As a kid during 80s in Government schools in India, I can tell you that we were never taught to shy away from our history. By the time I was in 10th grade, I had read, as part of our curriculum, about dynasties, invaders and emperors such as Mauryas, Shungas, Shakas, Guptas, Bin Qasim, Mahmood of Ghazni, Ghori, Aibak, Iltutmish, Balban, Razia Sultana, Khiljis, Tugluqs, Lodhis and of course Mughals, not to mention Nizams of Hyderabad, Nawabs of Awadh and Bengal and Tipu Sultan of Mysore. I think any debate over which dynasty, kings or emperor, heralded a golden era, must also include Asoka the great, Chandragupta II Vikramaditya, Samudragupta (Napoleon of India) and Kanishka (Only Guptas can be said to be Hindus, by the way). I also thought the remark that India had abandoned the Mughals, was a bit flippant. I mean, how does one erase Lal Qila, when the Prime Minister of India, addresses the nation from its rampart? How does one make kids forget about Mughals or Delhi Sultanate, when those mausoleums and monuments are right there in front of them? All these symbols of our history are preserved, maintained and cherished. I have read and watched travelogues about Jehangir’s tomb in Lahore and I have absolutely no doubt that the monuments such as those of Humayun and Akbar are far better maintained as our heritage than that of Jehangir. And, I am not even mentioning the Taj Mahal here. Even Aurangzeb’s Bibi ka Maqbara is maintained as an integral part of our heritage. In fact, the emblems of the Government of India have their origins in Buddhism (Sarnath’s Lion Capital). The Ashoka Chakra is emblazoned on our flag. In contrast, how many of the kids in Pakistan have even heard of Kanishka? Because despite some political noises here and there, India doesn’t have to find its identity in religion. I guess Pakistan needs to highlight those sporadic incidents and political moves in India because they justify the murder of its history and in a way its existence itself.
You forgot the Cholas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Pandyas, and many, many others. Tipu and his father ruled for 50 years. The Wodeyars, who preceded and succeeded them ruled for 500. And so on, and on and on.
The richness of an empire and its prosperity are not all about the monuments. The Islamic rulers and Mughals were good only for monuments. They didn't focus on knowledge creation like the previous rulers of the subcontinent. That's why the Indian subcontinent never had its own Renaissance like Europe.

The reasons for Mughals downfall is due to religious intolerance, especially of Aurangzeb coupled with weak successors and drainage of Wealth. Ms. Fouzia has conveniently avoided mentioning the Prosecution of Hindus and Sikhs, forced conversions, destruction of temples etc by Aurangzeb. Effectively Mughals rule ended by 1700 ( 1700 to 1875 is ineffective ) out of about 175 years of Mughal rule , only 49 years of Akbar is considered reasonable and the last 49 years of Aurangzeb is horrible.
Where’s the evidence for the “persecutions” and forced conversions. He destroyed temples that rebelled against him. In Indian History Hindus were sacking each others temples to begin with. Marathas were especially known for this. Aurangzeb only destroyed Specific Hindu temples that was a threat to him. This is typical warfare. He even attacked other Muslim states in India for rebelling. Not because they follow a different religion. As a matter of fact 70% of Aurangzebs generals were Hindu. He was more tolerant than all of his predecessors. You conflate religious intolerance with typical conquest. Try to not look at history from a biased lens.

Religion is not defining factor in administration & governance. 3. Aurangzeb era: 1657-1707: Religion becomes the defining factor in administration & governance. Akbar's policy of reconciliation is dumped. Jaziya is imposed to fund expansion of the empire. Empire expands but at the cost of political, administrative and military stability. 4. Post Auragnzeb Mughals try to go back to Akbar's policy of reconciliation but locals(Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats, Marathas, Ahoms, Awadh, Hyderabad etc) become independent of Delhi. 5. Marathas conquest of India begins post 1707 where the Marathas collect taxes and rule in the name of Mughals whose authority is restricted to Delhi. 6. 3rd battle of Panipat is fought by Marathas to defend the Mughal throne. 7. EIC wins India not from Mughals but from Marathas when they win Delhi in 1804 and depose the Peshwa in 1818.

This was a beautiful podcast. I, as an Indian from an era of better liberal politics, have been introduced to Mughal history which the current Hindutva regime is trying to blackout. Hence I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Fouzia's insights into the Mughal Empire which, for me, presents a new perspective on the characters of that era.
In 8th century subcontinent, the concept of India as a national entity did not exist. Subcontinent consisted of several small kingdoms; mostly antagonistic towards each other. Every prince wanted to enlarge his kingdom and degrade the neighbouring prince. Invasion of Mahmood of ghazni should be understood in this manner.

