she's COMPLETELY kitted out in tacti-cool milspec gear like a flak vest and all that. She's still got the Aegis, but she's also strapped with an M16 and a Colt 1911.
I just love the idea that she might maintain some fashion sense from her ancient ideals, but also recognizes the advances in military tactics and DOES keep up with them.
I would love to see that kinda look on her
Tbf, they do acknowledge in Heroes of Olympus that guns exist for demigods.

Yeah his random man cave makes no sense
@@notmyfantasypodcast I think the implication is that since Hermes is a thief Luke shoplifted all those monitors. It’s dumb, and MW2’s popularity was at its peak so it was a shameless “look at how cool and relatable Luke is” to the teen audience they were shooting for

When Percy first met Hades, it was also the very first time that he felt the actual presence and power of a god. That was even after he met Ares and Dionysus. The sheer aura that Percy felt from Hades was so much more powerful than the other two gods, that he was briefly overwhelmed by it, and that's without the influence of the Helm of Darkness because...well it was also stolen
Hades actually got VERY insulted when he was accused of stealing the Master Bolt, and wanted to start a new war to expand his kingdom. In fact, he started complaining that he had TOO many subjects, and too little room. He also stated that he wasn't as rich as everyone thinks he is anymore because he kept having to start projects in expanding the Underworld for all the souls to live in. It's akin to having too many workers, and a good number of them are asking for a raise
It's actually stated that Charon DOES indeed take other forms of money, he doesn't exclusively take drachma coins
I do really like how Riordan characterizes Hades
Percy: trying to confront hades
Hades: complaining about paperwork and taxes
Riordan’s Hades- subtle message warning about misjudging others, overpopulation & slight business management.
Everyone else- EL DIABLO
Percy: "Also Charon wants a pay raise"
Hades: "Don't even talk to me about Charon! That man has been IMPOSSIBLE since he discovered Italian suits"
🤣
The fare is usually added onto their last electric bill. Or... phone bill? I can't remember which. I think that's what they said, anyway.
one of my favorite little details in the Riordanverse is this; in Lightning Thief, they're in Lotus Hotel and Casino. in Kane Chronicles (the ones with the egyptian gods) Khonsu casually mentions how he owns a casino in Vegas. Khonsu, god of the moon- but also time and gambling.
the exact casino he owns is never named, but considering this one is called _Lotus_ I think we can all guess
(extra fun fact; there used to be a Lotus Casino in Vegas - but it shut down decades ago)
I love easter eggs like that.
Damn I need to reread Kane Chronicles that was some good reading lol
I can't unsee that Annabeth in this movie was written like Clarisse. Now that I've seen it, it's there.
Yeah, such a lazy writing choice that deprived us of a really great character
when I watched it I genuinely thought she *was* Clarisse and was wondering when Annabeth was going to show up
@@whiteraven562 yeah i fully was very confused for the first interactions between them because of Anabeth just having the role of Clarisse and not doing anything that would fit her character in the books
They only knew one archetype of female character for young women
I do love worlds where Pantheons collide! Like the Scion TTRPG.
In fact in the short stories where the Egyptian and Greek characters meet it’s a plot point that Greek and Egyptian powers and magic l are volatile when mixed.
I love that as a narrative choice.

I suppose this is my least favorite change since it’s the one the springs to my mind the most often. It may seem minor to some though.
Riptide, Percy’s sword is disguised as a ballpoint pen *with a cap* in the books nearly every time Percy draws his sword it states “I uncapped Riptide.”
In the movies it’s a goddamn safety hazard!
Yeah the movie misses a lot of those charming and well-crafted details that the book has!

