Encanto Movie Description:
The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift -- every child except Mirabel. A good movie you should see is The legend of Bagger Vance. It's not a disney movie, but it has matt Damon, will Smith jack lemon. You'll love the cinematography and the music.

I think she didn't have a door because she was set to be Abuelas successor as protector of the Encanto. After all, she was getting older, so the miracle was probably thinking ahead to who will protect it when Abeula passes.

I did. It was very fucking hard but I told my mom the way some of her words and actions hurt us, even if she didn't mean to. She called my dumb, a liar, said she never wanted to hear from me again.
But two days later, she finally told me she was proud of me. I'm 19, and it's the first time in my life I ever remember her saying that to me. No buts, no criticism, no negativity- just a simple, 'im proud of you.'
it meant so much and is probably why I'm so obsessed with this movie. it's not just about family to me, i saw a lot of Mirabels growth- her assurance in herself and confidence in myself.

I love that kids who grew up being labeled as “gifted” can relate to this movie, but also us poor saps with learning disabilities or are just average can also relate to it. Everyone has pressure. Everyone has expectations. “I will never be enough for you. Will I? No matter how hard I try. No matter how hard any of us tries. Luisa will never be strong enough. Isabella will never be perfect enough.” I feel this so hard and I’m pretty sure everyone does.

Told how I am supposed to fit in how I'm supposed to act and think around others. I siblings thought I had it easy until they saw the pressure I faced all the time
Bruno left because everyone only saw the negative in his visions, and he knew that even if he told the family that the future was undecided, they would still have turned that negativity onto Mirabel (“I knew how it was gonna look, I knew what everyone would think because I’m *Bruno* and everyone always assumes the worst.”). We already see how the family treated her just because she doesn’t have a gift, so imagine if they knew about Bruno’s vision when she was *five,* that negativity & neglect would’ve been *doubled* growing up.
In short: Bruno left because he loved his little niece so much that he was willing to sacrifice his place in the family to protect her from further abuse caused (indirectly) by *his* vision. 😭💔
Which is why it hurt to hear abuela Alma say that Bruno didn't care about the family. He loved them so deeply, poor guy. Mirabel came so close to being the next Bruno, blamed for things she can't control and ostracized/villainized for it until she'd have to leave.
@hasslfoot agreed - you can tell when mirabel's gift didnt manifest that alma was worried that the magic was dissipating and that pedro's blessing had finally "run out". then bruno - ostracized by the same vanishing magic that saved and supports everyone in town and gives alma a literal purpose to life - sees a bad vision and "abandons" everyone to fate without warning them how to fix it.
the way that people talk about bruno without talking about how or why he left (like the 20-25 year old wedding story) makes it seem like they cant understand why he left, except that he must've done it out of a negative emotion from their experience with his gift, and it colors their perception of him. alma saying he didn't care, and being so shocked when he shows up, and everyone else getting defensive about him being mentioned - they mustve been hurting from his perceived betrayal for the entire last decade.
and mirabel acting out as the magic goes wonky? well, if bruno could hurt them like this after being an outcast for most of his life, mirabel must be capable of it too. you can tell they have the 'it was going to happen eventually' mentality of predetermination with her.
@@geo-em I thought I could find reasoning as to why the family treated her as an outcast without actually meaning to hurt her... But when I saw them take that La Familia Madrigal photo without Mirabel simply becuz she wasn't 'gifted' I was done making excuses for them. Abuela was too obsessed with making everything 'perfect' she didn't see she was causing a great divide and that's why the miracle was fading, becuz it was granted through togetherness, love and sacrifice. It doesn't matter what they thought, segregation is never okay. Also Dolores knew Bruno was in the walls, I wonder why she never told anyone.

