My favorite Iron Maiden drumming song. It introduced new drummer Nicko McBrain to Iron Maiden with a bang, lol.. Steve Harris wrote this song based on the 1968 movie of the same name. The song is based on an Alistair Maclean novel, published in 1967, and that was also made into a film(1968) starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, about a WWII covert rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps, "The Eagles Nest". Burton plays the role of Major John Smith. Who really is this character? Could he be a double agent spying for both Britain and Germany? And why is this American general so important? Read the book and/or watch the film.

Fun fact: apart from this song, the "Piece of mind" album also features another song based on a book, namely "To tame a land", based on "Dune" by Frank Herbert. Sadly, Frank Herbert turned out to be a heavy metal hater and tried to have the latter song removed from the album before release. His publisher, however, loved Iron Maiden and managed to persuade Herbert to let the song remain on the album, if they only changed the title, which was originally also "Dune". After this debacle, Iron Maiden's bassist, leader and composer of both "To tame a land" and "Where eagles dare", thought it safest to get in contact with author Alistair MacLean and ask if he had a problem with them having a song based on his novel "Where eagles dare" on their album. As it turned out, MacLean didn't have a problem with this at all.