The musical is surprisingly pretty good. I don't know what possessed me to go see it, but it was much better than the movie.
Yeah the musical is really fun!
Is THAT what's going on with Zoomers' sex-negativity?
I never read Percy Jackson but I adore Magnus Chase. Yeah someone truly bungled the bag with this franchise.
That's super fascinating. I think the films could have had mass appeal if they used the strong story telling that Riordan utilized.
I've heard a variety of different versions of those stories all combined in different narratives!
@@notmyfantasypodcast Well as you stated many times 'canon' isn't a thing 😅 but that was my vague understanding of the horses thing.
One more thing, In the "original" version of the myth, Poseidon isn't really involved in medusas story at all. She was just born a gorgon, hence gorgon sisters.

Now that the show is coming out (and it's incredible so far, waiting for episodes 7 and 8) I'm down for a good ole' trashing of the movies. The odd thing is that some relatively small but very vocal groups of people have been popping into existance as vehement defenders of the movies. Mostly because they think the show is worse since it "changes things therefore unfaithful adaptation therefore trash."
What these people have unfortunately failed to grasp is that the show's changes actually serve to improve the story and bring to the forefront character arcs, story threads and themes that Rick Riordan only really explored in the last couple entries in the book series, thus giving them more time to develop, deepen and expand in the TV show for future seasons (fingers crossed we actually get them).
Writing will always evolve, even when written by the same person. We always want to refine our own stories
When they're going over the gods and monsters in the first part, I already know exactly what Red's bound to point out cuz I've watched all her videos about this stuff many many times.😄
Also I also stopped reading two books into when they got into the Roman gods stuff. I was getting a bit old for it and it just started getting a little convoluted.
Red truly is an expert and Cullen was so scared to say something dumb.
In my mind, the reason that the Percy Jackson movies failed is because, instead of adapting the source material for a new audience of middle schoolers, they adapted the source material to appeal for an older audience (high schoolers).
They chased the ever elusive cool factor which almost always leads to boring movies.
I was trying to figure out why none of this was ringing a bell to me when I remembered that I haven't actually seen the movie. I went with my girlfriend at the time and she walked out about 30 min in.
She had the right idea
The thing about Scooby-Doo (and its movjes) is that it's SUPPOSED to be ridiculous
Those movies are so camp!
That is a very key distinction that was missed.
My least favorite choice was the decision to release it
I'm Screaming. Hilarious

Yeah like so many things in the movie it just happens and holds no emotional weight.

And Percy (and the reader) is kind of agreeing with Luke on the whole "gods are right bastards who need to have checks in place so their kids have even a chance at survival"
Percy AGREES with Luke ...just not on the methods.
I haven't read all the books yet but I feel like I should!
This is just a random thought that occurred to me a little while ago, but it’s kind of weird that Medusa is usually depicted as just a pretty lady with snake hair when Medusa’s whole deal is that she turns people to stone specifically because she’s really ugly
Never underestimate the detrimental power of a bad haircut.
Part 1 of our thoughts is out now! The TV show captures the characters and world so much better than the movie.
As a PJO fan and a Descendants fan, I feel attacked by the comparison 😂
Haha they are connected for sure, though PJO makes a lot more sense. We will have to discuss Descendants at some point because Descendants world-building is so insane and I could talk for HOURS about it.

Im not quite shure if i rember this correctly, but- when thay encountered Medusa she felt like she was in on how hard it was to be a half blood. She was telling percy that what liyes in front of him is going to be hard and how she could make all the pain go away. Thats some charter depth i missed.
Yes that was part of her hypnotizing aura

I don't remember the entire second half of this movie, I think that's because I watched it on TV, got bored, and stopped watching after the casino scene.
Yeah the casino thing is the last remotely interesting thing to happen so good choice.
I have good news and bad news.
The good news is, Twitter has more or less survived to the video's release.
The bad news is, Twitter has more or less survived to the video's release.
It lives but at what cost

