This song is about a TV programme in the UK FROM THE 60'S of the same name. It had a cult following and was about a man who worked for the government and resigned so was captured and placed in a surreal village (the place really exists and is called Portmerion in north Wales and is amazing). He tries to escape in every episode but always gets caught - 17 made all brilliant - filmed in technicolour. He was assigned the number 6 as his name, played by American Patrick McGoohan.
Yeah he kept being caught by a bloody big inflatable ball running along the beach, fantastic for its time
Rover
Was possibly an extension of the John Drake, Dangerman. Fantastic series and so ahead of its time. The 2000s remake was abysmal and totally missed the point of the show.
@@dbrooks76 Dangerman, now you are talking I loved Patrick McGoohan in that he was a proper take no shit kind of guy
Be seeing you !!
Great drumming by Clive Burr RIP
Always thought he was better than Nicko
80’s Maiden, all killers, no fillers what an epic run of Albums from self titled till 7th Son.
Yep.
Yup.
Everything from 1980 to 1992 is their best work.
"Number of the Beast" is a masterpiece of an album! Beginning to end, every song is a classic.
Hell yeah! Their best work I think!
At the time, it was panned by critics...bet they are sorry now. 🤘
Yep every song is good on this album
A great Iron Maiden "deep cut" - I don't think they played it live for years, but are doing so again now
They brought the song back during the Maiden England Tour from 2012-14 but haven't played it since. I thankfully saw them play it in 2012.
Yes, I saw them in 2012 in San Antonio and they played it. Awesome!! I feel like it's a good tribute to Clive Burr.
This is the music I grew up with in my teenage years and it is awesome to see somebody hear it and enjoy it for the first time. I am a new subscriber and think you two are the best on you tube with reaction videos....keep up the good work 🤘🤪🤘
One of my favorite Maiden songs. Such a vastly underrated song!!
The beauty of these songs is that everytime u hear them it takes you back to that era, and the memories of discovering these incredible bands. Im 55 now, and this song still sounds incredible.
Sounds like Bruce had years and years playing with Iron Maiden on this album, and is actually his debut, clearly he fit perfectly in Iron Maiden
First time I put Number of the beast on a turntable in the 80's, I was blown away! This Album is great from start to finish! + great Artwork on the cover!
"Children of the Damned" is the best song on this album right after "Hallowed be thy Name"
Yes and Steve Harris, just shreds on the bass. On all their songs.
Totally agree. The title track and Run to the Hills are secondary to me. The great single is Hallowed Be Thy Name, and Children of the Damned is a great tune that must've been single too.
I played this song on my walkman the day I left gate of the military base after 4 years of service :D The song pretty much sums up the feeling I had at the time, where I want to start a new chapter in my life - this song has a very special place in my heart. Btw I can recommend "Where eagles dare" with Iron Maiden also :D
Strange World may be my favorite of Iron Maiden with vocalist Paul Di'Anno.
My favorite is Innocent Exile
Yes I prefer Di'anno. But he had some issues.
Just a little coke habit that Steve didn't like. Could have been more behind the scenes.
"Wrathchild"
Yeah, hardly anyone mentions "Strange World." It's absolutely sublime.
The Number Of The Beast is a really really really good album and he turns 40 this year.
RIP Clive Burr.
Up the Irons !🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 ;)
Beavis and Butthead had an episode where they were in prison for a "Scared Straight" program. The guard found them singing this song with the inmates. Awesome.
This whole album is a metal classic. Up the Irons!
Best metal album. Best Meatl band. Best Metal Line Up. Best Metal drummer - the awesome Clive Burr. His playing on the three first and best Maiden albums is perfect. No one has or will have his perfect drumming.
Rest in Power Clive! Up the Irons
Man, the first five Maiden albums are a huge part of the soundtrack of my youth. Up the Irons!!
What about Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son? Their first seven albums are amazing.
@@mournblade1066 Both really good albums that have grown on me in time, but having been a Maiden fan from the first album on, I just felt these albums didn't match the sheer intensity and inventiveness of the earlier ones.
