Why does everyone think that metal is "growling" and brutal vocals???It's not. It's the music, powerfull riffs, heavy sound. There are MANY different genres and mixtures of those genres through the years but it seems that people that don't know about it have associated the growls from death or black metal with metal in general.Power/speed metal has no growls, progressive has no growls. It's not about the vocals but about the music...Try listening to some Savatage or Helloween or Dream Theater, hell even Slayer's Seasons in the abyss album, you'll understand what i'm saying.
If you watch their OFFICIAL video for this song, you won't have any doubts about what this song is about. Iron Maiden has always been about EPIC SONGS. Not just loud, heavy and intricate, but epic music combined with epic stories. In this case, the plight of Native Americans. The lyric writers in the band are also avid readers, so that translates to larger-than-life themes in thier songs & albums. 🎶👍
Many metal artists, especially Iron Maiden, rarely sing about first hand experiences. They are more oriented towards the happenings that occurred long beyond living memory and are usually educational. Up the irons 🤘🏻
I believe this song is about European settlers and colonists coming to the "New World" and massacring the natives. Iron Maiden are definitely deep into historical themes. They are very well educated and incredibly well read. Not to mention superb musicians.
In elementary school in the '70s, I was fed this idea that the Europeans landed in a "New World" filled with savages and wilderness. According to those history books, they did the continent a favor by taming the savages and bringing them civilization. This was further reinforced by the Cowboy-Indian conflicts that were so prominent in the westerns that were frequently airing on the weekends. Hearing this song for the first time in middle school made me realize that there is a completely different side to this story that had been completely neglected by our schoolbooks. I remember a schoolmate bringing this up in social studies class and my school teacher (who was one of the nicest ladies I've ever met) awkwardly acknowledging that there was, in fact more to this story than what our schoolbook was presenting.
I`ve seen Iron Maiden twice back in the 80s and to this day and I`ve seen a lot, they had the loudest show. Bruce has excellent vocals and was very energetic! This is my favorite song by them! Keep On Rockin'
Great reaction! You guys are in Florida, right? The drummer of Iron Maiden, Nikko McBrain, has a restaurant down in Coral Gables called "Rock N Roll Ribs" and they have great food! It's a small place but they have a lot of great memorabilia in there, not just Iron Maiden, but from many bands! I saw Maiden in concert 3 times and the energy is so charged! Steve Harris, the bass player, runs a maratho every night going back and forth from one side of the stage to the other screaming out the lyrics! You can hear him without a microphone! They have a mascot named "Eddie" who is on the cover of every album and his appearance changes on every album and he's in every concert too! You should check out one of their concert videos like "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Bruce's singing is incredible!
Iron Maiden are the best of British heavy metal. I've been a fan since 1980. They are very melodic and Bruce has a very theatrical voice, inspired by many including Ronnie James Dio and Ian Gillian. It's time you watched them live. Scream for me Lex! Scream for me Lex!! Up the Irons!!!

@@jmhaces Not my country, not Maiden's country. I said 'political' because current american climate. I say political because of Americas current success in making such historical events 'political' in current day. The Trooper doesn't really annoy the Crimeans, and Aces High doesn't really upset the Germans, but Americans are a bit sensitive about 'raping the women and wasting the men', historically speaking, wouldn't u say?
Why, oh why do you PAUSE SO EARLY in ALL your FIRST TIME LISTENS!!! 55 seconds in and it’s paused!? No one can really give an opinion in that timeframe!!! Listen, I LOVE ❤️ the bulk of your reactions and am not meaning to come across rude, but to ask what each other’s thought are, so soon in to the bulk of your videos, ruins the flow of the reaction!!!
The Trooper was about the charge of the light brigade. Run to the hills is about native american genocide. It's not fucking rocket science. Of course it's a story...most songs are. Jeez
The 1st verse of the song tells the story from the perspective of the Native American “Indians” then it switches to the perspective of the “white man” and doesn’t paint a very pretty picture. This story of man conquering man to take their land and resources, while not pretty is one that repeats throughout the history of men. When the thirst and greed becomes more than just about survival. We don’t wish just to survive, but to thrive. Often meaning taking from others to gain. War is hell, but it makes for great story telling, especially in the context of hard rock and heavy metal. As others have mentioned Steve Harris the bassist is the primary song writer for Maiden and the lyrical ideas come from books as an avid reader of historical fact and fiction as well as sci fi and fantasy. We’ll continue to try to learn from our past otherwise we’re doomed to repeat it, which unfortunately more often than not seems to the case. Ugly history or not, as a “white man”:of then US, I am a benefactor of it and can think of many worse places to have been born. Interesting when you stop to think about how for many just the place you are born into the world, your environment, can dictate much of your life and shaping your experience and who you are.