As a kid during 80s in Government schools in India, I can tell you that we were never taught to shy away from our history. By the time I was in 10th grade, I had read, as part of our curriculum, about dynasties, invaders and emperors such as Mauryas, Shungas, Shakas, Guptas, Bin Qasim, Mahmood of Ghazni, Ghori, Aibak, Iltutmish, Balban, Razia Sultana, Khiljis, Tugluqs, Lodhis and of course Mughals, not to mention Nizams of Hyderabad, Nawabs of Awadh and Bengal and Tipu Sultan of Mysore. I think any debate over which dynasty, kings or emperor, heralded a golden era, must also include Asoka the great, Chandragupta II Vikramaditya, Samudragupta (Napoleon of India) and Kanishka (Only Guptas can be said to be Hindus, by the way). I also thought the remark that India had abandoned the Mughals, was a bit flippant. I mean, how does one erase Lal Qila, when the Prime Minister of India, addresses the nation from its rampart? How does one make kids forget about Mughals or Delhi Sultanate, when those mausoleums and monuments are right there in front of them? All these symbols of our history are preserved, maintained and cherished. I have read and watched travelogues about Jehangir’s tomb in Lahore and I have absolutely no doubt that the monuments such as those of Humayun and Akbar are far better maintained as our heritage than that of Jehangir. And, I am not even mentioning the Taj Mahal here. Even Aurangzeb’s Bibi ka Maqbara is maintained as an integral part of our heritage. In fact, the emblems of the Government of India have their origins in Buddhism (Sarnath’s Lion Capital). The Ashoka Chakra is emblazoned on our flag. In contrast, how many of the kids in Pakistan have even heard of Kanishka? Because despite some political noises here and there, India doesn’t have to find its identity in religion. I guess Pakistan needs to highlight those sporadic incidents and political moves in India because they justify the murder of its history and in a way its existence itself.
You forgot the Cholas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Pandyas, and many, many others. Tipu and his father ruled for 50 years. The Wodeyars, who preceded and succeeded them ruled for 500. And so on, and on and on.
The richness of an empire and its prosperity are not all about the monuments. The Islamic rulers and Mughals were good only for monuments. They didn't focus on knowledge creation like the previous rulers of the subcontinent. That's why the Indian subcontinent never had its own Renaissance like Europe.

Marathas and to a lesser degree Ahoms are still somewhat mentioned. Also, in case of Marathas they had a relatively short pan-Indian impact, from 1720 to 1818 (the previous impact from ~1650-1720 being largely regional)

The reasons for Mughals downfall is due to religious intolerance, especially of Aurangzeb coupled with weak successors and drainage of Wealth. Ms. Fouzia has conveniently avoided mentioning the Prosecution of Hindus and Sikhs, forced conversions, destruction of temples etc by Aurangzeb. Effectively Mughals rule ended by 1700 ( 1700 to 1875 is ineffective ) out of about 175 years of Mughal rule , only 49 years of Akbar is considered reasonable and the last 49 years of Aurangzeb is horrible.
Where’s the evidence for the “persecutions” and forced conversions. He destroyed temples that rebelled against him. In Indian History Hindus were sacking each others temples to begin with. Marathas were especially known for this. Aurangzeb only destroyed Specific Hindu temples that was a threat to him. This is typical warfare. He even attacked other Muslim states in India for rebelling. Not because they follow a different religion. As a matter of fact 70% of Aurangzebs generals were Hindu. He was more tolerant than all of his predecessors. You conflate religious intolerance with typical conquest. Try to not look at history from a biased lens.

Bharat had been invaded by various foreigners - Mughals with Uzbek ancestry, the French, Dutch, Portuguese, and the British. Unlike all other Invaders, the Mughals integrated themselves into the country and became truly native. So, in that sense the Mughals were Bharatiya. Regarding the question why there is Hindu Muslim conflict in the Subcontinent, Pakistan has monetized it from its founding to (1) justify its creation, and (2) develop national identity. Modi and BJP have taken a leaf from Pakistan to monetize the Hindu Muslim conflict for political gains.
While in grad school as a foreign student, this writer had several friends from Pakistan with whom we used to cook desi khana. We shared the common trait of being penniless. 😊

At that time from 1700 to 1850 virtually balance of trade was in favour of India. It was beneficial to us before take over of East India Company by Crown. After take over situation changed vice versa.
Mughal empire or Timurid empire had the following phases:
1. Babur & Humayun: 1528-1556: Continuation of Delhi Sultunate by other names. Good at winning war but failing to govern hence overthrown by locals like previous regimes.
2. Akbar, Jehangir & Shahjahan: 1556-1657: Governance based on Akbar's policy of Sulh-e-Qul(Universal Peace). Respect is given to local faiths i.e. Hindus and Hindu elite is incorporated in the ruling class via mansabdari system. Jaziya is removed and temples are liberated & rebuilt. Religion is not defining factor in administration & governance.
3. Aurangzeb era: 1657-1707: Religion becomes the defining factor in administration & governance. Akbar's policy of reconciliation is dumped. Jaziya is imposed to fund expansion of the empire. Empire expands but at the cost of political, administrative and military stability.
4. Post Auragnzeb Mughals try to go back to Akbar's policy of reconciliation but locals(Rajputs, Sikhs, Jats, Marathas, Ahoms, Awadh, Hyderabad etc) become independent of Delhi.
5. Marathas conquest of India begins post 1707 where the Marathas collect taxes and rule in the name of Mughals whose authority is restricted to Delhi.
6. 3rd battle of Panipat is fought by Marathas to defend the Mughal throne.
7. EIC wins India not from Mughals but from Marathas when they win Delhi in 1804 and depose the Peshwa in 1818.

This was a beautiful podcast. I, as an Indian from an era of better liberal politics, have been introduced to Mughal history which the current Hindutva regime is trying to blackout. Hence I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Fouzia's insights into the Mughal Empire which, for me, presents a new perspective on the characters of that era.
In 8th century subcontinent, the concept of India as a national entity did not exist. Subcontinent consisted of several small kingdoms; mostly antagonistic towards each other. Every prince wanted to enlarge his kingdom and degrade the neighbouring prince.
Invasion of Mahmood of ghazni should be understood in this manner.

Morever the hated Jaziya which was imposed by Aurangzeb alienated the Rajputs completely which also contributed to the fall of Mughal Empire.

Somnath and Nalanda were not destroyed by Muslim. In fact Mahmud of Ghazni destroyed idols inside the temple, they were interested in jewelry, precious stones inside the idols. (Dr Romila Thapar).
