On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-21-19.
We’re looking at a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss Prototype in Pastel Gray Paint. The car has a 428 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is John Grafel. John’s had this car since 1975. John shares he knew this car was special, however after 5 years of research with Ford Motor Company records Department, they found records that this car was Ford Employee Larry Shinoda’s personal prototype car he drove on the “Boss 302 Project” so this was the 1st Boss Mustang.
To see details on the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, go to www.MCACN.com
ENJOY! Авто/Мото
You and the owner left out two important details that i noticed; number one: it’s probably the only Boss 302 built with an automatic transmission,(probably because it’s got a big block 428 in it) and number two: it’s probably the only 1969 Boss 302 built with a shaker hood scoop,(those didn’t become an option on the Boss 302 until the 1970 model year)!

Unbelievable Lou, what a find!
Happy to read you appreciate this find :-)
I'm a true Ford man and that is one cool Mustang!!
Nice !
I've seen articles and photos of this car before it was restored. Was it confirmed authentic by Larry while he was still alive? I thought I saw a letter once, to that effect. Thanks for another great review, Lou! 👍
My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome 1969.
Hi Lou! A unique prototype! Interesting car!
Hi Joseph! A rare prototype treat :-) Lou
I remember reading an article about this car when it was still in a barn, waiting to be restored. It has a fantastic history and I'm so glad to see it is restored! 2 thumbs up Lou.
Hi coolcass1, Pretty excited to have this car on the Channel to share with you :-) Lou
Great piece of Ford Boss Mustang history.... 🏁
Hi Uri Deamabal, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Special one to share on the Channel for sure, Lou
Spectacular that is one Bad A$$ Boss And I mean #1 It threw me off thinking all Boss cars were 302 and 4 speeds Thanks to John for preserving history!!!..and Lou for sharing this incredible piece of car history!!!..428 cobra jet auto. AM FM back then was a big deal too!!..p.s John has the old school creases in his hat like we did in the early 70s..👍😁😎❤it!!!🇺🇸
Hi Joe Smo, Happy to share this rare treat with you, and glad to read you appreciate this car. Thank you for the wonderful comment, and you're welcome, Lou
I think that unique pony wants to RUN :)
Gitty Up !
Don't get bucked off there Lou!!! That pony has an attitude ;)
What a very cool Mustang It's amazing what you learn watching your channel. Thank you.
Hi Michael Jackman, Glad we're both learning from the Care Takers who are kind to share their car with us :-) You're welcome, Lou
I love this. Reminds me of my chrome Hot Wheels "Club Car". Not white but chrome. Stacks of tracks and 2 SuperChargers and cars. The Boss always stayed in the foam envelope I got it in unless I wanted to run it ;).
man, to be a kid again.
"to be a kid again" Stay right here on the Channel with me, we'll have fun like big kids :-)
Wow is right, Lou! What an amazing find for both John & the channel. I've never seen a Boss Mustang I didn't like, but the Boss' Boss is a real treat!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Special one to share on the Channel for sure, Lou
I can only imagine how valuable the specific Mustang truly is. I’m sure Barrett-Jackson or Mecum auctions could bring top dollar for this absolutely 1 of a kind Mustang. Beautiful car Lou! Thank you & John for the preserved beauty!
I wouldn't care how much money I could pull in for this some cars you just don't sale and this is one of them.
Hi Rusty, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Special one to share on the Channel for sure. You're welcome, Lou
Since I have owned 7 Mustangs and absolutely love the car, this has been a real treat! Thanks Lou!
Hi Bob Bob, Happy to read you enjoy this "real treat!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Another BOSS Mustang we can't hear run . I think I liked the black 429 a while back a bit better but , this ones history is cool . I'm surprized it survived . Thanks for posting .
Hi Bud Lee, Yes, I would have heard this one too, however, the story is too cool to not share with you :-) Regarding this posting, you're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile Agreed
This guy has a beautiful cat. Nothing looks as good as a Boss 302
Hi Steve Jo, High praise for this car :-) Lou
My understanding was Larry widened the Boss series by three inches over the stock Mustang.
Hi u2mister1, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge :-) Hope you Subscribe and see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Nice Car Lou! It's odd Ford would not fully equip it with power windows and a tach though.
Hi Max, Certainly interesting how Ford set up this "test" car. Lou
Wish there had been a 70 BOSS 351, at least a prototype, or GT350 with boss351 engine! Can you tell I like 351C ?!
That is a good idea.
Only sad thing about it is that he don't drive it... I know it's a one of kind "Boss/Mach1 428" actually owned by Larry Shinoda.... But dang... I'd at least drive it in nice weather and not in rush hour traffic. it's already got 75k miles on it.. Proves that LB drove it and it was meant to be driven.. Plus factory A/C! Oh well, guess will wait to see it on one of the big auto auction shows and go for a mill or so... :)
Hi MitchF150, Oh I get the feeling when this one gets running, it will see some time on the road :-) Lou
Hi Lou,
All one can say that is history staring you in the face & maybe give you a smack or 2 to realise the importance of this Mustang.
I am sure Larry is looking down smiling knowing his beloved Mustang couldn't be in better hand, a true American Gentleman.
Great video in all aspects ☺

