Hi Tom, I can relate to trying to learn things as you get older. I'm 56 years old and I've been wallowing in mediocrity on the guitar for almost 40 years. I never had that cool neighbor or cool kid in school that could play guitar and I could lean on to teach me. Thanks for being my cool "internet" neighbor. I've learned more and improved more just by watching this series. It's been invaluable not just in my playing but in my enjoyment with life. Thanks Uncle Larry!!

Same here too, David. I’m 66 and been hacking around with a guitar since I was about 14. I’ve had spells of serious practice and then not so much so, but Uncle Larry has sparked something that just won’t go out and it transcends guitar playing and music...if that makes sense. He’s by far my favorite uncle; I think so for a lot of others, too.
David Dohms yup finding an unexpected late bloom myself, as a shameless hack on the guitar, there's a fierce joy to be had in our middle years of discovering the player trapped inside us. Uncle Larry has become essential viewing in this house!

How we learn to play is by internalizing the guitar fingerboard. Most of the folks I know - have become students of their instruments - there is so much to learn just really internalizing the major scale!

I’m 43,, I gave up dreams of being a rock star many years ago but I’ve been trying to soak up as much theory as I can just for myself. The wealth of knowledge these days at your fingertips is crazy. Thanks uncle Larry (and a few others ) for that. I wish the 12 year old me had RUclips and not just a wolf Marshall rock instruction book.

Hey Tom, I'm here in Austin and just got power back today after a week without. These last few videos have been spectacular and I was able to watch them all at once. It was like coming out of the Ice Age straight into the Age of Enlightenment! I always thought of Jimmy Page and David Gilmour as my guitar guys until my wife looked over my shoulder and said "Look, it's another video from your guitar guy." You're my guitar guy Buk. Thanks
I teach. One of my sessions is learning the neck by playing one of the chords from basic shapes at at least 3 positions on the neck. And I showed that Episode to my students. Thank you.
Every time I hear Danny Gatton's name I get teary eyed and say "What a god-damned shame". Such a great talent but he just couldn't cope with life. 49 is too early to go under ANY circumstances. If you ever feel like life is overwhelming and you don't know where to turn, PLEASE talk to somebody. Your family, your best friend, if you go to church talk to your pastor. Just talk things through with somebody. You may find a solution to what is bringing you down.

The comment on memory is so very accurate, it impacts me badly at 35 after 4+ years of chronic pain from a spine injury, after the most recent surgery that didnt go as planned ive lost about 25% of my guitar ability and theory in the last few months, makes playing regularly even more important.
Accorging to my pain management specialist & psychologist its like accelerated aging of the short and long term areas of the brain.
On the upside im starting to forget how to give a fu*k and just have fun :P
Walk to your own rythm & keep playing that beautiful music man, its very inspiring :)

For me the last couple videos have made the lights come on in my head I am 52 and been trying to figure this stuff out for about 12 years and just starting to understand it so I also am a late bloomer but just glad to sit down and be able to play music even if I suck makes me a very happy man and I thank all the yt people that help thanks for the videos Tom

Been playing for a while, based in just feel in learning licks and bits of solos I want to sound like. Listen a LOT to what I want to play like. And its gotten me to a place Im having fun playing and enjoying my playing. But since you started making videos its helped me connect dots on things I should have learned at 15. Appreciate big time.

Hey now, Mr. B. I gotta say after listening to 94 episodes (and some of the earlier stuff with you on piano) I can feel the "Blues Shell" beginning to crack & my guitar repository starting to grow. I really appreciate you giving us all the knowledge man. As for the folks who don't like the repetition ... they just don't realize how important it is to learn things over and over again.
These are my favorite type of home schooling’s. Hearing that chess story was just gold. Humbling sure, but that cold smack of truth is just inspiring. Can’t thank you enough Tom.

Hey Tom. Thanks for these lessons. HS 93 was a great lesson and so was this one. Well, they all are, but these hit home with me for some reason. Maybe because my old guitar teacher when I was back in college started me on this as he was teaching me theory. He was such a badass and just a cool dude and you remind me of him. Great players with great attitudes and like you he was one of those guys that when he was done, he'd just say bye and was gone. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks.

Most of my guitar player friends and I played for years with only barre chords and pentatonics....some of my friends dont want to put in the work to understand theory and triads and such, but I always wanted to know more....and it was so hard to learn and understand, but in the last few years with you tube and guys like you and Guthrie and many others, I feel a freedom of knowledge in what I play.So at 55, I am definitely a late bloomer.....thank you for all yhat you do, and a shout out to all the other you tube guitar teachers who watch your videos , as I have learned from each of them too :)

Hi Tom! I've been watching your videos for the past two months or so, starting from the beginning I'm going here.
I don't use to comment to many videos, but your videos have been the most eye-opening and inspirational videos I have ever seen. I use to write all new ideas (chord voicings, modes, scales etc) into a notebook, and I have 10 pages dedicated to you as of now.

I am blown away by your humility. Having played for 50+ years (primarily weekends and after work) , your knowledge is so inspiring. Hey Tom, thanks for the honesty. A word of encouragement on your chess progression. In 2012 I had a stroke, all I wanted to be able to do was play guitar and ride my motorcycle. I tortured myself for the next couple years because I wasn't who I used to be. The truth is, by having to find a new way to do things caused me to see things differently. That simple view change has opened up an entirely new way of doing things. I'm 56 years old, been playing guitar since I was 5 and I'm happier about how I play now far more than when I was killin it on stage in my young day. I appreciate you because of your honesty about playing. Never give up on being a master player of chess because you are already better than you think, you just want to be better. That's the best place to be man. Creativity comes from the new, not the old, but just because we get old doesn't mean we lose that creativity.

Show #93 was the game changer for me at 46 and been playing since 12 all just playing by ear. I never had anyone to take the time to say hey study these things it will pay off in the end! I’m starting to slowly unlock watching your fingers and go oh that’s what is happening. SCREW THE ASSHEADS out there that had that someone to show the way. Tom thank you so much for the lessons!

Tom I just love your show man. Serious. I am a 50 year old guitarist that has been playing a long time, and I have learned so much watching your series because I was always decent at theory, but nowhere near your level. That and the incredibly broad spectrum of styles you can play and me being mainly a Metal/Rock guitar player, it has just opened so many doors for me. So thanks!
Yep, I "know" the CAGED system. It has been helpful for learning some rudimentary navigation around the fretboard. And because of that I was able to follow Uncle Larry's Mutated CAGED System (TM) pretty well. But if there's one thing this channel has taught me it's the difference between "knowing" something well enough to pass an exam, and having it become part of you so you can create the magic that we witness here. "Gotta do it over and over ... and over." These episodes show me that it would be worth it to put in the effort, and for that I can't thank you enough, Tom.