The reason Abuelo took his family (and the other villagers) out of the town was because he hoped for a better future for the children. The butterfly candle represented that hope. Abuela had her hope destroyed when she saw her husband die, and the only thing that kept her going was Abuelo's hope. But she had very little of her own, so the only thing she could do was protect the candle. She didn't cultivate the hope in her children, or in her grandchildren. Gradually, Abuelo's hope wasn't enough (depression has a tendency to win in the long run). When she had so little hope for Mirabel's gift that she forced Bruno to see the future and he didn't see something clearly and obviously good, she gave up (as the song says "your fate is sealed when the prophecy is read", and a sealed fate is the antithesis of hope).
Mirabel never gave up hope. She never had a gift and so Abuela never forced her to believe the gift was the only thing of worth. Even when she decided to stop 'waiting for a miracle', she had the will (and what is will but hope manifested?) to succeed at saving her family. It wasn't until Abuela destroyed that hope as well that the final magic of the encanto was broken, and the house collapsed. But when everyone else in the family had lost their magic (the only thing of value they knew), and all their hope was gone, Mirabel still had hers. And she ignited her family's hope once again, all of them, even Abuela. And when they built the new house, all of them together, and their village as well, it was the power of Mirabel's hope that recreated the encanto of the familia Madrigal, and brought their magic back. Mirabel doesn't have a gift. She is the gift.
I like how the person without a gift cares so much about the gift because of her love for the family. She knows how it feel to stand on the side while other people shine and she's willing to do it and doesn't want her family to experience that

The miracle is you
Interesting analysis, I can see you put a lot of thought into it. However, I have to disagree. Here's my take on it. Of course this just my opinion so feel free to disagree.
Mirabel has the same gift as Abuela, she's the keeper of the miracle, the glue that keeps the family together (this has been confirmed by the creators of the movie). I also heard the creators said Abuela subconsciously chooses the the powers for the children when they get their gifts, which means she had so much hope for Mirabel she chose her out of all of the children to take over the role of matriarch for the family when she passes away. The problem is she doesn't know how it works, so she was scared they were doing something wrong. Mirabel was a constant reminder, in her own mind, of her failure to keep the Miracle going. That's the whole thing about Abuela, she thinks they have to use their Gifts to earn the right to keep the Miracle, everything stems from that. Also her fear reliving the tragic past and being displaced again. She's not being mean to hurt Mirabel, she's scared. Not an excuse for the abuse she brought on the family, just an explanation. I bet if you made a supercut of the movie with only the parts where Mirabel and Abuela interact, Mirabel would look guilty as heck. Obviously we know better.
The house cracking is a physical representation of the cracks in the family. Every conflict that caused damage to the family's relationships causes damage to the house, as seen when Mirabel's parents argue with Abuela. It goes the other way too, that's why when Mirabel and Isabela made up, it healed the cracks in the house. But the main conflict was between Abuela and Mirabel. The final straw came from Mirabel, not from Abuela. She said words that you can't take back, it created a rift between them that could not be healed and that's why the house broke completely. She was telling the truth, but that doesn't mean it hurts less.
What the movie was trying to say, in my opinion, is that there's more than one side to a story. In order for them to repair their relationship, not only did Abuela need to understand Mirabel, but Mirabel also needed to understand Abuela. Obviously the majority of the "blame" if you want to call it that lies with Abuela, but watch the movie and you'll see that Mirabel doesn't always behave the best either, in particular towards Isabela. She literally says to Mariano that Isabela is a primadonna for instance.
But yes, Mirabel doesn't need a gift, she is the gift. That's the main theme of this movie. :P
@@Crazymadpsycho33 I think the house did crack because she cut her hand right before and that tile wasn't there either. The house just managed to fix itself before everyone else could see. What epiphany is that? Always interested to hear thoughts about Encanto.
So, I compete in Strongman, and I’m a HUGE fan of the message of normalizing physically strong women. There’s such a stigma and I’m glad it was addressed in a small way
the animators had to FIGHT Disney to get Luisa to be buff like that. Ridiculous.
I blame the trope that strong women need a stronger man.

I also love that Luisa got to be very feminine! Early concept art of her has her in trousers, but it's nice to see a physically large, very strong woman who is still "girly". With how big she is it can be hard to remember that she's still a 19 year old girl, so I'm really glad the animators went in this direction with her.