I'm a Vette guy that has a soft spot for this Mustang. What a great find Lou. Last big ticket was in my freshly rebuilt GT. A long time ago. Mustang= fun.
Hi Eagle Whitefeather01
, Happy to share this Mustang treat with you :-) Lou
Most excellent. A Unicorn.
Real treat to share this one with you :-)
I love this car Lou. My favorite year and color. I would cry with joy if that car was parked in my garage.
Hi Chas, Happy to read this cars brings such joy :-) Thank you for viewing, and I hope one like this comes to your garage soon, Lou
Wonderful car Lou. When I was in high school a neighbor had a 69 Mustang but it wasn’t a Boss. Have a great weekend.
Hi abe frohman, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the Mustang in your neighborhood :-) Thank you, and wishing you a great weekend too, Lou
The automatic should've been a giveaway it wasn't a boss 302 or 429 motor
Thank you for viewing and sharing what you notice.
Over 70,000 miles and it looks that clean?
Happy to read you appreciate the condition of this car :-)
I have a couple of Mopars... but that Mustang body style to me is pure late 60’s perfection! 😀
Happy to read you appreciate the design of this car :-)
I believe the shaker hood wasn't a factory option on the Boss 302 until 70....
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
That has to be the rarest car ever.
A real treat to share this one with you on the Channel :-)
Boss and mach1 68-69...most beautifull Mustangs imo. Kind regards Lou
Hi Nikodem Dyzma, A wonderful design, I agree, Lou
Wild. I have had and worked on a few 429s but this is a really special car... Thanks Lou !
Hi Rudy, Happy to share this historic Ford with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Way cool! I'm guessing she is a R code car from the factory and not a G code car. Correct?
Hi David Springer, Happy to read "Way cool!" :-) Not sure of the code, Lou
Awesome car. Great story
Hi Big Charlie's Model Garage, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Lou
That's one incredible and beautiful Mustang. Thanks for sharing.
Hi William Matthews, Happy to read you appreciate this Mustang :-) You're welcome, Lou
Pretty neat you were able to locate the prototype for the Boss 302!! Your eye for great Rare Muscle never disappoints!
Thank you Thomas for the kind words :-)
Wow! Great find!!!!
Thank you Jame Moore :-) Happy to read you appreciate this find to share with you, Lou
@@loucostabile I read when Henry canned Knudson Shanoda left for whatever reason . I always thought his Mustang designs were the best and still are.
Thanks for doing the segment.
Another one of a kind thanks for showing this I wish I could heard it run
Hi larry, Yes I would have liked to hear it run too, however a wonderful car to share :-) You're welcome, Lou
I just love this body style
Agreed Tim, a wonderful design :-) Lou
Very cool Mustang. Thanks for sharing Lou.
Hi fordsrule35, This car is quite the treat to share with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile 👍🏻
Nice find. Just 2 things about the car that are annoying. First the steering wheel isnt centered. 2nd the rear wing is angled to produce lift instead of downforce, a mistake I see many 69-70 Mustang owners make.
Hi Clara Engl, Happy to read you appreciate this car, and thank you for sharing the details you see, Lou
Always loved the boss and mach 1 mustang's. Another great video Lou love watching your channel.
Hi PlymouthDuster 225, This one is a real treat to share with you :-) Thank you for the kind encouraging words for this Channel, Lou
Boss Stang, and loving it! Fire the Beach Boys. We need "Mustang Sally" rippin' over the speakers in the background. Well - we can't have that cause the copyright stuff, but still - we can always imagine it into the scene. I'm in love with this machine.
No music....RUclips copy write Agents listening :-) This one is a real treat to share with you ImTheDaveman.
as a youth, these style mustangs were everyplace. one thing i remember distinctly is: "mach 1" sticker sets along the side of these monsters. i was always under the impression that "mach 1s" had 351 or cobra jet, rather than 302s, which were available in mavericks. this being the US, four speeds were few and far between.
Hi Scott Brady, Thank you for viewing and sharing your memories of the Mustangs :-) Lou
Great Job Lou in sharing a very special car with significant history !!!
Thanks Jeff, Happy to share a special car like this with you :-) Lou
Great car Lou, and thanks for sharing. :-)
Hi Ed B., Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Special one to share on the Channel for sure, Lou
Shame he didn't bring the documenting paperwork. Great car no matter.
When I'm at someone garage, many times we can get the documentation, however when at a car show....sometimes, but not this time :-)
1969 year's end, Shinoda was gone from Ford along with Knudsen.

