On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-21-19.
We’re looking at a 1969 Ford Boss Mustang in Raven Black Paint. The car features the factory 429 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Dave Steine. Dave’s had this car since 2005. Dave possesses a very low mileage car and received the “Authenticity Award by The Mustang Club of America” because of this cars originality.

Great car Lou. I have only seen one Boss 429 Mustang in person myself. A Candy Apple Red 1969 model. Those Boss 429 motors are huge.

It is wonderful car to look at and admire what it was built for. The car did easy 13- 14 sec quarter mile times and with some simple tuning could get into the 12 sec range. This was Ford's answer to the HEMI and it put out more than the advertised 375 horse power. Produced only in 69 and 70 and not installed in any other body style.

I'd like to respond to a few comments made. First thing, this is a restored Boss 429. Therefore some bare metal parts like the original exhaust system after 40 years gets surface rust and minor pitting. The original exhaust was replaced with genuine Ford exhaust dated 1-69 , the same date code as the original system. Dave has photos of NOS system next to the original exhaust the car was born with highlighting the date codes and engineering numbers. The original trunk mount battery had expired and was missing when Dave got the car. A NOS Date code correct Autolite group 29 battery and BB28 vent caps were installed. All original parts, upgraded by NOS assembly line parts were saved and tagged. The value of the NOS exhaust system today would exceed the cost of 5 new Boss 429's in 1969 if you could even find one at any price? Maybe that is a contributing factor why many choose to not start or drive their cars when restored to this level. Maybe a owner not having the original date coded exhaust on their car is why some will cry about not starting a car at a static car show? The Mustang club of America, SAAC and MCACN do not require the vehicle to start for their top concours classes. Don't feel too sorry for the owners who miss out on the thrill of driving their Trailer Queen , more often than not they have a cool driver in the garage too.

Not sure why a car with only 7000 miles needed a bunch of NOS Perkins parts. Shoulda kept the originals.
Well when it's your car you find parts when you can to make it the best car it can be :-)

Lou thanks for sharing this beautiful Boss 429. Wonderful to see exactly how the car would have been delivered and absolutely authentic for those of us who are into that sort of stuff. I would love to examine in detail the specifics of that car especially considering what Ford had to do to install those monster engines in a Mustang. I was also surprised you didn't go into more detail about the best trunk treasures which is the Boss 9 cars having that very specific trunk mounted battery. In any regard great video of a great car. If you ever shoot that car again maybe consider some of the fine details of these cars for those of us who never get to see one in person. Thanks again and as always, looking forward to seeing more great cars and videos.

I had a 69 mach 1 with 428cj. All black with the shaker hood. Loved it. Put 103,000 on it then sold it for like 1500. Bought New in 69. Wish I still had it.

I'v seen many boss 429 mustangs. This is the only one I could not hear it run. It's like looking at a picture. I'm not interested in picture cars.

Wow what a Boss! I'm not usually one to like the videos where we can't hear them fire, but I certainly understand this one.
I found it interesting that the ignition key hole is in the dash. I thought we were into the locks on the column by then. Perhaps an early model '69? Very cool and I love the memorabilia in the trunk!

A beautiful ride Lou! You've outdone yourself again, love your channel! So sad to see a beast like that never roars to life. I could've understood the owners stance if the car had between 0-500 miles on it but this one is pushing 7,000 so its seen some usage...still super low on miles but no oil, engine never turns over is just rotting the car out. Owner is making a HUGE mistake not driving her. A beast like this begs to be driven. My Challenger is a fair weather, summer time only car & put into indoor storage for the winter but she sees some much needed action during the summer months. Why own such a nice car & never drive it? Total waste in my opinion. And I've said it before & I'll say it another thousand times I LOVE YOUR VIPER :-) God! She is one for the ages blue with white stripes...DREAM car. Too bad it's not driven.. He has A TON of restraint not to launch it down a 1/4 mile just once...
It was misunderstood by the 375 HP when a Corvette had over 400 hp at the same price. The carbs CFM was lower than the BOSS 302 which was FORD's plan to tone down the HP on paper but be scalable to use headers and a bigger carb for racing .
Some of those BOSS 9's sat on the lot because the Window sticker chased buyer away that bought the MACH I 351 or the 390 that was still an upgrade.
I remember when the 1970 came out and I wished the 1969 had the 1970 rear lights since the 4 headlights really stood out . The colors I liked on that BOSS was Black Jade, raven black and Candy apple red .
The high sticker price back then means rarity and big prices today...

True, the HEMI Cuda Convertible in 1971 wasn't cheap . The base Barracuda was $2700 while the Convertible added $400 and then the upgrade to a Cuda Package was another $300+ .
Then add the HEMI package for about $800 and maybe Option it up from there .
The insurance was high a well .
But now one of them sold for over $3 million.

For the fuel usage i have memories to old Rolls Royce paperwork. They just used similar phrases - phrases in their own terminology.
And sometimes silly like this; 'You need Avon tires to drive your new Corniche' etc.
Back to the Boss: when he never drives it, the engine corrode on the inside,
and the body too. Or it locks up. Moisture is the enemy of any metal.

I'm sorry lou I didn't quite follow the car has 7000 miles obviously it's been run despite the fact that it still has all the original stickers on it but because it's a show car has no coolant oil or gasoline in it and therefore the guy doesn't run the motor?

Hi Lou, on the face of it some people have more money than sense, the car is an amazing reference point for other restorers as it has been done to the highest standards, but let's be clear it had an 18 month restoration on a 7000 mile car that one assumes sat unused somewhere for probably 35 years, perhaps due to illness or death or simple old fashioned eccentricity, BUT it had been driven. To be correctly survivor restored it should have been restored to 7000 mile condition not to the day it rolled off the production line. As they were surely delivered new to the dealer from the factory with oils, coolant etc in them, then leaving the fluids out in my opinion is NOT correct, perhaps he should take the air out of the tyres lol 🙄🙄. Perhaps he has another 429 which gets driven, in which case by all means keep the car as a museum piece but to me it's a great tragedy that a car built by Ford to move under it's own power won't occasionally get fired up even if it only moves a few hundred feet under it's own power a couple of times a year. Nevertheless the Boss 429 is certainly amongst my favourite Mustangs and it was a pleasure to see the car, thanks Lou and thanks to the owner for allowing you to feature the car 👍