This is an awesome song from Bruce Dickinsons first album singing with Iron Maiden, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to this one.👍
I love this song, one of my top 5 favorites from Iron Maiden. Every instrument gets to stand out musically, which doesn't always happen in metal songs. The drums on the intro are simply badass, almost a 70s hard rock vibe, but with a metal punch. Harris' bass throughout the tune is creative & interesting. And those solos...damn...melodic & blistering as always on this album...I could listen to them all day long, lol, but I'm a guitarist 🤷♂😏. And how many other bands give such time to pre-solo bridges in songs like these guys do? It adds something emotionally.
Awesome deep dive here. I always loved Clive Burr's drumming on this album. RIP❤
✌❤🇨🇦
As others have noted, the opening comes from one of the most interesting TV shows ever made. It stars a guy who had been the title character in a show called Secret Agent. He resigns from his job, presumably as a secret agent (although it is never said he is the same character) and wakes up on an idyllic Island with a Village Green. He is free to do anything but leave. And the way that inanimate objects hem him in if he tries to leave is part of the fun of the show. Meanwhile he tries to figure out who is in charge (number 1) but instead winds up dealing with an ever changing number of second in commands (number 2). The show ended before any of its mysteries was actually explained.
They got permission from the star of the show to make the song about the show and to include the quotes.
I love the TV show, pretty cool that it inspired this song
I disagree that the show ended before any of it's myseries was explained though ;)
I just wanna say how grateful I am to you guys and this channel because nor only do I get to hear some much loved classics but I also get to hear some songs I wouldn't have otherwise thought to listen to.
The "sound clip" at the beginning is a from a show called "The Prisoner" which was the inspiration this song. It was an old BBC show from the late 60s. it was a bizarre show that felt conspiratorial, paranoia, overall general sense of injustice.
I sort of watched "The Prisoner" on PBS in the 70's but I am familiar with it.
It's pretty relevant now
My first time seeing a reaction to one of my favorite songs. Bought this album off the rack when I was 12 in 82' , it certainly didn't disappoint. 1982 Iron Maiden is a legacy for the ages to enjoy.
One of my top ten Maiden songs. The late great Clive Burr on drums. RIP
Great reaction as always. Lex had joined the tanks months ago.
They should follow this Iron's reaction with "Caught somewhere in time"
Great Iron Maiden song off NOTB. The intro is from the British TV show from 1967 and the inspiration for the song. As a long time Maiden fan also check out -
Prowler, Strange World, Iron Maiden, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Killers, Prodigal Son, Purgatory, Invaders, 22 Acacia Avenue, Gangland, Where Eagles Dare, Revelations, Die With Your Boots On, To Tame a Land, Aces High, Flash of the Blade, Back in the Village, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Caught Somewhere in Time, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Stranger in a Strange Land, Alexander the Great, Infinite Dreams, The Evil That Men Do, The Clairvoyant, Be Quick or be Dead, The Wicker Man, Ghost of the Navigator, Brave New World, Dream of Mirrors, Out of the Silent Planet, No More Lies, Dance of Death, Paschendale, Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, The Longest Day, El Dorado, When the Wild Wind Blows. I did not include the 11 songs that Brad and Lex already reacted to, check their list.
😂 The amount of songs you listed
That's quite a list! 😆🤘
One of the most underrated songs in music history 🤘
One of my favorite iron maiden albums of all time! What a great song. All the songs on the Number Of The Beast are fantastic. This is 1983 at its finest!! It’s why we all love iron maiden. The pioneers of heavy metal.
Gotta do “Run To The Hill” now!!
Totally agree ! Number of the beast is a terrific album ! Another one is PowerSlave.
1982
What . A . Song! Incredible beat. Maiden just get my heart racing. The solo!! You can follow which ever instrument you want and be wickedly entertained!
Imagine being a a jumbo jet and the lead singer for Iron Maiden walks out and says hello ladies and gentlemen I'll be your captain for this flight.
Maiden never got air time in the 80s. We did listen to this in the ARMY.
One of the BEST Maiden songs that rarely gets mentioned amongst their best … truly epic bridge and solo \m/\m/
I have not heard this in years! Classic Maiden.
Those drums and that groove!
0:33 "WHAAAT?!"
Lucky Brad!!!
the song is about the TV show "The Prisoner" with Patrick McGoohan for the most part
Yep
my fave album back in the day. early 80's. great song.
One of my favorites still!!
5:02, my favorite part of the song! Love that riff that Adrian Smith does and then the back come in.
How could this guy stay so emotionless listening to these incredible solos?)