I HAD A 1970 YELLOW BOSS 302 (BOUGHT IN 1975 IN HAWAII).............
I NOTICED.....
AT 6:22 I SAW (2) DOOR JAM BUTTONS.....WHY...ANYBODY...??
AND THE STARTER SOLENOID ON INNER FENDER-WALL IS FROM A NEWER FORD..???

Nice Job Lou, I love your channel!!!
Thank you Joe for the encouragement, and glad you're along for the ride :-) Lou
His license plate says "Shinoda". Funny thing, mine says "Shinola". Yeppers. Anytime somebody calls me stupid I prove them wrong by pointing to myself first, then my car.
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
@@loucostabile I was hoping that some of the older guys here might recall an old saying, "He don't s#*t from Shinola". So I took a shot at myself, but I don't think anybody got it. I tells ya, it's lonely at the top. ☹️
Lou, Is this the Boss of Bosses?
That title goes to my Wife
It is a shame that the engine does not run. Change the oil and turn that big boy over!
I like hearing them too, however too cool not to share with you :-)
SHINODA license plate a nice touch!
Agreed :-)
Looks like Mr Shinoda had a few special touched added to this...
A few special touches indeed :-)
Surprised SHINODA Put the 428,Instead of Boss 429,But Boss429 May Have Been in Design Phase @ That Time.Rare As It Gets !!
Hi Ed, Right, the 428 makes the car so interesting, Lou
Lou, could the reason for the 428 engine (that was never an option for these”Trans-am” cars) being in this car is that the Ford boys may have not yet created the 302 5litre engine?? Maybe Shinida design it before the engine had been finished....
Hi Brady Dog, Interesting points. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
So this kind of a Boss/ Mach I combination...
Hmmm, I never looked at it that way.
IMO, the 428 was too big for the Mustang...headers are totally impossible on lowered cars like mine...trust me, "grind-to-fit" Stage 8 header bolts aren't fun. I'm running a Tony Oddo, Jr. TOE standard bore 428-SCJ with 12:1 custom Race Tec pistons, Edelbrock heads and intake, Comp Cams solid roller, Erson billet roller rocker shafts, MSD 6AL, Holley 750 4150-HP, black pump and all 8AN from the Fuel Safe cell....drop A-arm mods, Borgeson pressurized steering box conversion, Wilwood 6 pistons, Total Control, Koni double adjustable heavy track shocks = now, HERE'S a "prototype" 1969 Mustang! ruclips.net/video/9MtpHSH5zhk/видео.html

Absolutely stunning. The EPA killed the true muscle car of the old days. Just think that the power these new mustangs are making today, was made way back then. Ive been wondering since the coyote came out, how many years will this horsepower battle go on with the big 3, if they keep going the way they are now, what will be the limit of power they can make until the government will step in and say enough. Today's car are basically rockets compared to the old, and I personally think that there will be some limitations set forth by our government to control these fine tuned machines, I hope that dont happen, but it's not out of the realm of possibilitys. Once every car has electric assisted brakes and steering, the government/police will be able to shut the car down if there is a high speed pursuit in progress, especially if lives are at stake. There are devices already out that will shut your car down, but with vaccum assisted brakes, and power steering, it's illegal to do so due to the fact that your ability to stop and steer is out of your hands. I pray the car industry will keep up the war of horsepower like they did in the 60's, but we all know how that ended. What will be the new "regulation" that we will have to abide by. I could see an age factor come into play with certain horsepower levels, and it maybe hard to implement, but we never know. Some car manufacturers are already reading your eyes, so if you take your eyes off the road it will notify you. Could eyes be the key here? Will the drivers information (name, age, sex, eye retina reading, ect ect...) of the car have to be logged on the vehicles computer diagnostics? Will your car have to take a retina eye reading for your car to even start? Some interesting things here to think about, and well within the realm of possible ways, I mean, some cars won't start unless it reads your BAC (blood alcohol content level), so eye readings could be closer than you think. Much love everyone, be safe out there.
