This is fantastic, The best footage of Lansbury in MAME that I've seen!!! And there isn't that much outnyjere that I am aware of! Is there any more?
The part Angela Lansbury waited her whole career for.... It was the perfect marriage of show, role and actress all coming together at the perfect time. She was spectacular.
One of the greatest pieces of casting ever. Impossible to imagine this show having happened with anyone else. And one of the top performances in musical theatre history.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Agree with you 100%, but I'm sure you've heard the stories of how difficult it was to get the higher-ups to approve her casting. Thanks to Jerry Herman for advocating for her!
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 So many performers have tried over the years. I can't even begin to name them, but, most recently, Christine Ebersole and Christine Baranski. I thought Glenn Close would have been good years ago. What's lacking in most is...class. A quality of which Lansbury had no shortage!
🙌🏽Rest in peace the one and only MAME
This was a fabulous part of the show. Loved the dancing. I don't think I could sit still to watch this I would have been on the stage with them. Angela's performance here was unforgettable. Way to go Anfela
Miss Ms. Arthur here but, wow, wow, wow, fellas!- That’s How Young I Feel number is heaven to watch! Thx.
and she did it 8 times a week , legend !
The video is blurry, but anybody who saw Angela Lansbury in Mame saw a great performance that they will never forget. I saw Mame on tour in 1979, when Anges Gooch's telegram came from "someplace called Plains, Georgia, and the Broadway revival in 1983, when this video was made. In addition to Anne Francine, the show also featured the great Jane Connell!
I was fortunate to see an original production when I was a mere pup (around 12 y/o) I was enchanted by her and the show then and still am decades later. If there is other footage I can view I'd love to know.
Who is Anne Francine?
There'll never be another like her.
Holy Smokes! That was awesome.
10 stars plus more
It's a shame the set did not live up to the Great talent displayed here.
No matter, exuberant music theatre performed by pros. Miss Lansbury has magic gift of making
songs believable. The talent to make it look effortless.
Magnificent glimpse into real Broadway talent of a by gone day. Shows like these are no longer written. Thank God my parents took me to see original casts from the 60s onward when I lived in NY.
Couldn't agree more, and glad you enjoyed this.
Angela has such energy! 95 yrs old and still going string! Here’s to ya Angie!
I am looking for any video of Bea and Angela performing this song for a long time
Thank you for uploading the video of their actual performance
Sorry, that's not Beatrice Arthur. It's Anne Francine who played Vera after Beatrice Arthur.
There’s also one from the Tonys under the busome buddy
Well, what memories this tape brings back.
I was in it.
I didn’t know Patrick Murphy passed away. He’s playing Junior Babcock who dances inappropriately with Angela before the number proper begins.
The stabilizer did wonders for this tape.
Sadly live pirate video is all that survives.
The irony is, we did two professional videos of the whole show while we were still in Philadelphia.
Our “producer”, Mitch Leigh, suppressed the videos, which were shot with multi cameras and in stereo … from overture through curtain call!
Lost forever in a snit against Angela!
How amazing and awful that those Mitch Leigh videos have never emerged. He could have at least donated them to the Theatre on Film and Tape collection, which did not to my knowledge preserve this revival.
Fantastic. Broadway just...isn't this anymore. Amazing.
Couldn't agree more.
Saw mame at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles in the 60s and it was amazing
I remember seeing this revival with a bunch of musical theatre fan pals in the balcony of the Uris Theatre summer 1983. Yes, it was a low budget production and it flopped, but It didn’t matter. Just seeing Angela Lansbury recreate her legendary role was thrilling enough. She was in great form too. Anne Francine was a terrific Vera as well. I knew a boy in the chorus named Patrick Murphy, who only a couple years later was dead from AIDS. Lost like so many talented young men cut down in their primes in the 80s- early 90s. Still very painful to recall. I feel lucky having seen her in this role, standing center stage singing IF HE WALKED INTO MY LIFE. Wow. A great theatre memory indeed.
Thanks for explaining...people on here saying it's Bea the original Vera. I really didn't think it was her and you solved that however IF you ever see this please explain? There was a revival in '83, not that many years after the original in the late 60s? P.S. Sorry about your friend. RIP TO HIM ALWAYS.
The original production of MAME opened in 1966. This was a very short lived 1983 revival with the original MAME herself, Angela Lansbury. I think it ran 3 weeks. It got so-so reviews, was sort of low budget and opened in the middle of July. Not good. Even still, it was thrilling to see Lansbury in her signature stage role. She was fantastic.
once again and I will keep saying it 'THANK YOU" !!!
It's always very welcome.
God BLESS YOU!!!!! - Thank you
Once again you have made my day Spiderwoman!!! Bless you for this one!!!
Two wonderful ladies. Both were fabulous. She will always be my name and Bea wil always be my Dorothy. Angela was priceless here. Love the song Bosom buddies. Super video.
What is wrong with you? You can edit and take off name and put in MAME, as it should be.