Brad , please just stop worrying about the lyrics in every tune and follow Lex’s lead and let the music take over. You’re missing the point of rock, lyrics can be important or just another instrument to carry the melody. Even the artists will tell you quite often the lyrics are secondary to the music. Please stop reading and let the music do the talking.
Americans are the Natives of the entire Continent from Canada all the way south to Argentina. America is an Entire Continent not a country. People confuse a country inside America named United States 🇺🇸 for the American continent. They are geographically challenged
He actually says Injans but the written lyrics say Indians. Injans was another name for native Americans. The music video is interesting. This is the story of the whites taking the land from the native Americans told from the side of the natives. Iron Maiden like to tell historical stories especially ones of war or famous battles. Many metal bands like to sing about this type of thing. Power Metal band Sabaton only sing about war. I like music that tells a different side of like. One that we normally try to forget ever happened. I come from Australia and we have the same history with our native Aboriginals. The British come in and stole their land. We have only just now recognised their heritage but we still have a long way to go to make up for what they went through. One day they might get equal rights but that is a long way off.
Genocide. The song is about THE Native North American genocide. The one that most of us here viewing and commenting on this intertube video have largely benefited from.
This song is fitting today. It is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The uncovering of the bodies of indigenous children buried at residential schools have been forefront in our news all year. The children were forced into these schools to try to assimilate them and they fell prey to horrific abuses by both the government and churches of the day. People on both sides of the political spectrum disagree about the best way to move forward. But anyone without some empathy for those children and the families they were ripped away from, doesn't have a heart.
This is basically a song about Native Americans in the 19th century and what they went through. When they sing the chorus "Run to the Hills" and you hear Bruce singing high and low at the same time it is very pleasing because the notes are harmonics. Iron Maiden does this a lot, not only with the vocals but really a whole lot with the guitars.
Every once in awhile there are HEROs. Then there are the one in a million LEGENDS.....THEN...there is the bass...GOD...Steve Harris. There is no Iron Maiden without him.

If you want another band that sing about history check out Sabaton.
Or Joey Belladonna from Anthrax
They are telling the story from two points of view.
This is a fundamental song of the heavy metal genre.
If you watch their OFFICIAL video for this song, you won't have any doubts about what this song is about.
Iron Maiden has always been about EPIC SONGS. Not just loud, heavy and intricate, but epic music combined with epic stories. In this case, the plight of Native Americans. The lyric writers in the band are also avid readers, so that translates to larger-than-life themes
in thier songs & albums. 🎶👍
Many metal artists, especially Iron Maiden, rarely sing about first hand experiences. They are more oriented towards the happenings that occurred long beyond living memory and are usually educational. Up the irons 🤘🏻
"I think they're telling a story". Yes. Yes they are. Every song. Maiden! \m/ \m/ Up the Irons!
I believe this song is about European settlers and colonists coming to the "New World" and massacring the natives. Iron Maiden are definitely deep into historical themes. They are very well educated and incredibly well read. Not to mention superb musicians.
You should watch the videoclip. It’s really funny
The drummer is working hard in this one. Good reaction guys!
Iron Maiden "How would you like your stories?" Me "Metal please!"
There’s always three sides to a story between two opponents. The third is the truth.
@@michaelkulis6008 the middle ground?
Love you guys...really do...but I watch your reactions sometimes just to see if you will get one right.
Imagine 1982 this was an almost hourly on mtv. Great days!
Another one you guys would like from Iron Maiden is "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner".
When are we going to get some Mad Season. It's Layne singing with members of Pearl Jam.
Criminally forgotten album. Wake Up is such a great song.
If it wasn't for Iron Maiden and School House Rock I would have never passed High School History or English
👍
An early 70’s pop song with the same lyrical vibe is “Indian Reservation” by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Huge hit in the day!
You must become acquainted with Maiden's "Eddie"! They change his look for every album -- it's really kool when he ominously appears on stage. 💀
I`ve seen Iron Maiden twice back in the 80s and to this day and I`ve seen a lot, they had the loudest show. Bruce has excellent vocals and was very energetic! This is my favorite song by them! Keep On Rockin'
They kill it Live indeed! One of my favorite shows, and like you, have seen a lot.
