Today we're talking about the Satanic Panic (it's been a long time coming). We'll talk about its roots in the 80s, and how media like Michelle Remembers spurred a panic that eventually targeted teachers and heavy metal bands alike, from Black Sabbath to Judas Priest. We'll talk about how the panic seemed to contrinue throughout the 90s and 2000s, with networks like MTV and artists like Lady Gagga, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Rihanna coming under fire for their supposed Illuminati connections. And lastly, we'll bring it into the present day, and talk about how artists like Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Sam Smith, Sabrina Carpenter and more might be proof the Satanic Panic never really left.

This goes way back. The Rolling Stones hasda song in the 1960s called "Sympathy fro the devil." They stopped playing it when, Druing the Altmont Music festival, a person in the audience was killed while they were singing it.
But, further back, in the 1920, a popular Blues singer named Robert Johnson did a song about going to the crossroads and then feeling like he was sinking down." This led to a widespread rumour that he had sold his would to the devil in exchange for his musical success. (In west African religion, which was imported to many parts of the USA, the crossroads was the home of the trickster Gold League. Due to the instance of Christian missionaries that Elgua, with his hedonistic and tricky ways, was the devil, His worshippers came to believe it to be true. And these ideas did come to North America, especially among black people in the South.
There was also a popular song called "The devil goes to Georgia,' in which the devil challenges a fiddler to a contest. If he wins, he gets a fiddle made of gold, but if he does, the devil gets his soul. He wins. (It seems to me a silly bet to take on.)
The first reference I know of somebody selling their would to the devil was in the 16th Century play "Faustus," made at a time when the majority of people in Europe did think that witches were real and served Satan. It was later made into a German opera.
Who knows how deep this kind of thing goes back in both European and African folklore, It's not new. But I've hung around Pentecostalism preachers, and they see Satan in everything, absolutely everything that is different from them. And I think that they, and their predecessors, always have.

My little pony and care bears were evil period because they did not overtly worship god and make the show about him. Thats what we were told in a old church we went to as they mentioned even the most innocent of shows and told parents not to show any of them to their kids.

everyone saying "think of the children!!!!!" always makes me so exasperated... why doesn't parents do their Job and actually teach their kids why things are bad or why they don't want them to engage with certain art instead of expecting everyone to cater to kids? because not all music, or other art, is made for kids. like obviously, lady gaga (for example) who is making party music about drinking and hookups are not intended for your kids and you should talk about what is in these songs with your children, not just let them loose on the internet which is not safe for kids.

Pop music is used in children's media in the US so this makes little sense, things like Kidz Bop, having these artists play or perform at "kid-centric" events, etc. Artists even cater to child-like images, sounds, etc. in some of the same music that is about adult topics.

I was a punk/goth teen in the 80's and it was insane how over the top evangelicals were during that time. I had a friend in high school convert and he burned all of his music because it was considered Satanic by his church. I'm pretty sure it was an Assemblies Of God one.

on the line of people “making fun of christianity” wasp persecution complex is a real thing and it turns criticism of the church into personal attack because they just can’t fathom thst they aren’t the absolute truth. poking fun at other religions has definitely been a thing before in music especially during the iraq war, maybe less so in imagery as in actual content, but that has been explicit dehumanization of people. dancing for a tongue in cheek song in a church is WAY different from just straight up calling an entire population slurs and dehumanizing them while their countries are being invaded by foreign troops.

Same with the "grooming" conspiracy theories that have been floating around long before the word went viral. Someone actually sent me a video of a queer Disney writer (or some such position) "admitting" that she was pushing the "gay agenda" into Disney films when it was pretty obvious that she was talking about her decision to put representation of her own group into the films as someone who would have benefited from that growing up, and used the term "gay agenda" in a clearly joking tone that is easily read as reclaiming a demeaning smear.

i feel like there’s a difference between not being christian or ever being christian and making fun of christianity vs having a history with christianity and religious trauma or distaste with it and then having your work somehow reflect that and your feelings about a religion you were previously apart of. the christian’s who criticize these artists tend to group them all under the first camp even though most of these people have had experiences with christianity. i mean christianity is one of the most common religions, it’s not that hard to imagine that maybe they’ve had encounters with christianity and those happened to be negative. rather than being offended about the representation that people who have had horrible experiences with christianity choose to use i feel it’s more beneficial for these christian’s to do some self evaluation on why them and their religion is viewed that way and what helpful seeds they can start planting to change such imagery

I went to a Christian high school and all the teachers sat us down and told us about the Travis Scott concert and how it was indeed a portal to hell. We were told only to listen to Christian music because it could "get us too. " That was one of the craziest school days I've ever had😂😂

It's sad that the "satanic panic" can target kid-friendly stuff too, like the Blue's Clues reboot having RUclips videos that support LGBT people, modern Disney films being called "woke" for accepting diverse elements, and some kids' anime such as Pokémon due to including magic, ghost and psychic types, and the concept of evolution. I feel bad for the kids that live in far-right households.
I feel like going after child targeted media would be the immediate go to. As those are the years we start retaining mass amounts of information and 9/10 people who hold beliefs like that grew up in a environment surrounded by people and media showcasing the same views.

