If I could go back in time I’d be young-but-an-adult with a ticket to opening night of this show!

Wonderful find. I adore Angela Lansbury especially as Mame.

Genuinely shocked by how young and high pitched Angela's speaking voice sounded in that interview, yet you can still tell it's her. Marvellous bit of audio

Just imagine being there that night!!! All that energy and excitement. This was back during a time when people actually dressed to go to the theater, many men in dinner jackets on opening night and some even in tailcoats. During regular performances if not dinner jackets then definitely suits. And many times, movie stars from Hollywood would attend these performances as well as many other famous people in different professions. And newspapers still carried a critique of the performance. This was wonderful to listen to; its just too bad that there was no video to go with it.

Angela is so wonderful! Unfortunately, I never saw her in "Mame," but I loved seeing her in "Blithe Spirit" and "A Little Night Music."

I've listened to this before but every time I do it just makes me so happy. Makes me smile. One day, I hope to have an opening night like this. I'm sort of a closet singer myself, only a few people know I can. I can dance pretty well too, I believe. So, I can relate to this deeply and I really hope that one day it'll happen for me. Thank you for always posting wonderful videos!

Ms Lansbury did a revival but it flooped out of town. If it hadn't we wouldn't have 'Murder She, Wrote.' A fabulous little gem!

@bostonblackie9503: Angela Lansbury should have done a filmed version as she did with SWEENY TODD. She still could have still MURDER SHE WROTE. Instead we have tantalizing bits and pieces of Angela Lansbury of what have been. Instead we have that f**king piece of wasted film with Lucy Ricardo and may the film’s producers be forced to watch the film endlessly in hell.

I saw the revival in Philly. Not good, but it did make it into New York.

Phenomenal!! Thank you for sharing! I’m studying Mame this months with my musical theatre students and I so wish there was more footage of Angela Landsbury in the part. But these pictures are marvelous!!

Thank you for the lovely comment. Have you seen all the other video clips of Mame on my channel?

@hollydransfield1653: All you have to is watch the film with Lucy Ricardo and study what she does AND DO THE OPPOSITE: Sing in tune, interpret the lyrics, be age correct (not blurry), dance and do better line readings. It’s that simple!

I just found a sealed LP of the original cast recording at the thrift for $1.00 and played it on my restored 1961 Pilot console stereo. What a wonderful blast from the past!

You saved the best (and probably the rarest) for last! I don't know how you find and obtain this "lost" material but I'm glad u do! This one was unusual. So much fun to hear the "after party" and especially someone singing the songs in the background. And if I'm not mistaken, one of the pics was Frank Sinatra saying hello or congratulating her. Fantastic! Thanks again. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 🎭🎭🎭 ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for the lovely comment! This actually came from an LP I found a couple of years ago. And you're right, it's such fun to hear the immediate aftermath of such a landmark show's birth. (The photo I believe you mean of Sinatra is in fact June Styne, though they do look similar!)

What a true gem recording that I never knew even existed - thank you for posting it. Angela Lansbury in Mame was the very first Broadway show I ever saw. The location of this party is actually Sardi's not the Rainbow Room. Thanks for sharing a wonderful piece of Broadway history.

My late brother, Adam and I, along with two sisters who were friends of the family, got to see Angela, Bea and the great ensemble cast at the Winter Garden sometime in the late summer of 1966. My brother was in the Holy Ghost Seminary in Norwalk, CT and I was hired to assist him doing maintenance and repair before returning to Duquesne U. back home in the Pittsburgh area. The trip to see a Broadway show was reward for long days of hard work during an exceptionally hot summer. Will always remember the "Bosum Buddies" duet of Angela (Mame) and Bea (Vera): Vera asks Mame: "So, how old do you think I am?" Mame replies: "Oh, somewhere between 40 and DEATH!" Well, Angela delayed THAT outcome for many, many wonderful years. Thank you, sweet lady, for all the joy and talent you brought to stage and screen. Your voice remains in the ether, forever.
