I was the Wardrobe Supervisor of this production and absolutely loved the show. The producers never gave the show the proper publicity to give it a chance to survive. Angela was devastated. She had worked so hard to get into tiptop shape for the revival and looks fantastic! She broke down while singing "My Best Girl" on closing night. It broke my heart....
I saw this production three times and even though it had a bus and truck production feel. Ms. Lansbury was breathtaking. The excitement during the title song was incredible. She is a gem.
The title song of Mame is always sung / played for tributes to Angela, and while, obviously, Angela's name doesn't rhyme with the lyrics, the lyrics work pretty well for talking about her. Someone even made reference to that in an article about her recent Tony Lifetime Achievement Award ("You came you saw you conquered...we think you're just sensational" pretty much sums up her career.)
I'll admit to having never before seen Angela Lansbury performing Mame. For me, Lucille Ball's movie version will always be my favorite (I know, sacrilege for the Lansbury-set). But I can see the appeal and this was a great performance. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see it.
Thank you for this! You don't know what it truly means to me to see this. My late Father took me to see this show when I was a child and I remember it as though it were yesterday. What a wonderful walk down memory lane you gave me. So many thanks!
@rootbeeronbroadway It's a really difficult task to find an actress play Mame! Last time I heard, Jerry Herman was thinking of Christine Andreas as Mame but that did not materialize... yet!
@pfessas OMIGOD. Andreas singing If He Walked Into My Life is heaven. She needs a role worthy of her talent. What a gorgeous woman with a voice to match. Actually Christine Ebersole is a better choice.

They just don't make shows like this anymore. Thank you so much for posting this rare gem. We can all learn something from it.

@5:07 I got goose bumps...
Is the showtime version that the DL sisters were talking about?
this is such a good song! but I would hate to be a soprano in this show

@Geostrum2 Both women are totally wrong for Mame and Vera..
@pfessas The one woman who I think could pull it off would be Patti Lupone