Like being on the front of a sailing ship, running headlong into a stormy sea. Triumphant melodies that are lifting off the ground instead of linear plodding along in monster boots or hauling ass in a linear dragster.
The drums and bass on this song is just the best thing I’ve heard from them 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Lex allways in tune with music...love her!
Great song, Great reaction, you guys never fail to make me laugh and smile. Good people.
I love this song. Reminds me of when I got realesed on parole.
That took me back to my high school weight room! Get pumped! Haha!
Need to do When the wild wind blows. Epic music and great lyrics.
This Iron Maiden is an iconic lp for them.
Yes! One of my favorite Maiden tunes - you should ABSOLUTELY crank up 22 Acacia Avenue - it's kind of a sequel to Charlotte the Harlot from their first album. The final flourish is one of Maiden's greatest musical pieces, IMO. YOU ALL ROCK! Keep 'em coming you beautiful people! Nothing against Nicko, but I really wish Clive Burr has stuck around on drums.
Jeff Blevins, a man of culture
If I've had one drink too many, the videos of Clive Burr from '79/'80 playing live gets really bittersweet. Made the drums a lead instrument
So true really a masterpiece, this was when maiden peaked, the sound changed and music became more like prog,
Clive really ripped the drums on everything and the sound they wanted, meant that Harris needed a less forthright drummer, more in the background, nothing against Nicko but Clive was the man RIP
You e barely scratched the surface with Maiden, fictional songs, non fiction, there’s so much variation through the decades
Fun Fact: The intro is from a 17 episode British television series of the same title. The dialogue also began every episode of the show.
Great show, too. I used to watch it on PBS back in the 80s, when it came on right before Dr. Who.
Iron Maiden at its finest! Great Song!!
Damn these boys put out some fantastic tunes!!!!!
One of if not the Greatest metal band. Still killing it live today
Lol Millennials thinking they commonly played Iron Maiden on the radio in the 80's. Maybe in LA and NYC once a month at 3am on a specialty or public access station back then, but here in flyover country I didn't hear a classic 80's Maiden song on a local hard rock station until the mid 2000's, and that's still rarely.
Growing up in the bible belt of Southern Mississippi during the "satanic panic" days was such a trip. Pastors burning records and playing albums backwards during teen Sunday school lessons... they were absolutely convinced that the devil was literally speaking to kids through bands like Maiden, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, etc. It's hard to believe nowadays, but they really did whip parents up into a frenzy back in the day. I kind of outgrew Maiden by the time I had discovered heavier bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, etc... it had all become a little "cheesy" for my tastes I guess. But looking back now I can really appreciate the genius of Iron Maiden - from the incredible musicianship to the unique artwork, they created a real mystique that captured an entire generation of kid's imaginations. I was fortunate enough to see the World Slavery Tour in Biloxi, MS when I was around 13 years old or so. I told my parents that I was spending the night with a friend and a group of us snuck down to Biloxi with a group of older kids to see Iron Maiden w/ WASP, and it was truly an incredible experience that I'll never forget!
That run of Dickinson albums - Number of the Beast/Piece of Mind/Powerslave (and of course Live After Death) were such a huge part of my pre-teen/early teen years. I had EVERY poster of Eddie covering my walls, freaking my parents out 🤣! The Purgatory poster was the one that stands out in my mind the most - that one terrorized my Mom the most I think hehe. LONG LIVE IRON MAIDEN! 🤘
Their Run To The Hills is my favorite. Don't forget that they have a song called Iron Maiden as well.
"I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered! My life is my own!"
Up the F'n Irons! I got to see this Maiden line-up on the Number of the Beast Tour in '82. RIP Clive Burr (drummer)
They may be a British band, but the drummer lives in Palm Beach County, and he has a Maiden themed BBQ restaurant called Rock N Roll Ribs y'all should check out.
Damn good restaurant! I was just down in Boca Raton in February, and lunch there was the happiest memory from the trip. Best BBQ ribs I've ever had.
Only 1/3 of Maiden lives in Britain these days. Janick's somewhere outside of Hartlepool, I forget exactly where, and I believe Steve is still in London or close to it. But yeah, Nicko's in Boca Raton, FL, Dave's in Hawaii, Adrian's in Canada although I don't recall where, and Bruce has lived in France the last few years.
