    Indonesia is an archipelago country consisting of 15.000 islands, which only few are inhabited. Each province, each city has its own unique flavor. A satay in madura east java would definitely be different with satay in padang. Sambal is chili paste that is very commonly eaten or used in our cooking, in java alone, they differ from east java to west java. Indonesia is also a country that was colonized for a very..very long time. Starting from 1512 (the coming of portugese to search for spices in Maluku) till 1945. Colonized by major countries such as Portugal, Spain (but then kicked out by portugese), Netherlands (the longest 350 years), England, America, and finally Japan. Other influences might have been taken during the spice trade with Chinese, Arabs, Egyptians, Indians. India was also the country that made Indonesian people literate, they shared their culture including religion, then came muslims from Arab, christians from the west colonizers, then later Buddhist and Konghucu. There are of course still some old original beliefs of indonesia that still exist today (which is too much to mention). From there, feel free to imagine how diverse indonesian food and culture is ^_^

      All foreign Countries come to us because we got so many spices and great ingredients for food, So Native Culture already has it there and then some plantations brought here by western people to add more flair and flavor to what has been already a great food. Try some Indonesian food in New York, Adelaide and some of them actually import their ingredients from Indonesia Directly.

    I am indonesian currently living in germany. I find that western and middle eastern foods are way easier to cook compared to east/southeast asian foods, especially indonesian foods.
    There are too many different seasonings that you have to you have to mix at an extremely precise amount to achieve the perfect taste. If you put too much cheese or tomato or cream in western foods, it is still delicious. But for indonesian foods, if you put in too much ginger, soy sauce or various herbs-i-don't-know-what-the-english-word-for, it would taste like shit.
    I've mastered a lot of western foods, but can only cook 1-2 dishes from my home country. As much as I love eating cheese or kebabs, I still need my weekly share of nasi rendang.

    • @agoydito
      @agoydito 9 лет назад +8

      Oh and don't forget middle and eastern Indonesian foods! Places like Bali, Makassar, Manado and Lombok have the foods so unique that I couldn't tell which other countries have influence in it. I recommend Coto Konro, Sambal Roa, Cakalang, Sambal Bali..

      halycyon1234 rovilina there are many communities and several Indonesian restaurants in Melbourne or Sydney, sometimes the less famous one for locals are the hidden gem for Indonesian, speaking as an Indonesian who lived in Melbourne and visits Sydney a lot. As to why the restaurants are open until late, it's because Indonesian is used to have the shops open until really late back in the country.

    rendang is minangese (minang is part of indonesia) the reason its popular in malaysia is because of indonesian immigrants. malaysian usually are ignorant of its origin. they tend to label 'malay' for anything that is indonesian, because they think that most indonesian are malay which is not true. Just because indonesian spoke modern malay (bahasa indonesia) and the majority are muslims, it doesn't make us all of us are malay. only a few well-traveled malaysian are aware of indonesia ethnic diversity.

    • @Shmolguy
      @Shmolguy 8 лет назад +5

      hey. not every malaysian are like that. don't easily labelling people like that. i know rendang are originally from indonesia and minangese ancestry most of them are in negeri sembilan malaysia. same to bakso, ayam penyet and others damn food of javanese because many javanese ancestry are also in malaysia. and one more thing, it is true that most of indonesian are not malay but through history south east asia have the same ancestor.
      last, you can be so proud of your country and i respect that, but don't condemn other country like you are the origin of everything on earth. please respect us like we respect you.

    • @Mau-vr7tk
      @Mau-vr7tk 8 лет назад

      syahril syuhada the thing is indonesia and malaysia seems to have different definition of 'malay'. In indonesia, aceh, minang, and java are not *traditionally * considered as malay. Even this wiki agrees that minangese and javanese are *assimilated* groups. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malays_(ethnic_group) Do their identity dissappear after they come to malaysia? I found it a pretty sad if its true. There is another problematic thing about malay definition in malaysia, they are required to be a muslim. Malay are bumiputera, and bumiputera have to be muslim www.quora.com/If-an-Indonesian-become-a-citizen-of-Malaysia-will-they-considered-Bumiputera . A non-muslim ethic malay is not a malay if they are not muslim. Hmm

    • @Shmolguy
      @Shmolguy 8 лет назад

      Elise Wiradikusuma one more thing, my uncle are muslim from indonesia, and have work in malaysia more than 15 years, he did get the citizenship, but not bumiputra. same to my friend's mom. their sons and daughters can get bumiputra because they married to malay, muslim citizen. and even though i am malay, i proudly say that i come from the bloodline of minang. so please. don't criticize other country while you are still having problem with jokowi, who name like indonesian, wearing a songkok but he is a chinese. is he losing his identity as a chinese ancestry? shame on you.