Duude, this is a big one. I remember all those videos playing songs backwards or pointing out so called „Illuminati“ symbolism in music videos. It was huge during the late 2000s/early 2010s with Gaga, Kesha, Rihanna, Katy etc.
I honestly never even understood what people were claiming the effects of all the „subliminal messaging“ to be. Like, what do you think Lady Gaga doing hand gestures around her eyes is going to do to your child, except maybe make them copy it cause they think it looks cool…
I personally always found violence and weapons in lyrics or visuals way more concerning. But America loves their guns, I guess, so no outrage to be found there.
In general I am for freedom of artistic expression (given no living being is harmed in its creation), but I can also still find things to be tasteless or cheap rage bait.
Also, I do somewhat agree that people get away more easily with using Christian imagery than that of other religions, but to me that’s a good thing in regards to the liberal attitudes of Christians at large, not including the hand full of fundamentalists. Artists should be able to use or even „mock“ religious themes and imagery without having to fear for their safety.

I’m not a Christian, but you misspelled offense. Also the sensationalist media version of certain secret society cults, is to purposefully poison the well and discredit the evidence based conspiracy theories that are out there, and do have a lot of credence to them. It’s a really convoluted topic, but there’s more to these things than what’s presented in this video, and by the media.
I get so tired of the "everything is a demon" people. I grew up in a pentecostal church where I wasn't even allowed to read stuff like Harry Potter because it was witchcraft (looking back, that was a rare church W. Fuck JK Rowling). Everything I enjoyed was labeled as demonic and evil. It made me roll my eyes and just count the days until college so I wouldn't have to go to that church anymore.

As a queer person, I think it’s really important to allow artists to praise or criticize the world’s most popular religion however they want. I’m really sick of people spewing shit for ulterior motives or more commonly about what they don’t understand to seem intelligent or compassionate, I think it’s more dangerous than actual persecution in a way because it complicates the public perception of those issues which helps normalize them. Criticizing Judaism or Islam is completely different because the people from those demographics are constantly “othered” in the US and treated as exotic while Christianity is the standard, comfortable faith. Making fun of Islam is not the same as making fun of Christianity, it’s punching down. Islamophobia in this country has been extremely rampant, especially in the last twenty-three years. 23 YEARS! That’s not okay and the only reason we think so is because we’ve been fed so much propaganda that many people to this day still see Islam as a religion full of extremists. It’s sad, I do have major criticisms for every organized religion but it’s just ridiculous to see people who’ve dedicated their whole lives to chapter two of a book, vilify and dehumanize the people who dedicate their whole lives to chapter three

I vaguely say Christianity because I can't blame a specific denomination or diocese, there are people from all of them who my criticisms apply and don't apply to. I actually don't blame large groups of people for the actions of a few which I thought was clear since a major point of my comment was condemning other people for doing exactly that. And I never said “Christians” I used the term “people” because there are Islamophobes in every major group, even internalized within Muslim communities. The heavy metal they were scared of is some of the corniest music ever recorded.
Yeah but death metal wouldn’t exist for at least another 3-5 years if you use 1985 as a jumping off point and thrash was just getting started in the early-80’s. The biggest bands at the height of the satanic panic (1980-1985 culminating in the famous Dee Snider/Tipper Gore hearing) were Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motörhead, etc so just gotta remember this is what was big at the time haha
It is now because metal has gotten heavier and more diverse. At the time, that was like the heaviest music ever. Now we listen to it and laugh at how decidedly un-heavy it is.

I feel like more people are opening their eyes to how dark/satanic the music industry really is. I can no longer look at music as "just music". I now know music is more powerful than people think. And from a Christian perspective, I encourage everyone to really listen to the lyrics that their favorite artists put out. Trust me, I can say I enjoyed many popular artists growing up like Beyonce, Drake, etc but all these artists are the same. Everyone needs to be careful of what you listen to. Your eyes and ears are gateways.
I'm just saying music and art can be "dark" without being called satanic, you know? Especially with video games made by foreign studios outside of Christian America. A great example is Chilla's Art games, they're horror grounded in mundane and surreal situations - stalking, supernatural curses.
The theme of exploring scary mysteries in the world and in ourselves is fascinating. We could learn so much (and be entertained too) without making it about the devil.

And it’s not even that deep. You just have to ask why every single artist that has went mainstream has the same symbolism surrounding them . Whether it’s religious or not.