Love me some Iron Maiden. And yeah, I had never heard of that British spy show from the 1960s called The Prisoner, as others have mentioned, until I was in my twenties sometime in the 1980s. Twin Peaks was airing for the first time, and a friend of mine would host dinner parties where we would go over there once a week on Twin Peaks night, and then we would play an episode of The Prisoner and have so much fun with it, and then Twin Peaks would come on and we would watch that and eat. Such fun.
Hahha just listening to this reminds me of when I had not a care in the world sat at home playing atari st listening to this hahaha brilliant happy days.
my teen just popped in to say remember this shit lol Steve's bass lines in this song made me want to get a bass (former guitarist wannabe ) it's all about the bass as they say keep rocking guys I love your reactions 🤘
This album has so many classics on it. My personal favourite is Children of the Damned and it’s definitely worth checking out. The power of the chorus contrasted by the ballad-like verse and then the frantic ending…just a metal classic.
YES !!! 🤘😎 UP THE IRONS
I always tell my young drummers,to listen to Clive Burr..one of the greats.. I love his snare work he doesn't use rolls use a snare and uses Brakes in his hi-hats and its symbols credible drummer and what a foot on that bass drum..Nicko always says he has hard time playing clives stuff..incredible drummer..
You both really should see them in concert if you have the opportunity
Im glad you are reacting to the less known Maiden songs
The spoken excerpt in the beginning is from a 60's tv show called The Prisoner about a big brother/1984 society. It was very popular & had surreal storylines. There was a white blob that was sent to kill dissidents & tracked you down(soon to be replaced by drones in our own).
Rover
One of my favorite Maiden tracks!
Lex. My god your takes are epic and beautiful.
I love the early Maiden stuff
My favorite Iron Maiden album is " Killers " it was also my first concert.
Clive rocks on drums! Nice choice reaction!
Still have this album and turntable in my parents attic amongst other albums
I remember the series 'The Prisoner'... when number 6 tried to escape a giant balloon came and stopped him on the beach :-)
Clive Burr drumming is badass🤘🤘
As I am mostly a rhythm guitar player this is such a fun song to play.
Yes I was wondering if you guys were going to do this song my favourite maiden tune the drumming on this track are intense.
What an amazing album this was.
The late Clive Burr banging out this one on the drum kit. May he RIP.
Lex has a beautiful smile, brad is in concentration mode
This one is amazing live!
This is my favorite iron maiden album of all time
Love this one, but please go back and do some Maiden when Paul Di'anno was singing. "Ides of March/Wrathchild", "Killers", "Murders in the Rue Morgue".
I saw Maiden for the first time on 2013, and I cried singing the chorus of this song 🤣
I was literally a prisoner in the 80's and yes I listened to this song.
Not only do I think that this album is Iron Maiden's best but also is one of the best hard rock and heavy metal albums period! It would for sure be one of my deserted island records. Steve Harris' bass lines are just amazing! My favorite song is the title track, which Brad and Lex have already done, but 22 Acacia Avenue is another banger!
They should do the whole Charlotte saga - Charlotte The Harlot, 22 Acacia Avenue, Hooks In You, and From Here To Eternity.
Wife here..ROCK OUT YOU TWO🤘!!
Probably Iron Maiden's best album. Number of the Beast
One of my favorite of maiden
Lex is the best she’s so funny I love the way she Explaines a song, she’s seem so cool.
In addition to the 1960s TV series *The Prisoner,* there was also a 2009 television miniseries based on the original staring Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen.
Deep cut Maiden - Nice!
My first concert was Maiden. A tad nervous lol. 13ish I think I was. Years later I seen them again and happened to see Bruce walking around the mall during the day before the concert. I didn't bother him. Should have, maybe could have been given an upgrade 😁
Are you kidding me, The Prisoner reaction?. Thank you!! 22 Acacia Avenue should be next. UP THE IRONS
They should do Charlotte The Harlot first - gotta get her saga in order, you know!
This is one of my favorite Iron Maiden songs. You also gotta check out the bands, Godsmack and Tesla!!!
Great stuff! If someone asks, what is classic Heavy Metal, just play this song with this awesome intro! And this epic solo! More Metal is not possible! Greetings from Germany 👍⚡️🤘
Everyones who listened to iron maiden song surely shake their head and sometimes even head banging