A little piece of Colombian trivia:
-We often say "Miercoles" when something goes bad or we hurt ourselves, it literally translates to "Wednesday" but it also sounds very similar to the word "sh*t!" (m¡erda in Spanish), so ever since we are little is our way to curse without technically cursing.
-Colombians have a very distinctive mannerism whenever we want to point at something discreetly or we have our hands full: we point with our lips, so if a Colombian ever makes a kissy face in front of you, they might not be trying to actually kiss you 😁

She did hear him but she couldn't say anything because they don't talk about Bruno, and the one shutting down bruno talk the hardest was her own mother.
But she was hinting at it with the rats in the walls comment and all but flat-out saying it in the "We don't talk about Bruno" song. "I can hear him now." "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling."
"We Don't Talk About Bruno", "The Family Madrigal", and "Surface Pressure" are my favorite songs in the movie. "What Else Can I Do" gets an honorable mention.

We don't talk about Bruno is literally such a good song that it was trending at #1 for 3 weeks. That's insane for a musical bruh.
I literally didn't know this movie existed until I saw a top 50 list on Spotify and clicked #1 to hear the first few lines of We Dont Talk About Bruno. Went to watch the movie immediately after once I figured out it was something new that just came out. Watched it twice in the same day it was so good lol
Isabela was definitely my favorite in the show, when I heard you say that "your not perfect just because you grow flowers" but it's not that she sees herself as perfect, her family does, especially abuela. During the song of we don't talkabout bruno she had a positive prophecy and that made abuela have lots of good expectations for her and expected a lot, that's why she's only ever made flowers because they were "beautiful " and those were the things she's expected to make and she never knew she could make more , that's where the part "he told me that my powers would grow" from the song comes along.
Fact about the chemistry you mentioned: Most of the cast members met the first time at the premiere!
It is and was usual in voice acting to be almost alone in the studio with directors. Due the pandemic they've been directed via ZOOM!

Abuela caring more about the Family's reputation than the actual family itself hits close to home
Clearly Maribel already had a gift. Rap God. Her flow is insane
Notice that the candle "died" while Mirabel was holding it, maybe showing that she is the candle or "miracle" now, or that she always was which is why she didn't have an obvious gift or door, the house is her "door" and she'll be the next matriarch of the family after abuela. This is shown in the scene where the candle goes from being displayed in the window of abuela, to being in mirabels hands, where the light goes out, the power transferring to her.
Encanto is actually done by Disney Animation, which is a different studio from Disney Pixar!
I think the biggest difference is that Disney Animation movies are almost always musicals??
The big difference I learned was that Pixar movies make a point of not having an "I want" song

I don’t blame him for thinking this is a Pixar movie. The two companies are getting closer and closer in style. I think one thing that makes it seem more like a Pixar movie is that there wasn’t a clear “Villain” character.

I know I’m months late but i thought that most of the Pixar movies are original stories and not based on fairytales, legends, historical figures, etc like Disney. A lot of Disney animation films are musicals
The more I watch this move the more I associate with Bruno.
I feel like the black sheep of my family, always just struggling in comparison to the rest. But always more so when I'm around my niece. My cousin and her husband couldn't have their own child so they spent 3 years trying to adopt her. I finally met her at our family Thanksgiving dinner and she was so quiet and timid and scared of all of us. Seating was limited so I was seated next to her. During this time I was an excessive alcoholic--unbeknown to my extended family--lots of black outs and having to apologize for things I couldn't remember, and being seated next to this little innocent newcomer threw me off...
But while seated next to her I tried to make her feel more comfortable around us. I helped her feed herself, handling the silverware, trying to convince her to eat her vegetables, 'tricking' her to eating the sweet potatoes. Feeling like an outsider myself I guess I connected with her. Then out of nowhere, she hugged me...and I felt a crack.
Since then I've been her favorite and it has always felt unnatural because I just see myself as this flawed troll when I'm around her. I feel like I'm always my best self around her but I fear the day she notices the cracks...
Still I've worked on staying sober--almost two months now--and do my best to be the best person I think she sees. Which is kinda hard because she's at that stage where words fly out of her faster than she can properly pronounce.
I relate HEAVILY in my soul and being to this, with a 4 year old step sister myself being 21.,, I don't have much to say or comment, but thank you for this.. brought me to tears. I wish you the best with her and your own future road