this is just reminding me how good the books are,
like that scene with them in the car with the minotaur chasing them? that was absolutely visceral. The DREAD
That was a really intense scene to read!
I love hearing different views on this movie and the books how they relate (very little)
The book is so FUN and this movie is not...
Hate to break it to you Red, but by the Last PJO book Percy is only 15 or 16
oh lord they're babies ;-; -R
In Last Olympian he turns 16, is 16 all through the Heroes of Olympus series (that's a very eventful summer for the Seven), turns 17 shortly after Blood of Olympus and is 17 for Chalice of the gods, the Trials of Apollo series (that he cameos in) and his cameo in Magnus Chase.
@@VictoriaStarrattby the end of trials of Apollo I believe he is 18 because by that point he’s finished school and is heading to new Rome with annabeth and Grover
@@zap4th368 wait, thinking about it, I think you might be right
That's super valid! It was an entry point to something you love so how could you hate it?
"Women can only have daughters and men can only have boys"
Well my mum was a woman and my dad was a man so I'm kinda like a mix between the two
Wow 🤯
When the movie first came out someone referred to movie!Annabeth as "Clarisseabeth" and I had never read anything more accurate in my entire life.
If the kids afterwards want to go read the "original" mythology, then they can
Imagine Lizzo as Aphrodite and Peter Dinklage as Hephaestus and Gwendoline Christie as Athena.
Love that!
@@notmyfantasypodcast Thanks.
The movie is VERY loosely based on the book of the same name. It comes across as less of an adaption and more like an original movie with Percy Jackson characters.
It's not an awful movie but it's also no that great either.
The sequel, though...
Yeah, I think the frustrating thing is they had the budget and resources but didn't pursue greatness!
No, no, it's an awful movie as well. Even ignoring the Percy Jackson-ness of the story (the writers tried to), it's a mess. The pacing is weird, the characters are weird, and the jokes aren't funny. It's just not great.
Rick Riordan presents isn't connected to the larger Percy Jackson universe
Oh okay! That's cool. I love anything that shares mythology with people in new ways!
Except maybe kind of "The Gifted Clans" trilogy
The best part of the movie adaptations is just Rick Riordan himself saying he was begging for these movies to not be made.
I love that you have the vision! And I love 2d animation!
@@notmyfantasypodcast Thank you! I feel that we need more of it these days and given how the Percy Jackson series on Disney+ looks it would be for the best to have it be animated. Not to mention that the Magnus Chase series has more of an edge to it than Percy Jackson and the adaptors should try to highlight that as much as possible instead of toning things down. Yeah, so he could get it on with Persephone....
You know I didn't think this movie was overtly horny, but the second I saw the thumbnail my brain clicked and I though yeah it kind of was.
Truly! Horny in an unexpected way
Yes do a review for the show when all the episodes are out!
I was not expecting a Bionicle refference in this vid, love it
I want to see a media analysis of the Mask of Light now...
Haha we do have a Mask of Light episode planned for this year! Cullen was obsessed with Bionacles as a kid so we have to talk about the lore at some point.
@@notmyfantasypodcast There's so much interesting to talk about with regards to the fan community as well--as weird as it sounds, I met some of my current gaming friends via the Bionicle fandom.
It was ultimately a corporate product, but it was a touchstone for a lot of people. And with the availability of 3D printing and modeling, we're seeing a folk resurgence. Also, I hope you've read "The Bionicle to Trans Pipeline," article--it's an essential look at how fandoms can claim characters for their own, regardless (or in spite of) original intentions.
I have read that article! Bionicle was a toy but I do feel like the lore had a lot of love put into it and it really stuck with people. I love that interest is renewing because there is so much potential with that world and those characters.
Wait till you find out the first draft was even WORSE. Y'all are right, the writers were just horny.
Iirc many of the changes were Ricks idea, he wanted to use the show to fix some stuff he didn't like.
As a writer, I relate. There are always tweaks you want to make to your previous work.
Absolutely recommend Hades, it's one of the only Roguelites I can play for hours on end. The characters, the visuals, the MYTHOS. 35/10, would recommend
1:20:37 Oh, to be a fly on the wall at that particular story meeting...
Truly I need to know what they were thinking