@Penderyn Lewsyn No offence meant, but it was known as The New Wave of BRITISH Heavy Metal and Iron Maiden are the best example of this in my opinion, hence my comment. I am directly descended from an ancient King of Ireland and I have relatives in Scotland and Wales, so I respect all UK nationalities, my friend
Lex is turning into a "Rocker" l like watching how she gets into the music. Lots of energy and she seems to be having fun. She would have went to many shows I'm sure of she grew up in that era. 😁
Best metal band
Best Metal album
Best line up
Always nice to hear the amazing and incredible drummer Clive Burr! (Rip) Best metal drummer!
There from London England 🏴 the best heavy metal 🎸 band ever
Yes!! 🇬🇧 I feel like I’m British listening to this song!
Hi Christy M, I am British and I have learnt some history from their songs, some of it British! I just love the galloping bass and drums on this one, really does feel like full gallop on horseback.
@@mikephillips8810 according to AncestryDNA I’m 23% English and every time I hear this song I feel those genes calling. You are right I’m on horseback and I’m holding the Union Jack flag at full charge!
Wen the Spain and Europe come to América and taken the Native Americans Lands and Lives☠ so ther have to run to the hills to tray lo Live👺IRON MAIDEN is from England👹🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸🎸🎸i see them in concert back in 1994 in San Juan Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and the stage was like a MOVIE 😈
One of the very few 'political' songs in the Maiden repertoire. Up The Irons \m/
Very few?! 😂
@@Ty_Ranus Yeah, didn't you know that songs based on historical themes only count as political when they talk about stuff that happened in your own country? 😂
Notice the galloping rythm, as if in horseback. It's about the British slaughtering Native Americans.
What’s Brads background? Dude has tunnel vision. Don’t you know history? Frustrating unless your playing a Part.
Y'all...the origins of this song are taught in basic American history class. Or maybe it's not anymore, I wouldn't be surprised.
You need to watch it live and the vvideo.XOXO Brandi Modrak XOXO means hugs and Kisses to you and your family.
Please learn before you speak
Oh you two…when you gonna listen😅, Iron Maiden must be experienced live…
Omg Shame on you it's about the murder and oppression of the red Indians by the American colonists. It tells the story in the lyrics.
I saw Iron Maiden in 82 Piece of Mind tour....incredible show....
If you think this is "musical" is because you didn't heard power metal yet
One day they might get equal rights but that is a long way off.
alexander the great...............nobody tells a story in song like maiden
I saw the Iron Maiden tour for Number of the Beast. Bruce’s voice was as good as the album.
If you like the storytelling, do Dance of Death by Iron Maiden. One of my favourites
Can u guys react to Pink Floyd “breathe” and Pink Floyd “one of my turns”
Pretty heavy song lyrically considering this was their biggest "radio hit"
This is basically a song about Native Americans in the 19th century and what they went through. When they sing the chorus "Run to the Hills" and you hear Bruce singing high and low at the same time it is very pleasing because the notes are harmonics. Iron Maiden does this a lot, not only with the vocals but really a whole lot with the guitars.
I would love to see iron maiden yes ago. Yeah Bruce has sum voice especially singing live....
"I wonder what story they tell, maybe we find out by the end of the song" Seriously? It's not like It's very subtle up to that point.
Every once in awhile there are HEROs. Then there are the one in a million LEGENDS.....THEN...there is the bass...GOD...Steve Harris. There is no Iron Maiden without him.
Role Playing?! I want to like you guys, but you're making this so hard.
React Raphael mendes cover iron Maiden hallowed be thy name
Next Maiden Song:..."Revelations" I think it's their best song of All Time. 1983 Piece of Mind..it's a joy to listen to even after 38 years!!
Iron Maiden "Must" always be Live videos it's them at their Best !!! : D
a song about imperialist actions on native people..a sad tale but thrilling song.
This is the song that plays in my head every time my girl is mad
Brad, look up some LIVE CLIPS with Iron Maiden and you will most certainly "get it" 😊👍 The energy, positivity and sheer joy of these six (now old) English guys is definitely why they are one of the absolute largest rock bands of all time.
don't be obsessed with race. cultural appropriation is racist separation
YES BRUCE VOCAL RANGE IS FANTASTIC AND AMAZING!!!!
after those first two lines of the song you didn't get the story they were gonna tell?? man, learn some history. wow.
Really cheerful tune for a horrific song about rape and murder.
It's about the destruction of the Cree nation. It says it right in the song lyrics.
React to Alexander the Great, You’ll love it trust me!!!