Dos Oruguitas is definitely my favorite song, that's the one that made me break. I'm still grieving both parents and the older generation isn't close so this movie put some much needed magic back into my life. On a brighter note, I can't wait to see you on the dance floor 'cause you swear you be doing something & I'd be right there with you cutting up 🤣

Alma (Abuela) was the key to getting the magic back. She reminds me of people that have emotional detachment from her ptsd, which means people who suffer from ptsd often try & push aside what causes them grief or tries to avoid it. All these years she pushed aside the trauma she endured because it was too painful for her to face. Does it excuse how she acted when she got older? Absolutely not. But that’s where Mirabel came in. Mirabel has no gift but her purpose in the family was to get them to confront there fears & open themselves up to change. But the magic couldn’t be saved until the person who was breaking the home confronted her own trauma. The family couldn’t heal until Alma confronted & relived Pedro’s brutal murder. Mirabel then understood a lesson a lot of us have to learn.
In all cultures, so many of our elders never have that chance to heal from the things they’ve endured. In Italian culture, you’re expected to just man up or woman up to raise your family. A lot of Italians beat there kids because there parents beat them & no one likes to talk about feelings. Mirabel standing up to Alma made Alma realize that she messed up bad by pushing that grief on her family. It’s almost like the triplets became branches of Alma herself.
Pepa: has anxiety but doesn’t want to upset her family or put them in harms way
Bruno: much more gentle child who understands others & is kind
Julieta: the sympathetic motherly figure who probably comforted Pepa & Bruno where Alma didn’t, & is probably the aunt Camilo & Dolores bonded with.
Overall, Alma was the key to getting the magic back because she was the last one to face what was breaking her. The house couldn’t be healed until the one who was breaking it realized it. Encanto teaches us that family is stronger than the chains of generational trauma & curses. Together you can heal.
I think this is the first in a long time pixar/disney movie that made my feel strongly. I didnt sob but I could understand it very well. I am that person in my family. The feeling of not being good enough, being the weird one, my talents not being good enough or not helpful. So I really could see myself in this movie. The outcast who everyone disregards or sees as less.
My favorite line is when Mirabel says "nothing can be broken that we can't fix together" I was worried they were going try and excuse Abela of all the stuff she did to the family be like forgive and forget but no they said yes it's broken so let's fix it I feel like to many stories try to be like oh they feel bad let's just forget the trama they caused instead they didn't do that and I love it
I choose to interpret this movie as being about how toxic it can be to separate people based on their gifts (or lack thereof) and the expectations placed on people deemed "gifted."
Also "The Family Madrigal" and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" have been stuck in my head :P
I think one of the best things about this is just how many positive messages there actually are. Some of them are pretty clear (surface pressure comes to mind), others are more subtle (like what you mentioned) and you don't catch them at first. It's just so good all the way around.
Also if you watch supercarlinbrothers there is a perfectly logical reason for why each of the family members got their individual gift and it's protecting the family so they never have to run again so they'll always be safe and that is with each family member born for one Peppa can f****** the weather when she gets stressed which will make invasion harder Bruno can predict things which will let them see it coming stress her out to prevent an invasion and if anyone does get hurt julieta can fix them with a meal and then the kids Dolores can hear anything coming from miles away camilo can change into people to spy and give them false information Antonio can have the whole Forest backing them up in on the attacks and everything and as for Juliet's side of the family Isabella she can make the vines and thorns go all batshit crazy like protecting the house like the freaking Castle in sleeping beauty she can make it a force to thorns if she wants she can produce poisonous plants she can cause all kinds of mayhem for the Invaders and if any do get through Louisa can probably take down half a dozen guys by herself
I have a theory: La casita built on the family members' natural gifts. Tia Pita was probably fascinated with the weather, Julieta was likely a natural healer; Isabella had a natural green thumb, Luisa was a sturdy little girl, and Antonio had a natural empathy with animals. Mirabela was so naturally empathetic and sensitive that La casita saw no NEED to boost her abilities magically. In fact, her insights were so powerful, she was able to restore the magic to the house and her family members once the house was rebuilt.
I like the theory (not mine, but one of the most poular going around) That mirabelle is the next "Candleholder"
her Grandmother is the original holder of the Gift, The 'Candle'. Mirabelle was chosen to inherit that role, either because her Grandmother forgot to honor the Gift in the Way she should or simply because her Abuela was nearing the end of her life and the next generation needed to be established.
Mirabelle's "gift" is holding the family together. no one except Abuela has as strong a connection with Casita as Mirabelle. she is, for all intends and purposes the "Soul" of the House.
This would lead to the asumption that in about two generations, In the Line of Mirabelles Grandchildren, the next candleholder without a Gift would be born. I would also be super intersted to know what happens when Abuela one day passes. Will her room dissapear? Or will it stay, but be closed?
I love this movie, for it's message, its beauty, its great songs and the amazing worldbuilding in a small span of time!!!!