I always figured the end of the Sea of Monsters movie was more or less just the writers figuring out that there was never gonna be a third movie, so they decided to wrap it up. Probably for the best honestly, at least this means the odds of someone trying to resurrect the movie continuity with a Titan's Curse addition in is pretty low.
They probably saw the writing on the wall for the franchise.
26:23 somehow I had both of these origins for her coexisting in my mind without ever realizing the contradiction
Maybe i was just too young when i read Heroes of Olympus, but i was surprised that it wasn't everyone's favourite part of the franchise.
Never watched the second movie don't care too but from what I have seen is Nathan Fillion is in it that's probably the best part of the movie
I liked the first Percy Jackson movie it was pretty good it wasn't a good faithful adaptation it was probably terrible lore adaptation wise but as a standalone movie it was pretty good.
Sally didn’t choose the right class, and you can’t just switch your glass partway through the game, what do you think this is D&D; yes, I know there’s a dragon and technically a dungeon, but my point still stands.
what I also dislike that wasn't mentioned is that in the movie the lightning bolt is basically a divine taser while in the book it's basically a nuke.
Yeah movie bolt is only an uncommon DND item when it should be a Wondrous Item
Hit play because I saw OSP in the title, didn't hit pause because the only movie adaptation I hate more is How To Train Your Dragon.
Haha glad you didn't hit Pause!
59:14 in defense of action girlie with their hair down,, I'd say it depends on the frequency/if it was planned for if it is immersion breaking,, like, if they're specifically planning to go have a game of capture the flag and it's not smth they do daily, then yeah, sus not to have the hair put up,, but if it's a surprise, or if you had capture the flag everyday like it was gym class,, then im chill with hair down, bc it'd be a pain to put my hair up everyday if I was doing that, I'd just leave it down--caveats would be if the character willingly puts their hair up on normal days(aka, if the default 350 days of the year isn't down, then they should put it up bc they clearly dont mind it that much if theyll do it other days without a specific reason) and if they have thick or I'd presume more curly or volumous hair,,, I have sorta mid thin straight hair, and it's pretty long,, so unless I'm whipping my head around, it stays where it is decently enough,,, I'd put my hair up if I'm doing dance with a bunch of jumping or turns, but if it was less up and down and spinning, I'd leave it down to dance,,,,,
basically, I'd mark on a scale of
1, how common is the event/was it planned?
2, how calm is your hair baseline?
3, does the event actually disrupt your hair(or your hair disrupt the event) that much? When judging if it fits
I love the math/realism you bring to this. A very accurate assessment
For all his faults Hades is one of the most sympathetic gods in the Riordan universe
Then the movie throws out all the nuances of the underworld and turns it into generic christian hell #8451, fire and brimstone and all.
It's just adaptational laziness at it's peak
Red: *mentions overarching prophecy*
Me:
a half-blood of the eldest dogs
shall reach sixteen against all odds
to see the world in endless sleep
the hero's soul cursed blade shall reap

Hearing a few of the critiques makes me REALLY want to hear yall takes on the show
Our Part 1 of the Show is currently out with Part 2 on the way!
He then realizes time is moving too fast and gets the hell out of there with Grover and Anabeth. he doesn't need Poseidon to tell him any of this he just figures it out
It is a shame because it is a really fun modernizing of a myth and I really liked it in the book!
The worst thing absolut the Capture the Flag game is tha in the Book it is Anabeths explizite plann that Clarisa will go of to bully Percy and so she will be distractet and Anabeth can winn the game without the ennemys best figther standing in her way.
Yeah they really dropped the Annabeth is smart and strategic angle in this adaptation.
1:50:13 but counter point
Would luke be the cartoonishly evil villain to murder innocent people
Hell no!
Yeah the movie lacks the nuance of the book.
You guys have Red Dead Redemption on the show.
percy sitting at the bottom of the pool also doesn't make sense because he's not supposed to know he can breathe underwater yet and there's no reason he'd be able to hold his breath longer.
Yeah, it's kind of a useless skill in the narrative of the film, so just a poor choice
9:42 they somehow did a sequel, somehow. without setting it up at all in the first movie.