All Broadway and West End Shows should be taped for the sake of posperity! They don't have to show them to the public for X number of years, or sell them as soon as the show closes. As Dame Angla said herself the only true image the public will have of her theatrical work is "Sweeny Todd." It is just ridiculous such shows and performances are lost to history!
Actually, they are taped for posterity but you have to be a genuine theater professional to see them. They are kept at the Lincoln Center Library and are used for research.
It is great to see such a high quality video of this great revival. I don't know what was wrong with the critics. Had the show received the reviews it deserved, it would have stayed on Broadway for at least a year. THANK YOU!
I agree, and thanks for calling this "high quality."
An we would never have seen "Murder She Wrote," certainly not with Dame Angela.
@@bostonblackie9503 It is very possible. No hay mal que por bien no venga.
So the original got rave reviews but this a revival did not?
My life is complete thank you so very much! Francine did a great job!
I love this! Thanks so much for posting it. That's how young I feel is one of my favourite songs
Thank You for sharing this!!!!!! I love Lansbury!!!! The acuity is phenomenal !!!!!!!!!
So glad you liked it. I had to check the definition of "acuity" but it was worth it.
Thank you for posting this! What a performer she was/is - truly one of the greats. I'm just sad I never got to see her performing on stage in her prime! And it's hard to believe she was 58 here, she performs with the energy of someone half her age. Fantastic.
I think the same. She is an extraordinary person.
All the work of Angela is awsome and extraordinary actress.
What a beautiful job you did on this video! Thanks so much for uploading it.
I really appreciate that, as one can only do so much with an early '80s video.
The show/vocals were written for her.
Thank you for this beautiful gift! El video tiene muy buena calidad.
So glad you like it.
This is from the short-lived revival, not the original production. Unfortunately, it had a very short run and did not tour.
Yes, that's why it says "Mame '83." Recently posted on this channel is footage from the original production of "Mame."
Best amateur version I've seen thus far. Shame this couldn't have been filmed like Sweeney or better still Lansbury cast in the movie version
oh the joy to have had Dame Lansbury on film in Mame to watch over and over again. She was cheated and so were we.
Omfg my queen stg laundury and lupone are tge best thank you
If any of you have a time machine please contact me.
Glorious
Thank you. I am one of you.
I've tried to imagine what casting I'd like to try to make Jerry Herman happy for another movie. Know what I'd like to see?
Annie Lennox as Mame.
And MADONNA as Vera.
And give me Jane Horrocks as. Agnes Gooch.
Bless your soul Lucille Ball, but you murdered that expensive movie.
(I loved Robert Preston's movie song, "Loving You", though)
@@this_Joe_Smith Interesting casting choices, but I can''t see Madonna being convincing as a 'great actress'. How about Helena Bonham Carter?
@@kennethwayne6857 . . . hmmm . . .not sure about HBC . . . and i think i have to agree, no current day Madonna. Somebody deadpan funny . . . current day Elaine Page ?
@@this_Joe_Smith Elaine Paige sounds just great.
This, I believe is the revival, that closed out of town. If it hadn't we wouldn't have "Murder She Wrote."
It didn't close out of town--in came in to Broadway prematurely, and did not last long.
Is there a full recording of this revival with this quality?
thanks spiderwpman!
Did they use microphones back then or did they have to project?
They were miked.
Just a question - does your copy also switch to another performance midway through "It's Today", filmed from the opposite side of the balcony? And then does it pick up again from the SL side before the reprise?
Hi '71---The '83 "Mame" videos I have are "as is," without editing, although they could be combined as desired, perhaps integrating the pro-shot clips done for TV reviews, etc. The "Mame" videos are: July 24 matinee, complete show, shot by the "pioneer" videographer who had been active since 1980. Then two others done by another videographer: Aug. 17 Act One only and Aug. 23 complete. The clips in this RUclips video are from 8/23, but treated with devices that used to be available on RUclips.
Thank you for the information! Uh, that gets a little confusing then, because in a copy I recently received of the 23/08 tape "It's Today" is spliced in from a separate tape, shot from the SR balcony - could it maybe be a portion of the 17/08 tape?
The 7/24 "It's Today" is the best of the three. So if anything I would expect the 7/24 "It's Today" to be spliced into 8/23, replacing the 8/23 "It's Today."
That's odd, because both the 24/07 and the 23/08 tapes are from the left, whereas the clip that's spliced into the 23/08 copy I have is from the right - maybe you could illustrate the 17/08 one for us? To clear up the mystery, of course ;)
I am the only one noticing that Bea Arthur had some HUMONGOUS feet.
But Bea Arthur wasn't in this revival--Anne Francine played Vera, the role created in '66 by Bea.
aurora spiderwoman oh wow. Thanks!
dud audience
Eh. I don’t like that set. Great performances though.
God I hate this show. A glorified drag show.
I'm with you!!! It's horrible!
Then no need to watch the video and leave negative comments on it.