As a hispanic viewer, it's really great to see representation, especially for my own niece, who's about five. I really love this movie because I was sort of thinking initially that the movie was going to make Mirabel eventually get a gift that would be better than everyones at the end. Instead, she's like Abuela, she's a guardian for the Casita.
Dolores and Bruno are my favourites of this movie. Her high pitched squeak when she finds out about Mirabel being in the prophecy kills me. "I know..."
The children of Abuelo and Abuela represent time. Mirabel's mom is past(healing hurts and injuries), Tia Pepa is the present(creating rain and storms which help with harvests)and Bruno is the future(seeing visions).
"The reason the magic is going away and theres cracks in the house is because of YOU, you old bitch!" LMFAO! Fucking burst out laughing ,even though that is one of the most emotional scenes in the movie.
If you like, you can look up "the Shining Path", it was a communist guerilla group in Columbia that raided along the borders with plans to overthrow the government. That may be the basis of who attacked Abuela's village and forced her and Abuelo to flee(and eventually killed him).
Favourite songs are a tie between"We Don't Talk About Bruno"(love the shots of Bruno rocking out in the background during Dolores's part), "the Family Madrigal"and "Surface Pressure". All been on repeat on my youtube for the past few weeks.

I think you meant the FARC. The Shining Path was in Peru. Both were very similar in that, as you say, they used warped ideology to terrorise poor communities in the name of communist revolution. In both Colombia and Peru these terrorist groups caused many tragedies just like in abuela's village.
I love how she's like her Abuela - she's the conductor of the orchestra. The Abuela doesn't have a gift either except to keep the family together. The house starts to break apart when her abuela doesn't accept her entire family.
My favorite line from Luisa's song is "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under." I'm an only child so I can't relate the way an older sibling can but I had a lot of serious things thrown at me all at once in my early 20s and I'm the friend everyone turns to when they need help. It was relieving to see something so relatable on a screen.
I'm that friend too. The one my friend group turns to for advice or the one who helps solve disputes. I have a lot of things I myself need to sort out, I'm an absolute mess of things I need to do and sort out, but if I can help others with their own problems, seeing them relax or make up, it makes it all the more worth it for me and makes my own burdens not as heavy.
Best Disney film in years. The Colombian mystical symbolism is gorgeous. I love the story. The animation and score is perfect. This film took years to develop and complete.

This movie came out a week after my mother died of COVID. We had a very difficult relationship and Encanto has helped me deal with realizing that I will never get that apology from my mother. I'm finally beginning to process that.
The animal that was watching deadpan during Bruno's vision is a capybara. Super chill, huge rodent. Check them out on RUclips, awesome animals! Unfortunately also a victim of the exotic animal trade; they're not meant to live without other capybaras. But they do seem to get along great with other types of animals, too. As for what gift *I* would want....well, as an honorary member of House Slytherin, I would love to be able to talk to animals!
Capybara most recently made International News when their traditional territory was built over and replaced by a Golf Course. The Capybara were, like, "Okay." And proceeded to move *back* in and start grazing on the property 😁
This movie is definitely in my top ten movies period. This movies message hits me something different. I'm a first generation immigrant, being that my mother is from Mexico and my father being from Venezuela. I was a kid my father was always hard on me especially when it came to school work, which I resented at the time. Now looking back, I can see he just wanted for me to have a better life than he had, growing up in a third world country constantly broken from neverending civil wars.
I know I'm not the only one who feels the same, as I'm sure other immigrants kids can probably relate as well.
this is my favorite Disney film in recent years, bumping Zootopia (another really good Disney film that you should check out) to the #2 slot.

I’ve watched this movie maybe a dozen times now, and even just the snippets leave me in tears. This movie may have been based in Colombia, but the message can be so relevant for people all over the world. Taking magic out of the picture, there are families dealing with generational trauma, dysfunction, disillusioned perceptions, and so on and they sometimes never find peace. I felt that through this movie as I’ve experienced abuse by the hands of my family for nearly 20 years. I struggle everyday to keep going, to keep breathing, to keep fighting to live, but this movie gave me hope that maybe someday I’ll find peace too. I love it so much, it makes my heart feel healed even if it’s for a little while.

When young Mirabel touches the candle the flame turns into Abuela. The candle knew. Mirabel's door is the front door of the house.
True story: when I was little, I was placed in a gifted program at school (I can't remember what age I was exactly, but I don't think I was any higher than 1st grade). First day in that class, I remember the teacher said that we were chosen to be there because we had brains like super computers, but every time we did anything in that class, I was always lagging behind, and in hindsight, the teacher was a really $h!ty person. I distinctly remember one time when I hadn't understood the directions she gave on how to do a set of problems. She didn't see my raised hand because she had her head down, facing some papers or something on her desk (it was a *long* time ago so I don't remember exactly what it was), so I walked up to her desk to ask for help, but I only got as far as saying "Um, I'm a bit con..." before she *immediately* cut me off by going "Ahbuhbuhbuhbuh. Go do it." I tried to ask for help again. "But I don't under....." "Ahbuhbuhbuhbuh! Go do it!" This woman *refused* to even hear me say that I didn't understand and needed help. I realized she wasn't gonna listen and went back to my seat and just stared at the text book and paper hopelessly for the remainder of the class, not able to do *anything* because I didn't have the slightest idea what I was doing or where to start, then at the end of class when she went around collecting the papers, she took one look at mine and said "Why didn't you do the work I told you to do?!" to which I responded "I didn't know how. That's why I tried to ask for..." She cut me off again and got all angry with me, saying "I explained this at the start of class! If you didn't understand you should have raised your hand and asked then!" I obviously responded "I did raise my hand. You weren't looking up to see it so I tried going up to your desk to ask for help, but you just told me to go do it." Obviously she deflected the blame back onto me again. "You should have asked your questions while I was explaining the part you didn't understand!" "I didn't understand any of it!" "So you just weren't paying attention!" "I was paying attention, I just didn't understand what you were...." "Ahbuhbuhbuhbuh. That's enough. I don't wanna hear any more excuses. You won't get to participate in the next fun activity we do since you decided you didn't want to do your work." I dropped out of the gifted program shortly thereafter, and shortly after that, I got diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, so this movie kinda hit hard on a couple of levels for me.
My hope with this movie is that everyone remembers a bit of their own worth and miracle of their existence. Just a little bit. Your videos always give me a bit more light than before. May you be reminded of the light you shine out for us to see.

So I am half Colombian myself. My own abuelo is a refugee from La Violencia so that scene from Dos Oruguitas broke me because it was like seeing him up there. But this movie helped me understand why mom pushed me so hard. Ah. Just so so important for Colombian families 💗💗💗

Bruno is superstitious since everyone has labelled him as 'bad luck" practically his whole life, so he's devoloped a routine to ward off the bad luck. He knocks on wood, holds his breath, crosses his fingers when he crosses thresh holds and tosses salt over his left shoulder. He avoids stepping on the cracks in the walls, using "Hernando" and "Jorje" to patch the cracks and chants a rhyme "Sana Sana". Even him holding a broom upside down in Some cultures is supposed to ward off unwanted visitors( like Mirabel trying to convince him to do a vision)
There is so much good stuff in the Bruno song. All the flow difference. All the parts coming together and working so perfectly but each are so different. It’s so hard to write stuff like that.

The animation in Moana and Coco was beautiful but the animation in this movie is simply stunning.
The thing I loved most about this Disney movie that made it so different from their previous ones is that they work really hard to make ALL the family characters center stage. Way more than the typical 1-3 characters! And that means that people can relate to the movie in TOTALLY different ways! My best friend and I both _adore_ this movie and related to it so much -- but for completely opposite reasons!
She related strongly to Mirabel and "Waiting on a Miracle", because she's still trying to figure out who she wants to be and what she wants to do with her life. But everyone else in her family (including me) have already figured out our talents and are all very driven go-getter Type A people. So she hardcore related to Mirable feeling left behind by her gifted powerful family.
But *_I_* related hardcore to Luisa and "Surface Pressure", because even though it seems like I've got everything together -- because I know who I am, what I'm capable of, and where I'm going with my life -- that means that I live with _so much pressure,_ that I put on myself AND that other people expect of me.
Those are completely different ways to relate to a single movie. It's _groundbreaking_ for Disney.

Encanto is such a special movie to me. My step-family is Colombian so it holds a special place just for that. But also because I relate to Mirabel on a personal level. Her treatment as falling into an awkward spot in her family that leads her to getting overlooked or dismissed or forgotten about is similar in some ways to how I fall in my family: too American for the German side, too American for the Colombian side, and a 6th wheel when I visit my dad and stepmom and their family (separated parents deal). I love them, and I know they love me, but sometimes it can feel like you just don’t belong and working through that to grow closer to your family is an ever changing and ever lasting task but can be so rewarding in the end.
Also Encanto is the only movie that made me laugh, then cry, then laugh, then cry back to back like that within the first 10-15 minutes when I first saw it. That definitely means something at least.
Eyyy I'm also half Puerto Rican and learning Spanish! Just know that Puerto Ricans don't gatekeep our culture just because of the language barrier ànd that it's as every bit of your culture as you want it to be! Lin Manuel Miranda who is also Puerto Rican did the music for this and actually right after Antonio comes back to the crowd in his room, you can actually hear someone shout "Wepa!!!" Which is something only Puerto Ricans say so I imagine Lin made sure that was added lol

Despite the fact that things don't always work out between families, and some families are more than just awful - plain abusive, I think we really need this type of movie, one with a fairytale ending where a family reconciles and talks to each other about their struggles in the end. It can give some people a path forward.

When Mirabel was a child and she touched the candle, she rubs her hands on her dress before reaching for the door. She transferred the magic from the candle into herself instead of the door.
That's why the door didn't work.

Several people have pointed out the Doctor Who reference (the girl asking 'It's bigger on the inside?!!!!!'), as well as the nod to Frozen, but so far no one's mentioned the Mission: Impossible reference (Mirabel: This package is going to self-destruct in...). I also like the bit in 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' where Mirabel squints as she walks from the dark interior into the sunlit plaza until her eyes adjust to the change in light leverls.
This is for me a 10 of a 10, those landscape exist in Colombia, are the colors we see in certain places in our mágica country

I love Encanto and I have a lot to say so here goes. There is a theory that Abuello became the Casita (they both do the little wave, there are butterflies everywhere which symbolizes his spirit and when Abella and Abuello met, and Casita and Abuello both do everything they can to help and protect the family). Also I believe that Mirabel is the next Keeper of the Candle (Abuela's role). She is the glue that keeps her family together. And she didn't get a door 1) because that position was currently being filled and 2) because she needed to embrace everyone in her family, including herself. Her role is to strengthen and help the family grow, something Abuela thought she was doing, but lost sight of the real reason for the miracle. Abuela has been mourning her husband for 50 years (throughout the movie she wears a black shawl to symbolize this) but after the scene with Mirabel she no longer wears it. I also love that the first thing Abuela does after opening up to Mirabel is hug Bruno symbolizing her embracing the future.
Dolores knew that Bruno was there the whole time, because like she said, she can always "hear him sort of muttering and mumbling"
